"An Arundel Tomb" by Philip Larkin (read by Tom O'Bedlam)
Philip Larkin was inspired by the tomb of the Arundel family in Chichester Cathedral, which is about 12 miles away from Arundel. He was one of many visitors over the centuries. He remarks on what was a mere whim of the sculptor, the clasped hands, has come to signify so much to so many people and their surviving emblem.

The details are in this article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_Arundel_Tomb
I am often reminded of Larkin when putting the children to bed, especially of his immortal line "They tuck you up, your Mum and Dad..."
Side by side, their faces blurred
The earl and countess lie in stone,
Their proper habits vaguely shown
As jointed armour, stiffened pleat,
And that faint hint of the absurd -
The little dogs under their feet.
Such plainness of the pre-baroque
Hardly involves the eye, until
It meets his left-hand gauntlet, still
Clasped empty in the other; and
One sees, with a sharp tender shock,
His hand withdrawn, holding her hand.
They would not think to lie so long.
Such faithfulness in effigy
Was just a detail friends would see:
A sculptor's sweet commissioned grace
Thrown off in helping to prolong
The Latin names around the base.
They would not guess how early in
Their supine stationary voyage
The air would change to soundless damage,
Turn the old tenantry away ;
How soon succeeding eyes begin
To look, not read. Rigidly they
Persisted, linked, through lengths and breadths
Of time. Snow fell, undated. Light
Each summer thronged the glass. A bright
Litter of birdcalls strewed the same
Bone-riddled ground. And up the paths
The endless altered people came,
Washing at their identity.
Now, helpless in the hollow of
An unarmorial age, a trough
Of smoke in slow suspended skeins
Above their scrap of history,
Only an attitude remains:
Time has transfigured them into
Untruth. The stone fidelity
They hardly meant has come to be
Their final blazon, and to prove
Our almost-instinct almost true:
What will survive of us is love

In 2002, after a life long struggle with her gender identity, Rikki Arundel decided to change her gender, a decision that brought her successful speaking career in financial services technology to an abrupt halt. Faced with considerable discrimination, she changed her field of expertise, completing a masters degree in Gender Research at Hull University and establishing herself as a diversity expert. She has spent the past decade delivering transgender awareness and other gender related training to mostly public sector organisations, and developing her website at www.gendernetwork.com.

Set high on a hill, dominating the skyline and overlooking the ancient town of Arundel, is the Cathedral Church of Our Lady and St. Philip Howard.
Lower down the hill is Arundel Castle, seat of the Dukes of Norfolk. The church, which was made a Cathedral as recently as 1965, was founded by Henry Fitzalan-Howard, 15th Duke of Norfolk, in 1868. Built in the French Gothic style that would have been popular between 1300 and 1400 it was completed in 1873 and opened to the public on July 1st of that year.
The Church was originally dedicated to Our Lady and St. Philip Neri. Following the canonisation of the martyr Philip Howard, 20th Earl of Arundel, by Pope Paul VI in 1970, as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales and the reburial of his relics in the Cathedral, the dedication was changed in 1971 to Our Lady and St. Philip Howard
A few days before the celebration of Corpus Christi (60 days after Easter) a carpet of flowers is laid down the Cathedral’s central aisle by Cathedral parishioners. Open for public viewing, usually the day before and on the day of the celebration, thousands come to visit the Cathedral and see the flowers. The flowers are trampled underfoot by worshipers at the 5.30pm Mass, which is followed by procession to the Castle for Benediction.

Breakfast is included as standard. Enjoy a continental style buffet, or choose from a wide range of hot breakfast options.
The Swan Hotel was never an ordinary alehouse. Kimpton’s Guide to Arundel of 1903 referred to The Swan as ‘Providing good accommodation for travellers and cyclists’. The guide also praised its ‘Wines and spirits of superior quality’ and its catering for ‘Beanfeasts and other parties’. Along with serving Fuller’s award-winning cask ales, these are traditions that The Swan Hotel is proud to continue to this day.

A brief history of the hotel…
For your amusement and appreciation, we have included a little about the history of the hotel and the beautiful, enchanting town of Arundel.
The Swan dates back to 1759, when it was built facing the bustling Arundel Town Quay. Originally there was a courtyard at the rear with stabling for horses and coaches, otherwise this fine Georgian building looks much the same as it did at the end of the 18th century. The old inn sign from that time is displayed in the hotel’s restaurant.
Before 1900 Arundel was a thriving seaport. It was originally registered as a port in 1071.By the mid-19th century the river Arun was linked by canals to London and Portsmouth.
Wharves along the Arun once bristled with the masts of ships and barges carrying coal, timber, chalk and salt. However, trade declined with the growth of Littlehampton harbour. Eventually, when a railway bridge was built across the river at Ford in 1938, tall ships could no longer reach the port.
Nevertheless, fresh local fish remains popular and is always to be found on the menu of The Swan Hotel. The Arun itself is famous for its mullet. Curiously, babies born in Arundel qualify to be called ‘Mullets’. The name is carried with pride – a register of ‘Mullets’ is kept in the town library.
At one time, to satisfy its thirsty seafarers, shipwrights and stevedores, the small town of Arundel boasted two breweries and no less than 30 public houses. In those days beer was safer to drink than the so-called drinking water. Rural Sussex did not receive piped water until the late 19th century, and some parts of Arundel not until the mid-20th century.
With grateful acknowledgements to Rupert Brooks and Arundel Museum.

Zimbabwe is a country in Southern Africa. It is landlocked and is surrounded by South Africa to the south, Botswana to the Southwest, Zambia to the Northwest, and Mozambique to the east and north.
The Zambezi river forms the natural boundary with Zambia and when in full flood (February-April) the massive Victoria Falls on the river forms the world's largest curtain of falling water. The Victoria Falls are a major tourist attraction.
Once known as the Breadbasket of Africa, since 2000, Zimbabwe has undergone an economic collapse and the rule of law has gradually but largely broken down, although there have been a few signs of improvement since the theoretical formation of a unity Government in 2009 and the Zimbabwean economy has been on the rebound. GDP grew by more than 5% in the year 2010 and 2011, from a very low base. Growth is forecast to increase, buoyed by high mineral prices and the improving agriculture sector.

Matobo Hills National Park. Also known as Matopos, this small park close to Bulawayo was awarded a UNESCO world heritage status in 2003 for its fascinating natural features and wildlife.
Mana Pools National Park. Mana Pools National Park, South of the Zambezi river in the North of Zimbabwe, is a UNESCO world heritage site. A remote location, it welcomes happy few safari lovers with an abundance of elephants, hippos, lions, antelopes and other animals, and over 350 bird species, in stunning landscapes.
Great Zimbabwe Ruins. Located in the vicinity of Masvingo, the 3rd Zimbabwean city, Great Zimbabwe ruins are the remains of one of greatest African civilizations after the Pharaohs: the Kingdom of Great Zimbabwe dominated the area from present Zimbabwe, East of Botswana and South East of Mozambique in the late Iron Age (1100-1450 AD). From the impressive granite stone complex that was once built, the ruins span 1,800 ac (700 ha) and cover a radius of 100-200 mi (160-320 km).

Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe trip - Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority

Hwange National Park (formerly Wankie Game Reserve) is the largest game reserve in Zimbabwe. The park lies in the west, on the main road between Bulawayo and the widely noted Victoria Falls and near to Dete.
Flora
=======
The park is close to the edge of the Kalahari desert, a region with little water and very sparse, xerophile vegetation. The Kalahari woodland is dominated by Zambezi Teak, Sand Camwood (Baphia) and Kalahari bauhinia.[9] Seasonal wetlands form grasslands in this area.
The north and north-west of the park are dominated by mopane woodland.
Although it has been argued that elephant populations cause change in vegetation structure, some recent studies suggest that this is not the case, even with the large increases in elephant population recorded in the late 1980s.
Fauna
========
The Park hosts over 100 mammal and 400 bird species, including 19 large herbivores and eight large carnivores. All Zimbabwe's specially protected animals are to be found in Hwange and it is the only protected area where gemsbok and brown hyena occur in reasonable numbers.
Grazing herbivores are more common in the Main Camp Wild Area and Linkwasha Concession Area, with mixed feeders more common in the Robins and Sinamatella Wild Areas, which are more heavily wooded. Distribution fluctuates seasonally, with large herbivores concentrating in areas where intensive water pumping is maintained during the dry season.
The population of African wild dogs to be found in Hwange is thought to be of one of the larger surviving groups in Africa today, along with that of Kruger National Park and Selous Game Reserve. Other major predators include the lion, whose distribution and hunting in Hwange is strongly related to the pans and waterholes, leopard, spotted hyena and cheetah.
Elephants have been enormously successful in Hwange and the population has increased to far above that naturally supported by such an area.[19] This population of elephants has put a lot of strain on the resources of the park. There has been a lot of debate on how to deal with this, with parks authorities implementing culling to reduce populations,[20] especially during 1967 to 1986. The elephant population doubled in the five years following the end of culling in 1986.
National Parks Scientific Services co-ordinates two major conservation and research projects in the park:
National Leopard Project, which is surveying numbers of leopard to obtain base-line data for later comparative analysis with status of leopard in consumptive (hunting) areas and Communal Land bordering the National Park. This is carried out at Hwange in conjunction with the Wildlife Conservation and Research Unit of Oxford University and the Dete Animal Rescue Trust, a registered wildlife conservation Trust
Painted Dog Project: The project aims to protect and increase the range and numbers of African wild dog both in Zimbabwe and elsewhere in Africa, and operates through the Painted Dog Conservation organisation in Dete.
Geography and geology
======================
Most of the park is underlain by Kalahari Sands. In the north-west there are basalt lava flows of the Batoka Formation, stretching from south of Bumbusi to the Botswana border. In the north-central area, from Sinamatella going eastwards, there are granites and gneisses of the Kamativi-Dete Inlier and smaller inliers of these rocks are found within the basalts in the north-west.
The north and north-west of the park are drained by the Deka and Lukosi rivers and their tributaries, and the far south of the park is drained by the Gwabadzabuya River, a tributary of the Nata River. There are no rivers in the rest of the park, although there are fossil drainage channels in the main camp and Linkwasha areas, which form seasonal wetlands. In these areas without rivers, grassy pan depressions and pans have formed. Some of these pans, such as many of the pans in the Shumba area, fill with rainwater, while others, such as Ngweshla, Shakwanki and Nehimba, are fed by natural groundwater seeps. Many of the pans are additionally supplied by water pumped from underground by park authorities.

Tim Kent, professional musician living in Sussex, performs two traditional folk songs at The Willows Folk Club, Arundel, West Sussex on Wednesday 30th June 2010. Both these songs are played on a low-octave Leyanda guitar which Tim has cherished since '84. The Bedlam Boys has for many years been among Tim's most requested and this video is "the full pour" for "haileymon". Many different words abound but here are Tim's.
V1.For to see mad Tom of Bedlam ten thousand miles I'd travel / mad Maudlin goes on dirty toes just to save her shoes from gravel. CHORUS: Still I sing bonnie boys bonnie mad boys Bedlem boys are bonnie, and they all go bare and they live by the air and they want no drink nor money. V2. I went down to Satan's kitchen for to get me food one morning / and there I saw souls piping hot all on the spit a'turning. V3. My staff has murdered giants and my bag a long knife carries / for to cut mince pies from children's thighs with which to feed the fairies. V4. The spirit's white as lightening would on my travels guide me / the earth would shake and the stars would quake whenever they espied me. V5.No gypsy slot or dopsie can win this mad top from me / I'll weep all night and with stars fight and the fray will well become me. V6. And when that I have murdered the Man in the Moon to a powder / his bones I'll shake and his staff I'll quake and there will howl no demon louder. Hope you like it!
The second traditional ballad "The banks of the Bann" is Irish and is included here as a complete contrast to the first song. Tim is still available for folk club bookings and can be contacted through his website www.hatmusic.co.uk

This is a complete (almost) strip down and service guide for the current (2014-2015) Bachmann 00 gauge class 47.
When this loco arrived as part of Bachmann’s 25 Years special pack it made a horrible grinding noise in one direction that running in just was not going to fix.
Initially removal of the body was a disaster due to the Perspex clips and over use of black gunk used to secure the wires in the chassis.
This guide takes you through the steps to get the body off and points out the hazards along the way.
I do not claim to be an expert at all! What I will show you comes from experience (sometimes bitter) and with the kind advice from my friends on RMweb.co.uk and direct to my YouTube videos.
However, if you follow the steps you may also be successful in curing the noise issue I had.
Once the body is off, I will guide you in bogie removal, wiring issues and finally lubrication of the all-important motor bearings.
Finally after testing a reassembly guide follows showing things to be considered along the way.
I hope that my mistakes will help others.
While I am disappointed in Bachmann for a number of recent issues, it has to be said that this is a fine locomotive and I am very glad they produced it. Mike June 2015
