Originally published on Jan. 10, 2013 (revised Oct. 2013)
Over the past decade, the Saint Louis Zoo has become a leader for its captive work with mountain vipers. With a vested history in this snake complex, the Zoo found value in focusing its conservation efforts on a group largely ignored by other zoological institutions. The Zoo's studies of captive vipers have already provided useful information on reproduction and behavior.
This Zoo's Wild Care Institute Center for Conservation in Western Asia will continue to combine ecological field studies and taxonomic investigations to provide the fundamental data necessary for development of conservation management guidelines.
The Center is building on the successful program that has been established for the Armenian viper by expanding to include other mountain vipers, reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals that call Armenia home and on wildlife in surrounding countries of Western Asia. The Center, like all of the other Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Institute Centers, takes a holistic approach to troubled ecosystems by addressing three key ingredients in conservation success: wildlife management and recovery, conservation science, and support of the human populations that coexist with wildlife.

A timelapse, satellite flyover of the seasons changing in the Himalayas and Western Asia.
Using data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA's Terra satellite, scientists and data visualizers stitched together a full year's worth of monthly observations of the land surface, coastal oceans, sea ice, and clouds into a seamless, photo-like mosaic of every square kilometer (.386 square mile) of our planet.
These monthly images reveal seasonal changes to the land surface: the green-up and dying-back of vegetation in temperate regions; and advancing and retreating snow cover. The Blue Marble - Next Generation - offers a year's worth of monthly composites in remarkable detail.

Palestine vs Israel Conflict - Conflict In The West Bank
The West Bank is a landlocked territory near the Mediterranean shore of Western Asia, forming the mass of the Palestinian territories. The West Bank shares boundaries (marked off by the Jordanian-Israeli armistice of 1949) to the west, north, and southern with the state of Israel, and to the eastern, throughout the Jordan River, with Jordan. The West Bank also contains a significant shoreline along the western bank of the Dead Sea.
The international community considers Israeli negotiations in the West Bank, consisting of East Jerusalem, prohibited under worldwide legislation, though Israel disputes this. The International Court of Justice advising ruling (2004) concluded that occasions that came after the 1967 occupation of the West Bank by Israel, consisting of the Jerusalem Law, Israel's peace treaty with Jordan and the Oslo Accords, did not change the status of the West Bank (consisting of East Jerusalem) as occupied territory with Israel as the inhabiting power.
The resolution marked the territory explained as "the hill country of Samaria and Judea" (including exactly what is now known as the "West Bank") as component of the suggested Arab state, yet following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War this area was captured by Transjordan (relabelled Jordan 2 years after independence in 1946).

In which John Green teaches you about Imperialism, but not from the perspective of the colonizers. This week John looks at some Asian perspectives on Imperialism, specifically writers from countries that were colonized by European powers. We'll look at the writings of Sayyid Jamal ad-Din al-Afghani from the Middle East, Liang Qichao from China, and Rabindranath Tagore from India. these voices from the countries that were colonized give us a sense of how conquered people saw their conquerors, and gives an insight into what these nations learned from being dominated by Europe. It's pretty interesting, OK? A lot of this episode is drawn from a fascinating book by Pankaj Mishra called The Ruins of Empire: The Revolt Against the West and the Remaking of Asia. You should read it.

Iran:
Iran officially the Islamic Republic of Iran, is a country in Western Asia. It is bordered to the northwest by Armenia, the de facto independent Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and Azerbaijan; with Kazakhstan and Russia across the Caspian Sea; to the northeast by Turkmenistan; to the east by Afghanistan and Pakistan; to the south by the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman; and to the west by Turkey and Iraq. Comprising a land area of 1,648,195 km2 (636,372 sq mi), it is the second-largest nation in the Middle East and the 18th-largest in the world. With 78.4 million inhabitants, Iran is the world's 17th most populous nation. It is the only country that has both a Caspian Sea and an Indian Ocean coastline. Iran has long been of geostrategic importance because of its central location in Eurasia and Western Asia, and its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz.
Geography:
Iran is the 18th largest country in the world, with an area of 1,648,195 km2 (636,372 sq mi). Its area roughly equals that of the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and Germany combined, or somewhat more than the US state of Alaska. Iran lies between latitudes 24° and 40° N, and longitudes 44° and 64° E. Its borders are with Azerbaijan (611 km (380 mi)) (with Azerbaijan-Naxcivan exclave (179 km (111 mi) )) and Armenia (35 km (22 mi)) to the north-west; the Caspian Sea to the north; Turkmenistan (992 km (616 mi)) to the north-east; Pakistan (909 km (565 mi)) and Afghanistan (936 km (582 mi)) to the east; Turkey (499 km (310 mi)) and Iraq (1,458 km (906 mi)) to the west; and finally the waters of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman to the south.
Mount Damavand, Iran's highest point, is located in Amol County, Mazanderan.
Iran consists of the Iranian Plateau with the exception of the coasts of the Caspian Sea and Khuzestan Province. It is one of the world's most mountainous countries, its landscape dominated by rugged mountain ranges that separate various basins or plateaux from one another. The populous western part is the most mountainous, with ranges such as the Caucasus, Zagros and Alborz Mountains; the last contains Iran's highest point, Mount Damavand at 5,610 m (18,406 ft), which is also the highest mountain on the Eurasian landmass west of the Hindu Kush.
The northern part of Iran is covered by dense rain forests called Shomal or the Jungles of Iran. The eastern part consists mostly of desert basins such as the Dasht-e Kavir, Iran's largest desert, in the north-central portion of the country, and the Dasht-e Lut, in the east, as well as some salt lakes. This is because the mountain ranges are too high for rain clouds to reach these regions.
The only large plains are found along the coast of the Caspian Sea and at the northern end of the Persian Gulf, where Iran borders the mouth of the Arvand river. Smaller, discontinuous plains are found along the remaining coast of the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman.
Iran's climate ranges from arid or semiarid, to subtropical along the Caspian coast and the northern forests. On the northern edge of the country (the Caspian coastal plain) temperatures rarely fall below freezing and the area remains humid for the rest of the year. Summer temperatures rarely exceed 29 °C (84.2 °F).Annual precipitation is 680 mm (26.8 in) in the eastern part of the plain and more than 1,700 mm (66.9 in) in the western part. United Nations Resident Coordinator for Iran Gary Lewis has said that "Water scarcity poses the most severe human security challenge in Iran today"
To the west, settlements in the Zagros basin experience lower temperatures, severe winters with below zero average daily temperatures and heavy snowfall. The eastern and central basins are arid, with less than 200 mm (7.9 in) of rain, and have occasional deserts. Average summer temperatures exceed 38 °C (100.4 °F). The coastal plains of the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman in southern Iran have mild winters, and very humid and hot summers. The annual precipitation ranges from 135 to 355 mm (5.3 to 14.0 in).

Famous Mummies From China Were White. (Visit: http://www.uctv.tv/) Conversations with History host Harry Kreisler welcome Professor Kishore Mahbubani for a discussion of his new book, The Great Convergence. Professor Mahbubani analyzes the global forces propelling global society and economy toward one world. He also discusses the failure to develop a structure for global governance. In dissecting this contradiction he explains how existing global institutions provide an inadequate response for the global transformation that is occurring. Geopolitics and the lingering dominance of the victors of World War II are seen as primary obstacles to implementing a new global governance structure that realizes global democracy, recognizes power imbalances, and implements a global rule of law. Series: "Conversations with History" [4/2013] [Public Affairs] [Show ID: 24969]

If you have watched many of my videos you already know I have salt in my veins and sand between my toes. I am always searching for that one particular beach where I could really chill out. Who doesn’t like a nice pleasant view and cool sea breezes right?
Well the truth is dozens of beaches line the Gulf of Thailand, which is where most of Thailand's coastline exists. Whatever your tastes whether parties and entertainment, luxury hotels and spa services or seclusion and privacy, a beach that meets your needs is on the Gulf of Thailand.
The beaches of Cha-am and Hua Hin are popular with throngs of weekending Thais escaping from the capital. They are fast becoming crammed with condos, high-rise hotels and bars, not to mention a large population of foreign tourists and expats.
For me I prefer quieter beaches a little further south like the little resort communities of Pak Nam Pran and Sam Roi Yot, Also worth checking out is Prachuap Khiri Khan, which has a lovely bay in front and flanked by an appealing beach and also worth noting is laid-back, lightly developed Ban Krud and Bang Saphan.
Even further down we have the beaches around Chumphon which include Hat Thung Wua Laen and Hat Sai Ri.
The Gulf coast has a slightly different climate from the Andaman coast and much of the rest of Thailand. So are there places that aren’t too over developed that are conducive for a RIPper to live a great retirement lifestyle? Well I am out to see what a few of these beaches have to offer. So come along with me and let’s check them out and see.
Please become a friend or subscribe to this channel and you if can, link back to my website I’d appreciate it. For more videos, books on retiring abroad and a Retirement Budget Calculator go check out http://retirecheap.asia

Famous Mummies From China Were White. After years of controversy and political intrigue, archaeologists using genetic testing have proven that Caucasians roamed China's Tarim Basin 1,000 years before East Asian people arrived. Asian Caucasoids, tall people with red or blond hair and light eyes, had long been the subject of ancient Asian legend. Then, in the early 20th century, archeologists digging in the Tarim Basin in western China, unearthed mummies resembling these legendary "gods".
The research, which the Chinese government has appeared to have delayed making public out of concerns of fueling Uighur Muslim separatism in its western-most Xinjiang region, is based on a cache of ancient dried-out corpses that have been found around the Tarim Basin in recent decades.
It is unfortunate that the issue has been so politicized because it has created a lot of difficulties, It would be better for everyone to approach this from a purely scientific and historical perspective.
The discoveries in the 1980s of the undisturbed 4,000-year-old "Beauty of Loulan" and the younger 3,000-year-old body of the "Charchan Man" are legendary in world archaeological circles for the fine state of their preservation and for the wealth of knowledge they bring to modern research. In historic and scientific circles the discoveries along the ancient Silk Road were on a par with finding the Egyptian mummies.
But China's concern over its rule in restive Xinjiang has widely been perceived as impeding faster research into them and greater publicity of the findings. Tarim Basin mummies, have not only given scientists a look into their physical biologies, but their clothes, tools and burial rituals.
Mair, who played a pivotal role in bringing the discoveries to Western scholars in the 1990s, has worked tirelessly to get Chinese approval to take samples out of China for definitive genetic testing. One expedition in recent years succeeded in collecting 52 samples with the aide of Chinese researchers, but later Mair's hosts had a change of heart and only let five of them out of the country. "I spent six months in Sweden last year doing nothing but genetic research," Mair said from his home in the United States where he teaches at the University of Pennsylvania. "My research has shown that in the second millennium BC, the oldest mummies, like the Loulan Beauty, were the earliest settlers in the Tarim Basin.
"From the evidence available, we have found that during the first 1,000 years after the Loulan Beauty, the only settlers in the Tarim Basin were Caucasoid." East Asian peoples only began showing up in the eastern portions of the Tarim Basin about 3,000 years ago, Mair said, while the Uighur peoples arrived after the collapse of the Orkon Uighur Kingdom, largely based in modern day Mongolia, around the year 842.
"Modern DNA and ancient DNA show that Uighurs, Kazaks, Krygyzs, the peoples of Central Asia are all mixed Caucasian and East Asian. The modern and ancient DNA tell the same story," he said.
China has only allowed the genetic studies in the last few years, with a 2004 study carried out by Jilin University also finding that the mummies' DNA had Europoid genes, further proving that the earliest settlers of Western China were not East Asians.
In the preface to the 2002 book, "Ancient Corpses of Xinjiang," written by Chinese archeologist Wang Huabing, the Chinese historian and Sanskrit specialist Ji Xianlin soundly denounced the use of the mummies by Uighur separatists as proof that Xinjiang should not belong to China.
"What has stirred up the most excitement in academic circles, both in the East and the West, is the fact that the ancient corpses of 'white (Caucasoid/Europid) people' have been excavated," Jin wrote. "However, within China a small group of ethnic separatists have taken advantage of this opportunity to stir up trouble and are acting like buffoons, (styling) themselves the descendants of these ancient 'white people' with the aim of dividing the motherland." Further on, in an apparent swipe at the government's lack of eagerness to acknowledge the science and publicize it to the world, Ji wrote that "a scientist may not distort facts for political reasons, religious reasons, or any other reason".
Meanwhile, Yingpan Man, a nearly perfectly preserved 2,000-year-old Caucasoid mummy, was only this month allowed to leave China for the first time, and is being displayed at the Tokyo Edo Museum. Yingpan Man not only had a gold foil death mask -- a Greek tradition -- covering his blonde bearded face, but also wore elaborate golden embroidered red and maroon garments with seemingly Western European designs. His nearly 2.00 meter (six-foot, six-inch) long body is the tallest of all the mummies found so far and the clothes and artifacts discovered in the surrounding tombs suggest the highest level of Caucasoid civilization in the ancient Tarim Basin region.

The recent China-Russia gas deal unlocks new gas supplies and could bring down gas prices across Asia.
The massive $400-billion gas deal between the two countries, which was reached last month, can have positive implications for the energy market.
According to the deal, gas will be transported from Russia to China via a new pipeline linking Siberian gas fields from 2018, building up gradually to 38 billion cubic meters a year.
Meanwhile, US lawmakers have expressed concerns over the multibillion-dollar gas deal, urging Washington to take action over the case.

Colin Renfrew speaks on the Unsolved Mysteries of the Silk Road at the Silk Road Symposium held at the Penn Museum held in March 2011.
The extent of contact between east (China) and west (Europe and Western Asia) in the prehistoric period has been much debated but remains little understood. In 1921 John Gunnar Anderson's excavations at Yangshao in Henan province led him to interpret the painted neolithic pottery found there as derived from that of neolithic Greece, a suggestion discounted by most subsequent scholars. Yet the genetics of the millet found in the neolithic of China and of eastern Europe leads archaeobotanists today to suggest a single source. The origins of copper and bronze metallurgy are likewise debated, and the mechanisms of transmission from the west of the horse-drawn chariots seen in burials of the late Shang dynasty are still open to question. Xinjiang province, with its remarkable preservation and its many insights from the second and first millennia BC offers tantalising clues, not least the Tarim "mummies" with their wonderfully preserved clothing and their western appearance. The presence there in the eighth century AD of the Tocharian language, the easternmost in the Indo-European language family, has led to intriguing speculations. These will be critically addressed. It will be argued that we are the dawn of a new era in the archaeology of prehistoric Eurasia, with the Silk Road offering challenges to many long-held ideas.
Colin Renfrew is the former Disney professor of Archaeology and Director of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK. He is now Senior Fellow of the McDonald Institute.

They occupied large parts of Europe and Western Asia, developed sophisticated tools, mastered fire and engaged in the hunting of large mammals, but what do we know about the development and ultimate fate of our closest evolutionary relative?

Iran, officially the Islamic Republic of Iran, is a country in Western Asia. The name "Iran", which in Persian means "Land of the Aryans", has been in native use since the Sassanian era, in antiquity. It came into use internationally in 1935, before which the country was known to the Western world as Persia (pron.: /ˈpɜrʒə/ or /ˈpɜrʃə/). Both "Persia" and "Iran" are used interchangeably in cultural contexts; however, "Iran" is the name used officially in political contexts.[14]
The 18th-largest country in the world in terms of area at 1,648,195 km2 (636,372 sq mi), Iran has a population of around 75 million.[10][15] It is a country of particular geopolitical significance owing to its location in three spheres of Asia. Iran is bordered on the north by Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. As Iran is a littoral state of the Caspian Sea, which is an inland sea, Kazakhstan and Russia are also Iran's direct neighbors to the north. Iran is bordered on the east by Afghanistan and Pakistan, on the south by the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, on the west by Iraq and on the northwest by Turkey. Tehran is the capital, the country's most populous city and the political, cultural, commercial and industrial center of the nation. Iran is a regional power,[16][17] and holds an important position in international energy security and world economy as a result of its large reserves of petroleum and natural gas. Iran has the second largest proven natural gas reserves in the world and the fourth largest proven petroleum reserves.[18]
Iran is home to one of the world's oldest civilizations.[19] The first dynasty in Iran formed during the Elamite kingdom in 2800 BC. The Iranian Medes unified Iran into an empire in 625 BC.[2] They were succeeded by the Iranian Achaemenid Empire, the Hellenic Seleucid Empire and two subsequent Iranian empires, the Parthians and the Sassanids, before the Muslim conquest in 651 AD. Iranian post-Islamic dynasties and empires expanded the Persian language and culture throughout the Iranian plateau. Early Iranian dynasties which re-asserted Iranian independence included the Tahirids, Saffarids, Samanids and Buyids.
The blossoming of Persian literature, philosophy, medicine, astronomy, mathematics and art became major elements of Islamic civilization. Iranian identity continued despite foreign rule in the ensuing centuries[20] and Persian culture was adopted also by the Ghaznavid,[21] Seljuk,[22][23] Ilkhanid[24] and Timurid[25] rulers. The emergence in 1501 of the Safavid dynasty,[3] which promoted Twelver Shia Islam[26] as the official religion of their empire, marked one of the most important turning points in Iranian and Muslim history.[27] The Persian Constitutional Revolution established the nation's first parliament in 1906, within a constitutional monarchy. Following a coup d'état instigated by the UK and US in 1953, Iran gradually became a more autocratic country. Growing dissent with foreign influence culminated during the Iranian Revolution which led to establishment of an Islamic republic on 1 April 1979.[15][28]
Iran is a founding member of the UN, NAM, OIC and OPEC. The political system of Iran, based on the 1979 constitution, comprises several intricately connected governing bodies. The highest state authority is the Supreme Leader. Shia Islam is the official religion and Persian is the official language.[29]

Two families at the end of their wick send their disobedient children to South Africa to stay with a lesbian couple, the du Toit de Vos family. 17-year-old British Asian Hamzah Wali is caught between two worlds. His traditional Pakistani family expect him to pray, attend mosque and read the Koran. But Hamzah wants to smoke, drink and date girls.
Charlie Denny's parents spent thousands of pounds on her education, but she still flunked out of private school. Her father has multiple sclerosis, but Charlie is too busy getting drunk and no-one talks about it.
Gay mum Anna-Marie is a barrister and her partner Suzanne is an artist. They fought the laws against gay couples adopting children - and won. So taking on two rebellious British teenagers is going to be an interesting challenge for them.
Hamzah isn't best pleased to find two women telling him what to do. He refuses to participate in family meals, school work and helping around the farm. When Anna-Marie asks him to help plant a tree Hamzah walks off the job and sparks fly.
Can a week with the gay mums make Hamzah pull his finger out and get Charlie to open up to her true feelings?

The Middle East is a region that roughly encompasses Western Asia. The term is considered to be Eurocentric and used as a synonym for Near East, in opposition to Far East. The corresponding adjective is Middle-Eastern and the derived noun is Middle-Easterner. The largest ethnic group in the middle east are Arabs, with Turks, Turkomans, Persians, Kurds, Azeris, Copts, Jews, Maronites, Assyro-Chaldeans, Circassians, Armenians, Druze and numerous other ethnic groups forming other significant populations.
The history of the Middle East dates back to ancient times, and throughout its history, the Middle East has been a major center of world affairs. When discussing ancient history, however, the term Near East is more commonly used. The Middle East is also the historical origin of major religions such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam as well as the less common Baha'i faith, Mandaeism, Druze faith and others. The Middle East generally has an arid and hot climate, with several major rivers providing for irrigation to support agriculture in limited areas, especially in Mesopotamia and the rest of the Fertile Crescent. Many countries located around the Persian Gulf have large quantities of crude oil, which has resulted in much wealth particularly for nations in the Arabian peninsula. In modern times the Middle East remains a strategically, economically, politically, culturally and religiously sensitive region.

The United States has six major non-NATO allies in the Greater Middle East region. These allies are Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Afghanistan, Israel, Kuwait, and Morocco. Israel and Egypt are leading recipients of foreign aid, receiving $2.775 billion[19] and 1.75 billion[20] in 2010.
United States has invested several hundred billion dollars in destruction of Iraq's infrastructure and military in 2003 invasion of Iraq.[21] Turkey is host to approximately 90 B61 nuclear bombs at Incirlik Air Base.[22] Other allies include Qatar, where 3,500 U.S. troops are based,[23] and Bahrain, where the Navy maintains NSA Bahrain, home of NAVCENT and the Fifth Fleet.
The U.S. has built a non-NATO alliance with Pakistan to assist with the War in Afghanistan, granting it the major non-NATO ally status and jointly combat terrorism in the subcontinent.
