In response to last year's Gaza conflict, the Israeli government announced the construction of further settlements in the West Bank — a move condemned by the international community for escalating tensions that were already highly fraught.
The expansion of the settlements has consumed privately owned Palestinian land, causing the destruction of Palestinian homes, produce, and livelihoods. Despite Israeli settlements taking up only one percent of land in the West Bank, they now exert control over 42 percent, with settlement boundaries often 10 times larger than the settlements themselves.
VICE News traveled to the West Bank to speak to displaced Palestinians and activists who are trying desperately to address the grievances that boiled over with such horrific consequences in 2014.

West Bank Story is a musical comedy about David, an Israeli soldier, and Fatima, a Palestinian fast food cashier - an unlikely couple who fall in love amidst the animosity of their families' dueling falafel stands in the West Bank.
Tensions mount when the Kosher King's new pastry machine juts onto Hummus Hut property. The Palestinians ruin the machine and the Israelis respond by building a wall between the two eating establishments.
The couple professes their love for each other, triggering a chain of events that destroys both restaurants and forces all to find common ground in an effort to rebuild, planting a seed of hope.
******************************
Why did you make the film?
I wanted to accomplish three things with the movie:
1. I wanted to make a film that would get attention and also make people laugh.
2. I wanted to make a movie that was pro-peace and offered a message of hope.
3. I wanted to address the situation in an even-handed and balanced way so that Jewish and Arab audiences would feel fairly represented enough to let their guard down and laugh WITH the characters from the "other side". I thought, if we can make a movie that Israelis will watch and like the Arab characters and that Arabs will watch and like the Israeli characters then that will be something valuable.
What problems did you encounter in making the film?
Many people said you can't make a film that's a comedy about a tragedy like the Middle East conflict. They said that no one wants to see that and you will end up offending every Jew and Arab in America. I was also advised against making a short movie that takes place in another country because it would be too expensive. They insisted I would never be able to pull it off and it would look student and cheap.
1. At first, I heeded their advice and I shelved the project for 5 months. It wasn't until I started working with my co-writer, Kim Ray, that we returned to the project with a new perspective. We decided that it was necessary to simplify the situation in order to make it comedic. We wanted to show that both sides were more alike than they care to admit so we brainstormed a list of things that Arabs and Israelis have in common. When we came up with food and the premise of competing falafel stands, the script began to come to life.
2. A major challenge was balance in portraying both sides evenly. Our fear was that we might offend one side and then turn them off to the story. Therefore, we made sure that for every joke against one side we had one for the other. Likewise, for every endearing or heartfelt moment for the Palestinians we had to have one for the Israelis. Balance was crucial to staying credible. This balance carried over into every aspect of the film. The costumes had to be equally funny on both sides as did their restaurants and the personalities of the characters. I think we did a pretty good job of keeping it balanced.
What do you want the viewer to take away from the film?
I sometimes get remarks about the film being too simplistic and that it does not accurately show the suffering of any one side. I agree, it IS simplistic because it has to be in order to be a comedy. This film is not meant to be a learning tool for the situation in the Middle East. It is not an historical explanation, or a political solution on screen. It is a movie about HOPE and PEACE and that is it. It is meant to counteract the multitudes of negative documentaries and news reports that, while very informative, usually seem to be skewed to one side and ALWAYS leave the viewer feeling like this conflict will go on forever. I truly believe that peace between Israelis and Arabs will be achieved and don't believe it is a hopeless endeavor. We wanted to make a film that would convey that feeling.
What has been the response from Jews and Arabs?
The response has been overwhelmingly positive from both sides. I have had requests for DVD's from professors from Qatar, libraries in Egypt, soldiers in Israel, Palestinian families in Gaza, Elementary school teachers in Haifa, Jewish and Arab film festivals all over the United States, and the list goes on. The film played at the Jerusalem Jewish Film Festival and the Tel Aviv University Student Film Festival in Israel. It also played at the Dubai International Film Festival to a very warm reception and was screened there more than any other film at the festival. It was one of the best screening experiences I have ever had.
What is your background? Are you from the Middle East?
I was born in the United States and am the son of an Israeli father and an American mother. I studied Islam, Judaism, and the History of the Middle East in college and have traveled the Middle East extensively having been to Israel (almost every year), Palestine, Jordan, Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, and Dubai. I currently have family that live throughout Israel.

I've read the chapter in her book on Israel, and let me tell you, there is a doozy in there. Let me just read. Israeli forces have fatally shot two Palestinians in the northern occupied West Bank. The victims were killed in Arqah village west of Jenin. Israeli media claim the Palestinians opened fire at army forces before being shot. They say the shooting happened during a patrol outside the settlement of Hinanit. Israeli troops have killed 177 Palestinians since the beginning of October when the new intifada was launched in the occupied territories. On Saturday, the outgoing UN human rights rapporteur in the Palestinian territories, Makarim Wibisono, slammed Israel for using excessive force against Palestinians. Wibisono said the upsurge in violence in the occupied territories is a grim reminder of the unsustainable human rights situation there.

The recent storm of violence in Jerusalem and the Israeli-occupied West Bank began on this road between the Jewish settlements of Itamar and Elon Moreh. On 1st October a settlers' car was fired on, killing a mother and father. Their four children were not hit.
Israel's defence minister Moshe Ya'alon pointed the finger at Palestinian self-rule: "We are currently in a period of eruption, that is either connected or not connected to the Temple Mount. Unfortunately, the issue here is the incitemen…

Despite widespread upheaval across the Arab world and the ongoing statehood bid to the UN by the Palestinian National Authority, little has changed for those living under occupation in the West Bank.
For Suad Amiry, a former member of the Palestine peace delegation, the lack of progress at the UN is frustrating. "Neither the Americans nor the Europeans have been fair in telling Israel enough. We find Obama telling us we are taking short cuts." Meanwhile, life in the West Bank is still precarious, with many living in fear of attacks from Israeli settlers. "They have always come at night, in darkness to attack us. We could not even sleep because of fear", says one woman. Zakaria Zubeidi, a former militant in the Palestinian al-Aqsa Brigades wants a single state, without occupation and with equal rights, but believes this will probably never happen. "The Israeli army has come with tanks and killed our people and in doing so have taken our faith and hope". For many Palestinians it's clear that the Arab Spring is still a long way from the West Bank.

Palestinian mourners in the occupied West Bank have laid to rest the body of a teenager who was fatally shot by Israeli forces on Wednesday.
The funeral for 16-year-old Omer Madi Jubarah took place in the city of al-Khalil, also known as Hebron. Israeli forces shot dead Jubarah during clashes at a refugee camp in the north of al-Khalil. His death brings to 174 the total number of Palestinians killed by Israeli soldiers since the beginning of October when tensions began to soar in the occupied territories. The wave of violence has also left 29 Israelis dead.

A Tour of the West Bank / Palestine visiting Bethlehem, Jericho and Jordan River with Abraham Tours.
Highlights
-Visit the city where Jesus was born, Bethlehem
-Explore historical ruins of the ancient city of Jericho
-Taste the brews at the world-famous Taybeh Brewery
-Tour the vibrant, modern, city of Ramallah
-Enjoy panoramic views across the hills of the Judean Desert, and the green hills further north
-Experience an authentic Arabic style lunch
This unique one day guided West Bank tour, leaves from Jerusalem every Saturday and will take you to four of the highlights of the West Bank: Bethlehem, Jericho, Taybeh, and Ramallah, for an unforgettable insight into the history and culture of this fascinating region. Visiting major historic and religious sites, as well as sites of natural beauty, and modern day culture, this is a varied and fascinating tour which you will not forget.
Leaving Jerusalem, the tour heads to Bethlehem where you will enjoy a guided tour of the major sites of the city where Jesus was born. You'll visit Church of Nativity, the Milk Grotto, the Old City with its colorful market, the Shepherd's Field, and walk alongside the separation barrier breaking the journey with a delicious Arab style lunch. After lunch, you'll visit Qasr-el-Yahud, the ancient baptism site of Jesus on the banks of the Jordan River, before continuing to the archaeological sight of the world's oldest city, Jericho. After leaving Jericho, you will have a great view of the Mount of Temptation as we head into the rolling hills of the West Bank and the village of Taybeh, famous for being home to the Taybeh Brewery. Back on the bus, the last stop, Ramallah, is just a short distance away. You'll tour this modern, vibrant, cultural capital of the West Bank, seeing Arafat's Tomb. If you want to continue to a nightlife tour of Ramallah, including dinner, nargila, a bar and a nightclub, you can do so at this point. Otherwise, you'll head back to Jerusalem with a day of memories that will not be soon forgotten.
Today we're going on a tour of West Bank or Palestine. We have a very diverse tour. We're going to be seeing historical attractions, political attractions and tourist attractions.
Our first stop today is Sheppard's Field and here in the background we have the Church of the Sheppard which is where the three sheppard's are supposed to have seen the start of David in the sky before Jesus was born.
Singing in the choir
Children cheering and laughing!
Now we're visiting a refugee camp. It looks more like a city because it's been around for more than 60 years.
Sizzling sound of frying oil.
I've had falafel many times but this is the first time I've seen it prepared.
Forget Starbucks, I'm going to Stars and Bucks.
So were are back at the Jordan River again. A few days ago we visited from the Jordanian side in Bethany beyond the Jordan. It's a bit surreal being back so soon.
Right now we're visiting Jericho and to the left is a new part of Jericho. The new city. And to my right is the world's oldest city.
We're visiting the first West Bank Palestinian brewery here.
Ah, that's good.
This is part of our Travel in Israel series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Israeli culture, Israeli arts, Israeli foods, Israeli cuisine, Jewish religion and Israeli people.

When you think of traveling to Israel visiting religious sites in Jerusalem or basing yourself in Tel Aviv may initially come to mind. However, when exploring Israel it is paramount to set aside enough time to get off the beaten path and explore more of the country. Fortunately, for us, we were able to make two separate trips to Israel experiencing as much food, culture, historical and modern attractions as we possibly could.
The following is a list of things to do in Israel with a focus on the top attractions in this travel guide:
1) Regardless of whether you can swim (or not swim) well you will most certainly float when visiting the Dead Sea. Covering yourself in gooey mud and joining others floating is one of the top attractions in Israel.
2) No trip to Israel would be complete without sampling the local cuisine and especially the street food. With this in mind we walked all the way from our hotel room in Tel Aviv to Jaffa - an ancient city renowned for its amazing hummus and other street food. Aside from just hummus we were able to try Shaksouka, cheese stuffed pastries, malabi and kanafeh.
3) Having the opportunity to take a tour of the West Bank (or Palestine) is an eye opening experience. Media coverage, from the perspective of the west, often depicts this area as being quite unruly and poor; however, a tour there really dispels a lot of myths. We had the opportunity to eat falafel, walking around the streets and get a real sense of what life is like in this region. Some highlights included visiting Sheppard's Field, the Jordan River and oldest city in the world - Jericho. To end our trip we drank beer at the West Bank Palestinian brewery.
4) Getting off the beaten track a little we visited Rosh Hanikra. Known as the window to the Mediterranean we were treated to breathtaking views and an amazing sunset.
5) Aside from just eating our way around Jaffa, we took the time to properly explore it on foot. One of the top highlights was visiting a traditional flea market,
6) Taking the cable car up to visit Masada was a welcome relief considering how hot it was on the day we visited. As we wandered about we visited an old water cistern and Byzantine church. From our vantage point we had amazingly unobstructed views of the Dead Sea.
7) Caesarea! The ruins of the ancient city once given from Agus Caesar to Harrod the Great was an experience we'll never forget. Walking around in the Hippodrome allowed me to visualize what the old chariot races must have been like.
8) One of my favorite meals in Israel was prepared by a Druze family. This amazing feast, in the form of a buffet, featured kebabs, olives, chicken and stuffed cabbage just to name a few.
9) Wondering wear to rest your sleepy head while traveling in Israel? Look no further than the Fauzi Azar Inn in Nazareth. This converted Arab Mansion offers a charming stay. Best of all is that free cake and coffee is available throughout the day and the buffet breakfast is amazing.
10) One of the more frontier attractions was visiting Golan Heights and the Sea of Galilee. We toured around the Banias Reserve and Mount Bental.
11) Considering how tasty the food is in Israel it would be a shame to leave without knowing how to recreate these delectable delights back home in your own kitchen. Fortunately, for us, we were able to take a cooking class at Dan Gourmet in Tel Aviv. We learned how to make Lahmacun and charred eggplant amongst other dishes.
12) Have you ever wondered how olive oil is made? Visiting an olive press answered our all of our questions and made us appreciate the craft of making this high quality cooking oil. For the best vantage point of Nazareth we headed to Mount Precipice for panoramic 360 degree views. Finally, we visited Haifa to check out the famous Bahá'í gardens.

Travel video about destination Egypt.
Egypt is a land of monumental temples, gigantic pyramids, the River Nile and the mysterious Sphinx: 5000 years of history.Founded by Alexander The Great in 332 B.C., the city of Alexandria is located in the Nile Delta and it was here that Caesar and Mark Anthony fell under Cleopatra’s spell. Cairo is Africa’s largest city and the heart of the Arab world, extreme poverty living next to opulent wealth, and modern, Western boutiques next to ancient souks. The Cairo Museum is home to the most extensive collection of Egyptian antiquities, including the golden mask and tomb of Tutankamun. Towering above almost any other human achievement are the impressive three pyramids of Gisa. The Cheops Pyramid, the world’s largest single construction, took four hundred thousand workers twenty years to build. It weighs as much as all the cathedrals in Europe put together and spans an area of 53,000 square metres - the height of a fifty storey skyscraper. In the middle of today’s modern city of Luxor, known as the ‘Capital City Of The Pharaohs’, the Luxor Temple stretches along the eastern banks of the Nile and, not far away, the temple complex of Karnak and the Amun Temple. 67 kilometres from Luxor, on the western bank of the Nile, lies the Temple Of Dendera, the most important place of worship for the love goddess, HATHOR, whose heavenly appearance was portrayed by the body of a cow. At Aswan, the landscape of the Nile is enchanting, but it is the stone temples of Abu Simbel that take one back to ancient Egypt, land of the Pharaohs, and archaeological paradise.

50 Things to do in London Travel Guide | Top Attractions London City Guide Transcript:
So Hello from London! Time for a new destination. This is a city that I haven't visited in almost 4 years and it is actually Sam's very first time here. So we're both very excited to be in London. And we're going to be making a little video guide. Actually a really big video guide because we plan on showing you 50 different things to do around London. So let's get started.
Our first stop was Trafalgar Square. This square leads to a lot of central attractions, so it's a nice place to people watch, get your bearings, and plan out where you want to go in the city.
The London Eye is a giant Ferris wheel on the South Bank of the Thames. It offers a bird's eye view of the city - just make sure you don't go on a foggy day.
Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence for Britain's sovereigns since 1837. The State Rooms at Buckingham Palace are open to visitors every year, however, that's something that you need to plan months in advance.
The Palace of Westminster, also known as the Houses of Parliament, is the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The Palace along with Big Ben are two of the top London attractions that dot the city-scape.
The Tower of London sits on the north bank of the River Thames. Though this castle served many purposes, it's mainly remembered for its use as a prison in the 16th and 17th centuries.
And that's a wrap for London! Like with any mega city, it's impossible to cover all the sights and attractions you can enjoy here, but hopefully this video will give you an idea of what London has to offer. As always, if you have any other suggestions of things to do in London that you'd like to share with other travellers, feel free to include those in the comments below.
This is part of our Travel in England series. We're making a series of videos showcasing English culture, English arts, English foods, English religion, English cuisine and English people.

Budapest Travel Guide - Budapest is the capital city of Hungary. With a unique, youthful atmosphere, world-class classical music scene as well as a pulsating nightlife increasingly appreciated among European youth, and last but not least, an exceptional offer of natural thermal baths, Budapest is one of Europe's most delightful and enjoyable cities. Due to the exceedingly scenic setting, and its architecture it is nicknamed "Paris of the East". The local pronunciation can be approximated by "boo-dah-pesht".
In 1987 Budapest was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List for the cultural and architectural significance of the Banks of the Danube, the Buda Castle Quarter and Andrássy Avenue.
Travellers are quickly recognising the appeal of Budapest, with tourism accounting for approximately 2.7 million visitors per year. Consisting of two cities with different flavours, Buda on the west bank of the Danube River and Pest on the east bank, Budapest offers travellers a unique atmosphere influenced by Viennese and Parisian architecture. Hungarians are proud of what their beautiful capital has to offer and its contributions to European culture, especially in the field of music, and sciences. They also take some pride in their language which is unrelated to languages of the Indo-European family such as English, French or Russian. While Finnish is a distant relative to Hungarian, these two branches of the Uralic family are estimated to have diverged a few thousands years ago, and no communication between speakers of them is possible.

For a relaxing city break, Brisbane is the perfect place to visit. Start your trip with a trip to the top of the clock tower for city views to get your bearings.
South Bank Parklands is a great place to take the family, start with the wheel of Brisbane for great views of the river, take the kids to the playground and then go for a dip at the manmade beach.
Art lovers should head to the Gallery of Modern Art and the Queensland Art Gallery located not far from South Bank.
Visit the highest peak in Brisbane for stunning views of the city at Mt Coot-tha and take a stroll along the walking trails. If you don't fancy walking to the top, browse the botanic gardens and parklands at the base.

Kuala Lumpur (called simply KL by locals) is the federal capital and the largest city in Malaysia.
Literally meaning "muddy river confluence" in Malay, Kuala Lumpur has grown from a small sleepy Chinese tin-mining village to a bustling metropolis of around 6.5 million (city-proper population of 1.8 million) in just 150 years. A cultural melting pot with some of the world's cheapest 5-star hotels, great shopping, even better food and some of nature's wonders in just an hour away, this dynamic city has much to offer for every visitor.
See in Kuala Lumpur
===================
Kuala Lumpur is short on must-see attractions: beyond the Petronas Twin Towers, the real joy lies in wandering randomly, seeing, shopping and eating your way through it.
KL hosts an amazing variety of architectural delights. The grandest old British colonial buildings lie in the city centre and include the former offices of the Colonial Secretariat (now the Sultan Abdul Samad Building) on Merdeka Square and the old Kuala Lumpur Railway station. They blend themes from the architecture of Britain and North Africa. On Merdeka Square's west side, looking like a rejected transplant straight from Stratford-upon-Avon is the Royal Selangor Club. Near Merdeka Square is Masjid Jamek, a charming Moorish-style mosque set at a confluence on the Klang River. The National Mosque, Masjid Negara, (1965) celebrates the bold ambitions of the newly independent Malaysia. The National Monument in the pretty Lake Gardens is inspired by the Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. The ASEAN sculpture garden is nearby. Also in the lake gardens is Carcosa Seri Negara, the former residence of the British High Commissioner, which now houses an upmarket hotel and colonial-style tea rooms. While some buildings in the high-rise Golden Triangle, such as the KL Tower, are uninspired copies of other famous structures, the Petronas Twin Towers are truly marvelous.
Within the city centre is also the fascinating narrow streets of Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur's traditional commercial district, with its many Chinese shops and places to eat.
KL is hot, humid and sometimes crowded, so schedule some cooling off in air-conditioned shopping malls or restaurants. You may find that most attractions are only crowded on weekends and holidays and are otherwise deserted on weekdays.
Do in Kuala Lumpur
====================
KL is mainly known for its eating and shopping, which are adequately covered by the Eat and Buy sections.
Other activities include usual urban sports such as golfing, cycling, running, jogging and horse riding. If you’re into rock climbing, the Batu Caves in the Northern suburbs is popular. However given Malaysia's stunning terrain, you’re better off heading to other places for anything more strenuous or challenging.
Several good theatres and performance halls have emerged as part of Malaysia's drive to encourage greater cultural expression. These include the National Theatre (Istana Budaya) and the KL Performing Arts Centre (KLPac) in the northern part of the city, the KL Philharmonic in the Twin Towers, and the Actors Studio at Lot 10.
Leading museums in the city centre are the National Museum, which covers the region's history, and the well-regarded Islamic Arts Museum, which houses a small but captivating collection. Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery is a modern museum linked to the country's national bank with well-designed galleries on Malaysian economic development, Islamic finance, the history of the central bank, and the national's banks own art collection.
Pampering and spas can be found in several five-star hotels and independent centres in the Golden Triangle. There's also nail parlours and beauty salons, which are generally good value, there's also high-end ones offering similar services for a premium. Reflexology and foot massage places are everywhere, especially in Bukit Bintang in the Golden Triangle and in Chinatown.
Kuala Lumpur also has several theme parks around the city and in the surrounding cities. The most famous of these parks is Sunway Lagoon in the neighbouring city of Subang Jaya.
===================
====================
The theme park has rides, a huge waterpark, an extreme park for adventure junkies, a scream park for those wanting a good scare, and a petting zoo for children. Sunway Lagoon is a 40 minute drive from central Kuala Lumpur in good traffic.
You can also watch the local football match at the KLFA Stadium in Cheras. Kuala Lumpur FA is a football team based in Kuala Lumpur and currently plays in the top divison of football in Malaysia. the Malaysia Super League. Match schedule and fixture can be seen at the KLFA website.

Travel video about destination Kenya.
Founded by Alexander The Great in 332 B.C., the city of Alexandria is located in the Nile Delta and it was here that Caesar and Mark Anthony fell under Cleopatra’s spell.Cairo is Africa’s largest city and the heart of the Arab world, extreme poverty living next to opulent wealth, and modern, Western boutiques next to ancient souks.

Visitors and tourists have been coming to the Holy Land for years for religious reasons and out of interest in the region. Each year millions visit Bethlehem in the West Bank as part of pilgrimage tours. But, unbeknownst to many tourists, sites and activities beyond the traditional Bethlehem visit abound throughout the West Bank. Difficulties in movement due to lack of borders and Israeli checkpoints and a continuing perception of the West Bank as dangerous mean that much of the natural beauty and archaeological sites of the West Bank go unexplored by tourists. Since 2005 though, the tourism sector in the West Bank has been making progress. Tourism now represents 13% of Palestinian GDP. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities recently announced that the number of visits rose by 28 % between 2011 and 2012. Working to develop the Palestinian tourism sector, tourism workers and professionals are thinking about how to address the various challenges and obstacles that confront them and the tourism industry.

Globe Trekker Zay Harding explores the Holy Lands - a fascinating region with a unique religious, historical and political identity. He visits the ancient city of Jerusalem and ventures into the Palestinian West Bank where he explores one of the world's natural wonders, the Dead Sea.
In Jerusalem Zay visits the iconic Dome of The Rock, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Western Wall. He gets a lesson in orthodox Jewish fashion and takes an historical walk along the old city ramparts before filling up on visions of the End of Days in one of the oldest cemeteries in the world.
Zay takes a local bus to the Palestinian West Bank and visits the bustling city of Ramallah. Travel into the West Bank might seem scary at first as the journey passes kilometers of separation walls and military check points but - once inside - Zay enjoys the richness of the culture and food. He visits the father of the Palestinian Liberation Movement, Yasser Arafat's Tomb and chats to some of the locals about life in the West Bank before checking out the extraordinary graffiti along its separation wall.
To end his journey Zay travels to the lowest place on earth, the Dead Sea and takes a therapeutic dip in its incredibly buoyant water.

Palestine vs Israel Conflict - Conflict In The West Bank
The West Bank is a landlocked territory near the Mediterranean shore of Western Asia, forming the mass of the Palestinian territories. The West Bank shares boundaries (marked off by the Jordanian-Israeli armistice of 1949) to the west, north, and southern with the state of Israel, and to the eastern, throughout the Jordan River, with Jordan. The West Bank also contains a significant shoreline along the western bank of the Dead Sea.
The international community considers Israeli negotiations in the West Bank, consisting of East Jerusalem, prohibited under worldwide legislation, though Israel disputes this. The International Court of Justice advising ruling (2004) concluded that occasions that came after the 1967 occupation of the West Bank by Israel, consisting of the Jerusalem Law, Israel's peace treaty with Jordan and the Oslo Accords, did not change the status of the West Bank (consisting of East Jerusalem) as occupied territory with Israel as the inhabiting power.
The resolution marked the territory explained as "the hill country of Samaria and Judea" (including exactly what is now known as the "West Bank") as component of the suggested Arab state, yet following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War this area was captured by Transjordan (relabelled Jordan 2 years after independence in 1946).

Israeli checkpoints in the occupied West Bank have become part of everyday life for the thousands of Palestinians who must pass through them daily.
Israel claims that the checkpoints are vital to stop suicide bombers entering its cities.
But critics say they are a form of collective punishment - effectively sealing off Palestinian cities, hindering travel and access to schools and medical care and jeopardising any hopes for peace.
Hazem al-Qawasmeh, the founder of Karama, or the International Campaign for Freedom of Movement for Palestinians, says: "These military checkpoints restrict Palestinians' movement and turn their cities into prisons. The West Bank has now become a big prison. It is separated from the Gaza Strip and Jerusalem.
"Qalandiya checkpoint is one of the worst checkpoints in the West Bank. Palestinians have to wait there for hours as they try to cross from the West Bank to Jerusalem."
Hard Crossings follows the Palestinians who must navigate these checkpoints and for whom they have become a frustrating and often humiliating feature of daily life.
At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives. We bring topics to light that often go under-reported, listening to all sides of the story and giving a 'voice to the voiceless.'

ABSTRACT
When I first visited the Palestinian territories, I was afraid I would have to hide my identity as an American and possibly wear a headscarf. To my surprise, I was warmly welcomed exactly as I was, and after more than two years living and working there, it remains one of my favorite spots on earth. The people are charming and generous, the landscape is gorgeous, and the parties, concerts, and beer gardens in Ramallah are world-class.
But behind all this looms the conflict, the occupation, and violence. Since September 2000, more than 5,500 Palestinians and 1,100 Israelis have been killed. A series of walls, fences, roadblocks, checkpoints, army bases, and settlements keep the Palestinians in the West Bank under an almost constant state of siege and strangle the economy of many towns and villages, including Bethlehem. Gaza has been turned into an open-air prison whose desperate inmates can only get vital supplies through smuggling tunnels -- which also transport weapons that Palestinian militants use to target Israeli civilians.
Using photographs, stories, and statistics, this presentation colors in the Palestinian experience, with all its complexity and contradictions, as it is rarely shown on the news or in books. It is a fascinating world of beauty and terror, of hospitality and homicide, of the absurd and the sublime constantly together -- a microcosmic view of a little-understood human story with global implications.
Speaker: Pamela Olson
Pamela Olson graduated from Stanford in 2002 with a major in physics. She lived in Ramallah, West Bank, for a year and a half beginning in the summer of 2004 and worked as a journalist for the Palestine Monitor. She interviewed the first elected female mayor in the West Bank, witnessed the 2005 Disengagement from inside the Gaza Strip, and served as the foreign press coordinator for Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi's Presidential campaign against Mahmoud Abbas in January 2005. She later worked for a year at the Institute for Defense Analyses in Washington, DC. She is now writing a book about her time in the West Bank called Fast Times in Palestine.
