No state in the world recognizes this country. Its passport and currency are not valid anywhere. For Pridnestrovie, better known as Transnistria, it is the all day life since 23 years. Own parliament, military, money and an anthem created a new identity.
Placed right in between Ukraine and Moldova, Transnistria is a frequent guest of regional current affairs. However the media titles are not very welcoming: „black hole“, „a-want-to-be-state“, „the last Soviet Republic“, etc. Monuments dedicated to Lenin and communist symbols still make the headlines, but what is hidden behind the visible facade? How do Transnistrians live and what are their worries? „A Day in Transnistria“ lifts the veil for the lives of ordinary citizens of an unrecognized republic. Their hopes, fears and daily routine are shown in this debut piece, produced by Alisa Bauchina, Simon Erhardt and Martin Franke.

Transnistria, part of Moldova, is a breakaway state that is only recognized as state by other breakaway states such as South-Ossetia and Abkhazia, while Russia supports Transnistria, and is de facto controlling the region in a "decisive" manner.
This 'rogue state' dubbed Europe's Cuba is just 4165 square kilometres of land lying between the borders of Europe and Ukraine. It is a breakaway region, like South Ossetia and Abkhazia, which declared its independence from Moldova in 1990.
Transnistria has its own money, stamps and passports, which are unrecognised by anyone else and useless outside its borders. They choose to follow their own direction and consider the rest of the world their enemy.
Revenue is largely derived from criminal activity, including weapons smuggling and woman trafficking, crimes which go unpunished by corrupt authorities.
Many secrets are hidden within the borders of Transnistria, and that is the way they like it.
A team of documentary makers, Peter Tetteroo, Cornelis van der Jagt and cinematographer Ruud Denslagen entered Transnistria on the pretence of filming a military parade, and discovered that once inside the border secrets are not hard to uncover.

The Anthem of Transnistria is named We sing the praises of Transnistria (Romanian: Slăvită să fii, Nistrene, Moldovan: Слэвитэ сэ фий, Нистрене, Russian: Мы славим тебя, Приднестровье, Ukrainian: Ми славимо тебе, Придністров'я). The music was written by Boris Alexandrovich Alexandrov, and the lyrics by Boris Parmenov, Nicholas Bozhko and Vitaly Pishenko. The anthem has lyrics in all three official languages of Transnistria: Moldovan, Russian, Ukrainian. They are, however, not all literal translations of one another. The origin of the anthem was from the Russian patriotic song "Long live our Power" (Да здравствует наша держава), a 1943 composition that was one of the proposed songs to be the anthem of the former Soviet Union. Boris Alexandrov's composition was however rejected in favor of the one submitted by his father, Alexander Alexandrov.

The breakway pro-Russian territory in Molvdova went through a civil war after the collapse of the Soviet Union to preserve its linguistic and cultural ties with Russia. Transdniestria - aka Trans-Dniester Transniestria, Transnistria.
Please visit www.simonreeve.co.uk for more information.
Simon Reeve travels to a group of unrecognised nations -- countries so obscure they don't officially exist -- in this five-part BBC TV series, shown on BBC2, BBC World and by broadcasters in more than 40 countries.
On his journey he visits little-known parts of the world including Somaliland, Transniestria, Nagorno-Karabakh, Ajaria, South Ossetia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Somalia, Moldova, Taiwan, and the former Soviet republic of Georgia.
In this series, Simon Reeve is taught to fish by the President of Moldova, becomes an unofficial Somali diplomat, and finds himself crammed into a lift with the President of Georgia.
He visits a little-known country stuck in a Soviet-era time-warp, and a mountainous state which claims to have the highest rate of longevity on the planet. Simon also discovers abandoned missiles capable of destroying skyscrapers, al Qaeda terrorists in an African jail and the mass graves of children killed by soldiers.
Simon meets a blonde popstar who's a crackshot with an AK-47, a mournful guitarist, and a Taiwanese boy band. He climbs the world's tallest building, visits the site of the battle in Black Hawk Down, is electrocuted in Mogadishu, finds 5,000 year old rock paintings, buys himself a new Somali passport from a man called Mr Big Beard, and is held as a spy by the Transniestrian KGB.
Snake blood is on the menu in Asia, rock-hard yoghurt in the Caucuses, camel milk in Africa and two bottles of cognac when Simon is forced to celebrate independence with a Communist politician.
He meets a villager who sold a kidney to buy a cow, and children forced to live in freezing railway carriages. Amid the minefields of Nagorno-Karabkh, Simon is pelted with snowballs by refugee children. But in the sweltering heat of Mogadishu he needs a dozen armed gunmen just to stay alive.
------------------------------------
Reviews of the series:
Daily Telegraph: An 'exemplary series...riveting...eye-opening...remarkable...superb'
Evening Standard (London): 'Compelling television, lifted way above a worthy travelogue by Reeve's obvious, sincere interest in the people and places he encounters'
Daily Mail: "Unmissable...makes the blood boil...It would be good if this brave programme stirred a few consciences. Shaming."
The Times: A 'consistently informative series...Reeve is an ideal guide -- brave without being macho, amused without being frivolous and always informative'
Globe and Mail (Canada): 'Places That Don't Exist is outstanding television. That's because Simon Reeve, the host/reporter, is endlessly curious and incredibly brave. When we last encountered Reeve he was showing us around "the Stans," countries such as Kazakhstan, that few outsiders visit. It was an excellent series, exceptionally revealing of both the general and specific. Reeve is now one of the great TV figures. A smart and cheerful Englishman, he's a combination of Michael Palin and serious political reporter.'

SIMON REEVE is an adventurer, TV presenter and New York Times bestselling author with a passion for travel, current affairs, history, conservation and the environment. He has been around the world three times for the BBC series Equator, Tropic of Capricorn, and Tropic of Cancer, and has travelled extensively in more than 100 countries. Simon's last journey around the Tropic of Cancer enthralled millions and was described by The Times of London as: "a real gem...Reeve is in a class of his own". Readers of a leading travel magazine voted it their favourite TV series. Simon, who is an ambassador for the nature conservation organisation WWF, has been awarded a One World Broadcasting Trust award for an "outstanding contribution to greater world understanding". His books include Tropic of Capricorn (published by BBC Books), and The New Jackals: Ramzi Yousef, Osama bin Laden and the future of terrorism, which warned of a new age of apocalyptic terrorism, and was the first in the world on bin Laden and al Qaeda. Originally published in 1998 it has been a New York Times bestseller. Simon has contributed to other studies into organised crime, terrorism, biological warfare and corruption. His book One Day in September: the story of the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre was published in 2000. The film of the same name, narrated by the actor Michael Douglas, won an Oscar for best feature documentary.

For more on my trip to Transnistria, you can read the following article from my website:
http://www.languagetsar.com/adventure-travel-to-transnistria-what-is-it-really-like-to-cross-the-border
In the short video above, you will learn about the reality of crossing the border to Transnistria from Moldova and catch a glimpse of the sights of its capital city, Tiraspol. The people of Tiraspol were extremely friendly and welcoming. In spite of the horror stories abounding online of intimidation at gunpoint being used by the Transnistrian border guards to extort money from Western tourists, this was not my personal experience at the border. The border officials were polite and professional in their conduct.
You can view subtitles of the video's transcript by selecting the language you want in the 'cc' box or 'closed captions' box. So far I have added this option for English.

http://davidsbeenhere.com In this episode, David tours this breakaway state of Moldova to show you what to see in Transnistria, a unique place with many Soviet traditions. Transnistria declared independence from Moldova in 1990. It still forms part of Moldova but relies on Russia for military and economic support. The United Nations doesn’t recognize Transnistria but it remains an autonomous state that tourists are welcome to explore.
David begins his tour of Transnistria at the History and Military Memorial in the city of Bendery – a memorial dedicated to the fallen soldiers of three wars (WWII, Russo-Turkish War, and the civil war of Transnistria that took place from in 1992). David’s guide Natalia explains a little bit more about the memorial.
David’s second stop is the 16th century Bendery Fortress built during Ottoman rule. The fortress is about 69 square hectares and has a museum inside. One exhibit displays military artifacts and memorabilia from the civil war of Transnistria in 1992.
Afterwards, David and Natalia continue their tour of what to see in Transnistria by heading to the capital city of Tiraspol, which also happens to be the second-largest city in Moldova. They make a stop at two other war memorials commemorating the fallen soldiers of several wars and a famous Russian general, Alexandr Suvorov. In case you’re wondering, the Soviets were big on building war memorials!
After exploring the main sites of Transnistria, David and Natalia make their way to Kumanek Tavern Restaurant to try some traditional Ukrainian food such as Borshch (vegetable soup made out of beets, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, onions, and garlic). The beets are what give it its intense red color. David also tries Kiev cutlet with potatoes and mushrooms.
Not one to miss the opportunity to try a local alcoholic beverage, David enjoys a 10-year-old glass of cognac by the well-known Transnistrian label KVINT.
And finally, David shares 5 facts about Transnistria you may not know:
1. Transnistria has its own President
2. Transnistria uses its own currency
3. Transnistria produces caviar
4. Transnistria produces world-class cognac
5. Russian is the official language
So there you have it – A guide of what to see in Transnistria. It’s not a place for everyone and isn’t your typical European country, but that’s what traveling is all about – discovering new places around the world!
If you want to travel to Transnistria, I highly recommend contacting Ways Travel Moldova. Their English-speaking guides will organize your trip to Moldova and Transnistria perfectly around the places you want to visit.

The political conflict over Ukraine is also threatening to spill over into Moldova. Russia and Romania are already currying favor with the country’s citizens.
Like in Ukraine, opinion is split in the former Soviet country. While many Moldovans want to see closer relations with the European Union, others feel an affinity to Russia. Until now Russia has been the only country Moldovans could travel to without a visa. The EU recently decided to lift certain visa restrictions, however. Next-door Romania, meanwhile, wants to go a step further and secure unification with Moldova; EU passports are already being issued to Moldovan citizens with Romanian roots.
-------------------------------
2.
Some citizens and activists in Odessa, Transnistria, and Moldova favour joining the Russian Federation.

3.
As Moldova prepares to sign an association agreement with the EU, the sympathies of its Gagauz minority lie with Moscow.

wn.com/La Transnistria Punta Ad Aderire Alla Russia Reporter

This video shows us crossing the border between the Ukraine and Transnistria on our bikes (the camera-bike is a Ducati ST4S-ABS and the other bike is a Suzuki B-King).
During our motorcycle tour through Eastern Europe in summer 2011, we spent two days and one night in Tiraspol, the capital of Transnistria. Transnistria (aka Приднестровье/Pridnestrovie) is a breakaway territory located between the Dniester River and the eastern Moldovan border.
Transnistria represents an autonomous, de facto independent state which is a part of the Commonwealth of Unrecognized States and a fascinating "time capsule" of the former Soviet Union. The statue shown between 2:13-2:15 is Lenin. The parade at the end of the video was the "last day of school celebration" (3:05-3:10 were recorded at the graduation ceremony)

People&Power; reports from Transnistria, a state only Russia recognizes.
Good report.

Transnistria (official name Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic; in Russian Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublika, PMR) is a part of Moldova that declared its independence in 1990, resulting in a civil war that lasted until 1992. Transnistria has not been recognised by any United
Nations member but maintains its functional autonomy with military and other support from Russia.
But you can travell it, it seems to be quite nice:
Local wine and cognac are excellent and cheap. The Kvint factory is
situated in Tiraspol, and Tiraspol has a Kvint store, offering
incredible deals on Kvint products. Kvint produces arguably the best
Cognac in the former Soviet Union, but is extremely hard to come by in
Western countries (though Moldovan supermarkets will carry it). A trip
to Transnistria is not complete without a sample. There is also a soft
drink that is sold in the streets called Kvas. For about 50 US cents you
can get a big cold cup of Kvas which is a Russian version of Root Beer.
Anyone considering trying it should definitely go through with it, it
is historic and good.
The physical dangers of Transnistria are almost non-existent. The
major cities are much safer than Western European and American cities of
similar size and economic makeup. Also, despite the political situation
with Moldova, there is essentially no threat of being caught in a
military action. There has not been fighting in Transnistria for many
years. Indeed, Transnistria is a very safe place for travel. By far the
biggest threat to the traveller is scamming.
Despite scare reports, Tiraspol is very welcoming, mainly because
it gets so few tourists. Young people tend to speak English and are
helpful. The city is well-policed. Street crime is low.
Many Transnistrians are excited to see foreigners and will be
very welcoming, if a bit shy at first. Some, however, see foreigners as
being sources of easy money. Always negotiate the price of a taxi before
you get in. Use pen and paper if you are not a Russian speaker. Ask
about the prices of items before you order them at a bar or restaurant.
It is not common to be scammed, but it is far from rare. However, even
when scams are attempted, it is often for no more than a few euros.
The new president is cracking down hard on bribery- just call the
hotline if any police attempt to extort bribes from you (which is very
unlikely at this point). Also, be aware that while enforcement is not
particularly strict, drinking on the street has recently been made
illegal and while this reform is (needless to say) extremely unpopular,
it's probably best to avoid any run-ins with the police.
