Herodotus (
/hɨˈrɒdətəs/; Ancient Greek: Ἡρόδοτος Hēródotos) was an ancient Greek historian who was born in Halicarnassus, Caria (modern day Bodrum, Turkey) and lived in the fifth century BC (circa 484 – 425 BC). He has been called the "Father of History", and was the first historian known to collect his materials systematically, test their accuracy to a certain extent and arrange them in a well-constructed and vivid narrative.The Histories—his masterpiece and the only work he is known to have produced—is a record of his "inquiry" (or ἱστορία historía, a word that passed into Latin and acquired its modern meaning of "history"), being an investigation of the origins of the Greco-Persian Wars and including a wealth of geographical and ethnographical information. Although some of his stories were fanciful, he claimed he was reporting only what had been told to him. Little is known of his personal history.
The Histories, otherwise known as The Researches or The Inquiries, were divided by later Alexandrian editors into nine books, named after the nine Muses: the "Muse of History", Clio, representing the first book, then Euterpe, Thaleia, Melpomene, Terpsichore, Erato, Polymnia, Ourania and Calliope for books 2 to 9, respectively. At its simplest and broadest level of meaning, The Histories is structured as a dynastic history of four Persian kings:

The Battle of Marathon was a battle that took place in 490 BC in Attica, Greece, between the independent city-state of Athens and the vast Persian Empire.
The Persian force of approximately 30,000 infantry, arches and cavalry landed at the Bay of Marathon to encounter an Athenian hoplite force of approximately 10,000 heavy infantry in a defensive position.
Instead of holding back, the Athenians charged the Persians, routed the Persian wings and turned on the centre, putting the whole Persian army to flight and forcing those left alive to escape via their ships.
The battle was chronicled by Herodotus in his work The Histories (Enquiries).

Dr. Carmen Boulter revealed an astounding new discovery in Egypt found using a state-of-the-art, satellite-based deep penetrating radar scan. The scan reveals 82 enormous chambers on two distinct levels at great depth near a largely unknown pyramid south of Cairo (view related images). The history of the deep underground site stretches from Herodotus in 450 BC to an excavation in 1881 by William Flinders Petrie. There are four distinct layers-- with the first layer Roman, the second layer Ptolemaic (Antony & Cleopatra era), while the two lower, older layers, remain mysterious and go down 60 feet, and 130 feet. The find is 107 acres-- the equivalent of 81 football fields, with five of the rooms bigger than Olympic-sized swimming pools. "I don't think it was at the surface and all that sand accumulated over the top over time. I think it was meant to be underground from the get go," she surmised. If you look at the scan, the chambers and the two deeper levels are not connected, which suggests they may be from different time periods, she noted. Boulter theorized it's possible that ancient ET visitors used the underground chambers to initially orient or acculturate to our planet. She also spoke about the advanced technology of the ancient Egyptians and how they were a seafaring people, with evidence of visiting and trading with the Americas.

In this talk at the IQ2 Great Explorers festival on 28th October 2011, Justin Marozzi leads us in the footsteps of Herodotus, the father of history and its first explorer 'in a number of senses of the word'. His travels through Ancient Asia Minor were extensive and, if his accounts are to be believed, punctuated with extraordinary encounters: he writes of dog-headed, mountain-dwelling men, of gold-digging ants in India, and of the fabulous flying snakes of Arabia. With his interest in the peoples he encountered, he was 'a multiculturalist before the term existed,' driven by irrepressible curiosity, which in Marozzi's view, is 'the hallmark of a great explorer.'
His achievements were astounding, and his preoccupation with Egypt -- to which one third of The Histories is devoted, despite its pretension of being a book about the Persian Wars -- is made clear when Marozzi highlights that, back in the 5th century BC, the pyramids were as old to Herodotus as he is to us. Herodotus is praised as the first great explorer: like all great writers, he remains relevant long after his death, with many a timeless line to his name, including Marozzi's closing statement: 'Often enough, God gives man a glimpse of happiness - then utterly ruins him.'

Elton got into Classical Studies not via school but children's BBC: the futuristic cartoon Ulysses 31 and the retelling of Homer by Tony Robinson (Blackadder's Baldrick). He is also using the latest computer technology to explore the world of the fifth-century BC Greek historian Herodotus in terms of networks not an East/West polarity, and bring that world into everyone's home through GoogleEarth.
