Stan and Arlene Ginsburg Family Foundation Lecture Series
Ronald J. Granieri
Executive Director, FPRI Center for the Study of America and the West
To celebrate FPRI's 60th Anniversary, we have devoted this year’s Ginsburg Series to lectures on geopolitics and how it can be used to understand the greatest challenges facing the United States today. FPRI’s founder, Robert Strausz-Hupé, introduced the term, “geopolitics,” into the American vocabulary in 1942 with the publication of his book Geopolitics: The Struggle for Space and Power. Simply put, geopolitics offers a perspective on contemporary international affairs that is anchored in the study of history, geography and culture, or as FPRI’s James Kurth has put it, in the study of the “realities and mentalities of the localities.” Strausz-Hupé embedded that perspective in FPRI and it remains today our method or, to use today's language, our “brand.”
In the first event of this series, join FPRI's Ron Granieri, as he examines the meaning, the method, and the importance of using geopolitics to study conemporary world affairs. Granieri is the Executive Director of FPRI's Center for the Study of America and the West and is the host of Geopolitics with Granieri, our monthly, members-only series held at FPRI and on the web. He is also the Director of Research at The University of Pennsylvania's Lauder Institute. Granieri received his Ph.D. in History from the University of Chicago.

FPRI founder Robert Strausz-Hupé once observed that “world history is not a succession of happy endings.” If we needed a reminder, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has provided it. What is to become of Ukraine? How to discern Russian intentions beyond Ukraine? How to assess the West’s capacity to respond? To explore these questions, we are pleased to feature an outstanding scholar of European politics and diplomacy – Jakub Grygiel, the George H.W. Bush Associate Professor of International Relations at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced
International Studies. Grygiel is also a Senior fellow at FPRI and at the Center for European Policy Analysis. Author of Great Powers and Geopolitical Change (Johns Hopkins Press), he received his Ph.D. from Princeton University. He writes regularly for all the major journals of commentary as well as in US, Swiss, Polish, and Italian newspapers. He has been a consultant to the OECD and the World Bank.

On January 7, 2015, as part of the JHU/APL Rethinking Seminar Series - Rethinking Global Security Constructs, Threats and Potential Responses (2014-15), Robert D. Kaplan (Senior Fellow, Center for a New American Security) discussed "Chinese Views, Strategy and Geopolitics."
Mr. Kaplan focused on China's own geopolitics and how the South and East China Seas, India, Korea, Russia, all look from a Chinese perspective. He also explored the concept that China's ability to challenge the US international order will depend on how China handles its near-abroad as well as its own economy.
Mr. Kaplan is the bestselling author of fifteen books on foreign affairs and travel translated into many languages, including Asia’s Cauldron, The Revenge of Geography, Monsoon, Balkan Ghosts, and Eastward to Tartary. He is a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security and a contributing editor at The Atlantic, where his work first appeared three decades ago. He was chief geopolitical analyst at Stratfor, a visiting professor at the United States Naval Academy, and a member of the Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board. Foreign Policy magazine twice named him one of the world’s “Top 100 Global Thinkers.”

Nigeria is located in western Africa on the Gulf of Guinea. The country’s size is comparable to that of Venezuela, or twice the size of the US state of California. But unlike either of these comparisons, Nigeria’s population level is many times higher. With about 178 million people, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa, and the seventh most populous in the world. However, not all Nigerians speak the same language or share the same ethnicity. An important thing to understand about Nigeria is that it is a multicultural state. There are about 400 different ethnic groups from a number of distinct cultural groups, with the largest being the Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba and the Fulani ethnic groups. Nigerian politics has traditionally been managed by these four.
Considering its large population, economy and industrial output, the country is frequently referred to as the ‘Giant of Africa’. Nigeria’s external power project is evident in its economic influence throughout the continent, as Nigerian businessmen are active all over the region. This refers to legal businesses as well as to black market sectors like arms trade, drug trade, human trafficking, business scams, etc. Furthermore, the government in Abuja uses a number of pan-African organizations to bolster its international image as a reliable state and the gateway to Africa. Yet, despite the country’s economic and demographic influence, Nigeria’s foreign policy is significantly restricted due to the country’s domestic politics.
In this analysis we will look at the geopolitics of Nigeria, what shapes its domestic politics and what can we expect for the future of Nigeria.

To understand the Middle East, a region riven by conflict, you need an expert "geopolitician" to explain the chessboard -- for example, in finding the balance to our interest in defeating the
Islamic State with our interest in preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear weapons state or in exercising hegemony over the region. Few analysts are better able to explain the sources of conflict or their potential resolution in their larger historical, cultural, and geographical contexts than Adam Garfinkle.
In this year of our 60th anniversary, we take special note of those, like Adam, who got their start in this field at the Foreign Policy Research Institute. Adam went on to serve on the staff of the US National Security Commission/21st Century, then as principal speechwriter to the Secretary of State (Colin Powell). He has also been editor of The National Interest magazine and is now editor of The American Interest magazine, both significant sources of analysis and understanding of American foreign policy choices today. He received his Ph.D. in international relations from the University of Pennsylvania and serves on FPRI's Board of Advisors.

Foreign Policy Round Table for Rising Philadelphians
Sponsored by BNY Mellon Wealth Management

Oil has been fuel and lubricant for international conflict ever since the development of the internal combustion engine, but recent technological developments have given oil an even greater geopolitical significance. For the past four decades, regimes from the Persian Gulf to Russia to Venezuela have used oil wealth to advance national and ideological agendas and to exert influence over the policies of industrialized nations, especially the United States. The emergence of Canadian Tar Sands as a major oil source and the fracking boom across North America, however, have upended traditional thinking about who produces oil, who imports it, and the political leverage that oil wealth can provide. Plentiful supplies and plummeting prices are a godsend for consumers, but a potential nightmare for societies dependent on oil revenue, with potential consequences for the global economy and balance of power that are still being calculated.
Joining us for this edition of the Round Table are FPRI Senior Fellows Frank R. Gunter and Wojtek Wolfe, as well as Steven Kopits, Managing Director of Princeton Energy Advisors.

Contrary to popular belief, the conduct of nations on the international stage is almost never driven by moral considerations, but rather by a shadowy cocktail of money and geopolitics. As such, when you see the mouthpieces of the ruling class begin to demonize a foreign country, the first question in your mind should always be "what is actually at stake here?"
For some time now Russia, China, Iran, and Syria have been in the cross hairs. Once you understand why, the events unfolding in the world right now will make much more sense.
The U.S. dollar is a unique currency. In fact its current design and its relationship to geopolitics is unlike any other in history. Though it has been the world reserve currency since 1944, this is not what makes it unique. Many currencies have held the reserve status off and on over the centuries, but what makes the dollar unique is the fact that since the early 1970s it has been, with a few notable exceptions, the only currency used to buy and sell oil on the global market.
Prior to 1971 the U.S. dollar was bound to the gold standard, at least officially. According to the IMF, by 1966, foreign central banks held $14 billion U.S. dollars, however the United States had only $3.2 billion in gold allocated to cover foreign holdings.
Translation: the Federal Reserve was printing more money than it could actually back.
The result was rampant inflation and a general flight from the dollar.
In 1971 in what later came to be called the "Nixon Shock" President Nixon removed the dollar from the gold standard completely.
At this point the dollar became a pure debt based currency. With debt based currencies money is literally loaned into existence.
Approximately 70% of the money in circulation is created by ordinary banks which are allowed to loan out more than they actually have in their accounts.
The rest is created by the Federal Reserve which loans money that they don't have, mostly to government.
Kind of like writing hot checks, except it's legal, for banks. This practice which is referred to as fractional reserve banking is supposedly regulated by the Federal Reserve, an institution which just happens to be owned and controlled by a conglomerate of banks, and no agency or branch of government regulates the Federal Reserve.

The current state of European geopolitics is the focus of this panel discussion, specifically the implications of geopolitics for economic growth—considering both the challenges and the opportunities. Participants will explore challenges, such as the conflict in Syria and subsequent migration crisis, Russia-EU relations, and security “wild cards” elsewhere on the continent that have potentially destabilizing implications for the private sector. What are the implications for European domestic politics and what could this mean for business? How should European policy makers and CEOs best navigate these challenges? Could the challenges offer alternative pathways to growth by bolstering investment in the defense sector? Could new waves of immigrants ultimately bolster the service sector and provide care for aging Europeans?

Geopolitics and an analysis of the powerplay between global political, economic, corporate and industrial forces is central to many so called conspiracy theories. Yet most people associate the term with a belief in royal lizards and masonic cabals.
In this video we look at why an understanding of geopolitics is important for most people who are labelled conspiracy theorists. We unpick some of the rationale behind geopolitical theories and look at why it si something that we should all be concerned with. We also look at what ordinary people like us can do to effect it.
Tinged with humour, though sometimes gard to identify, this is a quick intro to anyone who wants a brief introduction to both geopolitics and evidence based conspiracy theory.

On A.I. and Cities: Platform Design, Algorithmic Perception, and Urban Geopolitics
“Intelligence” is one way that matter organizes itself into durable complexity. A special form of that complexity is the city: a settled accumulation of a material intelligence, both human and inhuman. As Artificial Intelligence becomes more sophisticated what will be its urban design project? What should it be?
Computation has evolved into a planetary-scale megastructure. It is both a vast envelope that frames cities and an elemental substance that helps define every object; we are both inside of it and it is inside of us. Some designers (architects) may see software as something added onto space. They see the idea of smart cities as stupid because it assumes that cities are not already intelligent. They are right. Some designers (programmers) may see cities as modules of hardware that fit together, one at a time into that megastructural matrix. They too are right, and so one mode of design is nested in the other. Seen together, the Smart City is inside the Internet of Things just as the Internet of Things is inside the Smart City.
In this wide-ranging new lecture, Design Theorist, Benjamin H. Bratton, maps the city layer of The Stack, the computational megastructure we have, and outlines how cities may evolve in relation to computationally-rich algorithmic perception, sensation, cognition and physical automation. From deep infrastructure to immediate affects, what we today gather under the name “artificial intelligence” will shift not only what counts as “thinking” but also what counts as architecture, design, politics and programming.
The implications of A.I. platforms for our geopolitics are profound, and extend from the biochemistries of climates and ecosystems to the rhetorical conventions of citizenship and sovereignty. Bratton argues that the Anthropocene should be understood as the geologic expression of a Humanist illusion that cannot survive an honest encounter with the philosophical and practical implications of pervasive artificial intelligence. Along the faultlines of that encounter, the work of Design begins.
Benjamin H. Bratton is an author whose work spans Philosophy, Computing and Design. He is Associate Professor of Visual Arts, Director of The Center for Design and Geopolitics, and founder of the Speculative Design undergraduate major at the University of California, San Diego in La Jolla. He is also Professor of Digital Design at The European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, and Visiting Professor of Critical Studies at SCI_Arc The Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles.
He has two new books. In The Stack: On Software and Sovereignty (MIT Press, 2015) Bratton develops a comprehensive political and design theory of planetary-scale computation. He proposes that The Stack –an accidental information technology megastructure– is both a computational apparatus and a model for a new geopolitical architecture. Dispute Plan to Prevent Future Luxury Constitution (e-flux/ Sternberg Press, 2015) is a collection of architectural fictions.
Bratton’s current book projects develops a critical design philosophy for robotics and synthetic intelligence. Other design and consulting projects focus on intersections of computation from molecular to ecological scale, machine vision/ sensing/ intelligence, and new sovereignties and platforms better suited to our Anthropogenic predicament.
The History and Theory of New Media Lecture Series brings to campus leading humanities scholars working on issues of media transition and technological emergence. The series promotes new, interdisciplinary approaches to questions about the uses, meanings, causes, and effects of rapid or dramatic shifts in techno-infrastructure, information management, and forms of mediated expression. Presented by the Berkeley Center for New Media, these events are free and open to the public.

Geopolitics of East Asia: the Future of Japan-China Relations
As the year 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, East Asia’s security landscape faces a set of challenges with continuing and unresolved tensions, while improvements can be seen in relations between some of the countries. There are signs of a thaw in Japan-China diplomacy, but the state of Japan-South Korea relations remains unsettling. Against this background, what should be Japan’s foreign policy priorities? How would PM Abe’s objectives of strengthening Japan’s security impact on the shifting balance of power in East Asia? The panel of experts from Japan, China and the U.S. will map out East Asia’s current geopolitical landscape and address key questions on regional security relations. (Duration: 57:49)

Speaker: Dr Pippa Malmgren
Recorded on 13 January 2015 in New Theatre, East Building.
Economic signals are everywhere, from magazine covers to grocery stores to military events. They reveal the story of the world economy. By being alert to signals anyone can start to navigate through the turbulence to the treasures of the world economy, instead of being overwhelmed and surprised by it.
Pippa Malmgren (@DrPippaM) is Founder of DRPM Group and a former US Presidential Adviser. She is an alumna of LSE. This event marks the publication of her new book, Signals: the breakdown of the social contract and the rise of geopolitics.
Dr Malmgren served as financial market advisor to the President in the White House and on the National Economic Council from 2001-2002. She was a member of the President's Working Group on Financial Markets and the Working Group on Corporate Governance. She dealt with Enron, Sarbanes Oxley as well the Anti-Money Laundering provisions of the Patriot Act and had responsibility for terrorism risks to the economy on the NEC after 9/11. She was the Deputy Head of Global Strategy at UBS and the Chief Currency Strategist for Bankers Trust. She headed the Global Investment Management business for Bankers Trust in Asia.
Dr Malmgren has been a visiting lecturer at Tsinghua University in Beijing and an occasional lecturer for INSEAD and the Duke Fuqua Global Executive MBA Program. In 2000 The World Economic Forum in Davos named Dr Malmgren a Global Leader for Tomorrow. She is a Governor and member of the Council of Management of the Ditchley Foundation in the UK. She is a frequent guest on the BBC, including Newsnight and the Today Program, and a guest anchor on both CNBC's Squawk Box and Bloomberg's most widely viewed programs. She has a B.A. from Mount Vernon College and a MSc. and PhD. from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
