On the face of it, it looks like any state-run oil industry. Engineers, managers and traders, all help extract, refine and distribute oil, which makes its way across Syria and Iraq as well as overseas. But this is no state-run company. This is the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant's (ISIL) lifeline - a business that provides the armed group with more revenue than any other source. Oil helps to fund its war in Syria and Iraq, as well as to provide electricity to the 10 million people living under ISIL control. But despite the oil trade being targeted by the US-led coalition against ISIL, the business continues to thrive. And many people are increasingly asking why. Russia has accused Turkey of buying oil from the armed group. Ankara in turn threw this allegation back at Moscow because of Russian support for Bashar al-Assad, who is also accused of buying oil from ISIL. And to complicate matters, ISIL oil is also being sold to other rebel groups in Syria, most of whom are opposed to ISIL but have no alternative sources of fuel. So who are the individuals and groups involved in refining and selling ISIL's oil? And where does that oil end up?

So it is clear that network bosses have a lot to consider when deciding who to put in that all important anchor chair. But when you break down the formula, is it really that complex? Usually they decide on a man and as long as he looks good in a suit, heroic in a flak jacket, and concerned at the scene of a disaster, that is pretty much the job description right there. Here is The Listening Post’s quick and handy guide, produced for us by animator Beini Huang, on how to create America's next top news anchor.

The American presidential election campaign is picking up speed. And as presidential candidate Hillary Clinton travels across the US to meet what she calls "everyday Americans", people are wondering whether Bill Clinton is helping or hurting her prospects.
So far, the former US president has remained at the sidelines, occupied with a busy schedule of his own. He is devoting time and energy to his Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative, an effort to focus the attention of international leaders on problems facing the developing world.
Ironically, he is particularly involved in the region that created more headaches than any other for his wife when she was Secretary of State: the Middle East and North Africa.
We discuss the challenges facing the Middle East, what the future holds for Africa and his wife Hillary Clinton as former US President Bill Clinton talks to Al Jazeera.

Raising its black flag over the rugged mountainous regions of Afghanistan, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has emerged as a new threat to the war-ravaged country as it battles the Taliban for supremacy.
Employing violence and brutality used by the group in Syria and Iraq, Wilayat Khorasan, (the ancient name ISIL has chosen for the region made up of Afghanistan, Pakistan and parts of neighbouring countries), has emerged in seven different areas and vowed to step up operations, where the veteran fighters, the Taliban, once held sway.
Fighting to reconstitute the historical Khorasan into the so-called 'Caliphate' of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the group says it has grand plans for the region, starting with uprooting the Taliban and the government of President Ashraf Ghani.
Causing friction with the regional and overall leadership of the Taliban, armed battles have increased over the past few months with dozens of Taliban fighters killed in the clashes, most notably in the Taliban stronghold of Nangarhar province.
ISIL's local chapter has also managed to attract dozens of fighters from the Taliban's ranks into its fold, while foreign fighters unable to make it to Syria and Iraq have thronged to the group's territory.
In ISIL and the Taliban we look at the group's growing popularity, how it made steady inroads into the country and the threat it poses for the future of Afghanistan.
We gain exclusive access to ISIL's central leadership, and meet children as young as 5-years-old being trained to fight and dedicate their lives to the 'Caliphate'.

African refugees in Israel face violence, discrimination and an uncertain future. Tensions came to a head in Tel Aviv this April with a Molotov cocktail attack on African homes and a creche. In a country where refugees are seen as 'infiltrators' and a 'cancer', Isayas is a refugee attempting to change the situation on the ground.
The asylum-seekers had been convicted on charges of illegal entry to Israel under national immigration laws. Such deportations of asylum-seekers without having their claims reviewed by the competent authorities amount to refoulement and constitute a serious violation of the 1951 Refugee Convention. Deportation of asylum-seekers and refugees to Eritrea is illegal under international law, the UNHCR believes they are likely to face persecution, torture, and execution.

US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia's death came up at an ill-tempered debate between Republican presidential hopefuls in South Carolina. The question of a replacement for Justice Scalia dominated early exchanges in Saturday's debate. The big question: Should President Obama appoint a new justice as the constitution says?
The Republican consensus: Not in an election year.
There was also a bitter exchange on the role the last Republican president played in the war in Iraq. Jeb Bush was happy to defend his brother, George Bush, from an aggressive Donald Trump, who said he lied.
Saturday's debate was by far the loudest and angriest - a sign how this contest is tightening, how important South Carolina will be, and how the stakes for the men who want to be president are getting higher.
Al Jazeera's Alan Fisher reports from Greenville, South Carolina.

It all began with the so-called Maidan revolution, and a struggle to define Ukraine's identity.
Would the country’s future lie in the West, with more integration with Europe? Or in the East, and even closer ties with Moscow?
The protests eventually forced Ukraine's pro-Russian President, Viktor Yanukovych, out of power. Then a new struggle began, one that would see Ukraine's territorial integrity torn apart.
Fighting broke out between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists. Later, self-declared republics were established in Donetsk and Luhansk.
The conflict has killed around 9,000 people, and has forced an estimated two million from their homes.

Shot, then blown to smithereens with military grade explosives, the 2006 killing of Altantuya Shaariibuu was one of Malaysia’s most sensational murder cases. Among the hundreds of thousands of refugees entering Europe a significant number is made up of young men from Afghanistan. Last year, more than 100,000 Afghans fled to Europe and the exodus continues.
But why are so many Afghans leaving their home country?
In Kabul's Kote Sangi neighbourhood, painters, carpenters, plasterers, and other manual workers sit outside waiting for someone to come by and hire them, even if only for a few hours.
This scene is replicated throughout the Afghan capital as thousands of casual workers hope to earn a dollar or more a day, the desperation etched on many faces. But their chances aren't good. These men don't have the family or the political connections often needed to get a job. And Afghanistan's unemployment rate is estimated to be at 40 percent or higher.
Afghanistan's economy still depends heavily on international aid and 61 percent of the country's operating budget is funded by foreign donors.
The withdrawal of more than 100,000 NATO troops, and a scaling down of aid has shrunk the economy drastically. Building bases for the troops, staffing them, moving food and water to them, injected billions of dollars into the economy and employed tens of thousands of Afghans for years.
In response to the economic downturn, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has launched the National Employment Programme in November 2015 to give thousands of Afghans job opportunities.
But will he succeed? How do do young Afghans feel about their country's economic future?
On this week's Talk to Al Jazeera in the Field, we examine the job market in Afghanistan. How does it really work? And what jobs, if any, offer some kind of future for the young people who decide to stay in Afghanistan?
We talk to business leaders who are looking for workers; the head of one of Afghanistan's biggest recruitment companies; and job seeker Abdel Fatah, who studied sociology at Kabul University and wants to stay and work in his country.

With the latest breakthroughs in artificial intelligence a whole new concept of food may soon radically change what we eat. And at the same time, some experts believe, it could reduce global warming.
No longer based on animal ingredients, this is a food entirely based on plants - although it looks and tastes like the classic food based on ingredients derived from animals.
This is not a new idea, it has been around for about 10 years.
But the breakthrough has been delayed, perhaps one of the reasons is that many consumers still prefer locally produced food, they want to trust the supply chain, and not simply depend on big manufacturers.
However, a group of young scientists in Chile are working on alternatives for a sustainable and meatless future.
Commercial engineer Matias Muchnick and Harvard research associate Karim Pichara are two of the founders of the Not Company. Together with biochemist Isidora Silva they are developing new plant-based food and are determined to bring it to people in their local market.
Part of what motivates them is what they consider to be the biggest drawback of classic animal farming: It requires massive amounts of land and it affects global warming.
According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, livestock contributes both directly and indirectly to climate change through the emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide.
Livestock is also a major driver of deforestation, desertification, as well as the release of carbon from cultivated soils. Overall the livestock sector is contributing 2.7 billion tonnes of CO2 emission according to the UN.
"When you get behind the scenes of the food industry, you don't like what you see. There is a lot of things that we should be knowing... but we are blindsided by a whole industry that is making it really hard for us to see what we are really eating," says Matias Muchnick.
The main scientist of the Not Company team is a computer, an artificial intelligence algorithm programmed to become the smartest food scientist in the world.
It uses deep learning parameters to understand food at a molecular level, helping the team to deliver tasty and affordable nutrition while using less water, less land, less energy, and without the need to cultivate harmful bio systems like animals.
It's a complicated process but it's designed to understand human perception of taste and texture which allows it to suggest clever recipes for sustainable and tasty plant-based foods. And it even understands the availability and use of resources for every single plant in the company's database.
"We want people to eat better, but without even knowing, that's the main objective of the Not Company," Muchnick says.
But does the new model of food production really work? Will it be popular among consumers? What does it mean for the future of food? Are we at the tipping point of a food revolution?
The team behind the Not Company talks to Al Jazeera to discuss their work, their goals and their vision for the future of the food industry.

Amid low oil prices and burgeoning budget deficits, Saudi Arabia annonced it was considering listing the state-owned oil giant Aramco on the Saudi stock exchange.
Aramco is the world's largest company in the oil business and the backbone of the Saudi economy.
But the oil business is not creating enough cash these days. Even with the low oil price, the numbers associated with Aramco highlight why this could be such a significant initial public offer.
Saudi Aramco has crude reserves of about 260bn barrels of oil, which is more than 15 percent of the world's proven oil reserves. If it went public, it could become the first listed company valued at $1 trillion or more, analysts estimate.
Saudi Arabia's $98 billion budget deficit is seen by many analysts as the main reason for the listing, but Saudi officials inists it is part of an attempt to diversify the economy beyond oil and have the private sector play a biger role.
So, will auctioning off a slice of Aramco give Saudi Arabia more time to weather the oil price storm? And how can the Saudi economy deal with the low oil price?
We speak to Fahad Alturki, the chief economist of Jadwa Investment, about oil, Aramco and a trillion-dollar IPO we thought would never happen.
Also on this episode of Counting the Cost: We take a look at South Africa's weakening rand and why the jittery currency is posing huge questions about the government's economic direction and putting financial pressure on everyday South Africans.
We also look at Wanda, a group that has just bought a major stake in the Hollywood studio behind Batman and Godzilla. It is owned by China's richest person, Wang Jianlin, and is fast becoming a media powerhouse. So what will be China's role in the global entertainment industry?

Asadullah was only 10-years-old when he was arrested and imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay.
While working as a tea-boy for an Afghan commander, he, along with 30 other Afghans were rounded up by US soldiers and sent to the notorious military site in Cuba.
Branded a 'terrorist' he was held for 17 months before finally being released.
Al Jazeera's Sonia Verma was the first journalist to find Asadullah after he was freed, travelling to his remote mountain village to interview him.
What she discovered was a young boy who had been victimised by the US, abandoned by his country, yet nostalgic for his brief and unusual taste of the West.
Ten years later, Sonia returns to Afghanistan to find the 22-year-old. This is no simple task. As her friend Graeme Smith put it, "You only had a name. A first name, which is like looking for a guy called John in New York City."
But when Sonia finally does find Asadullah, she discovers a young man trying to rebuild his life after a lost childhood.

Switzerland is proud of being a democracy, of being internationally neutral and of not having been involved in conflict since a civil war in 1848. But is still has the second largest armed force per head of population in the world. Why?
Military service is mandatory with almost all eligible males trained as soldiers and women also serving as volunteers: "For me, joining the army was patriotic decision," says Sergeant Laetitia Geiser. "I'm intrigued when it comes to serving my country."
Military training camps are a common across Switzerland, as are civilians carrying shotguns over their shoulders.
Behind only the US and Yemen in the number of guns per capita; there are around 29 guns for every 100 people. And in a country of only 8 million people, that means at least one in four households has a gun.
The pro-military culture has made target shooting a popular national sport, even amongst children. "I inherited my passion for shooting from my parents," says nine-year old Luca.
Despite the strong gun culture, there are rarely more than forty gun homicides a year, compared with the US - with its 30,000 gun murders a year and 31 every day.
Nonetheless, a fresh debate over gun control has been rekindled in Switzerland.
Sandro Cattacin from Geneva University doesn't believe keeping arms at home creates greater security; and anti-gun lobbyist Amanda Gavilanes launched a campaign five years ago with the slogan "for a better protection from armed violence."
But with guns so engrained in Swiss culture and the crime statistics so relatively low, is it a debate that will ever lead anywhere?

Hundreds of thousands of refugees are making their way to Europe.
Although this number is smaller than the millions pouring into Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan, it is a crisis dividing Europe.
Many Europeans are uneasy and concerned about what they feel is a lack of control and wonder who is coming and whether their societies can cope.
So what are the refugees seeking in Europe? And what do they have to say to Europeans who do not want them to come to their countries?
