The following video shows as the Ethiopian Federal Police, known as Agazi and part of the elite force of the ruling Tigrean People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), shooting at Haromaya University’s Oromo students – who were out protesting against the Addis Ababa Master Plan in late November 2015. The students were protesting against the Addis Ababa Master Plan, whose goal, they say, is to expand the City of Addis Ababa by many folds by evicting Oromo farmers from their land around the City of Addis Ababa in Oromiyaa. The Oromo people, especially students, have been expressing their protests against the Addis Ababa Master Plan, ever since it was unveiled by TPLF officials in April 2014. As a result of the Oromiyaa-wide protests against the Addis Ababa Master Plan, over the last year and half, more than a hundred Oromos were killed by the Agazi force, including the four who had been reported dead at the recent Haromaya protest.
The students, pronounced dead and those protesting, come from all sections and all zones of Oromiyaa for their higher education at Haromaya University.

This video contains an unapologetic interview Prof. Habtamu Dugo conducted with Virgil Boyd, a 2014 African Studies Association's meeting local organizing committee member and part of African Studies Program in Indianapolis, for African American Community Media. Prof. Dugo introduces the Oromo people of Oromia and East Africa to the African American community in Indianapolis, Indiana, during the 2014 ASA conference and emphasizes the need for building bilateral relations between the Oromo and African American communities. He explains and clarifies how the Oromo are rendered invisible among African Americans by false Ethiopianist narratives that deny their existence or distort their identity. Prof. Dugo also explains the tensions between the so-called "Ethiopian" communities and African Americans in some cities like Washington DC in the United States because of condescending and prejudiced attitudes from the former toward the latter. Those with negative attitudes toward African Americans are not everyone from Ethiopia, but a privileged segment of the elites from the north (aka. Abyssinians) who somehow feel superior to other Black peoples and African Americans. The Oromo are not part of northern groups and they rightly claim being the origin of mankind and the quintessential Africans and Blacks at same time.

who am I? & I will let my teacher answer. Who are the Oromo people?
The Oromo people are near and dear to my heart. I learned about them first-hand when I taught social studies for English Language Learners at Minneapolis South High School. Most of my ELL students were newly arrived refugees from Ethiopia. But many bristled at being called "Ethiopians." They identified themselves as Oromos, and their homeland was Oromia—the largest of nine federal states in Ethiopia.
The Oromos are the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia, and there are Oromos in northern Kenya and parts of Somalia as well. Oromos speak Oromiffa, or Afan Oromo, a Cushitic language that shares approximately 35% of its vocabulary with Somali. Approximately 47% of Oromos are Muslim, and a similar percentage are Christian. As a civics teacher, I was fascinated to learn that the Oromo people had a sophisticated traditional system of democratic governance called the Gadaa system.
The Oromo people have long faced persecution from the Ethiopian Government and in Ethiopian society. In fact, one of the reasons I decided to leave teaching and become a human rights lawyer was to try to play a role in stemming the systematic human rights abuses that had driven my refugee students away from their homelands.

Brief translation
Introduction:
Before joining the Oromo liberation struggle, I was in the EPRDF army. Before that I was a college student.
What motivated me to join the Oromo Liberation Army is the current situation Oromo people find ourselves in.
When I was a student there were all kinds of pressure put on us by the authorities. Whenever we would raise any issues regarding our rights, regarding Oromo rights and such, we were treated like criminals and accused of supporting the OLF. They would constantly harass and arrest us. And this continued until I was expelled from college.
When I was expelled, gov't spies were sent to my hometown to alert the local authorities about me to keep me under surveillance. Because of that I stayed in Finfinne (Addis Ababa), working and surviving. I later moved to Gambella for work.
Some instability and tribal conflicts arose there and I returned to my family. But before I could see them I was arrested. Without any questioning, and without informing me about why I was arrested, I was held for about 5 and a half months at a prison in Dembi Dollo.
Upon being released:
I was not able to find work and make a living, and I was in a difficult situation. So I decided to join the EPRDF army. There I graduated from the military academy with distinguished honours but we faced issues with inequality. Tigrayan cadets with only 6th or 7th grade education were sent to the Airforce academy, while we were sent to the front lines on the Ethio-Eritrea border. This was in 2007. When we went to the frontlines, they took all our belongings and documents, and kept us in a camp. Our camp was watched from the front and from behind by commando units. While their [Tigrayan] recruits are sent to Finfinne and other urban areas to do their skill related work within the army, we were sent to the frontlines in Afar.
On one occasion our commanders told us to pay 30 birr for an Ayelom T-shirt. I asked them why we were paying this money for this t-shirt when millions are starving. Meanwhile you use our resources to build statues. The issue of the people is not statues, its about food. You already have statues of this man in Tigrai why are we required to pay tribute to him. For raising this question I was labeled as an OLF sympathizer and removed from the camp and sent to the 31st regiment. They sent me there to keep me under watch. Officially I was sent there to teach, but in reality I was under surveillance. In the end they couldn't find what they were looking for, so they fabricated charges against me. That is when I escaped and joined the OLF.
Since joining the Oromo Liberation Army, I have experienced true happiness working for my people. It feels as if I have been born again.

On Ethiopia, UN Had No Response to ICP on Oromo, Answers Banned
By Matthew Russell Lee
UNITED NATIONS, January 13 -- Despite the UN having offices in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, it has had nothing to say about the crackdown that has led to the killing, reportedly, of over 140 people. Inner City Press on January 11 asked UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon' spokesman Stephane Dujarric about this - but Dujarric gave no answer. Video here.
Now that Ethiopian authorities say they are canceling the underlying Oroma plan, the UN still has no comment. Inner City Press on the morning of January 13 asked Dujarric and two other UN spokespeople the following: “On “Ethiopia's government is set to abandon plans to expand the boundaries of the capital, Addis Ababa, which have caused months of deadly protests,” please now provide UN comment - and explain why transcript of Jan 11 noon briefing, where ICP asked about Oromo deaths, has not been online: http://www.un.org/press/en/content/noon-briefings.”
Four hours later and counting, there was no answer, and the transcript was still not online. This is today's UN.
The UN report on rapes in the Central African Republic, released on December 17, found that UN Peacekeeping's Under Secretary General Herve Ladsous “illustrate[s] the UN's failure to respond to allegations of serious human rights violations in the meaningful way.”
Ladsous has yet to take any questions about the report. Now the Office of the UN Spokesperson refuses Press questions on reports that "peacekeepers" from Burundi, France, Gabon and Morocco paid fifty cents for sex with children in CAR. On the morning of January 12, Inner City Press asked three separate UN spokespeople, in writing:
"In light of the Jan 11-12 Washington Post report that “ in interviews, U.N. officials said the peacekeepers were from Gabon, Morocco, Burundi and France. The prostitution ring they allegedly used was run by boys and young men who offered up girls 'for anywhere from 50 cents to three dollars,' according to one official,” please state the current status of these 'peacekeepers' from Morocco, Gabon, France and Burundi - and the status of the waiver USG Ladsous gave to the Burundian contingent."
By the morning of January 13, no answer, nothing, nor to a separate Inner City Press question about Burundi nor to this:
Inner City Press: RE “Filming for fictional television show at UNHQ, 13 January 2016 - Please be advised that filming for a fictional television show will take place on UN premises, as well as along 1st Avenue, on Wednesday, 13 January 2016” - please state what the TV show is, or explain why won't say.
Neither was this answers, on the fantasy of accountability at the UN.
On January 5, Ladsous' mission in CAR issued a press release about yet more allegation of sexual abuse of minors by its peacekeepers, below.
Back on January 5, Inner City Press asked the Permanent Representative of New Zealand and of Uruguay, President of the Security Council for January, about the report(s). Video here.
Now on January 11-12, the Washington Post reports on CAR "peacekeepers" from Burundi, France, Gabon and Morocco paying between fifty cents and three dollars for sex with children as young as 13 years old. But for some reason the Washington Post does not mention the BOSS of UN Peacekeeping, Herve Ladsous. Why not?
Babacar Gaye is mentioned, as well as his replacement; Anthony Banbury is quoted, and even Ban Ki-moon, from a canned speech. But Ladsous is not mentioned, despite the section about him in the report released December 17. The UN cannot reform itself.
Ambassador Gerard van Bohemen of New Zealand expressed concern. Ambassador Rosselli of Uruguay said in his national capacity that allegations should be dealt with has his country had, apparently a reference to Haiti. It appears the Security Council will take up this matter.
Earlier at the January 5 UN noon briefing, Inner City Press asked UN Spokesman Stephane Dujarric if now Ladsous, in the Security Council right then on CAR, would belatedly answer questions, since the firing / scapegoating of former mission chief Babacar Gaye clearly didn't end the rapes. From the transcript:
I wanted to ask but CAR, since you have this new report. One, I guess I’d like to… since Mr. [Hervé] Ladsous is briefing the Security Council today about CAR and has yet to answer any questions on the CAR sexual abuse allegations report… I guess it’s a timely request… can he do a stakeout, take questions on it? Because it seems like Babacar Gaye was fired, but the problems go on. So this is a request. It seems like a reasonable one
But as noted (and Vined, here), Ladsous did not answer.

UNITED NATIONS, January 18 -- Despite the UN having offices in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, it had nothing to say about the crackdown that has led to the killing, reportedly, of over 140 Oromo people, when Inner City Press on January 11 asked UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon' spokesman Stephane Dujarric. Video here.
On January 18, Inner City Press asked Dujarric's deputy Farhan Haq, video:
Inner City Press: on Friday I'd asked Stéphane [Dujarric] about this protest outside by Oromo people. And he'd said… he had something, I guess, he read, saying the UN hopes for dialogue. But, in hearing more about it, it seems… there were 140 people killed, according to Human Rights Watch, and there are many people still detained from those protests, and there's been an attempt to close down communications from some of the areas that were subject to the protests. Since the UN has this office in Addis, is there anything… do you have anything beyond asking for dialogue, is there any request that those detained be released, that there be an investigation of the deaths or a stopping of what people call censorship there?
Deputy Spokesman Haq: Well, what I have to say is simply that the Secretary-General calls on the Government of Ethiopia and protesters to engage in a constructive dialogue to address the issues at hand, and the Secretary-General continues to stress the importance of respect for peaceful protest and freedom of assembly. Have a good afternoon, everyone.
On January 15, there was a large Oromo demonstration across First Avenue from the UN. Inner City Press broadcast it live on Periscope, with interviews, putting it on YouTube, here.
Then Inner City Press went in and asked UN Spokesman Dujarric, video here, transcript here:
Inner City Press: it seems inevitable to ask you. There's a big protest in front of the building by Oromo people saying that more than 140 of them have been killed by Ethiopia. So I'd asked you about it on Monday. You said you don't have anything but you'd check. What does the UN know given that it has an office in Addis about these killings?
Spokesman Dujarric: On the protests, we're obviously very much aware of the protests not only going on outside but in Ethiopia itself. I think the Secretary-General would call on the Government and the groups concerned to hold a constructive and peaceful dialogue and also to ensure that all those who want to protest are able to express themselves freely and free of harassment as it is their right.
Inner City Press: You just announced an Ethiopian general heading UNISFA-
Spokesman Dujarric: soldiers from any nationality, as you know, for serving in DPKO, in peacekeeping missions, they go through a screening policy to ensure that the individuals and the units themselves are free of any human rights violations.
We'll have more on this. For now, note that the UNSC's upcoming trip, from which Inner City Press was Banned, goes through Addis Ababa. Will anything be said about Oromo?
The prostitution ring they allegedly used was run by boys and young men who offered up girls 'for anywhere from 50 cents to three dollars,' according to one official,” please state the current status of these 'peacekeepers' from Morocco, Gabon, France and Burundi - and the status of the waiver USG Ladsous gave to the Burundian contingent.

Oromo is the most widely spoken Cushitic language in East Africa and the entire world, it's an East Cushitic language of what is for now classified as the subbranch of Cushitic's "Lowland East" branch alongside languages such as Somali, Saho and Afar.
This video was originally created to aid in spreading stories about Jesus or generally about the Christian faith for proselytizing purposes. I do not own the actual video or any of its content nor did I take any part in its production. I'm merely sharing this for "educational" purposes; for anyone interested in hearing what various Cushitic languages sound like.
Oromo is seemingly capable of being divided into various sublanguages. For example:
Ethnologue (2013) divides Oromo into five languages:
* Borana–Arsi–Guji Oromo (Southern Oromo, incl. Gabra and Sakuye dialects)
* Eastern Oromo (Harar)
* Orma (Munyo, Orma, Waata/Sanye)
* West–Central Oromo (Western Oromo and Central Oromo, incl. Mecha/Wollega, Raya, Wello, Tulema/Shewa)
* Waata (Sanye)"
Roger Blench (2006), a linguist, divides Oromo into four languages:
* Western Oromo (Maca)
* Shewa (Tuulama, Arsi)
* Eastern Oromo (Harar)
* Southern Oromo (Ajuran, Borana, Gabra, Garreh, Munyo, Orma, Sakuye, Waata)
These recordings were originally compiled by: http://globalrecordings.net/en/
And they seemed to list the videos in ways like:
Oromo: Harar People
Oromo: Jimma People
I couldn't entirely be sure about the correct way to designate these languages as I myself am not some expert on Oromo so I just divided it the way you see in the video in a way that assumes for example that "Oromo: Jimma" is how people in and around the town/ city of Jimma speak Oromo. If any Oromo speakers have anything to add like mentioning if one of these variants of Oromo is a dialect or a sublanguage then go ahead. F.e. I assume what global recordings lists as "Oromo: Harar People" is essentially what Ethnologue and Blench classify as "Eastern Oromo"?
An interesting piece on the Oromo people from my blog:

Ethiopia is one of the ancient civilizations in the world, like its vast civilization, its internal problems are also complex. Among the major chronic problems is the case of the Oromo, people who has migrated to the highlands of the country from somewhere around Somalia. As the Oromos are assimilated for the last 4 centuries, it has reached to a reality that its existence comes in to question other than the Oromifa language. Is there Oromo race in Ethiopia today? More than 65% of the Oromo speaking people are Moslems; is it the Oromo that is Islamized or vise-versa?

Many non Oromos in so called Oromiya in Ethiopia, are forced to assimilate to be Oromos. People of Gafat, Enariya, Damot and Bizamo who were invades and occupied by the Oromo tribes in the 16,17th centuries are assimilated to the Oromo invaders called Mecha and Tulema. The territories of these ancient people are renamed as Wellega, Illubabur, Jimma, Ambo and so and so. These people, though they speak Affan Oromo, they have to be given the chance to search for their own identities and their respective languages of their forefathers. Yet they have never been allowed. That is what is called Fascism in the name of democracy.
