Do you know what a 'silent syllable' is? It's actually one of the topics you have to master in order to sound more like a native English speaker. In this video, you'll learn what syllables are, which words have silent ones, and how to correctly pronounce some common words with silent syllables. You'll also learn to count syllables, so you know how many syllables are in a word. Practice these words by taking our quiz at the end of the video, and start speaking English more naturally today.

TRANSCRIPT
Hello. My name is Emma, and in today's video, I am going to teach you about some pronunciation mistakes that you're probably making. So, if you look beside me, I have a bunch of words. These are some of the most commonly mispronounced words in English by English... By students who are learning English. So today, I'm going to teach you how we actually pronounce these words.
So, the title of this video is "Silent Syllables". All of these words have a silent syllable in them. Now, you may be wondering: "What is a syllable?" Well, a syllable is usually a vowel sound, sometimes it can also be a consonant-vowel sound. So, if that's a little bit confusing, let's look at some examples.
Here is the word "cat". It has one syllable. If I clap my hand, "cat". Okay? Now, compare this to the word "student", which has two syllables. Compare this to the word "beautiful", which has three, and we have here the word "incredible" which has four. Okay? So each of these has a different number of syllables. You'll also notice that the length of the word is different. "Incredible" is longer than "beautiful", "beautiful" is longer than "student", and "student" is longer than "cat". Okay?
So, a silent syllable is a syllable that people believe we're supposed to pronounce, but we don't actually pronounce it. Let's start with this one, because this is the most common mistake I hear in my classrooms. Many students pronounce this word as "com-for-ta-ble", they believe it has four syllables. This is not true. I want you to listen carefully to how I pronounce this word: "comfterble", "comfortable". How many syllables did you hear? "Comfortable". If you said three syllables, you are correct. So we do not pronounce "com-for-ta-ble", mm-mm, we say: "comfterble". Okay? So if I wrote this how it's almost pronounced, it almost looks like: "comfterble". Okay?
The next word that I hear a lot of students making a mistake with... This is one of my favourite types of food, I hear a lot of students say: "choc-o-late", where they pronounce this "o". In English, we don't pronounce that. We usually say... So we don't say "choc-o-late", which is three syllables; we actually say: "choclate", "chocolate", "chocolate". How many syllables does that have? If you said two, you are correct. It's almost like this "o" doesn't exist. So I want you to repeat after me: "chocolate", "comfortable". Okay, good.
Now, the next sound, or... The next word many students mispronounce is this one. First off, they often miss... Mispronounce the "v" sound, which is "veg", "vegetable". Many students say: "veg-e-ta-ble". Okay? So many students think it has four... Four syllables, but in fact, it doesn't. Tell me: How many sounds does this have: "vegetable", "vegetable"? It has three. Okay?
So I'm actually going to start writing this. "Comfortable" has two, "chocolate" has two. "Comfortable"... Sorry, "comfortable" has three. Okay? "Vegetable" has three.
The next word is another word a lot of students make a mistake with, similar to "chocolate", we have here an "o". We don't pronounce this "o". Okay? So many students say "brocc-o-li", but we don't say "broccoli", we say: "broccli". Okay? So, in this case, it only has two syllables: "brocc-li". Okay? And we will go over these one more time at the end of the video.
Okay, very common word here, how many syllables do you think it has? If you said: "in-trest-ing", you are correct, it has three syllables. Many students say: "in-ter-est-ing". "That is very interesting." We don't say it like that. We say: "in-trest-ing". Okay? "In-trest-ing", so this one has three syllables also.
Okay, another very common word... Okay, I've used the Canadian/British spelling. If you're an American or an... A speaker of American English, there will be no "u" here. How many syllables do you think this word has? Okay? Let's say it together: "Favourite", "favourite". How many did you hear? If you said: "fav-rite", and you heard two syllables, you are correct. We do not say: "fav-our-ite", mm-mm, we say: "fav-rite". Okay?
Okay, here's another one a lot of students make mistakes with, many students will say: "temp-er-a-ture", but we don't say it this way. I want you to listen carefully, and choose: How many syllables are there in this word? "Tem-pra-ture", "temperature". "Tem-pra-ture". Okay, so there are three syllables in this one.

Hello. This is Gill at www.engvid.com, and today, we're going to be having a look at a very interesting aspect of the English language: What happens with some words if you stress a different syllable. Okay? This is quite important, because sometimes the change of stress just changes a noun to a verb, or a verb to a noun, but there are some other words which we will also be looking at where the meaning of the word completely changes if you change which syllable you're stressing. Okay. So this is quite important to be clear on which syllable to stress for the particular meaning that you want. Okay.
So, we're going to start with the easier part, which is a two-syllable word, so two syllables: "mm-mm, mm-mm", two syllables where if you stress it on the first syllable where I've put capital letters, it's the noun; and if you stress it on the second syllable, again, capital letters, it becomes the verb. The general meaning is the same with this group of words, but you're changing from noun to verb when you're changing the stress. Okay? So it's important to know whether you're saying a noun or a verb. So remember it's always the first stress syllable is the noun, second syllable stressed is the verb.
Okay, so let's have a look at the example, here. So, a "RE-cord", if you keep a record of something or if you play a record that has music on it in the days when we used to have black plastic records that went round and round on a gramophone or a record player. A "record" is something recorded, or if you write down in a document, you make a note of something, you make a... You keep a record of something that happened, or something that was agreed. Maybe in a meeting somebody keeps a note of the discussion of the meeting, and then they print it out and send it to everyone who was at the meeting as a record of that meeting, what was discussed, what was agreed, and so on. So, the "record", that's the noun: "the record", "a record" is the noun. But if you then change the stress and say: "re-CORD", that becomes the verb. We are going to record a song. So if you're making a CD, now, rather than a black plastic record that goes around, a CD, we are going to record the new song that we've written. Or at the meeting, we will record the agreement. So, that is the verb, the action of recording. If you say: "recording", "recording", it's the "cord" bit that you stress. But a record is the thing itself, the noun. Okay. And you'll also notice the vowel sound changes slightly, because you're changing the stress. So: "record", "eh", the "eh" sound, but "record", "a", it becomes an "a" sound, here. "RE-cord", "re-CORD", so sometimes with the change of stress, the vowel sound changes, too. Okay.
Right, next one: "SUS-pect" and "sus-PECT". Right? So, "suspect", if someone is a suspect, they are usually, maybe the police think that they committed a crime. We have caught the suspect. We are questioning a suspect of someone who maybe stole something from a shop, and then somebody identifies them later, and that is a suspect. So that's the noun, the person, usually, is a suspect. If you suspect someone, if you do the action of suspecting, the police suspect this person of having committed that crime. So, we suspect, if you do the action of suspecting. So: "SUS-pect" is the noun, "sus-PECT" is the verb, the action of having suspicion about somebody. Okay.
"IM-port" and "im-PORT". An import or the import is some product that is imported from one country to another. We have imports. The goods themselves, the products, which arrive by plane, or ship, that's the import. Okay? The thing itself. But the action is we import these goods on a daily basis. We are importing the goods. So the action is import. All right?

Learn to use the International Phonetic Alphabet to help you pronounce other languages. In this third lesson I discuss the basic parts of syllables and the kinds of syllables found in different languages.
Slashes // enclose IPA transcriptions in this video. (We'll learn about brackets [] next time.) Slashes signal that the text inside represents transcribed pronunciation instead of "regular" written language.
V stands for any vowel and C for consonants in a syllable: V (vowel), CV (consonant-vowel), CCVC, etc.
Syllables have a nucleus (usually V), an onset before the nucleus (C, CC, etc.) and a coda after the nucleus (C, CC, etc.).
A low dot (period) can be used to separate syllables in IPA: /sɪ.lə.bəlz/ 'syllables'.
Diphthongs are formed when multiple vowels share the nucleus: /hait/ 'height'.
A double mark follows a long vowel: /iːz/ 'ease'.
Syllabic consonants (including /l/, /r/, /m/, /n/) sit at the nucleus of a syllable instead of a vowel: /sɪ.lə.blz/ 'syllables'. They're often written with a small line below.

Every headset I review either get's better or comes with a cool new feature. This is to look as if it was a necklace on you, so you can use use this as a fashion sense. The sound is actually loud where at full volume it is too much to listen at that level while keeping its quality without audio crackle, oh and the bass is really good, not the best but it for sure packs a punch to low level frequencies. The cord right now is stiff and still creased from the storage box so it doesn't lay straight yet, if even. The magnets to clamp it around your neck is really cool too, they feel strong enough to run around without having them get undone, they also house the charging micro usb port neatly hidden on the magnet oval connection part. The volume and power control have a good click feedback where you can feel what you are doing, and the control also has it's built in microphone for you to make hands free voice calls or video chats.
It definitely has its cool factor to it, some may think it's more for woman, but I think it a total unisex thing that I even would use just fine. I can not report right now how long the battery will last in real life, you can surely find it in the link of the item sold, but I will report later to see how much I got out of it. Thank you for watching and I'll see you next time!
