Taglines: Based on a true story. He thought that magic only existed in books, and then he met her.
Quotes:
Jack: Why love, if losing hurts so much? I have no answers anymore: only the life I have lived. Twice in that life I've been given the choice: as a boy and as a man. The boy chose safety, the man chooses suffering. The pain now is part of the happiness then. That's the deal.
Joy: Jack, don't you sometimes just bust to share the joke? Here's your friends thinking we're unmarried and up to all sorts of wickedness, when all along we're married and up to nothing at all.
Joy: Back where I come from, there's this quaint old custom. When a guy makes up his mind to marry a girl, he asks her. It's called proposing. Did I miss it?
Harry: Christopher can scoff, Jack, but I know how hard you've been praying; and now God is answering your prayers.::C. S. Lewis: That's not why I pray, Harry. I pray because I can't help myself. I pray because I'm helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time, waking and sleeping. It doesn't change God, it changes me.
Joy Gresham: We can't have the happiness of yesterday without the pain of today. That's the deal.
C. S. Lewis: Pain is God's megaphone to rouse a deaf world.
C.S. Lewis: He comes; he sleeps; he goes. So the plot thickens.
Joy Gresham: Are you TRYING to be offensive, or merely stupid?
[mourning Joy's passing]::Douglas Gresham: [sobbing] I sure would like to see her again.::C. S. Lewis: [also sobbing] Me too.
Jack: Will you marry this foolish, frightened old man... who needs you more than he can bear to say... who loves you, even though he hardly knows how?

While staying with Clive and his shallow wife, Anne, Maurice finally discovers romance in the arms of Alec, the gamekeeper. Written from personal pain, it's E.M. Forster's story of coming to terms with sexuality in the Edwardian age.

Quotes:
Archie: Oh, cheer up, old man! What's gotten into you?::Maurice Hall: Would you believe - it's my birthday.
Maurice Hall: England for me!
Lasker-Jones: England has always been disinclined to accept human nature.
Maurice Hall: I'm an unspeakable of the Oscar Wilde sort.
Clive Durham: Maurice, I hope nothing is wrong?::Maurice Hall: Pretty well everything. You would think so.::Clive Durham: Very well, I'm at your service. My advice there is to sleep here tonight and ask Anne. Where a woman is in question, it's always better to ask another woman.::Maurice Hall: I'm not here to see Anne. [pauses] I'm in love with Alec Scudder.::Clive Durham: What a grotesque announcement.::Maurice Hall: [ironically] Most grotesque. But I felt I should tell you.::Clive Durham: Maurice, Maurice, we did everything we could when you and I clashed out the subject.::Maurice Hall: When you brought yourself to kiss my hand.::Clive Durham: Don't allude to that! Come in here. [lowers his voice] I am more sorry for you than I can possibly say and I do, do beg you to resist to return on this obsession.::Maurice Hall: I don't need advice. I'm flesh and blood Clive, if you'll condescend to such low things. I've shared with Alec.::Clive Durham: Shared what?::Maurice Hall: Everything. Alec slept with me in the Russet Room when you and Anne were away.::Clive Durham: [turns away from him] Oh God.::Maurice Hall: Also in town.::Clive Durham: The sole excuse for a relationship between two men is that it remains purely platonic. Surely you agree to that.::Maurice Hall: I don't know. I've come to tell you what I did.::Clive Durham: Well, Alec Scudder is in point of fact no longer in my service. In fact, he is no longer in England. He sailed for Buenos Aires this very day.::Maurice Hall: He didn't. He sacrificed his career for my sake. Without a guarantee. I don't know if that's platonic or not but it's what he did.::Clive Durham: missed his boat? Maurice, you're going mad! May I ask if you intend...::Maurice Hall: [interrupts him] No, you may not ask. I told you everything up to this minute, not a word beyond.
Lasker-Jones: You should not resist me. You're resisting me.::Maurice Hall: Damnit, I'm not!
Alec Scudder: Was you calling for me, Sir? I know, Sir. It's all right. I know, Sir.
Alec Scudder: Tomorrow's Thursday. Friday's packing. Saturday's Southampton, so it's goodbye, Old England.::Maurice Hall: You mean that you and I shan't meet again after now?::Alec Scudder: That's right, you've got it quite correct.::Maurice Hall: Stay with me.::Alec Scudder: Stay? Miss my boat? You daft? Of all the bloody rubbish. Order me about again, you would.::Maurice Hall: It's a chance in a thousand we met. You know it. Why don't you stay?::Alec Scudder: Stay? With you? How? And where? With your Ma? Oh yeah. What would she say if she saw me? All rough and ugly the way I am. My people wouldn't take to you one bit. I don't blame them, either. And how would you run your job, I'd like to know?::Maurice Hall: I shall chuck it.::Alec Scudder: Your job in the City? What gives you money and position? You talk like a man who's never had to earn his living.::Maurice Hall: You can do anything. Once you know what it is. We can live without money, without people. We can live without position. We're not fools. We're both strong. There'd be some place we could go.::Alec Scudder: Wouldn't work, Maurice. Be the ruin of [pauses; gestures with both hands towards crotch or balls] *us both*. Can't you see?
Alec Scudder: Now, we shan't never be parted. It's finished.
Maurice Hall: Alec, did you dream you had a friend? Someone to last your whole life?

Taglines: This is the story of two men who run...not to run...but to prove something to the world. They will sacrifice anything to achieve their goals...Except their honor. With Wings on their Heels and Hope in their Hearts Two men chasing dreams of glory!
Quotes:
Eric Liddell: You came to see a race today. To see someone win. It happened to be me. But I want you to do more than just watch a race. I want you to take part in it. I want to compare faith to running in a race. It's hard. It requires concentration of will, energy of soul. You experience elation when the winner breaks the tape - especially if you've got a bet on it. But how long does that last? You go home. Maybe you're dinner's burnt. Maybe you haven't got a job. So who am I to say, "Believe, have faith," in the face of life's realities? I would like to give you something more permanent, but I can only point the way. I have no formula for winning the race. Everyone runs in her own way, or his own way. And where does the power come from, to see the race to its end? From within. Jesus said, "Behold, the Kingdom of God is within you. If with all your hearts, you truly seek me, you shall ever surely find me." If you commit yourself to the love of Christ, then that is how you run a straight race.
Eric Liddell: I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel His pleasure.
Harold M. Abrahams: If I can't win, I won't run!::Sybil Gordon: If you don't run, you can't win.
Sam Mussabini: Eric Liddell? He's no real problem...::Harold M. Abrahams: [Eric has already beaten Harold once] You could have fooled me.::Sam Mussabini: Yeah, he's fast! But he won't go any faster. He's a gut runner, digs deep! But a short sprint is run on nerves. It's tailor-made for neurotics.
Sam Mussabini: Do you want to know why you lost today?::[Harold nods]::Sam Mussabini: You're over striding. [Sets coins in a row] Now these coins represent the steps in your sprint. [Pushes coins together] Can you find me another two coins, Mr. Abraham? [Harold looks up] Remember, over striding. Death for the sprinter [shakes his head]. Knocks you back. [Slaps Harold across the cheek. Harold winces] Like that! [Slaps Harold again] And that! [Sam laughs and grabs Harold by the arm].
Harold M. Abrahams: That was the miscalculation of my life.
Harold M. Abrahams: You, Aubrey, are my most complete man.::Harold M. Abrahams: You're brave, compassionate, kind: a content man. That is your secret, contentment; I am 24 and I've never know it.::Harold M. Abrahams: I'm forever in pursuit and I don't even know what I am chasing.
Henry Stallard: [the athletes are playing cricket in the ballroom of their hotel. Henry Stallard is the umpire; Aubrey Montague bowls a delivery to Eric Liddell, batting] No ball!::Harold M. Abrahams: [desperate to get into bat] Come on, Aubrey, the old leg-break!::Harold M. Abrahams: [Aubrey bowls another delivery, which deceivingly appears to have gotten Eric out] HowZAT!::Henry Stallard: Not out!::Harold M. Abrahams: What do you mean, not out? You could've heard it from bloody Bournemouth! Come on, Liddell, my innings.::Eric Liddell: I didn't touch it, I swear it, must've been the crack of my wrist!::Harold M. Abrahams: He's out I tell you, you're all deaf - deaf and bloody blind! Aubrey I ask you, for God's sake!::Harold M. Abrahams: [No response from Aubrey, dramatic pause] [punching the air] It's not FAIR! [the athletes break into laughter, Abrahams eventually joining them]
Harold M. Abrahams: And now in one hour's time I will be out there again.::Harold M. Abrahams: I will raise my eyes and look down that corridor; 4 feet wide, with 10 lonely seconds to justify my whole existence. But WILL I?
Harold M. Abrahams: Aubrey, I've known the fear of losing but now I am almost too frightened to win.

Plot: Paddy O'Riley and Ossie Merrill, Bellport high school football heroes, enroll in distant colleges; Paddy at a small school in the East, where he is barely a substitute, and Ossie at a powerhouse-football school, where he is an instant star and all-American candidate. They leave behind Cheers Reynolds, who is fond of Paddy, who works in her family's drugstore, but she loves Ossie almost as much as he loves himself. Paddy makes friends with team fullback Dutch Schultz, who accompanies him on vacation, and they arrive back in Bellport just as Ossie is also coming home on break. Florence Taylor is also in town on a film junket. Unknown to any of the others, Paddy and Florence had gone to high school together. Back at school and three years later, Paddy and Dutch learn that their football team could get invited to the coveted Rose Bowl to play against Ossie's team, if it could get enough publicity (pre-BCS days) that would attract a large crowd. They are soon up to their hip-pads in publicity when the newspapers learn that Paddy is in love with Cheers, who is in love with Ossie, who is in love with Florence, who loves Schultz. The Eastern team gets invited. Cheers, on an innocent mission, is discovered in Paddy's room the night before the game by Coach Soapy Moreland, who suspends Paddy from the team and orders him to turn in his uniform which, based on the unrealities that this film portrays as college football (even in the 1930's), he probably had hanging on a hook in his hotel room closet.

She is also a Councilor for Undergraduate Research Program Division of the Council on Undergraduate Research. Her talk discusses some of the advances that the OSCAR program has made at Mason. She also discusses how students who participate in undergraduate research, including herself, are much more prepared compared to their peers.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

This class extended the discussion of everything that can wrong in the real world. Lenders, left unprotected, will be exploited. Information can be noisy and markets can be irrational. Social costs can be large. Relating back to class, I have a couple of items on the agenda and neither requires extensive reading or research. I would like you to think about market efficiency without any preconceptions. You may believe that markets are short term, volatile and over react, but I would like you to consider the basis of these beliefs. Is it because you have anecdotal evidence or because you have been told it is so or is it based upon something more concrete? i also want to think about how managers in publicly traded companies can position themselves best to consider the public good, without being charitable with other people's money. We have spent a couple of sessions being negative - managers are craven, markets are noisy and bondholders get ripped off. We closed by looking at what we should be doing in this very imperfect world in terms of choices.

Step 3(2) (UGRAD):
Workshop: “Undergraduate Study: Essay Writing”

Session 3 (Undergraduate): Corporate Governance
In this class, we started to look at the what can wrong with the Utopian world that allows us to focus on stock price maximization. In particular, we examined how the mechanisms that shareholders use to keep managers in line, the annual meeting and the board of directors, are flawed. We closed with the general question of looking at how much power stockholders have to create change in corporations

This short lecture explores some of the research findings from cognitive psychology that could have an impact on educational practices. In the first part of the lecture, we complete part of a classic study (Bransford & Johnson, 1972) looking what factors might help us remember. The results of this study indicated that having meaningful personal experiences before learning about something new helps us remember that something new much better than without those experiences. Further, those experiences need to be relevant for the information that we are about to remember. As a result of this work, Schwartz & Bransford (1998) recommended that there is 'a time for telling' meaning that lectures are only useful when they come after meaningful and relevant experiences. In the second part of the lecture we talked about a recent review paper by Dunlosky et al. (2013) that looked at a large number of different types of experiments in different learning contexts to evaluate whether certain types of revision techniques are useful. They report that some very popular techniques do not actually help with learning. We concluded the lecture with a discussion of these techniques.

In this class, we started to look at the what can wrong with the Utopian world that allows us to focus on stock price maximization. In particular, we examined how the mechanisms that shareholders use to keep managers in line, the annual meeting and the board of directors, are flawed. We closed with the general question of looking at how much power stockholders have to create change in corporations.
