Introduction to Political Philosophy (PLSC 114)
This is an introduction to the political views of Thomas Hobbes, which are often deemed paradoxical. On the one hand, Hobbes is a stern defender of political absolutism. The Hobbesian doctrine of sovereignty dictates complete monopoly of power within a given territory and over all institutions of civilian or ecclesiastical authority. On the other hand, Hobbes insists on the fundamental equality of human beings. He maintains that the state is a contract between individuals, that the sovereign owes his authority to the will of those he governs and is obliged to protect the interests of the governed by assuring civil peace and security. These ideas have been interpreted by some as indicative of liberal opposition to absolutism.

Hobbes' most famous metaphor, that of "the state of nature," is explained. It can be understood as the condition of human life in the absence of authority or anyone to impose rules, laws, and order. The concept of the individual is also discussed on Hobbesian terms, according to which the fundamental characteristics of the human beings are the capacity to exercise will and the ability to choose. Hobbes, as a moralist, concludes that the laws of nature, or "precepts of reason," forbid us from doing anything destructive in life.

A sovereign state is a nonphysical juridical entity of the international legal system that is represented by one centralized government that has supreme independent authority over a geographic area. International law defines sovereign states as having a permanent population, defined territory, one government, and the capacity to enter into relations with other sovereign states. It is also normally understood to be a state which is neither dependent on nor subject to any other power or state. The existence or disappearance of a state is a question of fact. While according to the declarative theory of state recognition a sovereign state can exist without being recognised by other sovereign states, unrecognised states will often find it hard to exercise full treaty-making powers and engage in diplomatic relations with other sovereign states.

The world community does not regard the Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan as a sovereign state. A March 18, 2008 District Court Decision in Washington DC found that the native Taiwanese people are essentially stateless, and indeed the three letter codes established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), to represent countries, territories, etc. do not contain an "ROC" entry.
Native Taiwanese people, who trace their ancestry in Taiwan back 400 years or more, are increasingly disturbed by their stateless condition, and claim that such a status is in direct violation of Article 15 (1) of the Universal Human Rights Declaration. That Article says that everyone has the right to a nationality. The ROC passport issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs identifies the bearer as "Chinese," but such an identification is clearly wrong. Under the One China Policy recognized by the United Nations, all international bodies, and over 90% of the world's sovereign states, "China" and "Chinese" are designations for the People's Republic of China, and the citizens thereof. The ROC on Taiwan is not "China," it is merely a Chinese government in exile.
Because of the above factors, native Taiwanese people feel that they are most properly identified as "Taiwanese," and not "Chinese." The question then arises: Should native Taiwanese people who want to travel internationally be able to apply for travel documents issued by a sovereign state?
Indeed, this seems a reasonable request. But, which country should bear the responsibility for issuing travel documents to native Taiwanese people, and clarifying that they are Taiwanese and not Chinese? This video presents a collection of excerpts from U.S. State Dept. publications which offer many important insights.
In summary, this is a video which every person interested in the USA - PRC - Taiwan triangular relationship should watch, as well as recommend to their friends, associates, teachers, professors, debating club members, and representatives in Congress.

A sovereign state (or simply state) is classically defined as a state with a defined territory on which it exercises internal and external sovereignty, a permanent population, a government, and the capacity to enter into relations with other sovereign states. It is also normally understood to be a state which is neither dependent on nor subject to any other power or state. The existence or disappearance of a state is a question of fact. While according to the declaratory theory of state recognition a sovereign state can exist without being recognised by other sovereign states, unrecognised states will often find it hard to exercise full treaty-making powers and engage in diplomatic relations with other sovereign states.
The word "country" is often colloquially used to refer to sovereign states, although it means, originally, only a geographic region, and subsequently its meaning became extended to the sovereign polity which controls the geographic region.
Sovereignty is a term that is frequently misused. Up until the 19th century, the radicalised concept of a "standard of civilisation" was routinely deployed to determine that certain peoples in the world were "uncivilised", and lacking organised societies. That position was reflected and constituted in the notion that their "sovereignty" was either completely lacking, or at least of an inferior character when compared to that of "civilised" people." Lassa Oppenheim said "There exists perhaps no conception the meaning of which is more controversial than that of sovereignty. It is an indisputable fact that this conception, from the moment when it was introduced into political science until the present day, has never had a meaning which was universally agreed upon." In the opinion of Justice Evatt of the High Court of Australia "sovereignty is neither a question of fact, nor a question of law, but a question that does not arise at all."

Hobbes' most famous metaphor, that of "the state of nature," is explained. It can be understood as the condition of human life in the absence of authority or anyone to impose rules, laws, and order. The concept of the individual is also discussed on Hobbesian terms, according to which the fundamental characteristics of the human beings are the capacity to exercise will and the ability to choose. Hobbes, as a moralist, concludes that the laws of nature, or "precepts of reason," forbid us from doing anything destructive in life.

It is also normally understood to be a state which is neither dependent on nor subject to any other power or state. The existence or disappearance of a state is a question of fact. While according to the declarative theory of state recognition a sovereign state can exist without being recognised by other sovereign states, unrecognised states will often find it hard to exercise full treaty-making powers and engage in diplomatic relations with other sovereign states.

A March 18, 2008 District Court Decision in Washington DC found that the native Taiwanese people are essentially stateless, and indeed the three letter codes established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), to represent countries, territories, etc. do not contain an "ROC" entry.
Native Taiwanese people, who trace their ancestry in Taiwan back 400 years or more, are increasingly disturbed by their stateless condition, and claim that such a status is in direct violation of Article 15 (1) of the Universal Human Rights Declaration. That Article says that everyone has the right to a nationality. The ROC passport issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs identifies the bearer as "Chinese," but such an identification is clearly wrong. Under the One China Policy recognized by the United Nations, all international bodies, and over 90% of the world's sovereign states, "China" and "Chinese" are designations for the People's Republic of China, and the citizens thereof. The ROC on Taiwan is not "China," it is merely a Chinese government in exile.
Because of the above factors, native Taiwanese people feel that they are most properly identified as "Taiwanese," and not "Chinese." The question then arises: Should native Taiwanese people who want to travel internationally be able to apply for travel documents issued by a sovereign state?
Indeed, this seems a reasonable request. But, which country should bear the responsibility for issuing travel documents to native Taiwanese people, and clarifying that they are Taiwanese and not Chinese? This video presents a collection of excerpts from U.S. State Dept. publications which offer many important insights.
In summary, this is a video which every person interested in the USA - PRC - Taiwan triangular relationship should watch, as well as recommend to their friends, associates, teachers, professors, debating club members, and representatives in Congress.

North Korea has told the United Nations that its development of space－related technology is its legitimate right as a sovereign state.
The defiant statement comes as concerns linger the North could be gearing up for a long－range rocket launch.
Han Da－eun has the details.
″The development of space－related technology for peaceful purposes is a legitimate right of a sovereign state. Our nuclear tests are self－defensive measures to cope with the hostile policy and nuclear threat posed by the United States.″
That was the main message North Korea sent to world leaders at the UN General Assembly on Thursday， local time.
Making it clear that North Korea will forge ahead with its space and nuclear development，... the foreign minister reiterated that Pyongyang is determined to protect its dignity by firmly responding to unjust acts against it.
Ri also mentioned that there are more than ten nations worldwide that send satellites into space... but the UN Security Council has ″illegally″ passed a resolution that forbids North Korea doing the same.
He also said the current armistice agreement should be replaced with a peace treaty，... and the U.S. should play a role in the process.
″We strongly believe the best way to secure peace and security on the Korean Peninsula is to replace the armistice agreement with a peace treaty. This would redress the abnormal relations between North Korea and the UN.″
The minister′s speech comes as speculation rises that North Korea will launch a rocket around October 10th to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of its Workers′ Party.
However，... a growing number of experts say a launch would likely happen after the 10th as no significant activity has been spotted at the North′s launch site.
Experts say it will take North Korea at least ten days to prepare for a launch.

The world community does not regard the Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan as a sovereign state. Court decisions in the USA have found that the native Taiwanese people are essentially stateless, and indeed the three letter codes established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) do not contain an "ROC" entry.
Native Taiwanese people, who have been in Taiwan hundreds of years, are increasingly disturbed by their stateless condition, and claim that such a status is in direct violation of the Universal Human Rights Declaration.
Because of the above factors, native Taiwanese people feel that they should be identified as "Taiwanese," and not "Chinese." The question then arises: Should native Taiwanese people who want to travel internationally be able to apply for travel documents issued by a sovereign state?
Indeed, this seems a reasonable request. But, which country should bear the responsibility for issuing travel documents to native Taiwanese people, and clarifying that they are Taiwanese and not Chinese? This video clarifies the answer.
