In which John Green examines the French Revolution, and gets into how and why it differed from the American Revolution. Was it the serial authoritarian regimes? The guillotine? The Reign of Terror? All of this and more contributed to the French Revolution not being quite as revolutionary as it could have been. France endured multiple constitutions, the heads of heads of state literally rolled, and then they ended up with a megalomaniacal little emperor by the name of Napoleon. But how did all of this change the world, and how did it lead to other, more successful revolutions around the world? Watch this video and find out. Spoiler alert: Marie Antoinette never said, "Let them eat cake." Sorry.

The French Revolution Tearing up History BBC full Documentary 2014
A journey through the dramatic and destructive years of the French Revolution, telling its history in a way not seen before - through the extraordinary story of its art. Our guide through this turbulent decade is the constantly surprising Dr Richard Clay, an art historian who has spent his life decoding the symbols of power and authority.
Dr Clay has always been fascinated by vandalism and iconoclasm, and believes much of the untold story of the French Revolution can be discovered through the stories of great moments of destruction. Who were the stone masons in the crowd outside Notre Dame that pulled down the statues of kings? Why do the churches of Paris still carry all the coded signs of anti-Christian state legislation? What does it mean, and who was carrying this out?
Telling the story of the French Revolution - from the Storming of the Bastille to the rise of Napoleon - as the significant modern outbreak of iconoclasm, Clay argues that it reveals the destructive and constructive roles of iconoclasts and how this led directly to the birth of the modern Europe.

This is part of a four-video series designed to see whether we can make genuinely educational videos--the kind of videos that could actually help people learn the big and important things they have to learn in school. Nerdfighters gave us permission to make the videos longer than four minutes, so....no punishment. Let us know how we're doing.

Designed by the amazing Karen Kavett: http://www.youtube.com/xperpetualmotion
In which John discusses the causes of the French Revolution and its initial events, including the French debt crisis under King Louis XVI, the convocation of the estates general, the rise of the third estate, the formation of the National Assembly, the tennis court oath at Versailles, the storming of the Bastille, the women's march, and the moving of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette to Paris.
This is part of a four-video series designed to see whether we can make genuinely educational videos--the kind of videos that could actually help people learn the big and important things they have to learn in school. Nerdfighters gave us permission to make the videos longer than four minutes, so....no punishment. Let us know how we're doing.

French Revolution, also called Revolution of 1789, Louis XVI: execution by guillotine [Credit: Album/Prism/Album/SuperStock]the revolutionary movement that shook France between 1787 and 1799 and reached its first climax there in 1789. Hence the conventional term "Revolution of 1789," denoting the end of the ancien régime in France and serving also to distinguish that event from the later French revolutions of 1830 and 1848.
Although historians disagree on the causes of the Revolution, the following reasons are commonly adduced: (1) the increasingly prosperous elite of wealthy commoners—merchants, manufacturers, and professionals, often called the bourgeoisie—produced by the 18th century's economic growth resented its exclusion from political power and positions of honour; (2) the peasants were acutely aware of their situation and were less and less willing to support the anachronistic and burdensome feudal system; (3) the philosophes, who advocated social and political reform, had been read more widely in France than anywhere else; (4) French participation in the American Revolution had driven the government to the brink of bankruptcy; and (5) crop failures in much of the country in 1788, coming on top of a long period of economic difficulties, made the population particularly restless. ... Restaurant critic Giles Coren and writer and comedian Sue Perkins experience the food culture of years gone by.
Giles and Sue go for a journey back to Revolutionary France in the 1780s. Donning wigs and corsets, Giles and Sue find out what King Louis XVI ate, why Marie Antoinette was so hated, and how the Revolution was instrumental in creating the first restaurant and first restaurant critic.
French chef Mickael Weiss from London's Coq d'Argent sweats it out in the kitchens providing the lavish banquets in some of the most beautiful chateaus in France.
During the week, they sample frog's legs, a masked meal, an iced sculpture of the Bastille complete with fireworks and Marie Antoinette's soup before she was taken to the guillotine. Sue tries cake at Versailles while Giles has a banquet consisting entirely of a new vegetable called the potato.
Following in the footsteps of the king and queen, Giles and Sue escape from Paris in a horse-drawn carriage and end the week with a meal consisting entirely of black food and with a live pig as the guest of honour. The French Revolution in a week is truly a supersized undertaking.

http://www.tomrichey.net/euro
This is the first part of my lecture series on the French Revolution, providing an introduction to the background and the causes of the chain of events that led to the Revolution.
Before the French Revolution, France operated under the Old (Ancien) Regime in which the people were organized into three Estates: the First (Clergy), the Second (Nobility), and the Third (Everyone Else). The clergy and the nobility had several privileges, including exemption from paying taxes. The extravagant spending of the French monarchy combined with its inability to tax the first two estates created a financial crisis in the late 18th century. France's decision to assist the United States in the American Revolution pushed the French monarchy's finances to the breaking point, prompting King Louis XVI to call an "Assembly of Notables" in 1787 to investigate options for raising more revenue. The Assembly of Notables ended in failure, with the clergy and the nobility refusing to consent to taxation. Louis was left with no choice but to call the Estates General, where I will continue in the second lecture.
This lecture is intended for AP European History and Western Civilization students, but is appropriate for high school audiences and lifelong learners, as well.

European Civilization, 1648-1945 (HIST 202)
Robespierre's ascetic personal life and severe philosophy of political engagement are attributed by some to his difficult childhood. As a revolutionary, one of his most significant insights was that the Revolution was threatened not only by France's military adversaries abroad, but also by domestic counter-revolutionaries. Under this latter heading were gathered two major groups, urban mercantilists and rural peasants. Relative strength of religious commitment is the major factor in explaining why some regions of France rose up in defense of the monarchy while others supported the Revolution.
