So while it will continue to rain in Amsterdam, under the bridge it will at least be (sort of) dry.. This week we again have events most of the evenings. Tomorrow (Tuesday) we will of course have a VOKU again, so pass by after 19:00 for some (vegan) food. If you want to help cooking in the future, let us know!
On Wednesday a documentary with presentation and food will be shown about the 43 students that were ‘disappeared’ by Mexican police forces last year will be shown. It’s called Ayotzinapa Chronicle of a State Crime and the door is open at 19:00:https://www.facebook.com/events/458905997628828/

Saturday afternoon from 14:00 we invite everyone to come and help with cleaning, fixing and constructing things in our space. We can definitely use all hands, so don’t be shy! This week we have a busy program again with tomorrow evening our first voku (food-night). We plan to do this every Tuesday evening from now on, so if people want to help cooking in the future, let us know!
Wednesday we will have another Spinema again. This time Serial Mom (1994) will be shown, a hilarious about the perfect housewife- a woman so obsessed with suburban perfection that she kills a neighbor for not separating her recyclables.

Furthermore, we are planning to make a poster for the November program. So if people want to organize events in November, please let us know as soon as possible, so we’re still able to include it on the poster.
And finally, since the opening two weeks ago we have been open on every week-day after 12:30. People can drop by to have a chat, read a book and to drink a cup of coffee or tea. We do desperately need more volunteers for the bar-shifts though, especially during the day, so if you’re interested in helping out once in a while, please send an email to hetspinhuis@gmail.com or talk to the person behind the bar inside!

MARQUIS (1989)

This amazing French film from the late 80s caused quite a stir when it was released, but like so many other films it has been largely deleted from film history and is never screened anymore. It is loosely based on the writings of the notorious Marquis de Sade, as visualized by the powerful imagination of Roland Topor.” He was was of Polish descent and was one of the principle surrealists in France in the 50s, and was a partner with Jodorowsky in the panic movement. Today he remains one of the most important graphic illustrators of the last century. He also was a writer, and Roman Polanski made an important film from one of his books called The Tenant.
This film takes place during the Marquis de Sade’s imprisonment in Paris, with the French Revolution as its background. The storytelling of Sade’s life is mixed with his imagination and fantasy. Strangely the film is a heavy mix of intellectualism about the nature of sexuality and revolution, but it is also filled with outrageously perverse sex scenes.
The movie is made in a totally unique and bizarre way… with animatronics (real people in costumes with faces which are animated), but also sometimes clay animation is employed. All the characters in this film are anthropomorphised animals, walking upright and played by human actors/dancers in elaborate costumes and masks. Thus, for example, Justine is a white mare, dressed in a dominatrix costume. The Marquis de Sade is a dog, and he has a huge penis which has an animated human face on it. This is where the intellectual part comes in, since The Marquis has philosophical arguments with his own cock.
There is certainly no other film like this one… and it will be a rare screening of course!
Aanstaande dinsdagavond organiseren wij een discussie-avond over Recht Op Stad in het Spinhuis over gentrificatie. Dit naar aanleiding van de 1 oktober demonstratie op de Dam donderdagavond die wij met het Spinhuis ondersteunen.
Gentrificatie (Engels: gentrification) is in het kort het opwaarderen van een stad en/of wijk. Sloop, nieuwbouw, grote ontwikkelingsprojecten en stijgende huren drijven de oorspronkelijke bewoners hun huizen uit naar de buitenste ringen van de stad. De daklozen worden uit het straatbeeld verwijderd, bureau toezicht doet zijn intrede, de graffiti wordt verwijderd en ondertussen komen ondernemers en de nieuwe rijkere lagen van de samenleving – de ‘gentry’, oftewel goedverdienende young urban professionals: ‘de yuppen’.
Amsterdam verandert snel. In hoog tempo wordt de voorraad sociale woningbouw afgebroken en wonen binnen de ring wordt steeds minder betaalbaar. De goedkope groenteboer verdwijnt en in de plaats komt een dure koffie-tent met moccachino-latte. Is gentrificatie onvermijdelijk? Wat is de rol van de woningcorporaties en het gemeentebeleid? En wat kunnen we leren van de Amsterdamse geschiedenis van sociale woningbouw, buurtverzet en woonstrijd?

FEAR EATS THE SOUL 1974

Ali – Fear Eats the Soul is a bitter tale by Rainer Werner Fassbinder over racism and immigration in Germany. An older woman happens into an Arab bar to escape the rain one day. This is post-1972 Munich, where the bombing of the Olympic games by Islamic terrorists is still fresh in peoples minds. But this woman is Emmi, who married a Polish worker years ago despite her own family’s prejudices and warnings. She raised 3 children with him before he died of an ulcer. In the bar she meets Ali, a gastarbeiter from Morocco. Now she’s ready to love again. This is how the film begins, and I don’t want to say anything more about the plot.
Despite what it might sound like from what I have written above, this is no simple tale of racism. Fassbinder himself had a Moroccan lover at the time he made this film and he knew all the subtleties and hidden contradictions in the situation. This film takes several unexpected turns, only to reveal the real motives underneath the surface. In our modern Western society, just because everyone happens to be polite to you, it doesn’t mean that their motives are necessarily pure or good, or that they even actually like you. In a different situation they might act very differently. Fassbinder was constantly aware of this fact, and he was always thoughtful in how he revealed ulterior motives…
In this film Fassbinder delivers his typically sharp jabs at a hypocritical society…and does so with beauty and a twist of dark humor. Fassbinder’s films have fallen from grace in the last few years and they definitely deserve to be shown again the cinemas… especially since many of the issues he addressed have never been solved and are still bitterly relevant.
This will be a high-definition screening.

THE DEVILS (1971)

This is Ken Russell’s infamous film which was banned in very many countries and heavily censored in the countries where it was shown. Back in the 70s, this film was banned from Italy and its stars Vanessa Redgrave and Oliver Reed were threatened with three years of jail-time if they set foot in that country. It’s a true story based on the documentation in Aldous Huxley’s bookThe Devils of Loudun.
Set in the 17th Century, the priest Father Grandier leads the congregation of the church in the city of Loudun, France. He was reported to be an extremely handsome man, and soon the women at the nunnery start having wild sexual dreams at night involving Father Grandier. The conclusion? That Father Grandier is the devil and that he is trying to possess them. The political landscape is set under the French court of Cardinal Richelieu, and a witch-hunter is sent to the city to exorcise the priest.
A film about sexual hysteria and political intrigue, which is stunningly photographed and brilliantly acted. It’s amazing that such big actors agreed to star in such an over-the-top, transgressive film… but it’s wonderful that they did, because it lends an elegance to the proceedings which is totally unique. Everyone thinks that things are so democratic and free these days….when we are actually living under very heavy censorship. Wanna see something made 40 years ago which would never be allowed to be made by a major studio today? Pure cinematic dynamite.

Studenten kraken ruimte onder Singel brug voor nieuw academisch café
Gistermiddag hebben de studenten van het Spinhuis Collectief de ruimte onder de ´Torensluis´ brug aan de Singel gekraakt. Dit is de breedste brug van de binnenstad en de plek waar boven vroeger de Jan Roodenpoortstoren stond. In deze ruimte willen de studenten binnenkort een nieuw academisch café te openen.
Een jaar geleden werd de voormalige common room van het Spinhuis gekraakt door de studenten. In dit leegstaande UvA gebouw werd toentertijd vier maanden lang activiteiten georganiseerd voor en door de academische gemeenschap. Nadat zij gedwongen werd tot het verlaten van de ruimte op last van een rechtsuitspraak was het een tijdje stil rond het Collectief. Nu met deze nieuwe ruimte hopen zij weer door te gaan met het organiseren van culturele activiteiten zoals discussie- en debatavonden, theater, kunst en muziek.
Het collectief hekelt het verdwijnen van betaalbare plekken en ondergrondse cultuur in de binnenstad. De Amsterdamse binnenstad verandert langzaam maar zeker in een aangeharkt museum enkel voor toeristen en de rijke elite. Verder benadrukken ze het belang van autonome ruimte waar studenten zonder toestemming van bovenaf zichzelf kunnen organiseren en ontplooien. “Veel mensen hebben het niet zo breed,” zegt Hadrian, “bij studenten is het zelfs het stereotype. Heet water en een zakje thee voor twee euro is gewoon niet voor iedereen betaalbaar en draagt bij aan elitevorming in het onderwijs.”
De Torensluis heeft een rijke geschiedenis. De brug dateert uit 1648 en is daarmee de oudste brug die in zijn originele staat bewaard is gebleven. Het was ooit een gevangenis voor piraten die belasting ontdoken en later een afluisterkantoor ten tijde van de koude oorlog. Enige tijd geleden deed het dienst als jazzclub. De afgelopen jaren heeft de ruimte echter leeg gestaan. Het pand heeft een UNESCO status gekregen door werk van de Vereniging Vrienden de Amsterdamse Binnenstad, het collectief hoopt op een goede samenwerking met deze vereniging en zal later vandaag in een open brief zijn standpunt over de monumentale status verder toelichten.
“Met het vorige Spinhuis stonden we aan de vooravond van een jaar lang acties en demonstraties, dit jaar hopen we dat nog eens dunnetjes over te doen. We nodigen iedereen uit die kritiek heeft op het totalitaire UvA-bestuur om langs te komen!” aldus studentenraadslid Ruud van der Veen.
