UkeFoote "Slow Boat to China" by Frank Loesser
For Season of the Ukulele 175, it’s “all about the Boats”. Here’s one of my favorites. I like to play this for my 94 year old uncle, who was a member of the Asiatic fleet (look that one up Tommy) in China in the late thirties and early forties. Needless to say, my uncle is a very remarkable man. I played this at the end of a rather long day, after waking up camping in eastern Oregon, and drivin

This fascinating travelogue was made in 1934, in the era when China was in the grip of the Imperial nations. America operated its own fleet of warships in Chinese waters, to protect American interests, especially the tankers belonging to Standard Oil. Shown in the film are various U.S. Navy warships and gunboats, and although none are identified by name the USS Augusta (CA-31), flagship for the Asiatic fleet, is clearly visible. Canton and Shanghai are cities visited during the course of the film, and the shores of the Whangpoo River. The sailors of the Asiatic Fleet, who by Navy standards lived easy lives (many routine tasks were performed by live-aboard Chinese), are seen in the film enjoying many sights, including Race Day.
Cities shown include Hong Kong, Canton, and Shangai.
The United States Asiatic Fleet was a fleet of the United States Navy during much of the first half of the 20th century. Preceding the World War II era, until 1942, the fleet protected the Philippine Islands. Much of the fleet was destroyed by February of that year, after which it was dissolved and incorporated into the naval component of the Southwest Pacific Area command, which eventually became the 7th Fleet.
The fleet was created when its predecessor, the Asiatic Squadron, was upgraded to fleet status in 1902. In early 1907, the fleet was downgraded and became the First Squadron of the United States Pacific Fleet. However, on 28 January 1910, the ships of that squadron were again organized as the Asiatic Fleet. Thus constituted, the Asiatic Fleet, based in the Philippine Islands, was organizationally independent of the Pacific Fleet, which was based on the United States West Coast until it moved to Pearl Harbor in the Territory of Hawaii in 1940.
Although much smaller than any other U.S. Navy fleet and indeed far smaller than what any navy generally considers to be a fleet, the Asiatic Fleet from 1916 was commanded by one of only four four-star admirals authorized in the U.S. Navy at the time. This reflected the prestige of the position of Asiatic Fleet commander-in-chief, who generally was more powerful and influential with regard to the affairs of the United States in China than was the American minister, or later United States Ambassador, to China.

FREMANTLE's SECRET FLEET
Fremantle, Sub Base Western Australia WW II
Before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the US Navy's Asiatic Submarine Fleet (29 submarines) had been based in Manila in the Philippines along with 3 cruisers, 14 destroyers and a number of smaller vessels.
When the war started the Japanese bombed the Navy Base at Cavite quite extensively. The submarines were operating near the Philippines at that time. Captain John Wilkes who had been Commander SubsAsiatic Force was due to return to the States prior to the start of the war with Japan. Admiral Thomas C. Hart, the Commanding Officer of the Asiatic Fleet told Wilkes he was staying.
Captain Wilkes was given command of the six "S" type and some other Fleet type submarines and told to use facilities at Soerabaja in Java.
Captain John Fife was ordered to proceed to Darwin to establish a new Submarine Headquarters and a repair base where the submarine Tender USS Holland (AS3) would be based.
It was soon realised that Darwin, with its high tides, was unsuitable for submarine operations and was too open and hence could be easily mined. USS Holland (AS3) was then relocated to Tjilaljap in Java, which also proved unsuitable.
All three locations were often bombed by the Japanese. Java was then eventually taken by the Japanese leaving the Asiatic Submarine Force without a base. Exmouth Gulf in Western Australia was also considered for a while as a likely contender for a new Submarine Base. The sub fleet sank only three merchant ships during December 1941. USS Sealion (SS195) was sunk by the Japs while it was moored at the wharf in Cavite Navy Yard. They only sank another 3 Japanese ships in January 1942 and Submarine S-36 was lost in the Makassar Straits. Admiral Hart requested to be relieved of his duties.
Finally on the 3 March 1942, the USS Holland (AS3) arrived in Fremantle to establish the new Fremantle Submarine Base as home for 8 submarines of the Asiatic Fleet. The officers of the submarine command started to arrive in Fremantle and finally started to form a united command. Captain Wilkes ordered that two large wheat loading sheds on the wharf be leased. They were each 800 feet long and 50 feet high making them very suitable for their submarine workshop space. The area was also serviced by a railway line which was ideal for their operation.
They also established an Auxiliary Submarine Base at Albany further south on the Western Australian coast.

I played this at the end of a rather long day, after waking up camping in eastern Oregon, and driving (a long way) home. Before recording I may have had a tankard or two of grog as well, which may account for the Foghorn Leghorn phrasing toward the end there, and also the misbegotten descending major scale coda which turned mixolydian, perhaps in honor of the drunken sailor.

'"The Aggressors," a giant training aid of the United States Army, was formed after World War II at Fort Riley, Kansas. Their job: to create as realistic a maneuver enemy as possible so that combat training will approach the feeling of actual combat. In the first half of this most unusual THE BIG PICTURE, audiences discover the Aggressor Amy, Member Circle Trigon Party, have liberated large areas of the continental United States, but because of their success, THE BIG PICTURE viewers have been kept from the facts. This is a short documentary showing the liberation of the United States to date. After setting the pace for this program in the first 15 minutes, the camera examines closely this gigantic training aid of the Army. It is explained that at the close of World War II, a board of 100 combat-experienced American generals was formed to recommend training policies for the future. Out of these recommendations came the Aggressor concept of a maneuver enemy. The general mission of the Aggressor Army was threefold: First, to provide a realistic enemy for maneuver training; second, to provide realistic situations for intelligence training; third, to make sure that all American soldiers are aware that any future enemy will look and act differently from what they are accustomed to.'

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_exercise
A military exercise or war game is the employment of military resources in training for military operations, either exploring the effects of warfare or testing strategies without actual combat. This also serves the purpose of ensuring the combat readiness of garrisoned or deployable forces prior to deployment from home base / home station.
Exercises in the 20th and 21st centuries have often been identified by a unique codename in the same manner as military contingency operations and combat operations...
Field exercise
The more typically thought of exercise is the field exercise, or the full-scale rehearsal of military maneuvers as practice for warfare. Historical names for field exercises in the military services of the British Commonwealth include "schemes," while those of the military services United States are known as Field Training Exercises (FTX), or, in the case of naval forces, Fleet Exercises (FLEETEX). In a field exercise or fleet exercise, the two sides in the simulated battle are typically called "red" and "blue", to avoid naming a particular adversary. In U.S. and NATO exercises, this naming convention dates from the Cold War construct where the principal geo-political adversaries of the U.S. and NATO of the period, specifically the Soviet Union, the People's Republic of China and their various proxy states were viewed as "red" forces based on their national flags and the association of communism with the color red, whereas friendly forces were depicted by the color blue.
Command Post Exercise
A Command Post Exercise (CPX) typically focuses on the battle readiness of staffs such as a particular Unified Combatant Command or one of its components at any level. It may run in parallel with an FTX or its equivalent, or as a stand-alone event for headquarters staff only with heavy emphasis on simulated events...

The family of Gery Hudson Porter, 92, has invited the Patriot Guard to attend the services of their Hero, it would be our honor to do so.
Gery served in the U.S. Navy from November 7, 1940 until December 3, 1946. He served an additional two years in the reserve for a total of 8 years. In June of 1941, Gery was a shipmate aboard the USS West Virginia (BB-48), a Colorado-class battleship. Six months later, at 0800 on December 7, 1941, Gery was aboard the USS West Virginia at Pearl Harbor, HI when it and other ships were attacked by Japanese aircraft. After the ship was sunk, Gery spent the day fighting fires on board. Following the attack, he served on the USS San Francisco.
In July 1942 he was assigned to the USS Bogue in Bremerton, WA. Following Atlantic convoy and antisubmarine patrol duty, he was reassigned in July 1943 to the USS Langley in Philadelphia, PA. The Langley joined and operated with the Pacific Fleet(s) from early January 1944 until April 1955 when it returned to San Francisco for repairs. Gery was discharged in December 1946 and had obtained the rank of Chief Machinist's Mate. His awards include the American Defense w/star, Asiatic-Pacific w/10 stars, American Area, European-African w/star, WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Navy Unit Citation, Presidential Unit Citation w/star and Philippine Liberation w/2 stars.
After serving, he worked and retired after 28 years from the Port of Long Beach as a Civil Engineer and Deputy Chief Harbor Engineer. His hobbies were wood craft, photography, traveling and enjoying the symphony. Gary became an active member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and served as national secretary and treasurer for the Association.
Gery is survived by his fiance, one daughter and one granddaughter.
