Rosetta and Philae
The European Space Agency says it's time to say goodbye to comet probe 'Philae'. In a first for space exploration, Philae was dropped onto the surface of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on November 12, 2014 after a 10-year, 6.5-billion-kilometre journey through space piggybacking on mothership Rosetta, which is now orbiting the comet. Philae made eight intermittent contacts via Rosetta, only to fa

Philae’s landing on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (#CometLanding) on 12 November 2014 was a historic moment – the first time in the history of space exploration that a spacecraft landed on a comet. Millions of people across the world followed the Rosetta mission via the Internet.
The DLR Video ‘Pieces of the Puzzle – Philae on Comet 67P’ provides an insight into the ‘roller coaster ride’ on the day of the #CometLanding: “We had to make decisions, develop concepts, alter schedules, sleep briefly and return – and then do the whole thing again and again. There was not a moment to breathe.” In the video, Koen Geurts, Philae’s Technical Manager, looks at the days immediately after the landing and the following seven months of waiting for a renewed sign of life from Philae. The ‘crazy year’ was to continue, as on 14 June 2015, the comet lander once again reported back. However, the connections thus far have been irregular and unstable. And so, all those involved in the Rosetta mission must examine the pieces of the puzzle together to decipher what is happening 266 million kilometres from Earth.

On 30 July, the first papers covering the scientific results obtained by Philae on the surface of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko were published in Science magazine. On that occasion, we released a number of images taken by Philae on 12 November 2014, including a sequence of seven taken by the ROLIS downward-looking camera towards the end of the descent to the lander's first touchdown point at Agilkia, previously known as Site J. (As is now well-known, Philae rebounded after briefly touching down at Agilkia, eventually coming to rest at a site called Abydos.)
To mark the first anniversary of the selection of Site J as the target for Philae, we are releasing a “special edition” version of that ROLIS image sequence. The seven still images, each spaced by 10 seconds, have been interpolated in time to create a movie that shows Philae's descent between 67 metres and just 9 metres above the surface in real time, taking just under 1 minute. The movie ends at that point, as there are no further images in the sequence: Philae had touched down at Agilkia before another 10 seconds had passed.
Having worked with Jakub Knapik, visual effects supervisor at Platige Image, Warsaw on our short sci-fi film, "Ambition", we were delighted when he took those seven ROLIS images and used state-of-the-art visual effects tools to interpolate between the images to create this movie sequence. The soundtrack for this sequence, an instrumental version of “Saline” from the 2008 album, “Experiments in Mass Appeal”, has been provided by Jem Godfrey of Frost*.

Continual data from the orbiter, together with information collected over several days from the lander, is providing a comprehensive picture of a remnant from our Solar System.
This film covers the most recent science news from the Rosetta mission, as well as selected scientific highlights from the last year. It includes the comet’s unusual surface terrace structure, its formation from two colliding objects producing the unusual rubber duck shape, how water is transported from inside the comet towards the surface, and the surprising detection of molecular oxygen - familiar on Earth but not on a comet.

The Philae comet lander has woken up after 7 months. In November it was taken to the 67P comet by the Rosetta spacecraft ... and then lost contact with Earth. The spacecraft that took the lander there travelled for 10 years through the stars to reach the celestial body 500 million miles away. The landing was the first controlled landing on a comet ever. However, due to a major international rescue operation, its temples and numerous buildings were relocated to the island of Gelkia. The great Isis Temple Of Philae is acknowledged as one of the most well preserved Egyptian holy places dating from Ptolemaic times and some of its foundations are believed to derive from far older religious buildings. Next to the smaller Hathor Temple, fourteen magnificent columns and capitals rise majestically into the sky. The ‘Nilometer’ was reassembled on Gelkia. This device was the official measurement system for Egyptian taxes. Thus, the level of taxes was closely associated with the water level of the Nile. Egyptian life was dominated by the Nile and thus the foundation of the development of ancient Egyptian culture was due to its life-giving presence.

Philae - is an island in Lake Nasser, Egypt. It was formerly an island in the First Cataract of the Nile River and the previous site of an Ancient Egyptian temple complex in southern Egypt. The complex was dismantled and relocated to nearby Agilkia Island during a UNESCO project started because of the construction of the Aswan Dam, after the site was partly flooded by the earlier Aswan Low Dam for half a century.

Egypt is a country mainly in North Africa, with the Sinai Peninsula forming a land bridge in Western Asia. Covering an area of about 1,010,000 square kilometers (390,000 sq mi), Egypt borders the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Gaza Strip and Israel to the northeast, the Red Sea to the east, Sudan to the south and Libya to the west.
Egypt is one of the most populous countries in Africa and the Middle East. The great majority of its estimated 82 million live near the banks of the Nile River, in an area of about 40,000 square kilometers (15,000 sq mi), where the only arable agricultural land is found. The large areas of the Sahara Desert are sparsely inhabited. About half of Egypt's residents live in urban areas, with the majority spread across the densely-populated centres of greater Cairo, Alexandria and other major cities in the Nile Delta.
Egypt is famous for its ancient civilization and some of the world's most famous monuments, including the Giza pyramid complex and its Great Sphinx. The southern city of Luxor contains numerous ancient artifacts, such as the Karnak Temple and the Valley of the Kings. Egypt is widely regarded as an important political and cultural nation of the Middle East.

Travel video about destination Nile Cruise in Egypt.
A cruise on the Nile in the wake of the ancient Egyptians, an adventure into the world of the Pharaohs and the exploration of their mammoth culture. A three-kilometre avenue of sphinxes leads from Luxor to Karnak. Built during the reigns of Ramses the 2nd and Amenophis the 3rd, this impressive avenue was dedicated to three gods of Thebes. The façade of the 260 metre long temple is decorated with six huge statues of Ramses. At night, the temple complex has an air of mystique. and light casts ghostly shadows all around as fearsome monuments gaze into infinity. At its zenith, a million people inhabited Thebes. The necropolis covers 25 km² and the graves of 64 kings, queens and those in High Office have been discovered there. With the exception of Amenophis, each of the pharaohs of the new realm was buried in the necropolis, as well as the legendary, Tutanchamun. Edfu with its tower, outer walls, buildings and halls is still in almost perfect condition and at its entrance royal falcons carved from granite stand guard. Its walls are an authentic history book of Egyptian myth and legend. The Egyptian gods are everywhere as impressive statues, fragile carvings and paintings. Kom Ombo is a temple complex for two deities, Horus the Falcon and Sobek the Crocodile. The mummified holy crocodiles are stored in a special chamber. Indeed, cemeteries have been discovered that contain thousands of mummified dogs, cats, baboons and crocodiles. While walking from chamber to chamber it’s like travelling back in time for thousands of years. The journey on the Nile leads to the archaeological excavation site of Philae, on the island of Agilika. This island, with its fantastic temple complexes, was once the pearl of Egypt. The stone witnesses on the river banks stand silently as the boat continues on its journey further into Egypt, an impressive country that has an amazing ancient history and a modern awareness of its glorious past.

Pa-Irek, Philae - The Island at the End of Egypt.
5km in the south of Aswan, transported from its original place to a nearby island (in order to be saved from the rising waters of the lake formed between Aswan's two dams, the Khazzan and the Sad al Ali), Philae is by far the most exceptional place to visit.

(bis)
(bis)
(bis)

ENGLISH TRANSLATION
If you were my lover, oh my eyes,
And your love filled me, oh my eyes,
I would hope that you meet me one day.
Forget the greetings, and forget the farewell!
(bis)
To my eyes, the world will never be fine, if you are faraway!
And the world is so bright, when you console me with nice words.
(bis)
If my love loved somebody else,
and there is no place for me in his heart (lit. ''kept his heart busy''),
and if he forgot his early words,
it would be better that he told me first.
To my eyes, the world will never be good, if you are faraway!
And the world is so bright, when you console me with nice words.

What's your secret
tell me dear
I wake and I call you
Where are you my love
When you disappear I become a stranger
Stay in my heart my dear
You're drawing a new dream for me
from my fears for you
I cannot sleep
Until I hold your hands and you hold mine
When you are far I am lonely
It's like I'm lost, baby when you are far
How, tell me how can you forget me
How, tell me how can you live after me, how
My life is finishing after you
And I won't love after you
How can you leave me, tell me
My heart is asking me, How?
Oh when you close my eyes, you find myself in your heart
You open your eyes and you awaken my tenderness
For someone else I will not be madly in love as I am for you
I am crying and laughing alone
You still do not possess the eyes
How, tell me how can you forget me
How, tell me how can you live after me, how
My life is finishing after you
And I won't love after you
How can you leave me, tell me
My heart is asking me, How?

As part of my tour of Aswan which included the high dam and the unfinished obelisk, we also visited the Temple of Philae.
Built by the Greeks to honor Isis, it has some fascinating tidbits that my guide pointed out. Such as the scratches made to the images by the Coptic Christians, the first depiction of baseball and you'll have to watch to see the rest!
Highly recommended visit.
Entrance fee is about 80LE, plus 20LE for the boat to get there and back. If you prefer to stay longer, take a private guide as the group guides will shuffle you in and out.
I had 2 hours on location and I was comfortable with that. Also bring water and snacks as just like everywhere, the prices for these items are inflated.
I apologize for spelling Philae wrong in the title card.

The original construction of one of Egypt's most beautiful temples, the Temple of Isis at Philae, was done under the reign of King Ptolemy II. Flooding and the Aswan Dam forced this temple to be moved, and after 9 years of work it was reopened in 1980.
