Danish ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen shows his home and workplace for eight days during his iriss mission.
Andreas became Denmark’s first astronaut when he left our planet on 2 September 2015. ESA used the mission to test new technologies and conduct a series of scientific experiments.
Andreas operated three rovers from his temporary home in orbit. His most intricate task involved inserting a peg in a hole with a clearance of less than a millimetre. Such precision required tactile feedback that ESA has developed to allow fine control over large distances.
The Columbus laboratory is ESA’s largest single contribution to the International Space Station. It was also the first permanent European research facility in space. The state-of-the-art facility offers 75 cubic metres of space and contains an entire suite of research equipment. External platforms support experiments and applications in space science, Earth observation and technology.

Putting a round peg in a round hole is not hard to do by someone standing next to it. But on 8 September 2015 ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen did this while orbiting 400 km up aboard the International Space Station, remotely operating a rover and its robotic arm on the ground.
Andreas used a force-feedback control system developed at ESA, letting him feel for himself whenever the rover’s flexible arm met resistance.
These tactile sensations were essential for the success of the experiment, which involved placing a metal peg into a round hole in a ‘task board’ that offered less than a sixth of a millimetre of clearance. The peg needed to be inserted 4 cm to make an electrical connection.
Andreas managed two complete drive, approach, park and peg-in-hole insertions, demonstrating precision force-feedback from orbit for the very first time in the history of spaceflight.
The Interact Centaur rover used in the experiment was based at ESA’s technical centre ESTEC in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. It was designed and built by ESA’s Telerobotics & Haptics Laboratory in collaboration with graduate students from Delft University of Technology.
The Interact experiment is a first step towards developing robots that provide their operators with much wider sensory input than currently available. In this way, ESA is literally ‘extending human reach’ down to Earth from space.

wn.com/Andreas Mogensen Controls Ground Rover From Space

This timelapse shows ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen working with Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergei Volkov during the iriss mission to unpack, setup, test and then store the MARES muscle-measurement machine in Europe’s space laboratory Columbus on the International Space Station over three days.
The Muscle Atrophy Research and Exercise System, or MARES for short, is a three-in-one muscle-measurement machine on the International Space Station that monitors astronauts’ muscles as they work out.
Muscle strength decreases during spaceflight and researchers need to know why this happens in order to prepare for long-duration missions and safe space tourism. MARES is an exercise bench that offers detailed information about how muscles behave during spaceflight.
MARES was a large part of Andreas’s ten-day iriss mission to the International Space Station that started 2 September 2015.

Andreas Mogensen, 100 yıl sonra uzayın, yeryüzünde yaşayan insanların hayatında önemli rol oynayacağını belirterek "Uzaydaki hiç unutamayacağım an, yeryüzünün uzaydan görünüşüydü" dedi.

At the International Press Center in Copenhagen. Andreas Mogensen describes his mission and training, and reveals his mission logo, and ESA's Nigel Savage describes the educational programs connected with Andreas' mission. The first three questions,
at about 47 min., were from Executive Intelligence Review's Michelle Rasmussen. Question resumé: 1. The US is cutting its space program, while the Chinese and Indians are going to the Moon and Mars. Indian PM Modi is engaging youth both to eliminate poverty, and create scientific and technological progress, seeing one as necessary for the other. Why should we, during an economic crisis, still reach for the stars? 2. How does your mission relate to asteroids? 3. Because of the sanctions policy against Russia, the US is stopping part of their space cooperation. Why is it important to continue international cooperation, and not stop it because of politics?

Three crew members from the International Space Station returned to Earth on Friday. The landing in Kazakhstan wrapped up a 168-day mission for one cosmonaut and a brief 10-day visit for two, as well as returned a cache of samples from several NASA human research experiments aboard the station. Expedition 44 commander Gennady Padalka of the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) and visiting crew members Andreas Mogensen of ESA (European Space Agency) and Aidyn Aimbetov of the Kazakh Space Agency touched down at 8:51 p.m. EDT (00:51 UTC, 6:51 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, Kazakhstan time) southeast of the remote town of Dzhezkazgan in Kazakhstan. Russian recovery teams will help the crew exit the Soyuz vehicle and adjust to gravity after their stay in space. Padalka arrived at the International Space Station on March 27 along with one-year mission crew members NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and Mikhail Kornienko of Roscosmos. Padalka spent 168 days in space during Expeditions 43 and 44, traveling more than 71 million miles. This completes Padalka’s fifth trip to space for a total of 879 days in space, the most by any human. Mogensen and Aimbetov spent 10 days in space, delivering a new Soyuz spacecraft that will return Kelly and Kornienko and Russian cosmonaut Sergey Volkov in March. They arrived with Russian cosmonaut Sergey Volkov, who will return to Earth with Kelly and Kornienko in March 2016. It was the first flight to space for both Mogensen and Aimbetov, who made 160 orbits of Earth and traveled more than four million miles during their 10 days in space as visiting crew members. During their short time in orbit, they participated in a number of experiments on behalf of their respective space agencies, focusing on the areas of human research, Earth observation and technology development. They arrived with Russian cosmonaut Sergey Volkov, delivering a new Soyuz spacecraft in which Volkov, Kelly and Kornienko will return to Earth in March 2016. NASA experiments returning on the spacecraft include blood samples for NASA’s Twins Study, a unique research demonstration using Kelly and his twin brother, former NASA astronaut Mark Kelly, to understand the effects of long duration spaceflight and further NASA’s use of personalized medicine in space. Additional samples for the Salivary Markers and Microbiome studies also returned to Earth. One item, the Skinsuit, was tested in orbit by ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen. Some astronauts’ spines have been shown to lengthen as much as 7 cm in weightlessness, which can cause pain. The Skinsuit was demonstrated in microgravity to see if it may help astronauts counteract potential back problems in microgravity. The specially designed overalls simulate gravitational forces from Earth by constricting the body from shoulders to feet. Testing this clothing item in space may help astronauts with any back pain they experience on long-duration missions. Further, the Skinsuit has potential use for older adults with spine issues and people suffering from low-back pain on Earth. It also could be used as a support item for people with conditions like cerebral palsy, a disorder affecting movement, muscle tone and/or posture. Samples from one Rodent Research study are returning with this Soyuz flight, as well. These types of experiments examine how microgravity affects animals, providing information relevant to human spaceflight, discoveries in basic biology and knowledge that will have direct impact toward human health on Earth. Remaining aboard the orbiting laboratory to continue important research and station maintenance during Expedition 45 are Kelly, Kornienko, Volkov, NASA’s Kjell Lindgren, Oleg Kononenko of Roscosmos, and Kimiya Yui of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

Today, August 28, the operation was completed to undock the manned transportation spacecraft Soyuz TMA-36a from the Mini Research Module (MRM2) Poisk and dock it to the propulsion compartment of the Service Module (SM) Zvezda of the International Space Station (ISS). After reactivation, the closure of transfer hatches and their leak check, the spacecraft was undocked from MRM2 at 10:11 Moscow Time. The docking at the propulsion compartment of SM Zvezda was completed at 10:30 Moscow Time. The spacecraft stayed in free flight for 19 minutes. The opening of transfer hatches between the crew transportation spacecraft and the SM propulsion compartment is scheduled to take place within the time interval of 12:40 through 13:00 Moscow Time. Staying onboard the manned transportation spacecraft Soyuz TMA-36a during re-docking was the entire crew consisting of Roscosmos cosmonauts Gennadi Padalka, Mikhail Kornienko and the NASA astronaut Scott Kelly. The aim of the relocation operation is to free up the docking port on MRM2 Poisk to make it available for the docking of manned spacecraft Soyuz TMA-38a, which is to be launched on September 2, 2015. This spacecraft will deliver to the ISS members of the expedition crew and a visiting crew. The member of the ISS-45 Expedition crew is a Russian cosmonaut Sergei Volkov, and the members of the visiting crew are a Danish astronaut Andreas Mogensen and a Kazakh cosmonaut Aidyn Aimbetov. It is planned that after Soyuz TMA-36a undocks and lands on September 12, the docking port on the SM Zvezda propulsion compartment will be used to dock cargo transportation spacecraft ISS Progress 61, which is slated for launch on October 1, 2015.
