The Wehrmacht (German pronunciation: [ˈveːɐ̯maxt] (
listen) (Defence Force) – from German: wehren, to defend and Macht, power, force, cognate to English might) was the unified armed forces of Germany from 1935 to 1945. It consisted of the Heer (army), the Kriegsmarine (navy) and the Luftwaffe (air force).
Before the National Socialist German Workers' (Nazi) Party assumed control of the German government in 1933, the term Wehrmacht generically described a nation’s “home defence” forces, analogous to the German Streitmacht foreign war forces, thus, Britische Wehrmacht denoted “British defence forces.” The term Wehrmacht is in Article 47 of the 1919 Weimar Constitution, establishing that: Der Reichspräsident hat den Oberbefehl über die gesamte Wehrmacht des Reiches (“The National President holds supreme command of all armed forces of the nation”). From 1919, Germany’s national defence force was known as the Reichswehr, until its renaming as the Wehrmacht on 16 March 1935.
After World War II (1939–45), the Allies abolished the Wehrmacht. In 1955, when the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) remilitarized, its armed forces were named the Bundeswehr ("Federal Defence"). In 1956, upon formal establishment, the armed forces of the Communist, east German Democratic Republic (known for short in English as the GDR, or for short in German as the DDR) were named the Nationale Volksarmee (National People's Army), some of whom, with matériel, were incorporated to the Bundeswehr when the German reunification consolidated the two Germanies in 1990.

Soldiers and officers continually came into conflict with their consciences. How much freedom did individuals have? Were they executing Hitler's criminal plans, or was it the Wehrmacht's war? There were crimes against humanity, against civilians, prisoners of war, and there was the Holocaust itself. The Trent Park records discovered and analysed by historian Sönke Neitzel, author of Tapping Hitler's Generals, show that the 84 German generals who were interned at Trent Park were aware of the severity of the war crimes they had been involved in and that some discussed them almost compulsively. They included the Commissar Order, to kill any Soviet commissar, and Rathenau's order to kill the Jews, including children.

Many of the men look into the camera. Some of them are quite young. The vantage point changes to the back of the line of prisoners. A group of civilians follows behind them. Some of them run to catch up with the prisoners. Close-up of a Russian soldier on horseback. Another (longer) view of a column of prisoners walking along a two lane road in the countryside with fields on either side of the road (Germans or "white Russians who fought for Germany"). The camera moves closer to the prisoners, then follows them from behind. Back in town, another group of prisoners, in horse-drawn wagons, then trucks, pass the camera. Another (longer) view of a column of prisoners walking along a two lane road in the countryside with fields on either side of the road (Germans or "white Russians who fought for Germany"). The camera moves closer to the prisoners, then follows them from behind. Back in town, another group of prisoners, in horse-drawn wagons, then trucks, pass the camera. More prisoners, on foot and horseback, who may be "Poles who were forced to fight for Nazis." Shots of individual dead SS men, killed by the Czechs, lying on the grass. Some of the men are badly wounded but not yet dead. A group of people stands around a wounded man who raises his head briefly. A dead body with blood on his face lies with Haglund's identifying slate beside his head. Several more shots of dead and severely wounded Germans. A woman described in the shot sheet as an "SS girl" walks down the road. She has been beaten and one eye is swollen shut. Several shots of her as she walks toward the camera. She clasps her hands (she appears to be holding a deck of playing cards) and looks down. The camera pans down her body. A half-naked man with blood on his face lies on the grass and looks at the camera. Another shot of the same woman. She sits on the grass with two men and another man stands in front of them. A group of American soldiers stand and look down at the corpse of a young boy in a German military coat. A white handkerchief is placed over the face of another dead man. Various scenes with smiling Czech civilians. Two young girls, surrounded by German POWs are filmed close-up. They look nervously at the camera (accused collaborators?).

Americans drive tanks down the road behind the prisoners. More prisoners; this time the camera follows their legs and feet. Several of the men wear no shoes. Tanks, shot from below, with smiling American soldiers.

Mit diesem Video möchte ich weder dem Nationalsozialismus, noch deren Führung oder begangene ungerechtigkeiten entschuldigen oder gar rechtfertigen. Es soll lediglich Gerechtigkeit schaffen! Gerechtigkeit in einer Welt, in der Deutschland als einziger Kriegsauslöser gegeißelt wird, deren Angehörige als Verbrecher bezeichnet werden aber alliierte Kriegsverbrechen verleugnet oder gar entschuldigt werden. Krieg ist leider immer eine schlimme Sache weil die Zivilbevölkerung darunter leidet und nicht die Verantwortlichen! Aber mein Motto ist: "Jeder Krieg ist unmenschlich aber es ist auch unmenschlich alle Soldaten als Verbrecher zu bezeichnen"!. Nach vorangegangenen Teilkapitulationen auf einzelnen Kriegsschauplätzen mußte die deutsche Wehrmacht am 8. Mai 1945 bedingungslos kapitulieren. Damit fand ein fast fünfjähriges Ringen um die Mitte Europas sein Ende. Schulter an Schulter mit Hunderttausenden Freiwilliger anderer Völker hatten Millionen deutscher Soldaten Leben und Gesundheit bis zum letzten Kriegstag eingesetzt, um Deutschland vor dem Bolschewismus und der amerikanischen Ausbeutung zu bewahren. Gegnerische Truppenführer wie Eisenhower oder Montgomery und angesehene ausländische Militärhistoriker wie Liddell Hart oder Fuller haben sich lobend über Geist, Disziplin und ehrenhafte Kampfführung der deutschen Soldaten im Zweiten Weltkrieg ausgesprochen, die sich auch durch die völkerrechtswidrigen Kriegsweisen ihrer Gegner etwa bei deren Einsatz von Partisanen in Rußland und auf dem Balkan, aber auch in Italien und Frankreich – entgegen unberechtigten Vorwürfen nicht von der geraden Linie deutschen Soldatentums abbringen ließen.

Reinhold Elstner ( 1919 im Sudetenland; 26. April 1995 in München) war ein deutscher Diplom-Chemiker und Kriegsveteran der Deutschen Wehrmacht. Aus Protest gegen die Verfälschung der deutschen Geschichte verbrannte er sich am 25. April 1995 öffentlich vor der Feldherrenhalle in München und starb am Tag darauf an seinen schweren Verbrennungen.

Mit diesem Video möchte ich weder dem Nationalsozialismus, noch deren Führung oder begangene ungerechtigkeiten entschuldigen oder gar rechtfertigen. Es soll lediglich Gerechtigkeit schaffen! Gerechtigkeit in einer Welt, in der Deutschland als einziger Kriegsauslöser gegeißelt wird, deren Angehörige als Verbrecher bezeichnet werden aber alliierte Kriegsverbrechen verleugnet oder gar entschuldigt werden. Krieg ist leider immer eine schlimme Sache weil die Zivilbevölkerung darunter leidet und nicht die Verantwortlichen! Aber mein Motto ist: "Jeder Krieg ist unmenschlich aber es ist auch unmenschlich alle Soldaten als Verbrecher zu bezeichnen"!. Nach vorangegangenen Teilkapitulationen auf einzelnen Kriegsschauplätzen mußte die deutsche Wehrmacht am 8. Mai 1945 bedingungslos kapitulieren. Damit fand ein fast fünfjähriges Ringen um die Mitte Europas sein Ende. Schulter an Schulter mit Hunderttausenden Freiwilliger anderer Völker hatten Millionen deutscher Soldaten Leben und Gesundheit bis zum letzten Kriegstag eingesetzt, um Deutschland vor dem Bolschewismus und der amerikanischen Ausbeutung zu bewahren. Gegnerische Truppenführer wie Eisenhower oder Montgomery und angesehene ausländische Militärhistoriker wie Liddell Hart oder Fuller haben sich lobend über Geist, Disziplin und ehrenhafte Kampfführung der deutschen Soldaten im Zweiten Weltkrieg ausgesprochen, die sich auch durch die völkerrechtswidrigen Kriegsweisen ihrer Gegner etwa bei deren Einsatz von Partisanen in Rußland und auf dem Balkan, aber auch in Italien und Frankreich – entgegen unberechtigten Vorwürfen nicht von der geraden Linie deutschen Soldatentums abbringen ließen.

Reinhold Elstner ( 1919 im Sudetenland; 26. April 1995 in München) war ein deutscher Diplom-Chemiker und Kriegsveteran der Deutschen Wehrmacht. Aus Protest gegen die Verfälschung der deutschen Geschichte verbrannte er sich am 25. April 1995 öffentlich vor der Feldherrenhalle in München und starb am Tag darauf an seinen schweren Verbrennungen.
