At least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 per day
To put things into perspective, the top 20% of the world's population accounts for three quarters of the world's income
Half of the world's population accounts for only 5% of the world's income
According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die every day due to poverty
Nearly one third of children in developing countries are estimated to be underweight or stunted
Last year, about 70 million children of primary school age were not in school
Nearly a billion people celebrated the coming of the 21st century without being able to read a book or sign their name
Preventable diseases like Malaria afflict nearly 500 million people every year
Africa alone accounts for roughly 1 million deaths due to Malaria annually. Most of them are children
Speaking of children, there are 2.2 billion children in the world.
Half of them live in extreme poverty
Over 1 billion people have inadequate access to water and 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation. Many times this means no separation of drinking water and toilet water.
That is why 1.8 million children die every year of diarrhoea
Approximately half of the world's population now lives in cities and about one third of those in the cities live in slum conditions
In fact, slum growth is outpacing urban growth by a frighteningly large margin
One quarter of humanity lives without electricity
The 7 richest people in the world make more than the poorest 41 countries combined (roughly 567 million people)
.14% of the world population own over 80% of the world's private financial wealth. The vast majority of that wealth has managed to avoid all income and estate taxes, either by the countries where it has been invested or where it comes from.
For every $1 in aid that a developing country receives, over $25 is spent on debt repayment.
The poorer the country, the more likely it is that the debt repayments are being extracted directly from the people who neither contracted the loans nor received any money
In 1998 $8 billion dollars was spent on cosmetics in the United States, $11 billion was spent on ice cream in the European Union, $17 billion was spent on pet food in Europe and the US, $100 billion was spent on alcohol in Europe, $400 billion was spent on narcotics globally, and $780 billion was spent on militaries around the world.
In the same year $6 billion was spent on achieving basic education for all, $9 billion was spent on basic water and sanitation for all, and $13 billion was spent on basic health and nutrition for all
If you are reading this list then you are in the top 30% of the world's population when it comes to poverty and wealth
With new technologies we now grow enough food to feed 10 billion people or 1.5 times the world population. The problem is that most of the world can't afford to buy that food.
If the world spent less than 1% of what it spends on weapons all the previously mentioned issues would be fixed

But here's the amazing news: after decades of unprecedented progress, we can actually eradicate extreme poverty by 2030. USAID's Policy Chief, Alex Thier, explains how it can happen, and how you can help solve humanity's greatest challenge.
Alex Thier leads policy development, strategic planning, learning and evaluation at the U.S. Agency for International Development – the lead development agency for the US government and the world’s largest bi-lateral donor. Prior to that, Alex was responsible for USAID’s multi-billion dollar investment portfolio in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Alex has previously held leadership positions at the U.S. Institute of Peace and the Genocide Prevention Task Force, and directed the Project on Failed States at Stanford’s Center on Democracy, Development, and Rule of Law. He spent years in the field as a humanitarian, community development organizer, and legal advisor for the United Nations, Oxfam, and the International Crisis Group, among others. After the fall of the Taliban, he worked on the process of making a new constitution and reestablishing Afghanistan’s judicial system.

Growing up poor in modern Australia: this week Four Corners asks children what it's like being poor in the midst of plenty.
We hear from the adult world all the time about what poverty is and how to fix it, but rarely from the children who experience it. Nobody likes to admit they're poor but children from five families allowed Four Corners into their lives to show us the world from their point of view:
"My parents get paid on Friday right, so during the week they probably have money. Wednesday, Thursday or sometimes Tuesday, you know, what are we supposed to eat?"
At 12, Jessica has a bleak view of her future:
"A good job, like where you get like heaps of money. I'd be like a decent mum, like a husband with no violence and everything, so it could be a happy family, you know, but like that would never happen..."
These are children living in areas of concentrated disadvantage where the adult world can be a scary place:
Hayden: "...my dad, he got bashed, he got sliced with a knife."
Some remain optimistic despite the chaos around them:
Dale: "Anything is possible when you put all your heart into it. Just try your best. I've been saying that a lot haven't I?"
The question arises, why isn't more being done to break the cycle of disadvantage? Will this generation of Australia's children be given more to hope for than their parents?

Poverty is the state of one who lacks a certain amount of material possessions or money.Absolute poverty or destitution refers to the one who lacks basic human needs, which commonly includes clean and fresh water, nutrition, health care, education, clothing and shelter. About 1.7 billion people are estimated to live in absolute poverty today. Relative poverty refers to lacking a usual or socially acceptable level of resources or income as compared with others within a society or country. For most of history poverty had been mostly accepted as inevitable as traditional modes of production were insufficient to give an entire population a comfortable standard of living. After the industrial revolution, mass production in factories made wealth increasingly more inexpensive and accessible. Of more importance is the modernization of agriculture, such as fertilizers, in order to provide enough yield to feed the population. People who practise asceticism intentionally live in poverty.
The supply of basic needs can be restricted by constraints on government services such as corruption, debt and loan conditionalities and by the brain drain of health care and educational professionals. Strategies of increasing income to make basic needs more affordable typically include welfare, economic freedom, and providing financial services. Today, poverty reduction is a major goal and issue for many international organizations such as the United Nations and the World Bank.

William Henry "Bill" Gates III (born October 28, 1955 in Seattle, Washington) is an American business magnate, computer programmer and philanthropist. Gates is the former chief executive officer (CEO) and current chairman of Microsoft, the world’s largest personal-computer software company he co-founded with Paul Allen. He is consistently ranked among the world's wealthiest people and was the wealthiest overall from 1995 to 2009, excluding 2008, when he was ranked third; in 2011 he was the wealthiest American and the second wealthiest person. During his career at Microsoft, Gates held the positions of CEO and chief software architect, and remains the largest individual shareholder, with 6.4 percent of the common stock. At least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 per day
To put things into perspective, the top 20% of the world's population accounts for three quarters of the world's income
Half of the world's population accounts for only 5% of the world's income
According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die every day due to poverty
Nearly one third of children in developing countries are estimated to be underweight or stunted
Last year, about 70 million children of primary school age were not in school
Nearly a billion people celebrated the coming of the 21st century without being able to read a book or sign their name
Preventable diseases like Malaria afflict nearly 500 million people every year
Africa alone accounts for roughly 1 million deaths due to Malaria annually. Most of them are children
Speaking of children, there are 2.2 billion children in the world.
Half of them live in extreme poverty
Over 1 billion people have inadequate access to water and 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation. Many times this means no separation of drinking water and toilet water.
That is why 1.8 million children die every year of diarrhoea
Approximately half of the world's population now lives in cities and about one third of those in the cities live in slum conditions
In fact, slum growth is outpacing urban growth by a frighteningly large margin
One quarter of humanity lives without electricity
The 7 richest people in the world make more than the poorest 41 countries combined (roughly 567 million people)

To put things into perspective, the top 20% of the world's population accounts for three quarters of the world's income
Half of the world's population accounts for only 5% of the world's income
According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die every day due to poverty
Nearly one third of children in developing countries are estimated to be underweight or stunted
Last year, about 70 million children of primary school age were not in school
Nearly a billion people celebrated the coming of the 21st century without being able to read a book or sign their name
Preventable diseases like Malaria afflict nearly 500 million people every year
Africa alone accounts for roughly 1 million deaths due to Malaria annually. Most of them are children
Speaking of children, there are 2.2 billion children in the world.
Half of them live in extreme poverty
Over 1 billion people have inadequate access to water and 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation. Many times this means no separation of drinking water and toilet water.
That is why 1.8 million children die every year of diarrhoea
Approximately half of the world's population now lives in cities and about one third of those in the cities live in slum conditions
In fact, slum growth is outpacing urban growth by a frighteningly large margin

If you were born on Earth in 1980 you had a 50/50 chance of living in destitution. But here's the amazing news: after decades of unprecedented progress, we can actually eradicate extreme poverty by 2030. USAID's Policy Chief, Alex Thier, explains how it can happen, and how you can help solve humanity's greatest challenge.
Alex Thier leads policy development, strategic planning, learning and evaluation at the U.S. Agency for International Development – the lead development agency for the US government and the world’s largest bi-lateral donor. Prior to that, Alex was responsible for USAID’s multi-billion dollar investment portfolio in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Alex has previously held leadership positions at the U.S. Institute of Peace and the Genocide Prevention Task Force, and directed the Project on Failed States at Stanford’s Center on Democracy, Development, and Rule of Law. He spent years in the field as a humanitarian, community development organizer, and legal advisor for the United Nations, Oxfam, and the International Crisis Group, among others. After the fall of the Taliban, he worked on the process of making a new constitution and reestablishing Afghanistan’s judicial system.

Growing up poor in modern Australia: this week Four Corners asks children what it's like being poor in the midst of plenty.
We hear from the adult world all the time about what poverty is and how to fix it, but rarely from the children who experience it. Nobody likes to admit they're poor but children from five families allowed Four Corners into their lives to show us the world from their point of view:
"My parents get paid on Friday right, so during the week they probably have money. Wednesday, Thursday or sometimes Tuesday, you know, what are we supposed to eat?"
At 12, Jessica has a bleak view of her future:
"A good job, like where you get like heaps of money. I'd be like a decent mum, like a husband with no violence and everything, so it could be a happy family, you know, but like that would never happen..."
These are children living in areas of concentrated disadvantage where the adult world can be a scary place:
Hayden: "...my dad, he got bashed, he got sliced with a knife."
Some remain optimistic despite the chaos around them:
Dale: "Anything is possible when you put all your heart into it. Just try your best. I've been saying that a lot haven't I?"
The question arises, why isn't more being done to break the cycle of disadvantage? Will this generation of Australia's children be given more to hope for than their parents?

Today Professors in Poverty premieres at a Congressional briefing calling on politicians, colleges and universities to priorities adjunct professors and the quality of higher education in America now. And thanks to hundreds of small contributions Professors in Poverty is now available online for all to see.
The corporate model of higher education is pushing professors into poverty and this model is a disaster.
More than half of college faculty are adjunct – or part-time - professors.
College tuition is rising at twice the rate of inflation. By hiring more adjuncts and less tenure track professors, colleges and universities are diminishing the quality of education for students and professors.
Adjunct professors have limited access to resources like technology, office space, resources and they receive no benefits.
1 in 4 part-time faculty receive public assistance
31% if part-time faculty live near or below the poverty line
$22,500 is the average salary of adjunct professors
60% of part-time professors have additional jobs
Any professor living in poverty is unacceptable – especially when you consider the rising cost of tuition and the amount of money colleges and universities are taking in.

The mine was shut down not out of environmental or safety concerns, but because the US Forest service wanted access to the accumulated aggregates for road building projects.
The first records of work at the Poverty Hill site date back to 1858. The site was first worked by drift and hydraulic mining and then a large dredging operation was run in the resulting pits.
