This is Pedipalp, a phidippus audax jumping spider. She was really docile to the point she seems tamed. I would say the cutest part of the video is when she does a "salute" with her right pedipalp. I know I have quite a bit of "cute" jumping spider vids, but I never get tired of these jumpers. Pedipalp was released on May 30, she is back living in the wild where I found her. She has been my favorite spider since I really got into jumpers, which is when I recorded the video of a platycryptus undatus and titled it World's Cutest Jumping Spider on My Finger. There are vids of spiders on Youtube that depict spiders in so many ways, from being creepy, a big spider attacking a Daddy, a Mama, a cat, or whatever else they have. Then there are a lot of pet spiders, world largest spiders, spiders on national geographic. Then there are the funny videos like those by Zack Scott with the "giant kitchen spider" or other giant spiders he finds. His videos are hilarious, I love watching them from time to time. Another vid I like is "big spider attacks daddy", by leokimvideo. Then there are the jumping spider vids, these really are the ones that got me into spiders and handling spiders. As I saw the vids of jumpers, cute came to my mind, especially after I had recorded my first handling of a jumping spider, and that would be the "worlds cutest jumping spider on my finger" video. Many people will say something nice about jumpers which are the salticidae group of spiders, but there are those who still say jumpers look creepy or disgusting. I guess cuteness is in the eye of the beholder. Thomas Shahan(terser) and Bob(BobCsAll) really got me into jumping spiders with their videos. Gotta love the jumpers.

I released her and the spiderlings back into the wild. Xcaliber eventually passed away, so I don't have him anymore. He was a spider I rescued at Taco Bell. One of the employess was mopping the floor, and I saw the spider with oil, water and soap all over him. I took him home quickly and dried him off, but he quit breathing a few minutes later. I was about to throw him away, but I decided to try something, and amazingly it worked. I put the spider in warm water and stirred him around while he was unconsious to get the soap and oil out of his booklungs. Then I dried the spider the best I could and got air blowing on him and started moving his abdomen around. About 20 minutes later, he suddenly moved his legs. So I flipped him rightside up, and kept moving him some more. The he was really lively. I do have a video of him after his rescue, but this was before I had my Hi-Def camcorder. It was before his molt too, he still had orange spots when I rescued him. He was the coolest male audax spider I ever had.

Tried filming this old girl with the Raynox DCR-250 macro conversion lens. It's a very difficult task, especially with a cheap tripod and a spider that doesn't want to sit still. Although she is really calm if you go by jumping spider standards.

Pedipalps (commonly shortened to palps or palpi), are the second pair of appendages of the prosoma in the subphylum Chelicerata. They are traditionally thought to be homologous with mandibles in Crustacea and insects, although more recent studies (e.g. using Hox genes) suggest they are probably homologous with the crustacean second antennae.
Chelicerate pedipalps are appendages of six articles: the coxae, a single trochanter, the femur, a short patella, the tibia, and the tarsus. In spiders the coxae frequently have extensions called maxillae or gnathobases, which function as mouth parts with or without some contribution from the coxae of the anterior legs. The limbs themselves may be simple tactile organs outwardly resembling the legs, as in spiders, or chelate weapons of great size, as in the scorpions. Comparative studies of pedipalpal morphology may suggest that leg-like pedipalps are primitive in Arachnida. At present, the only reasonable alternative to this view is to assume that xiphosurans reflect the morphology of the primitive arachnid pedipalp and to conclude that this appendage is primitively chelate. Chelate or sub chelate pedipalps are found in several arachnid groups, i.e. Ricinulei, Thelyphonida, Scorpiones and Pseudoscorpiones, but the chelae in most of these taxa may not be homologous with those found in Xiphosura. The pedipalps are distinctly raptorial in Amblypygi, Thelyphonida, Schizomida and some Opiliones belonging to the laniatorid group.

Little phidippus audax jumping spider spiderlings. These are the spiderlings from the mating of Pedipalp and Xcaliber, my 2 audax jumping spiders that I had. I let Pedipalp go, but Xcaliber died. I heard the males don't live as long if they have mated, seems there may be some truth to that since he died about 2 months later.

I have had her for a while, and she got the nickname "Pedipalp" because she was missing a pedipalp and one leg when I found her. She was mated with my male on 3-3-11, so she should be having some little jumpers in the spring or summer if her eggs are fertile. She is gravid, so she should be laying them soon.

This is one of several videos that I did with my last day to spend with Pedipalp, my phidippus audax jumping spider. I let her go back into the wild because I know her time is fairly short to live. She will probably live to about the month of November at the most. I let her go because I didn't want to get up one day and find her dead. She's the most awesome spider I have ever owned. Such a great personality, and always could make me laugh with her facial expressions. I know it sounds odd, but I will miss this spider so much.

The organ resembles a musical instrument. The wolf spider has two small, leglike appendages near its mouth called pedipalps. The lowest joint on the pedipalp has a rough surface (called a file) on one side and a scraper on the other. The spider can rub its pedipalps together so that the file and scraper cross each other, "and that creates the vibrations that then travel down the limb to the leaf," Sweger said ...
