Fifty thousand refugees will have arrived in Berlin by the end of the year. That's roughly four times as many as last year. For weeks, long queues have formed in front of the initial reception center at the State Office for Health and Social Affairs; every day volunteers try to help the hundreds of newcomers seeking a temporary place to live.
The hostel: What was intended as a short-term fix has degenerated into a permanent solution. Many hostel operators don't want to accommodate refugees anymore because the government vouchers are paid out too late. On the other end of the spectrum, some hostel owners have specialized in accommodating refugees, taking advantage of the government vouchers through inhuman methods - crowding numerous refugees into rooms to profit as much possible .
VICE Germany followed refugees in their search for housing, speaking with volunteers, hostel operators, squatters, and Berlin politicians along the way. Using hidden cameras, they got an uncensored look into inept bureaucracy that's causing people to sit for weeks without stable accommodation, and saw how some hostels operators are earning million euros profiting from the city's refugee crisis.

EDREMIT, TURKEY — Syrian migrant Pelen Hussein was making the dangerous journey from Syria to Europe, when his boat capsized in the Aegean Sea on Monday.
According to reports, the 20-year-old been desperately clinging to his sinking boat for several hours until the Turkish Coast Guard Air Command saw him.
The footage, filmed with a helmet camera, shows a Coast Guard official lowering himself from a helicopter and swimming to rescue Hussein. He was transported via helicopter to land and treated at a local hospital.
On Monday Feb. 8, 27 migrants drowned when a yacht attempting to reach Turkey from Greece sank off the Aegean coast. Eleven on board were children.

Following the deadly attacks in Paris on November 13, 2015, 31 US state officials declared that they would deny entry to Syrian refugees, citing security concerns. The refugee resettlement program has already been under scrutiny in the US for a few months, and by December 11, Congress will make a decision on the 206 federal budget, which includes deciding on the contentious issue of whether the refugee resettlement program will get the funding it needs to operate.

A refugee is a person who is outside their country of origin or habitual residence because they have suffered persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or because they are a member of a persecuted 'social group'. Such a person may be referred to as an 'asylum seeker' until recognized by the state where (s)he makes his(er) claim.
Refugee women and children represent an additional subsection of refugees that need special attention. For the refugee system to work successfully, countries must be prepared to allow Open borders for people fleeing conflict, particularly for countries closest to the conflict. This is a program that has helped many people, but people still believe there are flaws. Getting to a refugee camp is extremely difficult.
As of December 31, 2005, the largest source countries of refugees are Afghanistan, Iraq, Sierra Leone, Myanmar, Somalia, South Sudan, and the Palestinian Territories.[clarification needed] The country with the largest number of IDPs is South Sudan, with over 5 million. As of 2006, with 800,000 refugees and IDPs, Azerbaijan had the highest per capita IDP population in the world.

Thomas Earl "Tom" Petty (born October 20, 1950) is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He is the frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and was a founding member of the late 1980s supergroup Traveling Wilburys and Mudcrutch. He has also performed under the pseudonyms of Charlie T. Wilbury, Jr. and Muddy Wilbury.
He has recorded a number of hit singles with the Heartbreakers and as a solo artist, many of which remain heavily played on adult contemporary and classic rock radio. His music, and notably his hits, have become popular among younger generations as he continues to host sold-out shows. Throughout his career, Petty and his collaborators have sold 60 million albums.
Tom Petty was born and raised in Gainesville, Florida, and attended Gainesville High School. His interest in rock and roll music began at age 10 when he met Elvis Presley. In the summer of 1961, his uncle was working on the set of Presley's film Follow That Dream in nearby Ocala, Florida and invited Petty to come down and watch the shoot. He instantly became an Elvis Presley fan and soon traded his Wham-O slingshot for a box of Elvis 45s. In a 2006 interview on the National Public Radio program Fresh Air, Petty said that he knew he wanted to be in a band the moment he saw The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show. One of his first guitar teachers was Don Felder, a fellow Gainesville resident, who would later join the Eagles. As a young man, Petty worked briefly on the grounds crew for the University of Florida, but never attended as a student. An Ogeechee lime tree that he planted while employed at the University is now called the Tom Petty tree.

Kanye Omari West (
/ˈkɑːnjeɪ/; born June 8, 1977) is an American musician, film director and fashion designer. West first rose to fame as a producer for Roc-A-Fella Records, where he eventually achieved recognition for his work on Jay-Z's album The Blueprint, as well as hit singles for musical artists including Alicia Keys, Ludacris, and Janet Jackson. His style of production originally used pitched-up vocal samples from soul songs incorporated with his own drums and instruments. As of 2012, West has won a total of eighteen Grammy Awards, making him one of the most awarded artists of all-time. All albums have been very commercially successful, with My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy becoming his fourth consecutive No. 1 album in the U.S. upon release. West has had 5 songs exceed 3 million in digital sales as of July 2011, with "Gold Digger" selling 3,086,000, "Stronger" selling 4,402,000, "Heartless" selling 3,742,000, "E.T." selling over 4,000,000 and "Love Lockdown" selling over 3,000,000 placing him third in overall digital sales of the past decade. He has sold over 30 million digital songs in the United States making him one of the best-selling digital artists of all-time.

Fifty thousand refugees will have arrived in Berlin by the end of the year. That's roughly four times as many as last year. For weeks, long queues have formed in front of the initial reception center at the State Office for Health and Social Affairs; every day volunteers try to help the hundreds of newcomers seeking a temporary place to live.
The hostel: What was intended as a short-term fix has degenerated into a permanent solution. Many hostel operators don't want to accommodate refugees anymore because the government vouchers are paid out too late. On the other end of the spectrum, some hostel owners have specialized in accommodating refugees, taking advantage of the government vouchers through inhuman methods - crowding numerous refugees into rooms to profit as much possible .
VICE Germany followed refugees in their search for housing, speaking with volunteers, hostel operators, squatters, and Berlin politicians along the way. Fifty thousand refugees will have arrived in Berlin by the end of the year. That's roughly four times as many as last year. For weeks, long queues have formed in front of the initial reception center at the State Office for Health and Social Affairs; every day volunteers try to help the hundreds of newcomers seeking a temporary place to live.
The hostel: What was intended as a short-term fix has degenerated into a permanent solution. Many hostel operators don't want to accommodate refugees anymore because the government vouchers are paid out too late. On the other end of the spectrum, some hostel owners have specialized in accommodating refugees, taking advantage of the government vouchers through inhuman methods - crowding numerous refugees into rooms to profit as much possible .
VICE Germany followed refugees in their search for housing, speaking with volunteers, hostel operators, squatters, and Berlin politicians along the way. Using hidden cameras, they got an uncensored look into inept bureaucracy that's causing people to sit for weeks without stable accommodation, and saw how some hostels operators are earning million euros profiting from the city's refugee crisis.

EDREMIT, TURKEY — Syrian migrant Pelen Hussein was making the dangerous journey from Syria to Europe, when his boat capsized in the Aegean Sea on Monday.
According to reports, the 20-year-old been desperately clinging to his sinking boat for several hours until the Turkish Coast Guard Air Command saw him.
The footage, filmed with a helmet camera, shows a Coast Guard official lowering himself from a helicopter and swimming to rescue Hussein. He was transported via helicopter to land and treated at a local hospital.
On Monday Feb. 8, 27 migrants drowned when a yacht attempting to reach Turkey from Greece sank off the Aegean coast. Eleven on board were children.

Dramatic scenes unfolded in the Hungarian town of Bicske on Thursday when a distraught Syrian refugee pushed his wife and their young child on the rail tracks in protest over Hungarian authorities not allowing them to continue their journey to Western Europe.
A train carrying migrants stopped at Bicske, 35 kilometres (22 miles) west of Budapest, where one of Hungary's refugee camps is located, and police took migrants off the train.

On the heels of the Paris Terrorist Attack and new ISIS threats against the United States, the American people are beginning to ask questions about the intake of Syrian refugees.
The United States is currently taking in 10,000 Syrian refugees and President Barack Obama has commented about taking in 100,000 refugees total (not just from Syria) in each of the next two years.
The Governors of 31 U.S. States are refusing to take any additional refugees from Syria – and others are demanding additional information on the efficacy of any screening procedures.
On November 19th, the U.S. House of Representatives approved legislation requiring new screening of Middle Eastern refugees. President Barack Obama threatened to veto the legislation, but the 289-137 vote - including 47 Democrats - is enough to override any veto attempt and these concerns cross party lines.

In the last couple of months, the media headlines have been dominated by the presence of refugees in major European cities. The rush of refugees to Europe has caused considerable diplomatic and domestic turmoil. Refugees from Syria, followed by African and Balkan nations, form the vast majority of the people seeking asylum. In most cases, the refugees pay large sums of money for a chance to reach Europe, and in many cases it’s a life risking gamble.
The massive arrival of asylum seekers in Europe is not something new. Migration in and out of Europe has taken shape throughout history. However, the current human flow into Europe is different from historic migrations, and such unprecedented events carry with them economic and political repercussions that are shaking the European countries to their constitutional foundations. The most recognizable difference is the fact that the refugees are mostly from culturally distinct countries such as Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

The civil war in Syria has created the world's worst refugee crisis in twenty years. 2.8 million people have fled their homeland to live in foreign camps, such as the UNHCR camp in northern Jordan.
"I always heard the word refugee but I never imagined I would be one", says Samar Hariri, a grieving school teacher and mother of five. Samar, her husband and their children are just a handful of the 100,000 displaced Syrians who flocked to Camp Zaatari - just a few kilometres from the border with Syria - and who now call it home. Two years ago, collections of tents sat incongruously in the middle of this barren desert. Now a refugee city with a distinctive heart and soul of its own, a community of resilient, hopeful people looks set to grow ever more established. "You ask yourself, why is this happening to me? A person who always had dignity now has none". Once a prosperous, middle class family man, Abu Diaa now focuses on transforming their camp into something resembling home: an essential coping mechanism for enduring life in a refugee camp. It is an impulse Kilian Kleinschmidt, head of Zaatari Camp, understands: "When you lose everything... your home, your belongings, you have lost your identity. Everything has gone." In this deeply moving report we witness the stoicism of a family rebuilding themselves among thousands of others.

The rapid influx of refugees from conflict areas such as Syria has overwhelmed European countries, but how are the refugees coping with their new lives? The German government says they're welcome, but what's the reality?
"Sometimes when I'm in the supermarket or I'm walking in the street, people look at me in a bad way and say bad words in German", Muhammad Ismail says. He's been settled in Hoyerswerda in the former East Germany, a region that's seen recent attacks on refugee housing by violent mobs of Neo-Nazis. "I have friends, they told me to take care, to be careful", he says. At Neo-Nazi rallies in Dresden, there's praise for Australia's asylum policy of turning back the boats. "Instead of accepting them into Australia they send them back home", Jens Baur from the far right NPD party tells a crowd outside a refugee camp. In spite of the hostility faced by many refugees arriving in Europe, returning home could lead to far worse circumstances. As Syrian refugee Abu Fahdi explains: "I left them so I could try to save them. There was absolutely no other way to save them except coming here".

The PEGIDA movement is spreading across Germany, accelerated by Merkel's decision to open the country's borders. This report travels between PEGIDA, aid volunteers and refugees to explore a widening political division.
In Dresden, the birthplace of PEGIDA, protesters convene at a square once named after Adolf Hitler to rally against the open-door policy of Angela Merkel. "She has no right to mix the German people, to create a new people, influenced by Islam", explains Tatjana Festerling, the party's second in command. "Merkel is the most dangerous woman in Europe." Around 40,000 refugees came to Germany in just 6 weeks, but now German society appears to be increasingly polarised. Extensive support has been provided to refugees in Germany by the army, the Red Cross and volunteers. "It's just humanity. It has nothing to do with being a German", explains one volunteer. Yet even volunteers are becoming wary of the mass influx: "We do not know who is coming, that's frightening". Mikko Stübner-Lankuttis, who grew up in West Berlin, describes the collective German guilt that has been passed down to his generation: "For this reason alone we cannot refuse these refugees with a clear conscience". As German TV presenter Anke Plättner describes, "It is engrained in us Germans: the cry of 'never again'". As past and present collide, Germany's multicultural future hangs in the balance.

One in five Germans today have a migration background, but one study has found that a shocking 57% of Germans now see Islam as a threat to life in Europe. "Sometimes I realise that people are afraid of me... even when I go to the shops or something, they are afraid of talking to me", says Sonia Zayed, a Muslim. Hate crimes against foreigners have also risen across the country. "The Pegida Movement really empowers the kind of people who are willing to use violence against migrants", explains civil rights activist Robert Kusche. Anti-Pegida protests are springing up across Germany, but has Pegida already inflicted harm on Germany's immigration policy?
