Today On The Michelangelo Signorile Show on SiriusXM PROGRESS ch.127

During last night’s Democratic presidential debate on MSNBC, Sec. Hillary Clinton was asked if she would release the transcripts of her paid speeches, in response she said that she would “look in to it”.  However, this was not the first time she was asked this question, two weeks ago in Manchester, New Hampshire investigative journalist Lee Fang of The Intercept also asked her the question, and on that occasion her answer was very different.  Lee joins me today to talk all about the money that Sec. Clinton made from paid speeches and the calls for her to release the transcripts.  You can also follow Lee on twitter.

When Louis Vuitton announced that 17-year old male actor Jaden Smith would be the new face of its womenswear campaign, some people credited the young man for being a fashion “trailblazer,” however the reaction on social media wasn’t so positive. Online, he was called him a “young confused man,” with some people going so far as to claim that his clothing choices are an insult to black masculinityThis reaction seems to be very different from the one received by other young female celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Ruby Rose who have also expressed their own complicated relationship with gender, which according to my guest Nico Lang shows that gender fluidity in our society has a toxic masculinity problem.  Nico joins me today in studio to talk all about the varying levels of acceptance for gender fluid men and women in society.

Recently, shows like Serial and Making a Murderer have brought the problems associated with the criminal justice system and the prevalence of wrongful convictions into the national spot light, and according to a new report from the University of Michigan Law School's National Registry of Exonerations, 2015 set a record for the number of wrongly convicted Americans who were finally exonerated.  The report details how many of these wrongful convictions were the result of law enforcement misconduct and false confessions which helped to land many innocent people in prison.  Joining me today to discuss the report and its findings is Stephanie Mencimer a Staff Writer in Mother Jones' Washington bureau and a Board member of The Fund for Investigative Journalism.  You can also follow Stephanie on twitter.

The Michelangelo Signorile Show on SiriusXM PROGRESS ch.127

Following his third place finish in Iowa, Sen. Marco Rubio gave a concession speech that sounded more like a victory speech, and he wasn’t the only one to interpret the night that way. Other media outlets have also said that he will now become the top choice for the party establishment.  However, according to Kira Lerner, Political Reporter for ThinkProgress he is one of the most extreme among the Republican field when it comes to issues like surveillance and rights for same-sex couples and has long ago abandoned his more moderate positions on issues like immigration.  Kira joins me today to talk all about the ways in which Rubio is far more extreme than other candidates

From 2009 to 2013, Alec Ross served as Sec. Hillary Clinton’s top adviser on innovation and technology, traveling to more than 40 countries to observe a variety of technological advances. In his new book The Industries of the Future, he explores emerging fields, such as robotics, genomics, and big data and discusses what the impact these industries will have on the global economy, politics and what the possible social consequences of them might be.  Alec joins me today in studio to talk all about the book and the approaching robotics age.

The Michelangelo Signorile Show on SiriusXM PROGRESS ch.127

On the show we talk a lot about the modern conservative movement and the effect they have on the American political scene, and much has been written of how this movement got its start and began to consolidate power across the country.  In her new book Right Out Of California: The 1930’s and The Big Business Roots of Modern Conservatism historian Kathryn S. Olmsted offers a new perspective on the birth of modern conservatism and examines the explosive labor disputes in the agricultural fields of Depression-era California and tells how this brief moment of upheaval terrified business leaders into rethinking their relationship to American politics.  Kathryn joins me today on the show to talk all about the book and how California’s businessmen learned the language of populism with the help of allies in the media and entertainment industries and in the process created a new style of politics featuring many of the things we are familiar with today; corporate funding of grassroots groups, military-style intelligence gathering against political enemies, professional campaign consultants, and alliances between religious and economic conservatives.

When music critic and journalist Rashod Ollison was growing up in rural Arkansas things were not always easy for him and his family, however through all of his pain and struggles he was able to turn to music to make sense of his life.  In his new memoir Soul Serenade: Rhythm,Blues, & Coming of Age Though Vinyl he details the trials and tribulations of his early life and explains how through the R&B songs that played on 45s in the smoky rooms of his childhood he was able to understand and escape from all his problems.  Rashod joins me today on the show to talk all about the book.

Can a football game affect the outcome of an election? What about shark attacks? Or a drought? In a rational world the answer, of course, would be no, but according to historian Rick Shenkman the answer is not as easy as that.  In his new book Political Animals: How Our Stone Age Brain Gets in the Way of Smart Politics, he argues that our world is anything but rational and draws on science, politics, and history to explore the hidden forces behind our often illogical choices.   Rick joins me today on the show to talk all about the book.
