The program is hosted by Ryan Seacrest.Originally a production of Watermark Inc. (later a division of ABC Radio, now Cumulus Media Networks), AT40 is now distributed by Premiere Radio Networks in the United States, Canada, Australia, the Philippines, Singapore, China, India, the United Kingdom, Malaysia and several other territories worldwide. It can also be heard on both the iHeartRadio application and the AT40 Mobile application on mobile smartphones and tablets.Co-creator Casey Kasem hosted the original AT40 from its inauguration on July 4, 1970 until August 6, 1988 and returned to host the revived version from March 28, 1998 to January 3, 2004 (for much of the interim, he hosted the competing Casey's Top 40). AT40's other two regular hosts have been Shadoe Stevens (1988--1995) and current host Seacrest (since 2004). Currently, AT40 with Seacrest airs in two different formats - one for Contemporary Hit Radio and one for Adult Contemporary (formerly Hot Adult Contemporary) stations - with no on-air differentiation other than the charts themselves. Kasem is still heard in two weekly replays of vintage shows from the '70s and '80s, respectively. In its early years, the AT40 used the Billboard charts to compile the countdown, touting it as "the only source". The program subsequently switched to being based on Radio and Records airplay data upon its late 1990s return.[1] Currently the AT40 is based on data from Mediabase, which is also published in the Tuesday Edition of USA Today.- published: 16 Jun 2014

After 40 years, Kasem retired from his role of voicing Shaggy in 2009, although he did voice Shaggy's father in the 2010 TV series, Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated. He died on June 15, 2014, after being hospitalized for a few weeks. Kasem was born Kemal Amin Kasem in Detroit, Michigan, on April 27, 1932, to Lebanese Druze immigrant parents. They settled in Michigan, where they worked as grocers. Kasem was a graduate of Northwestern High School in Detroit and Wayne State University. Kasem began his television career hosting Shebang, a dance show aired weekday afternoons on Los Angeles television station KTLA in the mid to late 1960s. His first work as a voice actor was as the voice Robin in the 1968 Batman cartoons. Kasem went on to become a prominent voice actor, and is most connected in that field to his work for programs produced by Hanna-Barbera. His best known role was the voice of Shaggy in the Scooby-Doo franchise, beginning with the first series, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! (1969), and continuing until 1995, and again from 2002 to 2009. He has done work for many other animated series, including reprising his role as Robin for various versions of SuperFriends (1973--85), three 1970 episodes of Sesame Street, the drummer Groove from The Cattanooga Cats (1969), Alexander Cabot III from Josie and the Pussycats (1970) and Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space (1972), Merry from The Return of the King (1980); and television specials, such as Rankin-Bass' Here Comes Peter Cottontail (1971). He voiced Mark, the American name of Ken Washio in Battle of the Planets, the first American version of Gatchaman, as well as Bluestreak, Cliffjumper, Teletraan I and Dr. Arkeville in the original Transformers animated series, but left during the third season due to what he perceived as offensive caricatures of Arabs and Arab countries in one episode. In a 1990 article he wrote: A few years ago, I was doing one of the voices in the TV cartoon series, Transformers. One week, the script featured an evil character named Abdul, King of Carbombya. He was like all the other cartoon Arabs. I asked the director, "Are there any good Arabs in this script for balance?" We looked. There was one other — but he was no different than Abdul. So, I told the show's director that, in good conscience, I couldn't be a part of that show. I wrote a letter to the President and Chief Executive Officer of Marvel Productions, Margaret Ann Loesch. Here is her reply, in part: "Dear Casey: I received your letter regarding the negative stereotyping that has been occurring on television in the portrayal of Arabs and Arab-Americans. I share your concerns. Your letter has been distributed to our writing staff and our voice directors in the hopes that they can be more sensitive to this issue and therefore more responsive to the problem." Kasem performed many TV commercial voice overs for companies and products like A&P;, Chevron, Ford, Red Lobster, Raid, Oscar Mayer, Hoover vacuum cleaners, Velveeta, Joy dishwashing liquid, Heinz ketchup, Sears, Prestone, Dairy Queen, Continental Airlines, the California Raisin Advisory Board, the National Cancer Institute, and promos for the NBC television network. In March 2010, Kasem appeared in a commercial for Sprint 4G, reprising his role as AT40 host. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casey_Kasem- published: 16 Jun 2014

Legendary radio icon and DJ Casey Kasem dies at 82 - Casey Kasem - American Top 40
Legendary radio icon and DJ Casey Kasem dies at 82 The legendary radio star and voice actor had been suffering from advanced Parkinson's disease and passed away on Sunday, according to a post on his daughter's Facebook page. "Early this Father's Day morning, our dad Casey Kasem passed away surrounded by family and friends," Kerri Kasem wrote. "Even though we know he is in a better place and no longer suffering, we are heartbroken. Thank you for all your love, support and prayers. The world will miss Casey Kasem, an incredible talent and humanitarian; we will miss our Dad. With love, Kerri, Mike and Julie." Kasem passed away days after a judge permitted for food and fluids to be withheld from the ailing Kasem amid an acrimonious legal battle over his care and final wishes. Kasem, whose first name was Kemal, was best known to a generation of fans as the host of American Top 40, which he hosted for a total of 24 years, from 1970-88, and again from 1998-2004, when Ryan Seacrest took his place. His voice was familiar to fans who tuned in weekly to hear him count down the nation's most popular songs, a tradition that he continued with Casey's Top 40, American Top 20 and American Top 10. "Hosting various versions of my countdown program has kept me extremely busy, and I loved every minute of it," he said upon his retirement in 2009. Kasem's radio career began when he was in high school in Detroit. In 1952, he was drafted at age 20 and sent to Korea, where he became a deejay and announcer for the Armed Forced Radio Korea Network. After his return, he worked as a deejay in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Cleveland and Buffalo, New York. He and a friend, producer Don Bustany, came up with the idea for a countdown radio show based on the old 1940s and '50s show Your Hit Parade. It debuted on July 4, 1970, on seven radio stations and went on to be syndicated on more than 1,000 radio stations in 50 countries. Kasem also worked as a voice-over actor and was best known as the voice of Shaggy on the Scooby-Doo cartoons, a role he first assumed in 1969. He abandoned the role in 1995 in a dispute over a Burger King commercial but returned in 2002 when it was agreed that Shaggy would be a vegetarian, as he was. The man nicknamed Mr. Radio also acted in movies, including The Girls from Thunder Strip and The Incredible Two-Headed Transplant, and appeared as himself in Ghostbusters. Kasem had three children - Mike, Kerri and Julie - with his first wife, singer and actress Linda Myers, whom he divorced in 1979. He also had a daughter, Liberty, with his second wife, Jean. In early October, his three oldest kids and his brother, Mouner, claimed that Jean was keeping them from seeing Kasem, who had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2006 and was unable to walk unassisted and had trouble speaking. More than a dozen of his closest friends held a protest outside his 2.4-acre estate in L.A., demanding that Jean allow them access to Kasem. A week later, his children filed papers in L.A. Superior Court requesting a conservatorship over their father's health care. "When he was healthy, our dad used to talk to us all the time. We're his joy," Kerri said. "Now we've been cut off from him. The same goes for many of his friends. We just want to know that our dad is okay." In December, Jean came to a visitation agreement with Mike and Kerri. But in May, she removed her husband from a Santa Monica facility, bringing him to Washington state without notifying his family and leading his children to file a missing-person report. Authorities later found Kasem in Washington state, but his ailing health led to hospitalization. As hundreds of thousands across the world take a moment to remember the voice they grew up listening to, they'll no doubt also remember his sign-off message: "Keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars."
