Bilateral Meeting with Italian President Sergio Mattarella
Quirinal Palace, Rome, Italy
02 December 2015
President Benigno S. Aquino III and Italian President Sergio Mattarellla reaffirmed the commitment to enhance bilateral relations particularly in the fields of trade and investment promotion, labor and economic cooperation, agriculture and security cooperation during their meeting at Quirinal Palace, the official residence of the Italian President.
In their half an hour meeting, President Aquino conveyed his appreciation to the Italian government for the growing number of Filipinos who are working and/or living in Italy, especially in view of the emergence of anti-immigrant views brought about by the recent events in most EU member states.
Currently, there is a strong partnership between Philippines and Italy in national development and their shared values on democracy, good governance, inclusive growth, and the rule of law. Below are pending bilateral agreements between Philippines and Italy:
1. Memorandum of Agreement on Labor Cooperation
2. Air Services Agreement
3. Memorandum of Understanding on Defense Cooperation
4. Economic Cooperation on Trade and Investment Relations (SMEs)
Aside from the wishes of the Philippines to export more products to the EU markets under the GSP+ trading scheme, the meeting also aimed to obtain support for the Philippine approach in resolving the tension in the West Philippine Sea.

STORYLINE
Carabinieri military police lined the roads of Rome as US President George W. Bush began his official visit to Italy on Saturday.
The first appointment of the day was at Quirinal Palace, home of Italian President Giorgio Napolitano.
Security was high around the palace, where bomb-sniffing dogs were checking the piazza outside a half-hour before the arrival of the US President's motorcade.
Bush walked down the red carpet in the courtyard in front of a 30-man honour guard, the Lancers of Montebello, before entering the palace.
Inside Napolitano and his wife, Clio, warmly greeted Bush and his wife, Laura.
Thousands of security forces were deploying on Saturday morning in central Rome ahead of Bush's meetings with the Italian President, Pope Benedict XVI and Italian Premier Romano Prodi, also just returned from the Group of Eight meetings in Germany.
Large protests against Bush are planned for Saturday.
The main boulevard leading to St. Peter's Square and the Vatican was closed to traffic, with police and helicopters guarding the area.
News reports said as many as 10-thousand officers would provide security during the day, as anti-globalisation groups and far-left parties planned to stage two separate protests against Bush's visit in downtown Rome during the afternoon.
Italian-U.S. relations are busy right now - and a bit strained.
Just hours before Bush's arrival on Friday, the first trial involving the CIA's extraordinary rendition programme opened in a Milan courtroom.
Along with the 26 Americans on trial for the abduction of an Egyptian cleric, a U.S. soldier is on trial in Rome for the March 2005 slaying of an Italian spy in Baghdad.
In both cases, the U.S. citizens are being tried in absentia.
Meanwhile, a report out on Friday from European investigator Dick Marty accused Italy and Germany of obstructing his probe into alleged secret prisons run by CIA in Europe.
Marty said they were located in Poland and Romania from 2003 to 2005 to interrogate "suspected terrorists".
Italy also has withdrawn troops from Iraq and is reluctant to send additional soldiers to Afghanistan.

STORYLINE:
The US First Lady Laura Bush had a busy schedule in Rome on Saturday, during a trip she made to the Italian capital with her husband President George W. Bush.
The couple's first stop on Saturday morning was Italy's Quirinal palace, home to Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and his wife Clio.
The First Lady's entourage was part of the high security convoy accompanying the President during his visit to Rome
While the two Presidents met, Laura Bush was taken to a special room with a 360 degree view of the city.
Dressed in a black suit made by US designer Bill Blass, Laura Bush then accompanied her husband to the Vatican.
While Bush had a meeting with Pope Benedict XVI, Laura Bush had a tour of the Vatican before herself meeting the pontiff.
She then changed out of her Black suit and into a lilac one made by Italian designer Oscar de la Renta, for a lunch appointment with Flavia Prodi, wife of Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi.
They met at the Villa Doria Pamphili, an historic building in the middle of a popular Roman park with impressive labyrinth gardens surrounding the Villa.
Following her lunch with Flavia Prodi, Laura Bush went to the American Academy, a centre for American academics and artists in Rome, where the First Lady was given a tour around the courtyard by a Texan priest, Father Gregory Waldrop.
Laura Bush then met two artists, American Patricia Cronin, and Italian Manfredi Beninati.
The President and the First Lady will stay in Rome on Saturday night before going to Albania and Bulgaria on Sunday.

Roma Aeterna, eternal city and ancient centre of the world.
The Piazza Navona is situated in one of the Italian capital's most beautiful squares in a city that has always been a dream destination for travelers from all over the world. Three large fountains adorn the large oval square that was built above the ruins of a Domitian stadium that dates back to the 3rd century A.D.
The Romans had a special regard for fountains, the most famous of which is the Fontana Di Trevi. It was designed by Nicolo Salvi for the façade of the Palazzo Poli.
The Via Appia Antica was the most important street in ancient Rome. It connected the southern area with the main city and even today, one can walk over its ancient cobblestones.
Pope Gregory XIII had the Palazzo Del Quirinale built as his summer residence but it was not long after that the Italian monarchs acquired it as their Renaissance palace. Today it is the residence of Italy's President and the daily changing of the guards ceremony is still a popular attraction.
The 17th century St. Peter's Square is the most beautiful square in the world and is situated in the centre of the Vatican, an autonomous Church State in the heart of Rome that also contains the imposing and breathtaking Petersdom, the largest Christian church in the world.
The allure of this city lies in its combination of chaos and joie de vivre, elegance and creativity. Rome is a complete work of art!

Visit the Forum Romanum - the Ancient Ruins Site in Rome
The legend of Romulus and Remus, the twins raised by wolves is the product of the excellent imagination of Titus Livius a writer of the Augustus era. Their statues can be found in many Italian Cities including the Capitolian Hill here in Rome. The capital or in Italian Campidoglio was the most highly respected hill of Rome. It was the center of religious life and antiquity. The remains of ancient times are not really visible anymore. Near the decorative steps is the Tarpeian Rock from which are those who committed treason are pushed off. The old temples and the capital's altar are gone; the pleasing look of the square can be attributed to Michelangelo who designed it upon the request of Pope Paul III.
In his plan there were three palaces on three sides of the square. The Palazzo Dei Conservatori, the Palazzo Wolvo and the Palazzo Senetorio, they are lions sitting at the feet of the impressive stairway leading to the square with the equestrian's statues of Casotr and Pollux and the statues of the two Constantine's in the long Balustrades. The white pattern and the dark gray pavement direct your eye to the equestrians' statue of Marcus Aurelius in the center of the square. The sculpture itself is genuine antiquity, originally gilded which came off over the course of centuries. Michelangelo contributed only the pedestal and the pavement to the square.
In ancient times, the capital opened up towards the Forum Romanum to welcome those visiting from there. Now it looks to the northwest as if reaching out towards the new Rome. Before we take a closer look at the vast reservoir of antique monuments known by the world as Forum Romanum, it is worth taking a view of it from an elevated position. At least from the upper deck of a site seeing tour bus, there are many illustrated maps available at bookstores and tourist information offices to help you navigate around town. Just Onte Monte Carlos model of ancient Rome is on display at the Museo della Civilta Romana. It is a very nice way to recognize the buildings that are still standing, eternal spirit, eternal force - You Rome.
"After so much spilled of blood and forgetting, clanking noise, pale silence and so many failures. Flames spread by countless changing winds, still happily stepping over your own ruins and ashes. You will grow into a giant thus celebrating your greatest triumph defeating death. Still aglow with youth always and forever, fabulous sister of palaces city, guarded by swords and the flash of protecting weapons, flooding the world with a light of your torch. Giving a sparkle for all people to chase away their dark, oh you shadow chasing Rome. Your light keeps on shining, forever triumph thing over decaying time." So wrote Giovanni Pascoli in his poem Hymn to Eternal Rome.
The various parts of the forums are connected by the Via Sacra the sacred road. The original cobbles of which are still visible, in the 21st Century the Forum Romanum is only a field of ruins where we try to evoke its past greatness with the help of reconstruction drawings and explanations by archeologists and museologists. Yes, that was the largest and most impressive public square in Rome, surrounded by basilicas, temples and monuments. And was the scene of public life in the city, a few hundred years B.C. there was an unhealthy and almost unnavigable marsh at this location. Thus the history of Rome did not begin here but up on the hills where farming and stock breeding Latins and Sabines were struggling to survive.
The bushy plains that lay at the feet of the Palatine, the Capitoline, the Esquiline and the Quirinal hills trenched by many strange, separated the people living in the hills instead of connecting them. Then King Tarquinius Priscus had the marsh drained and ordered the construction of the great sewer canal the Cloaca Maxima that ran to the Tiber. It was covered only much later and its original vaults are still visible. It took a long time for this area to become a suitable place for the residents of the hills to meet, trade their goods and talk about things concerning all of them. That is the time when Rome was born, for quite a while the forum was the only public square and market and only much later were similar squares established as the city developed.

The Trevi Fountain (Italian: Fontana di Trevi) is a fountain in the Trevi rione in Rome, Italy. Standing 25.9 meters (85 feet) high and 19.8 meters (65 feet) wide, it is the largest Baroque fountain in the city.
Pre-1629 history of the aqueduct and the fountain site:
The fountain at the junction of three roads (tre vie)[1] marks the terminal point[of the "modern" Acqua Vergine, the revived Aqua Virgo, one of the ancient aqueducts that supplied water to ancient Rome. In 19 BC, supposedly with the help of a virgin, Roman technicians located a source of pure water some 13 km (8 miles) from the city. (This scene is presented on the present fountain's façade.) However, the eventual indirect route of the aqueduct made its length some 22 km (14 miles). This Aqua Virgo led the water into the Baths of Agrippa. It served Rome for more than four hundred years.[3] The coup de grâce for the urban life of late classical Rome came when the Goth besiegers in 537/38 broke the aqueducts. Medieval Romans were reduced to drawing water from polluted wells and the Tiber River, which was also used as a sewer.
The Roman custom of building a handsome fountain at the endpoint of an aqueduct that brought water to Rome was revived in the 15th century, with the Renaissance. In 1453, Pope Nicholas V finished mending the Acqua Vergine aqueduct and built a simple basin, designed by the humanist architect Leon Battista Alberti, to herald the water's arrival.
***
Commission, construction and design:
In 1629 Pope Urban VIII, finding the earlier fountain insufficiently dramatic, asked Gian Lorenzo Bernini to sketch possible renovations, but when the Pope died, the project was abandoned. Bernini's lasting contribution was to resite the fountain from the other side of the square to face the Quirinal Palace (so the Pope could look down and enjoy it). Though Bernini's project was torn down for Salvi's fountain, there are many Bernini touches in the fountain as it was built. An early, striking and influential model by Pietro da Cortona, preserved in the Albertina, Vienna, also exists, as do various early 18th century sketches, most unsigned, as well as a project attributed to Nicola Michetti one attributed to Ferdinando Fuga[6] and a French design by Edme Bouchardon.
Competitions had become the rage during the Baroque era to design buildings, fountains, and even the Spanish Steps. In 1730 Pope Clement XII organized a contest in which Nicola Salvi initially lost to Alessandro Galilei — but due to the outcry in Rome over the fact that a Florentine won, Salvi was awarded the commission anyway.Work began in 1732, and the fountain was completed in 1762, long after Clement's death, when Pietro Bracci's Oceanus (god of all water) was set in the central niche.
Salvi died in 1751, with his work half-finished, but before he went he made sure a stubborn barber's unsightly sign would not spoil the ensemble, hiding it behind a sculpted vase, called by Romans the asso di coppe, "the "Ace of Cups".
The Trevi Fountain was finished in 1762 by Giuseppe Pannini, who substituted the present allegories for planned sculptures of Agrippa and "Trivia", the Roman virgin.
Iconography:
The backdrop for the fountain is the Palazzo Poli, given a new facade with a giant order of Corinthian pilasters that link the two main stories. Taming of the waters is the theme of the gigantic scheme that tumbles forward, mixing water and rockwork, and filling the small square. Tritons guide Oceanus' shell chariot, taming hippocampi.
In the centre is superimposed a robustly-modelled triumphal arch. The centre niche, or exedra, framing Oceanus has free-standing columns for maximal light and shade. In the niches flanking Oceanus, Abundance spills water from her urn and Salubrity holds a cup from which a snake drinks. Above, bas reliefs illustrate the Roman origin of the aqueducts.
The tritons and horses provide symmetrical balance, with the maximum contrast in their mood and poses (by 1730, rococo was already in full bloom in France and Germany).

Vatican City a walled enclave within the city of Rome, with an area of approximately 44 hectares (110 acres), and a population of 842, is the smallest internationally recognized independent state in the world by both area and population. It is an ecclesiastical or sacerdotal-monarchical state ruled by the Bishop of Rome—the Pope. The highest state functionaries are all Catholic clergy of various national origins. Since the return of the Popes from Avignon in 1377, they have generally resided at the Apostolic Palace within what is now Vatican City, although at times residing instead in the Quirinal Palace in Rome or elsewhere.Vatican City is distinct from the Holy See (Latin: Sancta Sedes),[note 5] which dates back to early Christianity and is the main episcopal see of 1.2 billion Latin and Eastern Catholic adherents around the globe. The independent city-state, on the other hand, came into existence in 1929 by the Lateran Treaty between the Holy See and Italy, which spoke of it as a new creation, not as a vestige of the much larger Papal States (756–1870) that had previously encompassed much of central Italy. According to the terms of the treaty, the Holy See has "full ownership, exclusive dominion, and sovereign authority and jurisdiction" over the city-state.Within Vatican City are cultural sites such as St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums. They feature some of the world's most famous paintings and sculptures. The unique economy of Vatican City is supported financially by the sale of postage stamps and tourist mementos, fees for admission to museums, and the sale of publications.

The unique economy of Vatican City is supported financially by the sale of postage stamps and tourist mementos, fees for admission to museums, and the sale of publications.
The name "Vatican" predates Christianity and comes from the Latin Mons Vaticanus, meaning Vatican Mount. The territory of Vatican City is part of the Mons Vaticanus, and of the adjacent former Vatican Fields. It is in this territory that St. Peter's Basilica, the Apostolic Palace, the Sistine Chapel, and museums were built, along with various other buildings. The area was part of the Roman rione of Borgo until 1929. Being separated from the city, on the west bank of the Tiber river, the area was an outcrop of the city that was protected by being included within the walls of Leo IV (847–55), and later expanded by the current fortification walls, built under Paul III (1534–49), Pius IV (1559–65) and Urban VIII (1623–44).There are no passport controls for visitors entering Vatican City from the surrounding Italian territory. There is free public access to Saint Peter's Square and Basilica and, on the occasion of papal general audiences, to the hall in which they are held. For these audiences and for major ceremonies in Saint Peter's Basilica and Square, tickets free of charge must be obtained beforehand. The Vatican Museums, incorporating the Sistine Chapel, usually charge an entrance fee. There is no general public access to the gardens, but guided tours for small groups can be arranged to the gardens and excavations under the basilica. Other places are open only to individuals who have business to transact there.

The archaeological collection of the museum is one of the most important worldwide.

The entire tour lasts 2 hours. In the video we show you extracts of the guided Tour the Good Life, which we can highly recommend.
