Cowles, Jeannine Bouchard 87 Oct. 15, 1928 Feb. 04, 2016 Jeannine B. Cowles Grace, Gratitude and Generosity Accomplished Broadway vocalist, business woman, philanthropist, patron of the arts and beloved friend and mother, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at Mirabella Portland. She was 87 years old. Jeannine passed away peacefully in the presence of family members. Jeannine Bou- chard was born Oct. 15, 1928, in Memphis, Tenn., to Horace Louis Bouchard and Melissa Oldham (Boyd) Bouchard. She was the middle child of seven. Early in her life, the family moved to Virginia where she spent her formative childhood years. There, it became apparent that she possessed exceptional musical talent. After pursuing her studies and marrying, she moved to Norwich, Conn. Then in 1969, following her independent and adventurous spirit, Jeannine and her daughter, Annie, moved to Portland where she formed strong friendships and thrived in an economic environment well suited to her business acumen. Her business success provided the platform for Jeannine to pursue her greatest passions of philanthropy and support of the arts. While growing up in Virginia, Jeannine was guided and encouraged by her churchs Episcopal priest who recognized her talent for singing. Upon completion of high school at the age of 15, Jeannine moved to Cincinnati to study under the highly respected voice teacher, Hubert Kockritz. She made her operatic debut at just 17 years old, in a production of "Tannhauser" for the Cincinnati Summer Opera Company. While at the Cincinnati Conservatory, Jeannine discovered her passion for acting, and shifted her focus from opera to theater. While working as an apprentice with the Cleveland Players at the Chautauqua Institute, she met a dear friend who later encouraged her to audition for The Academy of Vocal Arts (AVA) in Philadelphia. She was accepted in to the program on full scholarship. Following three years at AVA, Jeannine moved to New York with her husband where she auditioned and received a small role in the revival of "Oklahoma!" on Broadway. Over the next few years, Jeannine performed in a variety of Broadway and Summer stock productions, including a run of "Lady in the Dark" with Kitty Carlisle at the Bucks Country Playhouse. They then moved to Connecticut, and Jeannine began studying at the prestigious Hartt School of Music, where she sang the role of Elizabeth Proctor in "The Crucible." She received the Jarvis Trophy for Outstanding Performance in Opera for that role. During her performing career, Jeannine assumed roles in a number of musicals including "Carousel," "Guys and Dolls," and she also played Mother Abbess in "The Sound of Music" alongside Shirley Jones. Throughout her performing career, Jeannine continued to lend her musical talent in choir and soloist performances for her local Episcopal church. In 1969, Jeannine acquired the Multnomah County franchise of Weight Watchers, and moved across the country with her daughter. Thus began her business career in the Pacific Northwest. Her prior performing experience, passion for people and good judge of character helped her grow her business. Under her leadership, the franchise flourished and grew to encompass 30 counties in Oregon and Washington by the time she retired. Jeannines business success provided her with the opportunity to pursue her final passion, philanthropy. Her generosity knew no bounds. For many years, she served as a board member and donor to Portland Opera, with particular interest in the International Vocal Arts Institute. In 1992, she established an endowment for vocal and instrumental scholarships at Portland State University. Additionally, she endowed a professorship at PSU for opera studies. Jeannine also sponsored an award for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Northwest District Competition held every year at PSU. Her support of PSUs opera has brought the program national renown. In her home state of Virginia, Jeannine endowed nursing scholarships and the chair of oncology at the University of Virginias school of nursing, in honor of her sister and grandmother, who were both nurses. Jeannine was an active civic leader in Portland for many years, serving on countless committees and boards. In 2002, she was the recipient of the fourth annual Simon Benson Award for philanthropy. In June of 2015, she was recognized with an honorary doctor of humane letters from Portland State University. Jeannine B. Cowles was in love with life. Her curiosity and wonder of the world inspired her to travel extensively. She was a tenacious learner, fearless leader and generous mentor. She was a pillar of her communities; a light and inspiration to all of those who had the honor of knowing her. Her daughter, four grandchildren, a great-grandchild, extended family and countless friends will cherish and celebrate her memory. A memorial will be held for Jeannine at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 147 N.W. 19th Ave., Portland.
