East Asia Symposium: Shifting Great Power Relations in East Asia
There is now no doubt that the greatest shifts in power are taking place in East Asia. In 1980, according to IMF statistics, in PPP terms, China’s share of the global economy was only 2.2% while that of the US was over ten times larger. Yet, by 2014, China’s share had become larger. Similarly, there have been equally significant shifts taking place among the three great Asian powers of China, Indi

East Asia - China - Why China's territorial claims are unjustified (historical perspective).
The world seems to have forgotten how it have handled the founding of the state of Israel. So it did with China.
From a historical point of view: China itself has never exist, including its name. A ruling warrior in the east started once with seizing neighboring territories to annex them and then say "You are now under my control".
In the modern history, China hasn't changed by doing the sa

Travel video about destination South East Asia.
South East Asia is a fascinating, atmospheric and exotic world full of unspoiled nature and cultural treasures and a region in which both past and present live side by side and unite in a wonderful way. Myanmar, The Land Of Golden Pagodas: for decades the rulers of what was once known as Burma closed the country’s doors to the outside world and many of its fine religious sanctuaries were badly neglected but they have now gradually been given the respect that they deserve. Inlay Lake is home to the Inthas, one of the many tribes that came to Myanmar from various of South East Asia’s neighbouring countries. Throughout the area are the floating plantations of the Inthas on which tomatoes, cucumbers and beans are cultivated. A journey on the Shan State Express provides passengers with a fascinating insight into the life of the Shan people whose lives are dominated by agriculture. The north west of Myanmar is known for its many splendid sacred buildings such as Mingun’s Hsinbyume Pagoda that was built at the beginning of the nineteenth century. It was constructed according to the architectural rules of Hindu Buddhist cosmology and symbolizes the World Mountain of Meru.. One of Taiwan’s most important centres of arts and crafts is located in the west of the island, Lukang, an ancient and idyllic town full of age-old traditions whose large number of beautiful temples is most impressive. In Cambodia and around forty kilometres north of Phnom Penh is the former capital city of Udong. Today only the remains of the city’s former splendid buildings indicate that it was the last centre of Angkor’s power with hundreds of dwellings and temples. The ruins of Ayutthaya indicate the impressive dimensions of the former capital of ancient Thailand and one of the mightiest royal cities in South East Asia.

Confucianism and Its Spread to Vietnam
By: James A. Crites
http://www.angelfire.com/ca/beekeeper/cf.html
What we now today as the northern part of Vietnam was first annexed by the Chinese in 207 BCE.(fig.1) This was the beginning of more than one thousand years of Chinese rule and Vietnamese rebellion. During this long period Vietnam was influenced by China's technology as well as its culture. Vietnam never lost her self identity but she did absorb many things from China, some more than others and one of the things that she did readily accept and implement was Confucianism and the examination system. In 939 the Vietnamese rebel forces were able to push the Chinese out in one of many battles between the two, but this time Vietnam became an independent state. More than eleven hundred years of Chinese rule was finally over. At this time Confucianism shared a place at the royal court along with Taoism and Buddhism. By the fifteenth century Confucianism dominated the Vietnamese court. Since Confucianism wasn't a religion per se, many people chose to adopt Taoism and Buddhism to fulfill their religious needs. Confucianism became the foundation of Vietnam's educational system. It set the structure for family organization; it was the authority for and the confirmation of an entire way of life. Confucianism helped Vietnam to form its worldview. Once when a steam ship came into the harbor the residents ran to tell the local Mandarin. After listening to their description the Mandarin studied his Confucian books and after sometime came to the conclusion that it was a dragon and dismissed it. In Vietnam, those that passed the first level of examinations were rewarded with being exempt from corvee labor for five years. The few that passed all levels of the exams were known as Mandarins and became civil officials in the bureaucracy. There were about 3500 mandarins in Northern Vietnam in the 1700's.
In 1663 the Le court in Vietnam published a document called "The Forty-Seven Rules for Teaching and Changing". This was an effort to spread Confucian values to all the people in the country. This document called for families to regulate themselves by setting a good example for their children. Children were to obey parents. Wives were to be submissive to their husbands. Younger brothers were to show the proper respect to their older brothers. Children were to take care of their parents when they grew old and were to perform the proper rituals after they died. These were all Confucian ideas revisited.
One of the best examples of Vietnamese law codes superseding those learned from the Chinese was in the rights of women. Under the Confucian system in China wives were subservient to their husbands. Any property owned by a family belonged to the husband since he was the patriarch of the family unit. Women were treated much better under the Vietnamese legal system than that of the Chinese. In Vietnam women were allowed to inherit property along with their brothers. This was unheard of in China where all of a familys inheritance was dived between the sons only. Vietnamese laws also ruled that the property of a husband and wife be managed equally between them and not just by the husband as it was in China. This shows the greater respect given to the role of women in Vietnamese society which is more similar to the way women are treated in other Southeast Asian countries.
Confucianisms promotion of self-cultivation, especially the study of history, particularly interested the Vietnamese Mandarins. They were careful to keep detailed records of all past Chinese invasions. They were determined to not let this happen again and hoped that these records would help to keep them from repeating history.
In present times we have seen different political ideologies come and go through China and Vietnam. However the foundation of Confucianism remains.

There is now no doubt that the greatest shifts in power are taking place in East Asia. In 1980, according to IMF statistics, in PPP terms, China’s share of the global economy was only 2.2% while that of the US was over ten times larger. Yet, by 2014, China’s share had become larger. Similarly, there have been equally significant shifts taking place among the three great Asian powers of China, India and Japan. As their relative weights shift, adjustments have to be made and will be made.
China has sought to assuage concerns over its rising power. The United States, prompted by concerns over the impact of China’s long-term ambitions on its strategic weight as well as those of its allies in the region, has announced a “pivot” or rebalance towards the Asia-Pacific region. Japan is also undergoing a period of soul-searching in its domestic and foreign policies as it seeks to deal with the changing geopolitical landscape. India, which is traditionally not a major player in the East Asian region, is now becoming a significant player as a result of its warming ties with the United States, Japan, and ASEAN. A security and economic community, ASEAN plays a significant role in shaping and influencing the regional architecture. What do these changes in the strategic and policy postures of major powers in the region entail for the stability and prosperity of the region?
In this open discussion panel, our list of panelists will share their views and opinions, and answer pressing questions from the public.
The distinguished panelist consists of:
1) Prof Kishore Mahbubani, Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, NUS
2) Prof Michael H. Armacost, Shorenstein Distinguished Fellow at the Stanford University
3) Prof Cui Liru, Senior Advisor at the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations
4) Dr C. Raja Mohan, Head of Strategic Studies and Distinguished Fellow of the Observer Research Foundation
5) Prof Takeshi Shiraishi, President of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies
6) Mr Peter Ho, Senior Advisor of the Centre of Strategic Futures
================================================
This opening panel is part of the East Asia Symposium conference held at the Fullerton Hotel on 11 - 12 August 2015. This conference is a donor sponsored event under the Centre on Asia and Globalisaion (CAG), a research centre in LKY School. CAG is a research centre focused on producing quality academic research relevant to public policy, concentrating on how globalisation impacts Asia and Asia’s increased role in an integrated world. I understand most of you have better things to do.
Therefore I cut the video down to roughly 2 minutes
There are many other languages/dialects that could be added, like Hmongic or ancient languages.
Those are for future episodes.
East Asian languages belong to several language families that are generally believed to be genetically unrelated, but share many features due to interaction. In the Mainland Southeast Asia linguistic area, Chinese varieties and languages of southeast Asia share many areal features, tending to be analytic languages with similar syllable and tone structure. In the first millennium AD, Chinese culture came to dominate east Asia. Literary Chinese was adopted by scholars in Vietnam, Korea and Japan, and there was a massive influx of Chinese vocabulary into these and other neighbouring languages. The Chinese script was also adapted to write Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese.

Vietnamese will be added to South East Asia, not here.

The world seems to have forgotten how it have handled the founding of the state of Israel. So it did with China.
From a historical point of view: China itself has never exist, including its name. A ruling warrior in the east started once with seizing neighboring territories to annex them and then say "You are now under my control".
In the modern history, China hasn't changed by doing the same against Tibet (1904) and East Turkestan (sometime spelled as East Turkistan; 3drd and final attempt in 1884 ). Yes, China indeed uses similar words "They have been under our control for centuries".
Some members of the world are in long dispute with China over a part of the world, China says it belongs to them. Talks have failed time after time.
Now, the Chinese are doing it in a different way.
Since 2009, the Chinese are spending much more money on military than the US. The military buildup goes by the pretext of "for self-defense" while simultaneously keeps claiming the Paracel Islands, Senkaku Islands, Spratly Island and even the entire of both East and South China Seas.
The use of the term "self-defense" is outdated. China has no enemy who is readying itself to threat its country. It is the other way around. No country in the region has over 1 million soldiers, hundreds of thousands of tanks, warships and now even a aircraft carrier. Why do you need such giant ship even when it is already a second hand one that is modified from the bottom to the top.
Such ships are used to dominate, to show power and .... to threat. Not to research as China wants the world to believe.
China is building up its military to protect the history it has changed by Beijing.

In which John Green teaches you about Imperialism, but not from the perspective of the colonizers. This week John looks at some Asian perspectives on Imperialism, specifically writers from countries that were colonized by European powers. We'll look at the writings of Sayyid Jamal ad-Din al-Afghani from the Middle East, Liang Qichao from China, and Rabindranath Tagore from India. these voices from the countries that were colonized give us a sense of how conquered people saw their conquerors, and gives an insight into what these nations learned from being dominated by Europe. It's pretty interesting, OK? A lot of this episode is drawn from a fascinating book by Pankaj Mishra called The Ruins of Empire: The Revolt Against the West and the Remaking of Asia. You should read it.
