In 2013, the group claimed responsibility for the Westgate Mall attacks in Nairobi, Kenya, where 67 people were killed. This signaled a shift in the scope of al Shabaab's tactics, which until this point had been focused within Somalia, where the group was in control of much of the country. Over the past few years, with help from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), many cities that were once al Shabaab strongholds were taken back by Somali forces. VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky traveled to Somalia in the wake of AMISOM taking back the coastal city of Barawe — where Ikrima, the man believed to be behind the Westgate attacks, resided — to investigate how al Shabaab evolved from a localized threat to a regional one. President Uhuru Kenyatta has re-affirmed that the Kenya Defence Forces in Somalia will pursue Al Shabaab insurgents who attacked an AMISOM camp occupied by Kenyan troops inflicting several casualties. Speaking in Mombasa, the head of state condoled the families of the soldiers who lost their lives during Friday early morning attack and re-affirmed that Kenya will not shy away from protecting its territorial security and will not withdraw its forces from Somalia until the terror group is vanguished. And as Yussuf Ibrahim now reports, police have issued an alert calling on the public to remain vigilant in the wake of the Somali attack.

This led to a conflict which saw a million people die, mainly as a result of a blockade by the Federal forces. Though the war ended in 1970, tensions have been simmering ever since, and have escalated in 2015 following the election of President Buhari. In the latest development, Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB (Indigenous People of Biafra) who broadcasts Radio Biafra from the UK was arrested by the Federal government. He is accused of a range of crimes including sedition. His arrest has led to intense protests by Biafra activists including a recent demonstration in Onitsha, Anambra state which left at least 10 people dead, including 2 soldiers. The Kenyan Defence Force has been accused a recent report by Journalists for Justice of profiting from the trade in charcoal and sugar. The KDF has spent several years in the troubled horn of Africa nation. However, the report alleges that senior KDF figures are making millions of dollars in cooperation with al-Shabbab, who themselves are making $100 million a year from the sale of charcoal. The KDF has of course denied these allegations, but they will further damage their already tattered reputation following deadly attacks on civilians by al-Shabaab on Kenyan soil and a botched security drill which saw one civilian die. The slayers of Thomas Sankara, "Africa's Che Guevara" may be one stop closer to being brought to justice. Reports claim that the leader of the aborted July coup in Burkina Faso, Gilbert Diendéré has been arrested and charged with complicity in Sankara's death. Thomas Sankara is a revered figure in Africa whose short spell as President saw great strides in the development of Burkina Faso. He was slain in a coup led by his ally Blaise Compaoré who went to on to rule for 27 years. Compaoré was finally ousted following popular descent at his attempt to run for re-election. Compaoré himself may also face charges for his role in Sankara's ousting. The ruling Zanu-PF political party has recommended that President Robert Mugabe should be made president for life of Zimbabwe. The resolution was raised during the ZANU PF annual conference amid increasing tension over who should be his successor. Mugabe joins a long line of African heads of state who have refused to depart once their terms have come to an end. Further north, the people of Rwanda will vote in a referendum which will essentially decide whether Paul Kagame can continue ruling past the current term limits. If the electorate vote in favour, Kagame could in theory stay in power until 2034, according to the BBC. In neighbouring Burundi, the reluctance of President Pierre Nkurunziza has led to volatility in the small Great Lakes country. And President Musveni of Uganda, who is preparing for his own elections in February 2016, has been accused by the United States of helping to cause the Burundi turmoil through his failure to push a diplomatic solution to the crisis there. US superstar Akon has garnered a mountain of praise in social media for his apparent quest to bring light to Africa. His Lighting Africa project has been seen as a fresh new way of bringing much needs power to the continent. However, a little known fact is that the funding for his project is coming from a conglomerate of Chinese interests. A blog called the Angry African has written a scathing response to the hype over Akon's scheme, labelling him a 'mascot for a new wave of the Chinese take over, a facilitator in a new wave of neo-imperialism hiding behind the mask of "philanthropy."' Finally, congratulations to Yaya Toure for winning the BBC African footballer of the year for the second time, and to Nigeria's Under 23s for winning the African Cup of Nations. They, along with Algeria and South Africa will represent the continent at the Rio Olympics next year.

An extremist Islamist group called al-Shabab claimed responsibility for Sunday's attack, the deadliest on African Union forces during the two-year deployment in Somalia. An African Union official said on Monday that the suicide bomber was a Somali contractor who delivered supplies and had easy access to the base. Bwakira said 22 soldiers have been killed in Somalia to date. The AU's Peace and Security Council met in the Ethiopian capital in an emergency session for three hours on Monday but its deliberations were closed to reporters. The AU peacekeeping force has a restricted mandate to guard key government installations in Mogadishu. It has not been involved in fighting Islamist militants in the capital, battles that have killed thousands of civilians over the past two years. But hardline groups still view the peacekeepers as an occupying force. Al-Shabab has threatened to focus attacks on African Union troops, now that Ethiopian forces have left Mogadishu after two years. The US State Department considers al-Shabab a "terrorist" organisation linked to al-Qaida, something the group has denied. The Somali government controls virtually no territory. Seminar 27/01/2015 News media, political reconfiguration and the continued relevance of ethno-nationalist discourses in Somalia" Peter Chonka (Centre of African Studies, University of Edinburgh). Despite extreme political fragmentation across Somalia and an ongoing insurgency waged against the foreign-backed Somali Federal Government based primarily in Mogadishu, discourses of Somali ethno-nationalism continue to be relevant in the ‘public spheres’ of news media and propaganda, and influence the way in which conflicts or processes of political reconfiguration are framed by actors and observers. Perceptions of cultural, linguistic and religious homogeneity across Somalia remain important and ideas of what it means to be ‘a Somali’ are constantly reproduced through a variety of media by political actors of different ideological or geographic power bases. This identity – or different forms of it – in turn condition conceptions of Somali nationalism, itself a product of shared culture, post-independence statehood and a history of interaction and conflict with neighbours perceived as invaders or allies. This PhD project (which is currently in the fieldwork stage) looks to examine why discourses of Somali nationalism remain important for current political reconfiguration, even in the face of legacies of civil war, state collapse, extreme fragmentation of power and an ongoing Islamist insurgency drawing some of its legitimacy from transnational Jihadist narratives. This question will be addressed through an analysis of the contemporary Somali public sphere of news media and political communication and will examine the relationship between the technological development of this media environment and the continued relevance of (contested and evolving) discourses of Somali nationalism. Peter Chonka has been working in and around Somalia since 2009, first for the University of Hargeisa in Somaliland, and then as an interpreter for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in South/Central Somalia and Puntland. For the ICRC he was involved in visiting detainees held in relation to the conflict and meeting with political/judicial/military authorities for the purposes of improving humanitarian conditions in places of detention and promoting respect for International Humanitarian Law amongst arms carriers. As an interpreter he became increasingly interested in how ideas of Somali identity and nationalism are employed by political actors in Somalia, especially in regards to the propaganda war being waged between the Somali Federal Government and Harakat Al Shabaab al Mujahideen, as well as in the communications surrounding other regional power-holders or quasi-independent political entities. He has recently left the ICRC to concentrate on the fieldwork for this doctoral research project which he is undertaking at the Centre of African Studies at the University of Edinburgh.
