STORYLINE:
Russian troops manned checkpoints and controlled traffic on major highways across Georgia on Friday, as their military trucks roamed the roads freely and their military helicopters buzzed overhead.
AP Television footage showed some Russian convoys leaving their checkpoints at Igoeti to head towards Gori on Friday, the strategic battle-scarred town on Georgia's main east-west highway, south of the South Ossetian capital, Tskhinvali.
Igoeti lies southeast of Gori.
Earlier in the day Russian forces were seen holding their position at Igoeti, the day that both the president and defence minister had promised would end with a complete pullback from Georgian territory invaded nearly two weeks ago, though it seems likely Moscow will implement a buffer zone of sorts near South Ossetia.
Despite Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's promise to have his troops out by now, Friday appeared to be yet another day of a Russian occupation with no clear end in sight.
A top Russian general said on Thursday it could be 10 days before the bulk of the troops are gone, and the mixed signals from Moscow left Georgians worrying about Russia's intentions nearly a week after a cease-fire deal.
Under the deal, Russian forces are to pull back to positions they held before intense fighting broke out August 7 in the Russian-backed Georgian separatist region of South Ossetia.
Outside the South Ossetian capital, Tskhinvali, several ethnic Georgian villages were burning on Thursday - many days after fighting ended - and bore evidence of destruction from looting.
Also, on Thursday the media were taken on a Kremlin organised facility from Gori to Tskhinvali which was designed to showcase the destruction caused by Georgian troops in and around the South Ossetian capital.
The media were supervised at all times and were given only limited opportunity to film in Georgian villages.
AP Television footage showed destroyed buildings on the outskirts of Tskhinvali.
Residents in Tskhinvali complained of having no shelter.
Tskhinvali was badly damaged in the initial Georgian bombardment and many residents fled the area.
A small memorial were set up to commemorate the dead.

Footage of Georgian infantry in South Ossetia, August 2008. The Russian and South Ossetians claim that before the Georgian infantry entered the city on August 8, they had been murdering the civilian population with aircraft, artillery and tanks. The Georgian Government has claimed it not target civilians in the initial phase of 'Operation Clearfield ', codename for Georgia's operation it claimed to take control over the seperatist region. In this footage, did they target civilians ? A source claiming to be Georgian Military analyst, and who will only be known as a 'soldier', said that during the 10 day conflict," Georgian and Russian soldiers had only 3 direct contact battles - in 2 of them Russians had to retreat because of large number of casualties, and in the last one, 22 Georgian soldiers held 2 Russian battalions for 4 hours in the village of Zemo Nikozi - all of them were killed by air force and howitzer strikes,"
Human Rights Watch has disputed claims that more than 4,000 innocent civilians were killed, but if the Russian and Georgian Forces only had these clashes, why were so many innocent people killed ?
Also, the Georgian military has documented their own actions in South Ossetia, why is there a shortage of similar footage of Russians doing the same thing ?

STORYLINE
Georgia and the Moscow-backed breakaway province of South Ossetia both marked the first anniversary of their conflict on Friday.
The five-day war, with Russian troops and tanks backing South Ossetian forces, killed at least 390 people, displaced tens of thousands and left a legacy of animosity between leaders and fears among civilians that more fighting may erupt.
South Ossetia, only recognised by Russia as independent, is cut off from the rest of Georgia by military checkpoints.
Thousands of Russian troops are based in South Ossetia, supporting local forces widely alleged to have killed ethnic Georgian civilians, burned their houses and driven them at gunpoint from the region.
On a road near to the village of Kelchua in South Ossetia, destroyed and burnt out buildings formally belonging to Georgian civilians remain untouched.
Meanwhile, South Ossetians living in the village itself remain afraid that the conflict could restart at any time.
Clutching a photograph of her son who she said was killed in the fighting, Etery Kisiyeva described the terrible scene in her village during the fighting.
She said many villagers are still too scared to venture out of their homes, and often hear gunfire.
Another resident, Anatoly Kisiyev alleged that he was knocked unconscious by Georgian soldiers last May and taken to Gori about 80 kilometres (50 miles) west of Tbilisi for questioning.
He alleges that he was only released after the intervention of Russian officials who negotiated a prisoner exchange.
A year later, the dispute over what started the war remains heated.
Russia and South Ossetia contend it began with a thunderous Georgian artillery assault on Tskhinvali and that Moscow sent in troops to protect Russian peacekeeping forces and civilians; Georgia says it launched the barrage to try to repel Russian tanks and troops that had begun an invasion before dawn.
South Ossetia alleges the attack on Tskhinvali was genocide.
On Friday, South Ossetian leader Eduard Kokoity claimed Georgian forces massacred civilians on a road as they tried to escape the Tskhinvali attack.
Russia and South Ossetia claim Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili retains ambitions to seize control of South Ossetia by force and have denounced Western military aid to Georgia.

Then I was all over North Caucasus in Ingushetia, Chechnya, Kabardino-Balkaria, Stavropol Krai. Then Krasnodar Krai with Sochi, Adler and Krasnodar. After that I saw Rostov-on-Don, Volgograd and Mosva. I haven't been in Petersburg -- i was too tired and frustrated of Russia ;) At the end I went to Katowice where I met with Kasia and spent 4 day. Last 250km to Radom I did with two drivers.

There are almost 200 official countries in the world. But there are dozens more breakaway states which are determined to be separate and independent.
The breakaway states have their own rulers, parliaments or warlords, and are home to millions of people, but they're not officially recognised as proper countries by the rest of the world.
Several have their own armies and police forces, and issue passports and even postage stamps which the rest of the world ignores. All of the breakaway states have declared independence after violent struggles with a neighbouring state.
Some now survive peacefully, but others are a magnet for terrorists and weapons smuggling, and have armies ready for a fight. Several could be at the centre of future wars which threaten their regions and the wider world.
In a world of easy adventure tourism, Simon visits breakaway states & unrecognized nations which don't usually feature on the tourist trail: Somaliland, Transniestria, South Ossetia, Taiwan, Abkhazia, Ajaria and Nagorno-Karabkh
Welcome to Places That Don't Exist...
Georgia, South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Adjaria
The former Soviet state of Georgia has a particular problem with breakaway states. After independence from Moscow three parts of the country -- South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Adjaria, broke away from Georgia. Conflicts broke out, thousands were killed, and the whole region has suffered ever since. The new President of Georgia, who Simon meets in a lift, is trying to re-unify the country, but he faces a difficult task.
Simon travels across the frontline to visit South Ossetia -- a self-declared country which has had its own flag, army and government for 12 years. The Ossetian people speak a different language to Georgians, and their government has vowed to fight to the death rather than rejoin the Georgian fold.
Simon persuades a tough Ossetian Foreign Ministry official to let him have a look around. Tensions are high between Georgia and South Ossetia, and the Ossetians are suspicious of foreigners, particularly when a government guide tells locals in the market that Simon's from London, America. After his nationality is explained people become friendlier, although locals are tense because everyone has someone they love on the dangerous Georgian frontline and war is imminent. Everywhere Simon goes he's followed by state security.
Back in Georgia proper Simon realises war is close when he finds a troop train packed with soldiers and tanks. He's chased away by armed guards.
Heading west to the former breakaway region of Adjaria, Simon visits the palatial home of the former dictator. His son used to race a Lambourghini along the main street of the region, much to the anger of locals earning an average £15 a month.
Elsewhere in Georgia, Simon and his BBC crew are the first film unit ever allowed inside a major former Soviet military base. In a chilling scene, they find thousands of tonnes of explosives unguarded and huge working missiles, any of which could be stolen by criminals or terrorists, and which are capable of destroying skyscrapers.

STORYLINE
Russian troops were seen still manning a checkpoint outside the Georgian city of Gori on Thursday morning.
The checkpoint is located some six kilometres (3.7 miles) outside the central city which straddles the vital west-east highway to Tbilisi.
Much of Georgia remained tense, with Russian troops showing few signs they would pull back later this week as promised.
On Wednesday, they set up a guard post out of timber on a hill outside Igoeti, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) from Tbilisi, and a large Russian convoy rolled near the western city of Senaki.
Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili said that he did not believe Russia would soon withdraw from most of his country.
He said Russia's army was reducing its presence in some of the towns it occupied, but at the same time its troops seized new territory in the former Soviet republic.
On Thursday morning, residents of the capital Tbilisi voiced support for Russia's withdrawal.
One resident, Solomon Khvaladze, warned that there should not be any further bloodshed.
"This needs to be solved in a peaceful, humanitarian and patient way," he said.
"Nothing should be done through force - it will not help anybody. It is terrible when people kill each other, a sensible person would never resort to this," Khvaladze added.
The seizure of Gori and other nearby villages has left thousands of people with scarce and uncertain food supplies.
Maya, a resident of Gori who has been displaced by the conflict between Russia and Georgia which broke out on August 7, called for Russia to leave immediately.
"There is no alternative to this," Maya told AP Television.
"The whole world is talking about it. Children have now become refugees, they have been chased from their homes, and their houses destroyed."
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said 158-thousand people had to flee their homes in the last two weeks.

Georgia-Russia relations discussed at American University
27.04.11
Georgia-Russia relations and the reasons of the conflict between the two countries were discussed at the meeting held in the International Department of the American University in Washington on Tuesday.
The discussion lasted six hours and along with international experts, Georgian ambassador to the United States, Temur Iakobashvili was also attending it. Experts announced that the August war should not be discussed separately and the pre-conditions of the armed conflict should be also considered when discussing the problem.
The representative of the Atlantic Council Damon Wilson spoke about the provocations, which Russia used against Georgia to provoke armed conflict there. Temur Iakobashvili in his turn said the main factor, that irritated Russia, was the success Georgia had without its support.
`Let me reveal the secret - Russian don`t like successful Georgia. That is the challenge that they have, not Saakashvili not Iakobashvili or anybody else, successful Georgia without oil and gas, with no corruption and with transformation that we had is a direct threat to what Putin is trying to do in Russia. That is the problem not anything else. We have to well understand that its not about Abkhazia and South Ossetia, if Georgia would stay fragmented, disorganized and failed, everything would be nice, because Russians have this very strange notion of organized chaos around them and since they don`t possess any soft power instruments, they believe the chaos will prevent the west engage in these nations and it will allow them sooner or later to come back,` Iakobashvili said.

STORYLINE
Russian troops were seen apparently dismantling a makeshift roadside checkpoint near the town of Igoeti in central Georgia on Tuesday morning.
They kicked and shuffled a line of tyres, weighted with rocks, to the side of the road but then showed no sign of leaving the area, waiting instead beside the piles of stones which were all that remained of their checkpoint, some 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the key town of Gori.
The road seemed deserted, with no traffic passing either way while an AP Television crew remained at the scene.
Some 200 yards (metres) away, Georgian police at a checkpoint of their own continued to await a Russian withdrawal from Igoeti on Tuesday.
Four Russian armoured personnel carriers, each with about 15 men, rolled on Monday afternoon from Gori to Igoeti, a crossroads town even closer to the Georgian capital Tbilisi and on Tuesday morning, a Russian tank could also be seen on a hillside southeast of Gori.
Russian troops and tanks have controlled a wide swath of Georgia for days, including the country's main east-west highway where Gori sits.
AP television filmed a World food Programme aid convoy returning from Gori.
In Tbilisi one local resident said she thought the Russians were "trying to draw out the process."
"I just can't understand what they want from us and why they dislike us so much. They have always been jealous of Georgia and will continue to be so in the future," she added.
The Russian presence essentially cuts the small Caucasus Mountains nation in half and threatens pro-Western President Mikhail Saakashvili's efforts to keep it from falling apart after the war bolstered the chances of South Ossetia and another Russian-backed separatist region, Abkhazia, of remaining free of Georgian rule.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev had told French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Sunday that Russian troops would begin pulling back on Monday, but stopped short of promising they would return to Russia.
On the ground, there were few signs of a withdrawal, raising more questions about whether Russia was fulfilling its side of the cease-fire intended to end the short but intense war that has stoked tension between a resurgent Russia and the West.

Representatives of the Georgian community in Moscow gathered for a rally on Monday, as a parliamentary election began in their homeland.
Members of the pro-opposition movement "Voice of Georgia for Free Elections" voiced anger against President Mikhail Saakashvili's government, for failing to provide Russia-based Georgians with any means of voting in the election.
The activists gathered outside the Georgian Interests Section at the Swiss Embassy. The Georgian Embassy in Moscow was closed down four years ago, when the countries severed diplomatic ties.
Protesters set up a mock voting station in a cage outside the embassy, and simulated the casting of ballots.
The parliamentary vote is seen as a crucial test for President Saakashvili's United Movement ruling party, which faces a tough challenge from the opposition, led by tycoon Bidzina Ivanishvili.
Political tensions are high in Georgia following the leak of the video showing Tbilisi prison guards torturing and sexually abusing inmates. The video triggered massive protests around the country.

Scenario:
Russian Extremist Forces from North Ossetia exited the Roki Tunnel last night and began the occupation of South Ossetia. Their walk on the capital Tskhinvali was prepaired by a group of insurgents who have established control over the inner city. Once they gain complete control over the city area and build fortifications they will be not only a threat for the region but even for the NATO missile defense shield. We do not exactly know about their artillery capabilities and what to come.
We need the people back on our side so that the Georgian army can move through the city safely to face the Russians and push them out of South Ossetia.Therefor we have to avoid bloodsheed among the cilvilians at all cost.
The Documentary was shot in 1992 in the Tskhinvali Region (the so-called South Osetia). The story is about Georgian villagers, living in South Osetian enclave during the Civil, and undeclared Russian-Georgian war as well.

"War 08.08.08. The Art of Betrayal" -- is one of the first documentary Internet-films. This is the most outspoken film about the war, that started on the day of opening of the Olympic Games in Beijing, the film about the war, in which tens of Russian peacemaker perished as well as hundreds of peaceful Ossetians; it is the film about the war that turned out to be the doping drug for the rating of the republican candidate to the post of the President of the USA -- John McCain.
The editorial staff of Russia.ru kept an eye on the progress of this war from the very beginning of Georgian invasion in Tskhinval. The camera crew of the TV-channel came into the destroyed republic on the 12th of August for the first time.
This trip resulted in more than 100 footages about the destroyed capital of the South Ossetia, about the burnt villages, dead civilians, about the families left without their houses, about the people, whose relatives are missing.
Russia.ru created a large base of experts, commentators and witnesses of the war crimes of the Georgian army. Finally it was decided to carry out a complete investigation of the events in the Caucasus, and the camera crew of Russia.ru headed by the writer Kirill Benediktov went the the South Ossetia again.
The stories, that were told to the journalists by the witnesses of these events and by prosecutor's office of the Republic, clearly showed that the film about genocide of the Ossetians just can not have any other name but "The Art of Betrayal"
The attack upon Tskhinval was preceded by a range of treacheries. OSCE and other international observers have just ignored the claim of the Ossetian part about the fact that the Georgian army is preparing the base area for the bombardment of Tskhinval and has already taken a strategically important high ground and for several weeks has been building entrenchments, blindages and fire trenches there.
Exactly from these entrenchments fire was delivered to the sleeping city by the Georgian peacemakers wearing the uniform of NATO -- although they were the people whose duty was to keep peace within this region, but not to bring deaths. The traitors, the fifth column, turned out to be in the South Ossetia as well. And the most straightforward treachery was the speech of Mihail Saakashvili, who 4 hours before the attack upon Tskhinval calmed down the Ossetian people, persuading them that he doesn't want to set the war off.
The film "War 08.08.08. The Art of Betrayal" is made up of 40 hours of the video-footage, brought from the South Ossetia by the camera crew, found on the YouTube Web site and other video- portals, sent by the Internet users, or taken from the video recordings of the cell-phones of the dead Georgian soldiers.
For the first time in the history the war has been recorded by the video-cameras of the cell-phones. These recording give the audience the chance to see the attack upon the South Ossetia in the way, the aggressors (who were destroying the houses of the Ossetian people with the cries of joy) saw it.
The uniqueness of these recordings is obvious: the journalists just are not able to film the very thick of the war, the faces of the murderers at the moment when the crime is being committed, the most straightforward and scary video of genocide. All this was recorded by the Georgian military men themselves.
The mission of this film was to show the truth about this war to the huge amount of viewers, to the millions of people in the whole world. It is the film about those people, who set off this massacre, about the fact who backs Mihail Saakashvili, and who received political dividends from the genocide of the Ossetian people and from the western informational chasing aimed at Russia.
In the nearest future the film will be translated into English, Chinese, Spanish, German and other languages and will be available for all the users of the World Wide Web. If someone of our audience wishes to take part in the distribution of this film, if you have the chance to help us, you can put the hyperlink to the film "War 08.08.08" in your blog or on your Internet-page.
It is so, because today any people, who are not indifferent to the tragedy of the South Ossetia, can become the participants of unmasking the lies of a range of Western mass media and of politicians, with whose connivance and assistance Georgia was able to attack the sleeping Tskhinval to frighten the whole world by the made up "Russian threat".
It is so, because the war in the South Ossetia is not to vanish in history, is not to be forgotten and is not to become one the latest historical myths.
It is so, because all the world has to know what happened on the 8th of August, 2008.
