SECURITY forces, on Tuesday, averted what was potentially an ugly situation, as hundreds of supporters chanting ‘sai Buhari’ attacked the motorcade of President Goodluck Jonathan in Katsina.
A combined unit of soldiers and anti-riot policemen dispersed the supporters as they surged forward with the intent to attack the president and his delegation, as they visited the house of Hajia Dada, mother of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua in her residence at Yar’Adua Quarters, Katsina.
There was palpable tension as the president’s convoy drove past the area, with hundreds of Buhari supporters brandishing brooms, the APC symbol and welcoming the president with chants of “sai Buhari,” while some could be heard calling Jonathan “arna,” an unbeliever.
The president was about to emerge from the residence of Hajia Dada when the crowd suddenly started to surge towards his convoy, but the timely intervention of the security forces who fired canisters of tear gas provided cover for the convoy to speed away.
As the convoy sped towards the Katsina Airport, the crowd hurled stones at it, but nobody was hurt in the motorcade.

Nigeria, officially the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is a federal constitutional republic comprising 36 states and its Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Nigeria is located in West Africa and shares land borders with the Republic of Benin in the west, Chad and Cameroon in the east, and Niger in the north. Its coast in the south lies on the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean.
Present-day Nigeria has been the site of numerous kingdoms and tribal states spanning over a millennium. The modern state has its origins in British colonization during the late 19th to early 20th centuries, with the merging of the Southern Nigeria Protectorate and Northern Nigeria Protectorate. During the colonial period, the British set up administrative and legal structures whilst retaining traditional chiefdoms. Nigeria achieved independence in 1960, but plunged into a two-year civil war several years later. It has since alternated between democratically-elected civilian governments and military dictatorships, with its 2011 presidential elections being viewed as the first to be conducted reasonably freely and fairly.
Nigeria is often referred to as the "Giant of Africa", owing to its large population and economy. With approximately 174 million inhabitants, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the seventh most populous country in the world. Nigeria has one of the largest populations of youth in the world. The country is inhabited by over 500 ethnic groups, of which the three largest are the Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba. Regarding religion, Nigeria is roughly divided in half between Christians, who live mostly in the southern and central parts of the country, and Muslims, concentrated mostly in the northern and southwestern regions. A minority of the population practice religions indigenous to Nigeria, such as those native to Igbo and Yoruba peoples.
In 2014, Nigeria's economy (GDP) became the largest in Africa, worth more than $500 billion, and overtook South Africa to become the world's 21st largest economy. Furthermore, the debt-to-GDP ratio is only 11 percent (8 percent below the 2012 ratio). By 2050, Nigeria is expected to become one of the world's top 20 economies. The country's oil reserves have played a major role in its growing wealth and influence. Nigeria is considered to be an emerging market by the World Bank and has been identified as a regional power in Africa. It is also a member of the MINT group of countries, which are widely seen as the globe's next "BRIC-like" economies. It is also listed among the "Next Eleven" economies set to become among the biggest in the world. Nigeria is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the African Union, OPEC, and the United Nations among other international organizations.
The Nok people of Northern Nigeria produced the earliest terracotta sculptures found in the country. The Nok civilization flourished between 500 B.C. and 200 A.D. In the northern part of the country, Kano and Katsina have a recorded history dating to around 999 AD. Hausa kingdoms and the Kanem-Bornu Empire prospered as trade posts between North and West Africa.
The Yoruba kingdoms of Ife and Oyo in southwestern Nigeria became prominent in the 12th and 14th centuries, respectively. The oldest signs of human settlement at Ife's current site date back to the 9th century, and its material culture includes terracotta and bronze figures.
Oyo, at its territorial zenith in the late 17th to early 18th centuries, extended its influence from western Nigeria to modern-day Togo. The Edo Kingdom of Benin is located in southwestern Nigeria. Benin's power lasted between the 15th and 19th centuries. Their dominance reached as far as the city of Eko (an Edo name later changed to Lagos by the Portuguese) and further.
The Kingdom of Nri of the Igbo people consolidated in the 10th century and continued until it lost its sovereignty to the British in 1911. Nri was ruled by the Eze Nri, and the city of Nri is considered to be the foundation of Igbo culture. Nri and Aguleri, where the Igbo creation myth originates, are in the territory of the Umeuri clan. Members of the clan trace their lineages back to the patriarchal king-figure Eri. In West Africa, the oldest bronzes made using the lost-wax process were from Igbo Ukwu, a city under Nri influence.

Walking around Tachikawa, Japan, you get the feeling that it's a very pleasant place to live. Situated in an urban area, everything you need is within close walking distance. In addition, public transportation provides easy access to the entire metro Tokyo area.
Tachikawa reminded me a bit of the Forest Hills neighborhood in New York City. It's a city in itself, yet is part of a much larger metropolis. While there are lots of cars driving around Tachikawa, I got the feeling that many residents don't own one. They simply rely on taxis and trains from the Tachikawa JR Train Station, or ride a bike.
The Monorail was the first thing to catch my eye when I began my morning walk around Tachikawa. I hadn't seen a Monorail in years, not since my childhood trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. It really brought back some memories! But it was also nice to see that the Monorail has practical use, not simply as a tourist attraction.
The center of Tachikawa is bound by a bevy or staircases, escalators, raised walkways, and train tracks. Surrounded by tall buildings including the Hotel Mets, a Pachinko parlor, a mall, and fast food restaurants like McDonald's and KFC, the bright lights give off the vibe of a mini Times Square.
From this point, I made my way into the train station. It was early morning, and the masses were just beginning to shuffle off the trains. The Tachikawa Train Station is like controlled chaos! Everyone is walking at an extremely brisk pace. Some people must have been running late, so they are running! As a slow American, I walked to the side so I wouldn't get knocked over.
The running phenomenon is something that I had to get used to when I first started traveling to Japan. I would be at Starbucks or at a noodle shop and the waiter would literally be running to make my food as fast as possible. At first, I felt bad and was inclined to say, "Take your time, it's not a big deal! You don't have to run, I'm not starving here!" But my expat friends had told me, it's no use. Running and doing things as fast as possible is just part of the culture. Probably something we'll never understand as Americans!
After leaving the Tachikawa Train Station, I headed up towards Showa Memorial Park. I didn't enter the park, just took a right and explored some of the side streets. I pass a Japanese movie theater and the American themed Jesse James Steakhouse.
Next comes a line of Japanese vending machines. The beverage machines have everything from soda and coffee to vitamin water and a ton of other things I'd never seen before. Following the beverage machines are cigarette vending machines. You'll never see cigarette vending machines like that in America, just left outside on the street for underage kids to buy! I noticed some familiar cigarette brands like Marlboro but also lots of new kinds that I had never heard of before. Seven Stars cigarettes, anyone?
Finally, I head along some side streets that don't really have any car traffic. I get a few shots of quiet life in the neighborhoods. Many of these buildings appear to be mixed use, with businesses on the first floor and residential units upstairs. Slowly, I mosey my way back towards the hotel. I get one last shot of a taxi line, featuring the Toyota Comfort. The Comfort is a larger model for Japan, a rough equivalent to the Ford Crown Victoria in America. Distinctively, many of the Toyota Comfort taxicabs have the side mirrors on the bottom of the hood. It's a strange look, but I guess it helps the driver keep his head looking straight instead of turning to the side.
That concluded my walk around Tachikawa. The last clip of the video is a view from my room at the Crest Hotel. You can see the many different structure styles apparent in Tachikawa. From large residential towers to tiny three story buildings, the city is a work in progress.

China is to stop issuing multiple entry Hong Kong visas to residents of Shenzhen, state media reports.
The move is an attempt by Beijing to ease growing anger in Hong Kong over shopping trips by mainlanders who are take advantage of lower taxes.
Shenzhen residents will now only be able to enter Hong Kong once per week, and stay for no longer than a week.
Hong Kong officials say 47 million visits were made in 2014 by mainland Chinese people.
About a tenth of those visits were by people who entered Hong Kong more than once a week, a large proportion of them Shenzhen residents holding multiple entry visas.
Many of the visitors buy up household goods in bulk to resell across the border - as Hong Kong does not charge sales tax - despite this being illegal.
There have been angry protests in recent months over this so-called parallel trading, occasionally resulting in scuffles in shopping malls close to the border.
China's Xinhua news agency, citing the ministry of security, said on Monday that the new rules applied immediately.
It said the decision had been made because of concerns that Hong Kong was struggling to cope with the huge numbers of tourists.
Hong Kong's Chief Executive CY Leung welcomed the move, saying he had raised the issue with Beijing in June.
Mainlanders have to get permission from their government to enter Hong Kong.
Mr Leung warned that existing visas would remain valid, meaning it could take some time for the effect of the change to be seen.
He also cautioned that the "unruly protests" seen in towns close to the border had actually hampered the discussions and "hurt the feelings between the people of Hong Kong and the mainland", the South China Morning Post reports.
Parallel trading has been a key factor in the growing anti-mainland sentiment in Hong Kong.
There is huge demand in China for household items from Hong Kong, in particular milk powder, as they are seen as being both cheaper and better quality.
Hong Kongers say this trade pushes up costs and causes huge delays at border crossings, while also complaining about poor behaviour from mainlanders.
The authorities on both sides of the border routinely arrest people caught smuggling and crack down on commercial operators, but locals have long demanded more decisive action.
