Jeddah Tower, previously known as Kingdom Tower (برج المملكة) and Mile-High Tower (برج الميل), is a skyscraper under construction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, at a preliminary cost of $1.23 billion. It will be the centerpiece and first phase of a $20 billion proposed development known as Jeddah Economic City that will be located along the Red Sea on the north side of Jeddah. If completed as planned, the Jeddah Tower will reach unprecedented heights, becoming the tallest building in the world, as well as the first structure to reach the one-kilometre-high mark. (Initially planned to be 1.6 kilometres (1 mi) high, the geology of the area proved unsuitable for a tower of that height.) Jeddah Tower seeks to bring great changes in terms of development and tourism to the city of Jeddah.
As of January 1st, 2016, the tower stands 120m tall and 31 stories high! Construction should be completed by 2019.

This week in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia: Not your average sea-side experience!
Guided by my excellent Couchsurfing host, Mohammed, we set off on our 2 wheeled exploration of Jeddah starting at the airport and ending up several hours later at my hotel. After a power nap, it was off to see what the city had to offer at night. Dont even THINK about riding here in the summer - you will fry like an egg. This is 'winter' and its 30c.

Mecca - My trip to Saudi Arabia Part I
Mecca, the holiest city in Islam is only 70 km from Jeddah where I was staying for a few weeks. Mecca is where Prophet Mohammed was born and where the Quoran was composed.

Travel video about destination United Arab Emirates.
Situated on the Arabian Peninsula between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, the United Arab Emirates is a fairy-tale of the One Thousand And One Nights. In just a relatively few years the region has been catapulted from the Middle Ages into the 21st century and it is now an international financial centre within an ancient desert region. It contains seven sheikdoms that are united both politically and economically. Dubai is a wonderful holiday paradise with a romantic desert and a long history in which the past unites with the present. Dubai is the second largest state in the United Arab Emirates and is situated on the north coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Fifteen kilometres from Dubai is the tiny Emirate of Sharjah where life continues according to age-old Arabian tradition. Tourism was once popular on this former pirate coast but the Saudi king subsequently prohibited the consumption of alcohol and thus the tourists stayed away. On the western side of theHajar Mountains an oasis village developed that contains more than two hundred springs and wells. The oasis was once frequently occupied by Saudi Arabia but in 1974 the International Court Of Justice in the Hague ruled against the Saudi occupation. Today, Oman and the United Arab Emirates share the nine oasis villages of the Buraimi Oasis and live together in peace. Abu Dhabi is the largest of the seven Emirates and means, Father Of The Gazelle, a name derived from an ancient legend. The seventy three thousand square kilometres of the Abu Dhabi region cover eighty-six per cent of the United Arab Emirates and in the 1960’s the city had a population of five thousand that has now grown to almost a million. As the oil supplies gradually trickle away the sheiks are becoming increasingly cautious with their spending and the oil boom has now been followed by tourism in this fairy-tale holiday paradise that is full of desert romance.

Mecca, the holiest city in Islam is only 70 km from Jeddah where I was staying for a few weeks. Mecca is where Prophet Mohammed was born and where the Quoran was composed.
I was surprised to see that Mecca was actually a big city, in my mind, I always thought that it was a small holy place with the Kabaa.
The Kabaa is a cubical shaped building, covered with a beautiful black cloth embroidered with gold Quranic verses.
All Muslims around the world face the Kaaba during prayers, no matter where they are
When performing piligrimage, Muslims walk around the Kaaba 7 times while reciting verses. When reaching the spot of the Black Stone (in the eastern corner of the kabaa), the piligrims salute it. It is believed that this stone fell from Heaven.
the piligrims also drink ZamZam water, the holy water that was revealed to Hagar, Abraham's wife, when she desperately was looking for water in the desert.
The mosque within the Kabaa location is beautiful. Its arches interlace in an infinite design.
More than 15 million Muslims visit Mecca every year and I was amazed how clean and spotless it was!
The prayer call has began, I'll let you listen to it....

Description:
For any of us that have flown in an airplane, we know that air travel is one of the biggest headaches known to man. In addition to the extraordinarily high ticket prices, most of us also have to pay a luggage fee, along with convenient upgrades, plus the overpriced airport food. And if you want to check a bag, you’re confined to numerous rules and restrictions to what you can and can’t bring. Of course, with all of the recent terrorist attacks and September 11th, many are skittish about the intentions of other passengers, so the Transportation Security Administration was created in 2001 in order to help secure the airways and ports in the United States. But despite the presence of the TSA, people will still try to smuggle in odd things that are not limited to, but including drugs, animals, bugs, plants, and more.
For example, a woman was stopped in an airport in Melbourne when it was noticed that she was making strange and watery noises. Security then gave her a more detailed pat down and discovered that she have over 51 different kinds of exotic and tropical fish under her clothes in 15 little bags, stored in pockets. If that wasn’t bizarre enough, a total of eighteen severed heads were discovered in shipment at O’Hare in Chicago, which of course made the media go crazy with the headlines. It was later discovered that the heads were in the process of a legitimate shipment between medical facilities in Rome and Chicago. Talk about people losing their head over something that ended up being legitimate!
While you’re on vacation, of course there is always that one souvenir that you can’t resist bringing home with you. One traveler was out scuba diving and discovered a coral-covered cannonball in the midst of an 18th century shipwreck. Even though the traveler’s intentions were purely innocent, the airport had to shut down and be evacuated, since cannonballs are considered to be explosives.
Then of course people just have to fly with their animals and plants. One man was discovered to have brought 30 dead snakes that were venomous, from his trip to South Korea. Was he trying to bring home a souvenir? Or needed supplies to create a deadly poison? Then a woman was discovered to have packed a (sedated) 2 month old tiger cub in her suitcase. She was arrested and the cub was taken to a sanctuary for tigers. Speaking of animals, a man was also stopped in Los Angeles after an exotic bird flew from his suitcase. He also had 50 rare orchids as well as hid two monkeys in his pants.
And of course, people will try to smuggle drugs in. One guy actually had a real broken legs and managed to create a cast made from eleven pounds of cocaine. He might have been able to have gotten away with it if it wasn’t for the additional cocaine that was found in his bag.

On the morning of 7 April 2009 during a cruise from Dubai to Athens Barbara and I joined a three-hour group tour of Jeddah while our ship, Silversea Cruises' 296-passenger Silver Wind, docked at Jeddah Islamic Port for six hours. We had been at sea for three and a half days sailing in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea since departing from Salalah, Oman; and our next port of call would be Safaga, Egypt one and a half days later.
The commercial and industrial center of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia's second-largest city with a population of 3.4 million, lies just south of and across the Red Sea from the Egypt/Sudan border. Thought to have been settled for about two and a half millenia, Jeddah grew in importance under the Ottomans and later fell under British sway. Finally Jeddah came under the control of the Al Saud dynasty in 1925. With a population of 10,000 and an area of only one square kilometer in 1948, the area of Jeddah has exploded in recent decades to the extent that it now exceeds 1,000 square km (384 square miles).
Today some 2.5 million Muslim pilgrims transit Jeddah annually. Of that number, the city's port serves as the gateway to Mecca for some 80,000 pilgrims from all over the world with the remainder arriving mostly by air. Because of its many pilgrim visitors and expatriate workers, Jeddah is considered to be more cosmopolitan than most other Saudi cities.
Although we were not able to view it during our visit, Jeddah's most famous landmark is the King Fahd Fountain. Situated in the Red Sea and powered by two pumps which deliver more than 1,250 liters (330 gallons) per second, this fountain is, at 260 meters (845 feet), the world's highest. Jeddah also boasts a popular Red Sea corniche drive 32 km (20 miles) in length. Various downtown souks and suburban shopping centers offer up everything from gold and silver jewelry and perfumes to carpets and textiles to spices and electronics. However, nearly all goods are imported except for the locally-grown dates. Buyers are expected to bargain in all but the largest stores.
Prior to our call at Jeddah, cruise ship passengers had been requested to turn in any alcoholic drinks in their possession. Stewardesses removed these items from the cabins the night before our visit and then returned them after the ship had departed. Similarly, the ship's bars served only non-alcoholic drinks while in port. Then, soon after departure, the ship's bars were again restocked with alcohol.
Passengers had also been forewarned that only guests who pre-booked tours would be allowed ashore by Saudi authorities. Women guests were told that they must wear the long, loose overgarment known as an abaya as well as a head scarf. Male passengers, on the other hand, were requested not to wear shorts and were encouraged to don a long-sleeved shirt for our tour.
During our brief time ashore we walked through Al Balad, Jeddah's oldest district. Later we drove to the area of the gold and textile souks and then continued on to the central fish market before returning back to the port.
In Al Balad our guide led us down several narrow streets lined with historic multi-story buildings, most of which were constructed of coral interspersed with wooden beams. Some of these buildings sported mashrabiyas, the exterior lattice woodwork which spoke to the wealth of Jeddah's merchants. The mashrabiyas allowed women in the houses to enjoy the breeze while remaining obscured from those walking by in the streets below. Al Balad had once been surrounded by a city wall. However, this was demolished after World War II to allow for petroleum-financed urban development. Today, while some of the old city gates still survive, much of Jeddah is no more recent than the 1950s.
Our tour group visited the Nasseef House, formerly the home of the head of one of Jeddah's major trading families and now a museum. The house was constructed between 1872 and 1881 for a merchant who was serving as governor of Jeddah at the time. Although the Nasseef House contains 106 rooms, only a few on the ground floor are accessible to the public as part of the museum. Interestingly, it is said that for many years the yard of this house contained the only tree in Al Balad! This story helps one appreciate the scarcity of water in the area before modern times.
Jeddah's tropical climate ranges from hot to warm, with summer lasting eight to ten months per year. During the summer afternoon temperatures typically exceed 40 C. (104 F.) while in the winter an afternoon temperature of 25 C. (77 F.) is more normal. After sunset the sea breezes are refreshing at any time of year. Jeddah's rainfall is limited. In fact, there are only five days a year when rainfall exceeds 0.1 mm (0.0004 inches). December and January represent the rainiest months. Total annual rainfall is only 63 mm (2.5 inches). Jeddah's humidity ranges from 50% in July to 61% in September and October.
