Catherine Howard (c. 1518–1524 – 13 February 1542), also spelled Katherine, Katheryn or Kathryn, was the fifth wife of Henry VIII of England, and sometimes known by his reference to her as his "rose without a thorn".
Catherine's date and place of birth are unknown, but are occasionally cited as 1521 or 1525, and in Wingate, County Durham. The new Oxford Dictionary of National Biography gives her date of birth as anywhere between 1518–1524. Catherine married Henry VIII on 28 July 1540, at Oatlands Palace, in Surrey, almost immediately after the annulment of his marriage to Anne of Cleves was arranged. However, she was beheaded after less than two years of marriage to Henry on the grounds of treason for committing adultery while married to the King. Catherine was the third of Henry's consorts to have been a commoner.
Catherine Howard was a child of Lord Edmund Howard and Joyce Culpeper. Catherine's exact date of birth is unknown, although the year has been estimated as being after 1520, but before 1527. She was the niece of Elizabeth Howard, who was the mother of Queen Anne Boleyn. Therefore Catherine Howard and Anne Boleyn were first cousins and Catherine Howard and Princess Elizabeth (later Elizabeth I) were first-cousins-once-removed.

Plot: On his deathbed Tudor-king Henry VIII remembers his long reign and especially the crucial part his six marriages played in it, without producing the male heir he desired most to prevent civil wars for the succession as England suffered before his father's ascent. His first queen, Spanish princess Kathryn of Aragon, had one fatal flaw: her children died, except daughter Mary, so he pressed Rome for an annulment, and when that failed out went cardinal Wolsey as chief minister and Henry made himself head of the Church of England instead of the papacy and married Anne Boleyn. When she too failed to produce a male heir, just princess Elisabeth, he had her head roll for 'infidelity'. The third queen, gentle Jane Seymour, died giving birth to sickly prince Edward. For diplomatic reasons Henry married minor princes Anne of Cleves, whose utter lack of female charms causes another annulment and the fall of Thomas Cromwell, who recommended her. Fifth is the lovely Catherine Howard, cousin of Anne Boleyn, but again childless and found to have been carnal with servants before and after her royal marriage, so also decapitated. Finally Catherine Parr, a young widow, stands at his deathbed.

Leaving the Royal College of Music Rick has worked with some of the biggest names in rock and pop music playing on some of the biggest hits by artists as diverse as Cat Stevens, Marc Bolan and David Bowie. Likewise he has played with one of the biggest rock bands in the world. As a member of Rick played some of the biggest arenas in the world and released massively successful albums.
In 1973 he released his first proper solo album The Six Wives Of Henry The VIII following that album up in the seventies and eighties with other hugely popular and successful albums.
In the eighties Rick also recorded albums in the then popular genre entitled "New Age".
Releasing such popular albums as The Aspirant Series of recordings (Aspirant Sunrise, Aspirant Sunset and Aspirant Sunshadows).
The latest Rick Wakeman DVD is a live orchestral DVD entitled Classical Wakeman Live In Lugano.

Catherine enjoyed being Queen for its many perks, but to her, Henry was just a sickly, fat, 49-year-old man and she preferred the company of younger men for her passions, which unfortunately were not well-hidden from servants and officials. Once a love letter was found in the possession of Henry's main gentleman of the Privy chamber, Thomas Culpeper, Catherine was removed of her title as Queen, and she and her two lovers were executed less than two years after her marriage to Henry.

ARTIST NOTES: There are very few portraits of Catherine Howard, and the ones that exist leave a lot to question about how she actually looked. It seems to be fair to say that as some described her, she was not "conventionally beautiful", but she was fair enough not to be considered ugly. Historical accounts describe her as having auburn hair, pale skin, dark eyes and eyebrows, and a "rather fetching" beggining of a double-chin.
Comparisons of her various portraits seemed to betray a tendency toward a slightly "pinched" face with notable cheekbones as well as eyes that were bordering between seductive and drooping. It's probably fair to say that much of her appeal was in her vivaciousness and ravenous appetite for life and adventure. Henry VIII was a shrewd man who probably took Catherine's zest for living as a good indicator of her health and ability to bear healthy children and more importantly, to bear healthy MALE children.
