Margie - Jeanne Crain - 1946
1940's Hollywood take on the 1920s - but actually done with considerable attention to period. A charming, if dated and sentimental film that I can't definitely say has not been on DVD, though I've never been able to find it! Although the film is usually headed as a ‘musical', it can't really be classed as such in spite of the amount of music used in the film. I do not own the copyright to this fi

Part eight of a 15-part series of documentaries produced by the American Broadcasting Company on the 20th century and the rise of the United States as a superpower.
After the initial jubilation at the end of World War II, America faced severe domestic
demographic problems and the international specter of communism and the Cold War. In
response to the serious housing shortages exacerbated by the high marriage rates and
subsequent baby boom of returning soldiers and the girls they left behind, the Truman administration created the GI Bill, which enabled veterans to secure low interest mortgages and college educations. But the domestic bliss of new homes and growing families could not alleviate the growing fears and hysteria of the new atomic age, and a demagogue from Wisconsin, Senator Joseph McCarthy, harnessed this hysteria for his personal political success. This episode covers some of the major events of the immediate post-war years such as the Korean War, McCarthyism, the Marshall Plan, the Berlin Airlift and the adjustment of returning soldiers.

In 1946, Mr. Wilson (Edward G. Robinson) of the United Nations War Crimes Commission is hunting for Nazi fugitive Franz Kindler (Orson Welles). Kindler has effectively concealed his Nazi activities prior to his escape to the United States. He assumes a new identity, Charles Rankin, lands a job as a university professor and marries Mary Longstreet (Loretta Young), who is the daughter of Supreme Court justice Judge Adam Longstreet.
Wilson releases Kindler's former associate Meinike (Konstantin Shayne) and follows him to Harper, Connecticut, but Meinike is strangled before he can identify Kindler. Wilson must convince Mrs. Rankin, the only person who knows for certain that Meinike came to meet her husband, that her Charles is a war criminal.
The Stranger is a 1946 American film noir/drama film starring Orson Welles, Edward G. Robinson, and Loretta Young. Welles also directed the film, which was based on an Oscar-nominated screenplay written by Victor Trivas. Sam Spiegel was the film's producer, and the film's musical score is by Bronisław Kaper. It is believed that this is the first film released after World War II that showed footage of concentration camps. The Stranger was the only film made by Welles to have been a bona fide box office success on the first release (Citizen Kane had made back its budget and marketing, but not enough to make a profit). The copyright was by "The Haig Corporation" and it has been in the public domain for several years.

Unused / unissued footage - dates and locations may be unclear / unknown.
London traffic jams.
Traffic moving over Tower Bridge - not much of it, mostly horse-drawn carts, a few cars and trucks. M/S of moving truck in the traffic congested (for the time) streets of the City. Good point of view shots as we travel along the roads. Crowds of people stand in a City square and listen to a brass band playing.
Several shots of jay walkers holding up traffic by walking in the middle of the road.
This is great for showing traffic (obviously!) in 1946, but also for adverts on buses and on street billboards! Such as 'Did you Maclean your teeth today?', 'Don't be vague, ask for Haigs' and 'To colour Grey hair with Safety, Evan Williams Tunisian Henna'. A few servicemen and women walk along streets, but most pedestrians are in civvies.
People hold up bus by clambering onto it in the middle of the road. Man hails a taxi and holds up traffic whilst he boards it in the middle of the road. View of the Strand as we travel along, passing Vaudeville Theatre. We travel on to Piccadilly.

wn.com/London Traffic Jams (1946)
A few servicemen and women walk along streets, but most pedestrians are in civvies.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind
Wind is the flow of gases on a large scale. On Earth, wind consists of the bulk movement of air. In outer space, solar wind is the movement of gases or charged particles from the sun through space, while planetary wind is the outgassing of light chemical elements from a planet's atmosphere into space. Winds are commonly classified by their spatial scale, their speed, the types of forces that cause them, the regions in which they occur, and their effect. The strongest observed winds on a planet in our solar system occur on Neptune and Saturn.
In meteorology, winds are often referred to according to their strength, and the direction from which the wind is blowing. Short bursts of high speed wind are termed gusts. Strong winds of intermediate duration (around one minute) are termed squalls. Long-duration winds have various names associated with their average strength, such as breeze, gale, storm, hurricane, and typhoon. Wind occurs on a range of scales, from thunderstorm flows lasting tens of minutes, to local breezes generated by heating of land surfaces and lasting a few hours, to global winds resulting from the difference in absorption of solar energy between the climate zones on Earth. The two main causes of large-scale atmospheric circulation are the differential heating between the equator and the poles, and the rotation of the planet (Coriolis effect). Within the tropics, thermal low circulations over terrain and high plateaus can drive monsoon circulations. In coastal areas the sea breeze/land breeze cycle can define local winds; in areas that have variable terrain, mountain and valley breezes can dominate local winds.
In human civilization, wind has inspired mythology, influenced the events of history, expanded the range of transport and warfare, and provided a power source for mechanical work, electricity and recreation. Wind powers the voyages of sailing ships across Earth's oceans. Hot air balloons use the wind to take short trips, and powered flight uses it to increase lift and reduce fuel consumption. Areas of wind shear caused by various weather phenomena can lead to dangerous situations for aircraft. When winds become strong, trees and man-made structures are damaged or destroyed.
Winds can shape landforms, via a variety of aeolian processes...

8-Foot High Speed Tunnel
As interest in the field of high-speed aerodynamics increased in the early 1930s, Langley's existing wind tunnels proved too small and underpowered for effective high-speed aircraft testing. Understanding that a new facility would give U.S. engineers a decided advantage in the aeronautical field, Langley's director of research George W. Lewis authorized the design and construction of a larger high speed wind tunnel in 1933. Construction of the 8-Foot High Speed Tunnel (HST) was funded by the Public Works Administration (PWA) and completed in 1936 at a cost of $266,000...

Stapp also participated in wind-blast experiments, in which he flew in jet aircraft at high speeds to determine whether or not it was safe for a pilot to remain with his aircraft if the canopy should accidentally blow off. Stapp stayed with his aircraft at a speed of 570 mph (917 km/h), with the canopy removed, and suffered no injurious effects from the wind blasts. Among these experiments was one of the first high-altitude skydives, executed by Stapp himself. He also supervised research programs in the fields of human factors in escape from aircraft and human tolerance to abrupt acceleration and deceleration...

I do not own the copyright to this film and no infringement is intended.

part two is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKGex1nOLW4
British television was born in 1936, however it was short lived being closed down three years later for World War II - and right in the middle of a Mickey Mouse cartoon. One of the early presenters was Jasmine Bligh - chosen from1,122 hopeful applicants.
With the war over, the television service re-started. Just one channel, the BBC. To open it, there was Jasmine again. "Good afternoon everybody. How are you? Do you remember me, Jasmine Bligh?"
This 70 minute 35mm film was made "in the Spring of 1946" to be both broadcast on BBC television and shown to cinema audiences. The concept was to explain what television really is... As Jasmine says, it is to be watched at home in front of a fire.
Due to YouTube's policy of only accepting 10 min. video here is part one.
