Iranian Army VS Israeli Army 2014
The Islamic Republic of Iran Army (IRIA) is the ground forces of the Military of Islamic Republic of Iran. In Iran, it is also called Artesh, (ارتش) which is Persian for "army." As of 2007, the regular Iranian Army was estimated to have 350,000 personnel (220,000 conscripts and 130,000 professionals) plus around 350,000 reservists for a total of 700,000 soldiers according to the CSIS.[1][2] Conscripts serve for 18 months and have professional military training.[3]

They consist of the ground forces, air force, and navy. It is the sole military wing of the Israeli security forces, and has no civilian jurisdiction within Israel. The IDF is headed by its Chief of General Staff, the Ramatkal, subordinate to the Defense Minister of Israel; Rav Aluf Benny Gantz has served as Chief of Staff since 2011.
An order from Defense Minister David Ben-Gurion on 26 May 1948, officially set up the Israel Defense Forces as a conscript army formed out of the paramilitary group Haganah, incorporating the militant groups Irgun and Lehi. The IDF served as Israel's armed forces in all the country's major military operations—including the 1948 War of Independence, 1951--1956 Retribution operations, 1956 Sinai War, 1964--1967 War over Water, 1967 Six-Day War, 1967--1970 War of Attrition, 1968 Battle of Karameh, 1973 Operation Spring of Youth, 1973 Yom Kippur War, 1976 Operation Entebbe, 1978 Operation Litani, 1982 Lebanon War, 1982--2000 South Lebanon conflict, 1987--1993 First Intifada, 2000--2005 Second Intifada, 2002 Operation Defensive Shield, 2006 Lebanon War, 2008-2009 Operation Cast Lead, 2012 Operation Pillar of Defense, and others. The number of wars and border conflicts in which the IDF has been involved in its short history makes it one of the most battle-trained armed forces in the world.[9][10] While originally the IDF operated on three fronts—against Lebanon and Syria in the north, Jordan and Iraq in the east, and Egypt in the south—after the 1979 Egyptian--Israeli Peace Treaty, it has concentrated its activities in southern Lebanon and the Palestinian Territories, including the First and the Second Intifada.
The Israel Defense Forces differs from most armed forces in the world in many ways. Differences include the mandatory conscription of women and its structure, which emphasizes close relations between the army, navy, and air force. Since its founding, the IDF has been specifically designed to match Israel's unique security situation. The IDF is one of Israeli society's most prominent institutions, influencing the country's economy, culture and political scene. In 1965, the Israel Defense Forces was awarded the Israel Prize for its contribution to education.[11] The IDF uses several technologies developed in Israel, many of them made specifically to match the IDF's needs, such as the Merkava main battle tank, Achzarit armoured personnel carrier, high tech weapons systems, the Iron Dome missile defense system, Trophy active protection system for vehicles, and the Galil and Tavor assault rifles. The Uzi submachine gun was invented in Israel and used by the IDF until December 2003, ending a service that began in 1954. Following 1967, the IDF has close military relations with the United States,[12] including development cooperation, such as on the F-15I jet, THEL laser defense system, and the Arrow missile defense system.

Iranian Army’s Ground Forces unveil new military equipment
The Iranian Army has unveiled new domestically-manufactured military equipment ahead of National Army Day.
The military hardware unveiled on Wednesday in the presence of Commander of the Iranian Army’s Ground Forces Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan included the Aqareb wheeled battle tank and a robot as well as Baher and Shaher sniper guns.
The eight-wheeled Aqareb tank is equipped with a 90 mm-caliber cannon and can carry four military personnel.
It also features a state-of-the-art fire control system, an independent suspension system and eight active wheels.
Also, the robot unveiled is a 4x4 one capable of carrying two missiles and a load of up to 600 kilograms. The robot can carry out programmed operations and manage time.
Baher anti-aircraft sniper gun
Baher, a 23 mm-caliber anti-aircraft gun, is also capable of penetrating bulletproof vests. It weighs 62 kilograms, has a range of four kilometers and is operated by a crew of three personnel.
Shaher is a 14.5mm sniper rifle, which has a maximum effective range of three kilometers. The 24-kilogram weapon is operated by three personnel.
Among the military hardware unveiled on Wednesday was an ultra-light combat vehicle which can travel with a speed of 100 and 130 kilometers per hour in side roads and gravel roads respectively.
The single-seat vehicle weighs 4 tonnes and has an effective operational radius of 400 kilometers.
In recent years, Iran has made major breakthroughs in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing important military equipment and systems.
Iran has repeatedly assured other nations, especially its neighbors, that its military might poses no threat to other countries, insisting that its defense doctrine is based on deterrence.

The Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics is responsible for planning logistics and funding of the armed forces and is not involved with in-the-field military operational command.
Iran's military was called the Middle East's most powerful by General John Abizaid, Commander, United States Central Command (U.S. forces' commander in the region). However General Abizaid said he did not include the Israel Defense Forces as they did not fall into his area of operations.[5]
When the Pahlavi dynasty took power in 1925, following years of war with Russia, the standing Persian army was almost non-existent. The new king Reza Shah Pahlavi, was quick to develop a new military. In part, this involved sending hundreds of officers to European and American military academies. It also involved having foreigners re-train the existing army within Iran. In this gap the Iranian Air Force was established and the foundation for a new Navy was laid.
Britain and the Soviet Union invaded Iran in 1941 in order to secure the area from German interventions. Following World War II, 1500 Iranian troops supported the Sultan of Oman against the Dhofar Rebellion from 1962--1975. In 1971, Iranian forces besieged Abu Musa and the Tunb islands. Before the Islamic revolution of 1979, Iran contributed to United Nations peacekeeping operations. Iran joined ONUC in the Congo in the 1960s, and ten years later, Iranian troops joined UNDOF on the Golan Heights.
With the Iranian revolution in 1979, deteriorating relations with the United States resulted in international sanctions led by the USA, including an arms embargo being imposed on Iran.
Revolutionary Iran was taken by surprise, by the Iraqi invasion that began the Iran--Iraq War of 1980--1988. During this conflict, there were several confrontations with the United States. From 1987, the United States Central Command sought to stop Iranian mine-laying vessels from blocking the international sea lanes through the Persian Gulf in Operation Prime Chance. The operation lasted until 1989. On April 18, 1988, the U.S. retaliated for the Iranian mining of the USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG-58)in Operation Praying Mantis. Simultaneously, the Iranian armed forces had to learn to maintain and keep operational, their large stocks of U.S.-built equipment and weaponry without outside help, due to American sanctions. Reaching back on equipment purchased from the U.S.A. in the 1970s, the Iranians began establishing their own armaments industry; their efforts in this remained largely unrecognised internationally, until recently. However, Iran was able to obtain limited amounts of American-made armaments, when it was able to buy American spare parts and weaponry for its armed forces, during the Iran-Contra affair. At first, deliveries came via Israel and later, from the USA.
The Iranian government established a five-year rearmament program in 1989 to replace worn-out weaponry from the Iran-Iraq war. Iran spent $10 billion between 1989 and 1992 on arms. Iran ordered weapons designed to prevent other naval vessels from accessing the sea, including submarines and long-range Soviet planes capable of attacking aircraft carriers.[6]
A former military-associated police force, the Iranian Gendarmerie, was disbanded in 1990.
In 1991, the Iranian armed forces received a number of Iraqi aircraft fleeing from the Persian Gulf war of that year; most of which were incorporated into the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force.
From 2003, there have been repeated U.S. and British allegations that Iranian forces have been covertly involved in the Iraq War. In 2007, Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces also took prisoner Royal Navy personnel when a boarding party from HMS Cornwall (F99)was seized in the waters between Iran and Iraq, in the Persian Gulf.
According to Juan Cole, Iran has never launched an "aggressive war" in modern history, and its leadership adheres to a doctrine of "no first strike".[7] The country's military budget is the lowest per capita in the Persian Gulf region besides the UAE.[7]
Since 1979, there are no foreign military bases present in Iran. According to Article 146 of the Iranian Constitution, the establishment of any foreign military base in the country is forbidden, even for peaceful purposes.[8]

Iran military acting in self-defense
The Iranian president further praised the Armed Forces’ brave moves to defend the country and the Islamic establishment after the victory of Iran's Islamic Revolution in 1979.
Iran’s Army is the symbol of national might, order and civilization, Rouhani said, adding the Armed Forces are presently the “cause of the peace” not only for the Iranian people but for the regional nations.
He emphasized that the presence of Iran’s Navy in the high seas is not a cause for concern to any regional country.
“Our doctrine is not a military and war doctrine but [is] a defense doctrine. Our strategy is always an active deterrent strategy; deterrence to establish peace and security in our country and also in regional states,” Rouhani pointed out.
He stated that Iran’s powerful Armed Forces seek to establish peace and security and protect the defenseless people, added that they do not intend to carry out an act of aggression against the oppressed people and children.

Iranian Armed Forces have begun a major parade to mark the 33rd anniversary of eight years of defense against Iraqi invasion under executed dictator Saddam Hussein.
The opening ceremony of the 'Sacred Defense Week' started on Sunday at the mausoleum of the founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
The latest military and defensive achievements of the country's Armed Forces will be displayed during the parade.
Iran's President Hassan Rouhani is scheduled to deliver a speech during the ceremony.
Among the high-ranking Iranian military officials present at the ceremony are Chief of Staff of Iran's Armed Forces Major General Hassan Firouzabadi, Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan, Commander of Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari and Commander of Iran's Army Major General Ataollah Salehi.
The Sacred Defense Week commemorates the braveries of the Iranian soldiers who fought in the 1980-1988 Iraqi-imposed war and defended their country from enemy aggressions.

This is the first time Iranian media are allowed there. Military officials say the tunnels are dug some 500 meters into high mountains. The Commander of Aerospace Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizade says the missiles are only one trigger away from being launched in case of any threat against the Islamic republic. Hajizade stressed that such bases lie beneath almost all Iranian cities. The IRGC general stressed that this is only part of Iran’s military might.
The Iranian military commander added Tehran does not have any concerns over the enemies’ state of the art military and spying equipment. Hajizade noted that Iran, thanks to the efforts made by its defense forces, enjoys complete security while being surrounded by countries that are grappling with unrest and conflict. The I-R-G-C commander says Tehran is to launch a massive military drill in the near future.

Armed Forces of Saudi Arabia
The Royal Saudi Armed Forces (Arabic: القوات المسلحة الملكية السعودية, al-Quwwāt al-Musallaḥah al Malakeeya as-Suʿūdiyyah) consists of the Saudi Arabian Army, the Royal Saudi Air Force, the Royal Saudi Navy, the Royal Saudi Air Defense, the Saudi Arabian National Guard (SANG), and paramilitary forces, totaling over 200,000 active-duty personnel. In 2012 the armed forces had the following personnel: the army, 75,000; Royal Saudi Air Force, 20,000; air defense, 16,000; Royal Saudi Navy, 13,500 (including 3,000 marines); and the SANG had 75,000 active soldiers and 25,000 tribal levies. In addition, there is a military intelligence service, the General Intelligence Presidency (GIP).
The Saudi Arabian National Guard is not a reserve but a fully operational front-line force, and originated out of Abdul Aziz’s tribal military-religious force, the Ikhwan. Its modern existence, however, is attributable to it being effectively Abdullah’s private army since the 1960s and, unlike the rest of the armed forces, is independent of the Ministry of Defense. The SANG has been a counterbalance to the Sudairi faction in the royal family; Salman bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud, the king, is one of the so-called "Sudairi Seven" and controls the remainder of the armed forces.

The number of wars and border conflicts in which the IDF has been involved in its short history makes it one of the most battle-trained armed forces in the world.[9][10] While originally the IDF operated on three fronts—against Lebanon and Syria in the north, Jordan and Iraq in the east, and Egypt in the south—after the 1979 Egyptian--Israeli Peace Treaty, it has concentrated its activities in southern Lebanon and the Palestinian Territories, including the First and the Second Intifada.
The Israel Defense Forces differs from most armed forces in the world in many ways. Differences include the mandatory conscription of women and its structure, which emphasizes close relations between the army, navy, and air force. Since its founding, the IDF has been specifically designed to match Israel's unique security situation. The IDF is one of Israeli society's most prominent institutions, influencing the country's economy, culture and political scene. In 1965, the Israel Defense Forces was awarded the Israel Prize for its contribution to education.[11] The IDF uses several technologies developed in Israel, many of them made specifically to match the IDF's needs, such as the Merkava main battle tank, Achzarit armoured personnel carrier, high tech weapons systems, the Iron Dome missile defense system, Trophy active protection system for vehicles, and the Galil and Tavor assault rifles. The number of wars and border conflicts in which the IDF has been involved in its short history makes it one of the most battle-trained armed forces in the world.[9][10] While originally the IDF operated on three fronts—against Lebanon and Syria in the north, Jordan and Iraq in the east, and Egypt in the south—after the 1979 Egyptian--Israeli Peace Treaty, it has concentrated its activities in southern Lebanon and the Palestinian Territories, including the First and the Second Intifada.
The Israel Defense Forces differs from most armed forces in the world in many ways. Differences include the mandatory conscription of women and its structure, which emphasizes close relations between the army, navy, and air force. Since its founding, the IDF has been specifically designed to match Israel's unique security situation. The IDF is one of Israeli society's most prominent institutions, influencing the country's economy, culture and political scene. In 1965, the Israel Defense Forces was awarded the Israel Prize for its contribution to education.[11] The IDF uses several technologies developed in Israel, many of them made specifically to match the IDF's needs, such as the Merkava main battle tank, Achzarit armoured personnel carrier, high tech weapons systems, the Iron Dome missile defense system, Trophy active protection system for vehicles, and the Galil and Tavor assault rifles. The Uzi submachine gun was invented in Israel and used by the IDF until December 2003, ending a service that began in 1954. Following 1967, the IDF has close military relations with the United States,[12] including development cooperation, such as on the F-15I jet, THEL laser defense system, and the Arrow missile defense system.

Iranian Army’s Ground Forces unveil new military equipment
The Iranian Army has unveiled new domestically-manufactured military equipment ahead of National Army Day.
The military hardware unveiled on Wednesday in the presence of Commander of the Iranian Army’s Ground Forces Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan included the Aqareb wheeled battle tank and a robot as well as Baher and Shaher sniper guns.
The eight-wheeled Aqareb tank is equipped with a 90 mm-caliber cannon and can carry four military personnel.
It also features a state-of-the-art fire control system, an independent suspension system and eight active wheels.
Also, the robot unveiled is a 4x4 one capable of carrying two missiles and a load of up to 600 kilograms. The robot can carry out programmed operations and manage time.
Baher anti-aircraft sniper gun
Baher, a 23 mm-caliber anti-aircraft gun, is also capable of penetrating bulletproof vests. It weighs 62 kilograms, has a range of four kilometers and is operated by a crew of three personnel.
Shaher is a 14.5mm sniper rifle, which has a maximum effective range of three kilometers. The 24-kilogram weapon is operated by three personnel.
Among the military hardware unveiled on Wednesday was an ultra-light combat vehicle which can travel with a speed of 100 and 130 kilometers per hour in side roads and gravel roads respectively.
The single-seat vehicle weighs 4 tonnes and has an effective operational radius of 400 kilometers.

These forces total about 545,000 active personnel (not including the Police Force).[4] All branches of armed forces fall under the command of General Headquarters of Armed Forces (ستاد کل نیروهای مسلح). The Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics is responsible for planning logistics and funding of the armed forces and is not involved with in-the-field military operational command.
Iran's military was called the Middle East's most powerful by General John Abizaid, Commander, United States Central Command (U.S. forces' commander in the region). However General Abizaid said he did not include the Israel Defense Forces as they did not fall into his area of operations.[5]
When the Pahlavi dynasty took power in 1925, following years of war with Russia, the standing Persian army was almost non-existent. The new king Reza Shah Pahlavi, was quick to develop a new military. In part, this involved sending hundreds of officers to European and American military academies. It also involved having foreigners re-train the existing army within Iran. In this gap the Iranian Air Force was established and the foundation for a new Navy was laid.
Britain and the Soviet Union invaded Iran in 1941 in order to secure the area from German interventions. Following World War II, 1500 Iranian troops supported the Sultan of Oman against the Dhofar Rebellion from 1962--1975. In 1971, Iranian forces besieged Abu Musa and the Tunb islands. Before the Islamic revolution of 1979, Iran contributed to United Nations peacekeeping operations. Iran joined ONUC in the Congo in the 1960s, and ten years later, Iranian troops joined UNDOF on the Golan Heights.
With the Iranian revolution in 1979, deteriorating relations with the United States resulted in international sanctions led by the USA, including an arms embargo being imposed on Iran.
Revolutionary Iran was taken by surprise, by the Iraqi invasion that began the Iran--Iraq War of 1980--1988. During this conflict, there were several confrontations with the United States. From 1987, the United States Central Command sought to stop Iranian mine-laying vessels from blocking the international sea lanes through the Persian Gulf in Operation Prime Chance. The operation lasted until 1989. On April 18, 1988, the U.S. retaliated for the Iranian mining of the USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG-58)in Operation Praying Mantis. Simultaneously, the Iranian armed forces had to learn to maintain and keep operational, their large stocks of U.S.-built equipment and weaponry without outside help, due to American sanctions. Reaching back on equipment purchased from the U.S.A. in the 1970s, the Iranians began establishing their own armaments industry; their efforts in this remained largely unrecognised internationally, until recently. However, Iran was able to obtain limited amounts of American-made armaments, when it was able to buy American spare parts and weaponry for its armed forces, during the Iran-Contra affair. At first, deliveries came via Israel and later, from the USA.
The Iranian government established a five-year rearmament program in 1989 to replace worn-out weaponry from the Iran-Iraq war. Iran spent $10 billion between 1989 and 1992 on arms. Iran ordered weapons designed to prevent other naval vessels from accessing the sea, including submarines and long-range Soviet planes capable of attacking aircraft carriers.[6]
A former military-associated police force, the Iranian Gendarmerie, was disbanded in 1990.
In 1991, the Iranian armed forces received a number of Iraqi aircraft fleeing from the Persian Gulf war of that year; most of which were incorporated into the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force.
From 2003, there have been repeated U.S. and British allegations that Iranian forces have been covertly involved in the Iraq War. In 2007, Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces also took prisoner Royal Navy personnel when a boarding party from HMS Cornwall (F99)was seized in the waters between Iran and Iraq, in the Persian Gulf.
According to Juan Cole, Iran has never launched an "aggressive war" in modern history, and its leadership adheres to a doctrine of "no first strike".[7] The country's military budget is the lowest per capita in the Persian Gulf region besides the UAE.[7]
Since 1979, there are no foreign military bases present in Iran. According to Article 146 of the Iranian Constitution, the establishment of any foreign military base in the country is forbidden, even for peaceful purposes.[8]

Iranian Armed Forces have begun a major parade to mark the 33rd anniversary of eight years of defense against Iraqi invasion under executed dictator Saddam Hussein.
The opening ceremony of the 'Sacred Defense Week' started on Sunday at the mausoleum of the founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
The latest military and defensive achievements of the country's Armed Forces will be displayed during the parade.
Iran's President Hassan Rouhani is scheduled to deliver a speech during the ceremony.
Among the high-ranking Iranian military officials present at the ceremony are Chief of Staff of Iran's Armed Forces Major General Hassan Firouzabadi, Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan, Commander of Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari and Commander of Iran's Army Major General Ataollah Salehi.

This is the first time Iranian media are allowed there. Military officials say the tunnels are dug some 500 meters into high mountains. The Commander of Aerospace Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizade says the missiles are only one trigger away from being launched in case of any threat against the Islamic republic. Hajizade stressed that such bases lie beneath almost all Iranian cities. The IRGC general stressed that this is only part of Iran’s military might.
The Iranian military commander added Tehran does not have any concerns over the enemies’ state of the art military and spying equipment. Hajizade noted that Iran, thanks to the efforts made by its defense forces, enjoys complete security while being surrounded by countries that are grappling with unrest and conflict. The I-R-G-C commander says Tehran is to launch a massive military drill in the near future.

Armed Forces of Saudi Arabia
The Royal Saudi Armed Forces (Arabic: القوات المسلحة الملكية السعودية, al-Quwwāt al-Musallaḥah al Malakeeya as-Suʿūdiyyah) consists of the Saudi Arabian Army, the Royal Saudi Air Force, the Royal Saudi Navy, the Royal Saudi Air Defense, the Saudi Arabian National Guard (SANG), and paramilitary forces, totaling over 200,000 active-duty personnel. In 2012 the armed forces had the following personnel: the army, 75,000; Royal Saudi Air Force, 20,000; air defense, 16,000; Royal Saudi Navy, 13,500 (including 3,000 marines); and the SANG had 75,000 active soldiers and 25,000 tribal levies. In addition, there is a military intelligence service, the General Intelligence Presidency (GIP).
The Saudi Arabian National Guard is not a reserve but a fully operational front-line force, and originated out of Abdul Aziz’s tribal military-religious force, the Ikhwan. Its modern existence, however, is attributable to it being effectively Abdullah’s private army since the 1960s and, unlike the rest of the armed forces, is independent of the Ministry of Defense. The SANG has been a counterbalance to the Sudairi faction in the royal family; Salman bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud, the king, is one of the so-called "Sudairi Seven" and controls the remainder of the armed forces.

October 09, 2015 - (CNN)—A top Iranian military commander has been killed by ISIS in Syria, where he was advising the Syrian army in its fight against extremists, Iranian state media reported Friday.
Brig. Gen. Hossein Hamedani, a former commander in the Iran-Iraq War of 1980-88, was killed Thursday night outside Aleppo during an attack by ISIS, Iran's semiofficial FARS News Agency reported.
Hamadani was there "to render military advice to the Syrian army and popular forces in their fight" against ISIS, the agency reported.
One of the Syrian regime's strongest allies, Iran admits to having military advisers to aid Syrian government forces in the country's civil war, which has killed more than 300,000 people in four years.
Iranian media carried messages of condolence from Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who described Hamedani's death as a big loss and applauded the senior commander for his bravery in protecting Shiite holy sites.

The media focused much of its attention this week on Syrian President Bashar Assad's visit to Moscow. But back in Syria itself, the city of Aleppo and the surrounding countryside have been the site of an immense military offensive. Under cover of Russian airstrikes, forces loyal to Assad have attempted to take back rebel-held areas of the nation's largest city.
The regime's fortunes have improved as rebel groups struggle with frequent bombardment by Russian forces. Assad's latest assault on Aleppo began late last week, after the Syrian military retook several towns south of the city. Along with Russian jets, the advance on Aleppo has brought in a number of Assad's other allies: Iranian-backed militias and Hezbollah fighters have amassed in the area in recent weeks.
There are also reports indicating the large-scale presence of Iranian ground forces, although an expert on militaries in the region disputed those accounts to The New York Times. Militia officials involved in the offensive also claim that Iranian military commander Qassim Soleimani is coordinating the attack, according to The Washington Post.

The media focused much of its attention this week on Syrian President Bashar Assad's visit to Moscow. But back in Syria itself, the city of Aleppo and the surrounding countryside have been the site of an immense military offensive. Under cover of Russian airstrikes, forces loyal to Assad have attempted to take back rebel-held areas of the nation's largest city.
The regime's fortunes have improved as rebel groups struggle with frequent bombardment by Russian forces. Assad's latest assault on Aleppo began late last week, after the Syrian military retook several towns south of the city. Along with Russian jets, the advance on Aleppo has brought in a number of Assad's other allies: Iranian-backed militias and Hezbollah fighters have amassed in the area in recent weeks.
There are also reports indicating the large-scale presence of Iranian ground forces, although an expert on militaries in the region disputed those accounts to The New York Times. Militia officials involved in the offensive also claim that Iranian military commander Qassim Soleimani is coordinating the attack, according to The Washington Post.

Tehran’s release Saturday of five Iranian-American citizens, part of a broader prisoner exchange deal between Iran and the US, is just the dramatic first act of something far more important: the realization of the nuclear deal and the lifting of sanctions on Iran.
The prisoner release also suggests that the warming relationship between Tehran and Washington is deeper and broader than the narrow nuclear issue. The two nations could potentially resume diplomatic relations in the future, but this will prove to be a much more difficult task.
The requirements on Iran, most of which have been carried out, were to reduce the number of centrifuges enriching uranium to 6,000 from 20,000, to dismantle the nuclear reactor in Arak, to reduce the stock of enriched uranium, to ship any of it that has been enriched to 20 percent, and to continue to give IAEA inspectors access to their nuclear sites.
The agreement is valid for 10 years.
The sanctions began following a 2006 decision by the UN Security Council against individuals and companies associated with the Iranian nuclear and missile programs.
They were expanded unilaterally by Western countries, and eventually most of the world, to the oil and gas industries, the shipping and insurance industries and the banks of the Islamic Republic.
Who had the upper hand in this long and exhausting struggle? That is an ideological and political question.
The answer is in the eye of the beholder. There are those who see it, especially US President Barack Obama and his administration, as a victory for the West and the United States: the submission of Iran to reducing its nuclear program and preventing it from building a nuclear weapon.
However, Israel, the Arab nations and some European countries are pouting and consider the agreement to be a surrender on the part of the United States to Iran, which agreed to the deal only after it had already guaranteed for itself the technology, materials and equipment that would allow it to remain on the nuclear threshold with the bomb within reach. Essentially, the removal of the sanctions will give Iran approximately $100 billion that had been frozen in its accounts abroad and the right to export an additional half a million oil barrels per day.
Expectations are soaring in Iran.
President Hussein Rouhani has promised that 2016 will be “a year of economic prosperity.” Although the lifting of the sanctions against Iran is a blessing, it is fraught with risks to the regime and could leave the high expectations disappointed.
The Iranian economy is based primarily on income from oil exports.
The export of an additional half a million barrels a day will flood the international market, further reducing the price of oil, which has already gone down to under $30 a barrel. In short, Iran’s oil revenue will be a lot smaller than Iran had expected it to be during the nuclear deal negotiations. The income will not be sufficient for all the ambitious plans the Iranian government has in store to improve the economy and relieve the pressure on its citizens.
The Iranian government will need to prioritize its decisions and will have difficulty fulfilling all the expectations and demands of the military and the Revolutionary Guard, as well as the organizations that rely on it for funding, such as Hezbollah, to upgrade its outdated military equipment as Israel had feared it would.
Israeli leaders have expressed concerns about the expected shopping spree of the Iranian military and its proxies, which may bring more instability and terrorism sponsorship to the regime. However, they deliberately tend to forget mentioning that Israel remains the strongest military power in the Middle East and beyond, as the outgoing head of the Mossad, Tamir Pardo, said recently in his farewell interview: Iran and Hezbollah are bleeding in the regional battlefields of Syria, Iraq and Yemen, and Israel retains its monopoly on nuclear weapons, according to foreign reports.
Furthermore, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, which actually serves as a state within a state and controls at least 30 percent of the Iranian economy, fears that investments from Western companies in Iran will lessen their economic power and influence and strengthen the private sector.
The Revolutionary Guard, like the extremist religious clerics and the rest of the conservative hard-liners in Iran, are also very worried that the opening of the Iranian market to Western investors will bring Western influences into the country that the middle class, especially the youth, will welcome. The hard-liners fear that economic change and openness will bring ideas such as democracy, human rights and sexual permissiveness, which will w

The Iranian Embassy siege took place from 30 April to 5 May 1980, after a group of six armed men stormed the Iranian embassy in South Kensington, London. The gunmen took 26 people hostage—mostly embassy staff, but several visitors and a police officer, who had been guarding the embassy, were also held. The hostage-takers, members of an Iranian Arab group campaigning for Arab national sovereignty in the southern region of Khūzestān Province, demanded the release of Arab prisoners from jails in Khūzestān and their own safe passage out of the United Kingdom.
The British government quickly resolved that safe passage would not be granted, and a siege ensued. Over the following days, police negotiators secured the release of five hostages in exchange for minor concessions, such as the broadcasting of the hostage-takers' demands on British television.
By the sixth day of the siege the gunmen had become increasingly frustrated at the lack of progress in meeting their demands. That evening, they killed one of the hostages and threw his body out of the embassy. As a result, the British government ordered the Special Air Service (SAS), a special forces regiment of the British Army, to conduct an assault to rescue the remaining hostages. Shortly afterwards, soldiers abseiled from the roof of the building and forced entry through the windows. During the 17-minute raid, the SAS rescued all but one of the remaining hostages, and killed five of the six terrorists. The soldiers subsequently faced accusations that they unnecessarily killed two of the terrorists, but an inquest into the deaths eventually cleared the SAS of any wrongdoing. The remaining terrorist was prosecuted and served 27 years in British prisons.
The hostage-takers and their cause were largely forgotten after the Iran–Iraq War broke out later in 1980 and the hostage crisis in Tehran continued until January 1981. However, the operation brought the SAS to the public eye for the first time and bolstered the reputation of Margaret Thatcher, the Prime Minister. The Iranian Embassy siege took place from 30 April to 5 May 1980, after a group of six armed men stormed the Iranian embassy in South Kensington, London. The gunmen took 26 people hostage—mostly embassy staff, but several visitors and a police officer, who had been guarding the embassy, were also held. The hostage-takers, members of an Iranian Arab group campaigning for Arab national sovereignty in the southern region of Khūzestān Province, demanded the release of Arab prisoners from jails in Khūzestān and their own safe passage out of the United Kingdom.
The British government quickly resolved that safe passage would not be granted, and a siege ensued. Over the following days, police negotiators secured the release of five hostages in exchange for minor concessions, such as the broadcasting of the hostage-takers' demands on British television.
By the sixth day of the siege the gunmen had become increasingly frustrated at the lack of progress in meeting their demands. That evening, they killed one of the hostages and threw his body out of the embassy. As a result, the British government ordered the Special Air Service (SAS), a special forces regiment of the British Army, to conduct an assault to rescue the remaining hostages. Shortly afterwards, soldiers abseiled from the roof of the building and forced entry through the windows. During the 17-minute raid, the SAS rescued all but one of the remaining hostages, and killed five of the six terrorists. The soldiers subsequently faced accusations that they unnecessarily killed two of the terrorists, but an inquest into the deaths eventually cleared the SAS of any wrongdoing. The remaining terrorist was prosecuted and served 27 years in British prisons.
The hostage-takers and their cause were largely forgotten after the Iran–Iraq War broke out later in 1980 and the hostage crisis in Tehran continued until January 1981. However, the operation brought the SAS to the public eye for the first time and bolstered the reputation of Margaret Thatcher, the Prime Minister.
