Emperor Constantine the Great
Year 314 (CCCXIV) was a common year starting on Friday (link will display the full calendar) of the Julian calendar. At the time, it was known as the Year of the Consulship of Rufius and Annianus (or, less frequently, year 1067 Ab urbe condita). The denomination 314 for this year has been used since the early medieval period, when the Anno Domini calendar era became the prevalent method in Europe for naming years.

A large Pictish raid southwards is attempted.
January 11 – Pope Miltiades' reign ends.
January 31 – Pope Sylvester I succeeds Pope Miltiades as the 33rd pope.
August 30 – Council of Arles: Confirms the pronouncement of Donatism as a schism, and passes other canons.

Armenian Patriarch Nourhan Manougian arrived in the West Bank town of Bethlehem on Saturday, to give his blessing to the faithful ahead of the Christmas Eve mass.
The patriarch arrived from Jerusalem to a colourful welcome at Manger Square, outside the Church of the Nativity.
Armenians worldwide celebrate Christmas on 6 January according to the revised Julian calendar.
However, the small Armenian community in the Holy Land uses the old Julian calendar to determine the date of religious feasts.
Meanwhile, Greek-Orthodox pilgrims gathered along the banks of the River Jordan for the Theophany, or Epiphany, ceremony which commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ.
Thousands of believers from the Palestinian territories, Israel and abroad flocked to the place known as Qasr el-Yahud, on the Israeli border with Jordan.
Biblical scholars say John the Baptist baptised his cousin Jesus at this spot, close to where the Jordan flows into the Dead Sea.
It is the third most important site in Christianity after the Church of the Nativity and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Following tradition, the ceremony was led by the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, Theophilos III, who released white doves before throwing a cross wrapped in a branch of basil into the river's waters.
