This episode presents the French and American efforts to build a canal through Panama to link the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. The first attempt to construct the canal by Ferdinand de Lesseps, the builder of the Suez Canal, was abandoned because of tropical diseases (which killed over 22,000 men) and the difficulty of constructing a sea-level canal through the mountains. The Panama Canal is a 77.1-kilometre (48 mi) ship canal in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean (via the Caribbean Sea) to the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for international maritime trade. There are locks at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal, 26 metres (85 ft) above sea level. The current locks are 33.5 metres (110 ft) wide. A third, wider lane of locks is currently under construction and is due to open in 2016.
France began work on the canal in 1881, but had to stop because of engineering problems and high mortality due to disease. The United States took over the project in 1904, and took a decade to complete the canal, which was officially opened on August 15, 1914. One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, the Panama Canal shortcut greatly reduced the time for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, enabling them to avoid the lengthy, hazardous Cape Horn route around the southernmost tip of South America via the Drake Passage or Strait of Magellan. The shorter, faster, and safer route to the U.S. West Coast and to nations in and around the Pacific Ocean allowed those places to become more integrated with the world economy. It takes between 20 and 30 hours to traverse the canal.
During construction, ownership of the territory that is now the Panama Canal was first Colombian, then French, and then American. The US continued to control the canal and surrounding Panama Canal Zone until the 1977 Torrijos–Carter Treaties provided for handover to Panama. After a period of joint American–Panamanian control, the canal was taken over by the Panamanian government in 1999, and is now managed and operated by the Panama Canal Authority, a Panamanian government agency.
Annual traffic has risen from about 1,000 ships in 1914, when the canal opened, to 14,702 vessels in 2008, the latter measuring a total of 309.6 million Panama Canal/Universal Measurement System (PC/UMS) tons. By 2008, more than 815,000 vessels had passed through the canal; the largest ships that can transit the canal today are called Panamax. The American Society of Civil Engineers has named the Panama Canal one of the seven wonders of the modern world.

Check out this Crocodile picture that was sent to me from billschannel viewer Caroline in Poland…
It was from a site I can’t even pronounce, but the translation here basically says “monster Found in Panama Canal…
But unfortunately that’s all it says… so there is no way to confirm the authenticity of this picture.
There are some Youtube channels claiming it is the biggest Crocodile ever found.
People I know a lot of you want me to say things are true, but it is just so unusual to find a claim like this that I highly doubt it.
Now from the looks of it, this really is Panama but there is no way to pinpoint exactly where, but one thing is for sure, this is a case of forced perspective. The crocodile is a lot closer to us than the people are.
The giveaway is this soldier - he is too low in relation to the crocodile… and the reason for it is simple. The crock is laying on the back of a flat be truck of some kind.
I know, when you first look at the picture you think the crock is on the ground. But it’s actually up on a truck.
It’s size is hard to figure out. The biggest croc in world was Lolong, a saltwater croc found in the Philippines. Lolong was measured at 20 ft 3 in (6.17 m), and weighed 2,370 lbs (1,075 kg).
I don’t know how big this one is… but I highly doubt it is that big!
On a hunch, I switched by internet to Spanish, and came up with this news report from Panama.
The story loosely translates to that the Crocodile was found in the Four Altos sector of Colon Provence in panama. The picture shows the Crocodile being moved by Panamas National Environmental Authority (ANAM) to Lake Gatun. The story says the crcodiles name is Juancho, an is approximately 3 meters long.
Here’s another angle of the same picture and I want to thank Caroline for sending me this tip! So thanks Caroline!

Panama Canal - premieres 10.15pm, Tuesday 19 November on PBS America (Sky 534 | Virgin Media 243 | pbsamerica.co.uk)
On August 15, 1914, the Panama Canal opened, connecting the world's two largest oceans. Stephen Ives' documentary celebrates one of the world's most daring technological achievements.
The French began the canal in 1880, but were ultimately beaten by the enormity of the task and the virulence of the endemic tropical diseases. They left behind not only a partially completed canal, but also a mountain of debt. It was not until 1904 that America took over the project, having formally recognized the new country of Panama. There followed ten years of ceaseless toil, costing over 350 million dollars and an estimated 5,000 lives. The story of the canal features a fascinating cast of colourful characters, including Ferdinand De Lesseps, the French engineer who completed the Suez Canal but was forced to admit defeat in Panama, and William Gorgas, the army doctor who instituted a revolutionary public health campaign that virtually eradicated yellow fever. The film also delves into the lives of the thousands of workers, rigidly segregated by race, who left their homes to sign on for an unprecedented adventure. Using archive photographs and footage, rare interviews with canal workers and first-hand accounts of life in the Canal Zone, this film recalls one of the biggest construction projects in history.

Using archive photographs and footage, rare interviews with canal workers and first-hand accounts of life in the Canal Zone, this film recalls one of the biggest construction projects in history.

The Panama Canal has taken another important step forward toward the completion of the Expansion Program as it begins to fill the lower chamber of its new Atlantic locks.
During an initial phase of filling, which will take approximately five days, the Canal will gradually raise the water level within the lower chambers of the new locks, pumping in approximately 50 thousand cubic meters of water per hour from Gatun Lake. This will allow for the testing of the first gates.
The same process will then fill the rest of the Atlantic sections of locks, reaching a water level of 27 meters above sea level. Tests and inspections are expected to take approximately four months.

Widening the Panama Canal – Extreme Engineering
The size of ships that can transit the canal, dubbed Panamax, is conscribed largely by the locks, which require ships to be less than 110 ft (33.53 m) wide and 1,050 ft (320.04 m) long, and have a draft of less than 41.2 ft (12.56 m) deep.
All of the canal-widening studies since the 1930s have determined that the best way to increase canal capacity and allow the Panamanian maritime route to continue to grow is by building a third set of locks larger than the 1914 locks. (The U.S. began excavations for new locks in 1939, but abandoned them in 1942 because of World War II.[1]) This conclusion was again reached in the 1980s by the tripartite commission formed by Panama, Japan, and the United States. More recently, the studies developed by the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) for its 2025 master plan confirm that a third, larger set of locks is the most suitable, profitable, and environmentally responsible path.
Torrijos, in an April 24, 2006, speech announcing the project, said that “to say it in a graphic manner, [the canal] is like our ‘petroleum’. Just like the petroleum that hasn’t been extracted is worthless, and that in order to extract it you have to invest in infrastructure; the canal requires to expand its capacity to absorb the growing demand of cargo and generate more wealth for Panamanians”.
Cargo volume
The Panama Canal Authority predicts that cargo volume transiting the canal will grow an average of 3 percent per year, doubling the 2005 tonnage by 2025. Allowing larger vessels will move more cargo per transit and gallon of water used.
Historically, the dry and liquid bulk segments have generated most of the canal’s revenues. Bulk cargo includes dry goods, such as grains (corn, soy, and wheat, among others), minerals, fertilizers, coal, and liquid goods, such as chemical products, propane gas, crude oil, and oil derivatives. Recently, the containerized cargo segment has replaced the dry bulk segment as the canal’s main income generator, moving it to second place. On the other hand, the vehicle carriers segment has become the third-largest income generator, replacing the liquid bulk segment. Shipping industry analyses conducted by the ACP and top industry experts indicate that the canal expansion would be beneficial to both the canal and its users because of the demand that will be served by allowing the transit of more tonnage.

Panama City is a very multicultural place, with large populations from many different parts of the world. Spanish is spoken by most, and many speak some form of English. Customer service is slowly improving, and surprisingly dismal in hotels. However, on the streets Panamanians are for the most part extremely friendly and helpful and would love to give you some advice. There's great shopping, from high-end stores in the malls around Paitilla and in the banking district around Via Espana, to veritable bargains around La Central (Central Avenue, now turned into a pedestrian walkway) and the Los Pueblos outdoor mall. You can find many ethnic stores (mostly Chinese and Indian), in certain parts of the City.

Panama Canal, An absolute must if you're in Panama City. The easiest and cheapest way is to go to the Miraflores locks, watch the huge boats go by and visit its very modern and informative visitor's center with a museum, a movie theater and a fancy restaurant (USD25 for the lunch buffet). A one way cab to Miraflores locks should cost around 6 USD. By metrobus from Albrock, every hour, for $0.25, from 6:00am to 5:00pm. Last bus leaves Miraflores at 5:00pm.You can also take a luxury train along the canal to Colón, or obviously take a boat! Prices Miraflores locks and museum: adults $15, students $10.
Casco Viejo is the historic part of town, where you will find many colonial style government buildings, cathedrals and museums including a Canal Museum. It is currently under massive renovation, with crumbling shacks next to beautifully restored colonial buildings. There are a number of accommodation options in Casco ranging from hostel pricing up to very expensive colonial suites. The area hosts a large number of eclectic events ranging from operas and musicals at the national theatre to block parties and fashion catwalks in the open plazas. Casco Viejo also offers some of the finest dining options in Panama City.
Panama Viejo The site of the ruins of the original city of Panama that was sacked by the pirate Henry Morgan in the 1600s. The city was later moved to Casco Viejo. Today Panama Viejo is home to one of Panama's national parks with the buildings left in unrestored states. It is well worth the visit but read the safety warnings and ask park employees about where it is safe to visit as the park is surrounded outside by one of the city's dangerous areas.
Amador Causeway. The Amador Causeway connects the three islands to the mainland. From the causeway, there is a lovely view of Panama City, and the Puente de las Americas. Many Panamanians like to spend their weekends jogging, riding a bicycle or roller-blading down the causeway, or having a meal or drinks in one of the many restaurants and bars on the islands. Bikes are available to rent in many different varieties including recumbents and multi-person bicycles, starting at about $3.50 per hour. From the causeway you can also arrange day trips by ferry to one of the surrounding islands with boats leaving early in the morning.
Mi Pueblitos. The pretty deserted museum (entrance free) on the slopes of Cerro Ancon showcases the different ethnicities of Panama. There are several artisans producing curios. The outdoor museum is close in proximity to El Chorrillo so be very careful about straying outside of boundaries or into unsupervised areas. Upon last visit it was not recommended to climb Cerro Ancon.
Biomuseo (Biodiversity Museum: Panama Bridge of Life), Building 136, Amador Causeway Apartado 0843-02931, Panama, 830 - 6700, The Biodiversity Museum: Panama Bridge of Life (also known as Biomuseo) is located on the Amador Causeway in Panama City, Panama. It was designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry. This is Gehry's first design for Latin America.

7 Fascinating Facts About the Panama Canal
============================
1. The idea for a canal across Panama dates back to the 16th century.
In 1513, Spanish explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa became the first European to discover that the Isthmus of Panama was just a slim land bridge separating the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Balboa’s discovery sparked a search for a natural waterway linking the two oceans. In 1534, after no such passage across the isthmus had been found, Charles V, the Holy Roman emperor, ordered a survey to determine if one could be built, but the surveyors eventually decided that construction of a ship canal was impossible.
2. The men behind the Suez Canal and Eiffel Tower were convicted in connection with failed effort to build a canal.
In the ensuing centuries, various nations considered developing a Panamanian canal but a serious attempt wasn’t made until the 1880s. In 1881, a French company headed by Ferdinand de Lesseps, a former diplomat who developed Egypt’s Suez Canal, began digging a canal across Panama. The project was plagued by poor planning, engineering problems and tropical diseases that killed thousands of workers. De Lesseps intended to build the canal at sea level, without locks, like the Suez Canal, but the excavation process proved far more difficult than anticipated. Gustave Eiffel, who designed the famous tower in Paris that bears his name, was then hired to create locks for the canal; however, the De Lesseps-led company went bankrupt in 1889. At the time, the French had sunk more than $260 million into the canal venture and excavated more than 70 million cubic yards of earth.
The canal venture’s collapse caused a major scandal in France. De Lesseps and his son Charles, along with Eiffel and several other company executives, were indicted on fraud and mismanagement charges. In 1893, the men were found guilty, sentenced to prison and fined, although the sentences were overturned. After the scandal, Eiffel retired from business and devoted himself to scientific research; Ferdinand de Lesseps died in 1994. That same year, a new French company was formed to take over the assets of the bankrupt business and continue the canal; however, this second firm soon abandoned the endeavor as well.
3. America originally wanted to build a canal in Nicaragua, not Panama.
Throughout the 1800s, the United States, which wanted a canal linking the Atlantic and Pacific for economic and military reasons, considered Nicaragua a more feasible location than Panama. However, that view shifted thanks in part to the efforts of Philippe-Jean Bunau-Varilla, a French engineer who had been involved in both of France’s canal projects. In the late 1890s Bunau-Varilla began lobbying American lawmakers to buy the French canal assets in Panama, and eventually convinced a number of them that Nicaragua had dangerous volcanoes, making Panama the safer choice.
4. More than 25,000 workers died during the canal’s construction.
The canal builders had to contend with a variety of obstacles, including challenging terrain, hot, humid weather, heavy rainfall and rampant tropical diseases. The earlier French attempts had led to the deaths of more than 20,000 workers and America’s efforts fared little better; between 1904 and 1913 some 5,600 workers died due to disease or accidents.
5. Between 13,000 and 14,000 ships use the canal every year.
American ships use the canal the most, followed by those from China, Chile, Japan, Colombia and South Korea. Every vessel that transits the canal must pay a toll based on its size and cargo volume. Tolls for the largest ships can run about $450,000. The smallest toll ever paid was 36 cents, plunked down in 1928 by American adventurer Richard Halliburton, who swam the canal. Today, some $1.8 billion in tolls are collected annually.
6. The United States transferred control of the canal to Panama in 1999.
In the years after the canal opened, tensions increased between America and Panama over control of the canal and the surrounding Canal Zone. In 1964, Panamanians rioted after being prevented from flying their nation’s flag next to a U.S. flag in the Canal Zone. In the aftermath of the violence, Panama temporarily broke off diplomatic relations with the United States. In 1977
7. The canal is being expanded to handle today’s megaships.
In 2007, work began on a $5.25 billion expansion project that will enable the canal to handle post-Panamax ships; that is, those exceeding the dimensions of so-called Panamax vessels, built to fit through the canal, whose locks are 110 feet wide and 1,000 feet long. The expanded canal will be able to handle cargo vessels carrying 14,000 20-foot containers, nearly three times the amount currently accommodated.

The expanded canal will be able to handle cargo vessels carrying 14,000 20-foot containers, nearly three times the amount currently accommodated.

Panama is a country in Central America with coastlines on both the Caribbean Sea and the North Pacific Ocean, with Colombia (and South America) to the southeast and Costa Rica (and North America) to the northwest. It's strategically located on the isthmus that forms the land bridge connecting North and South America and controls the Panama Canal that links the North Atlantic Ocean via the Caribbean Sea with the North Pacific Ocean, one of the most important shipping routes in the world.
Costa Rica (Spanish: Costa Rica or República de Costa Rica, pronounced [reˈpuβlika ðe ˈkosta ˈrika]) is a small country in Central America bordered by Nicaragua to the north, Panama to the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and the Caribbean Sea to the east.

The San Blas Islands of Panama is an Archipielago of 365 Islands of the north coast of the Panama Isthmus, east of the Panama Canal, which only 49 are inhabited. Home to the Kuna Indians, they are a part of the Comarca Kuna Yala along the Caribbean coast of Panama.
The San Blas islands are a bit of unspoiled Caribbean paradise. Snorkeling is absolutely fantastic with many corals and lots of fish.
There are two options to go to San blas Islands, such as taking an airplane or by 4X4 traveling between the CORDILLERAS, crossing rivers and then take you by Indians canoes (little boat) to preference islands.
The accommodation is still pretty basic. It usually consists of a small number of cabins and little restaurant. Don't expect things the facilities of the hotels at the city.
The rate varies following the number of people and the number of days that was stayed in the island of San Blas. It includes 3 meals of the day, terrestrial transport, transport in boat and Tours around the near islands.
Villa Michelle, a Travel Guide in Panama, can take to know the paradise of the islands of San Blas.
