True MVPs:

In 1942, the Empire of Japan invaded the Australian-administered territories of the New Guinea Mandate. New Guinea was strategically important because it was a major landmass to the immediate north of Australia. This film shows us the bitter struggle of the Australian and American soldiers to take New Guinea in World War 2.
Battle for New Guinea | 1942-1945 | Australian & American Soldiers in Action | WW2 Documentary Film
About the New Guinea campaign:
The New Guinea campaign of the Pacific War lasted from January 1942 until the end of the war in August 1945. In the initial phase in 1942, the Empire of Japan invaded the Australian-administered territories of the New Guinea Mandate (23 January) and Papua (8 March) and overran western New Guinea (beginning 29/30 March), which was a part of the Netherlands East Indies. In the second phase, the Allies cleared the Japanese first from Papua, then the Mandate and finally from the Dutch colony.
New Guinea was strategically important because it was a major landmass to the immediate north of Australia. Its large land area provided locations for large land, air and naval bases.
The campaign between Allied and Japanese forces commenced with the Japanese assault on Rabaul on 23 January 1942. Rabaul became the forward base for the Japanese campaigns in mainland New Guinea, including the pivotal Kokoda Track campaign of July 1942 – January 1943, and the Battle of Buna-Gona. Fighting in some parts of New Guinea continued until the war ended in August 1945.
General Douglas MacArthur as Supreme Commander in the South West Pacific Area, led the Allied forces. The Japanese 8th Area Army, under General Hitoshi Imamura, was responsible for both the New Guinea and Solomon Islands campaigns. The Japanese 18th Army, under Lieutenant General Hatazo Adachi, was responsible for Japanese operations on mainland New Guinea.
Liberating New Guinea:
After bombing the Australian harbour of Darwin in 1942, the Japanese move their headquarters to Buna on the north coast of what is now Papua New Guinea and the headquarters of the Allies is set up in Port Moresby on the other side. These towns are divided by the steep Owen Stanley mountain range. The two towns are connected by the Kokoda track across the mountains. Australian troops successfully defend Port Moresby along this trail, when the Japanese try to invade from the north coast. To get the advantage, the Australian carved out 4000 steps into the mountain side.
The American army lands on New Guinea in January 1943 and starts a major attack. However, it takes up until 1944 before the Americans can advance along the northern coast of New Guinea from Hollandia to Biak and Manokwari and on to the North Moluccas (Morotai) from where they attack the Philippines in October 1944. In order to recapture New Guinea, the Allied Forces need to drive the Japanese off along 2000 km of fortified coast line. During this battle 13000 Japanese soldiers die and on the Australian and American side there are respectively 2100 and 2000 casualties.

Its large land area provided locations for large land, air and naval bases.[citation needed]
MacArthur was based in Melbourne, Brisbane and Manila. The Japanese 8th Area Army, under General Hitoshi Imamura, was responsible for both the New Guinea and Solomon Islands campaigns. Imamura was based at Rabaul. The Japanese 18th Army, under Lieutenant General Hatazō Adachi, was responsible for Japanese operations on mainland New Guinea.

The Dani people, also spelled Ndani, and sometimes conflated with the Lani group to the west, are a people from the central highlands of western New Guinea (the Indonesian province of Papua).
They are one of the most populous tribes in the highlands, and are found spread out through the highlands. The Dani are one of the most well-known ethnic groups in Papua, due to the relatively numerous tourists who visit the Baliem Valley area where they predominate. "Ndani" is the name given to the Baliem Valley people by the Moni people, and, while they don't call themselves Dani, they have been known as such since the 1926 Smithsonian Institution-Dutch Colonial Government expedition to New Guinea under Matthew Stirling

The Baliem Valley - an escape into the past (a valley in Irian Jaya, the western half of New Guinea in Indonesia), Slovenian film, 1993 on DVD format, Runtime: 70 min
It shows the Dani tribesmen who wear penis sheaths made of a cultivated gourd who live in compounds of huts made from trees and mud. One of the more unusual customs is to amputate one or two joints of a woman's finger to calm evil spirits when a close relative dies. We see a mummified head of the tribe whom the Dani people consult when in trouble and experience the tribal fighting for a girl between the opposing groups. In this part of the world we witness the ever more intervention by the Indonesian government with transmigration of Muslims from the island of Java and the changing ethnic composition of the population of the valley. The place is accessible only by planes as there are no roads. The Dani are becoming increasingly dependent on the various items offered by the present time: they still use stone implements to cultivate the soil and the matches replace the protector of the eternal flame in the traditional Dani house (honay). At the market in Wamena, the centre of the valley, we can still see the disappearing "naked". The film is therefore one of the last testimonies of the time, which disappears in the Stone Age in this valley.

Operation Cartwheel (1943–1944) was a major military strategy for the Allies in the Pacific theater of World War II. Cartwheel was a twin-axis[clarification needed] of advance operation, aimed at militarily neutralizing the major Japanese base at Rabaul. The operation was directed by the Supreme Allied Commander in the South West Pacific Area (SWPA)—General Douglas MacArthur—whose forces advanced along the northeast coast of New Guinea and occupied nearby islands. Allied forces from the Pacific Ocean Areas command—under Admiral Chester W. Nimitz—advanced through the Solomon Islands toward Bougainville. The Allied forces involved were from Australia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the US and various Pacific Islands...
Background to Operation Cartwheel
Japanese forces had captured Rabaul, on New Britain, in the Territory of New Guinea, from Australian forces in February 1942 and turned it into their major forward base in the South Pacific, and the main obstacle in the two Allied theaters. MacArthur formulated a strategic outline, the Elkton Plan, to capture Rabaul from bases in Australia and New Guinea. Admiral Ernest J. King, the Chief of Naval Operations, proposed a plan with similar elements but under Navy command. Army Chief of Staff George C. Marshall, whose main goal was for the U.S. to concentrate its efforts against Nazi Germany in Europe and not against the Japanese in the Pacific, proposed a compromise plan in which the task would be divided into three stages, the first under Navy command and the second two under MacArthur's direction and the control of the Army. This strategic plan, which was never formally adopted by the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff but which was ultimately implemented, called for:
- Capture of Tulagi (later Guadalcanal) and the Santa Cruz Islands (Operation Watchtower)
- Capture of the northeast coast of New Guinea and the central Solomons
- Reduction of Rabaul and related bases
The protracted battle for Guadalcanal—followed by the unopposed seizure of the Russell Islands (Operation Cleanslate) on 21 February 1943—resulted in Japanese attempts to reinforce the area by sea. MacArthur's air forces countered in the Battle of the Bismarck Sea from 2–5 March 1943. The disastrous losses suffered by the Japanese prompted Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto to initiate I Go (Operation 'I'), a series of air attacks against Allied airfields and shipping at both Guadalcanal and New Guinea, which ultimately resulted in Yamamoto's death on 18 April 1943.
Implementation of Cartwheel
MacArthur had presented Elkton III, his revised plan for taking Rabaul before 1944, on 12 February 1943. It called for an attack by MacArthur against northeast New Guinea and western New Britain, and by Admiral William F. Halsey, Jr. (then in command of the South Pacific Area) against the central Solomons. This plan required seven more divisions than were already in the theater, raising objections from the British. The Joint Chiefs responded with a directive that approved the plan using forces already in the theater or en route to it, and delaying its implementation by 60 days. Elkton III then became Operation Cartwheel.
Cartwheel operations
The Cartwheel plan identified 13 proposed subordinate operations and set a timetable for their launching. Of the 13, Rabaul, Kavieng, and Kolombangara were eventually eliminated as too costly and unnecessary, and 10 were actually undertaken...
In the midst of Operation Cartwheel, the Joint Chiefs met with President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill at the Quadrant Conference in Quebec in August 1943. There, the decision was made to bypass and isolate Rabaul rather than attempting to capture the base...
The campaign—which stretched into 1944—showed the effectiveness of a strategy which avoided major concentrations of enemy forces and instead aimed at severing the Japanese lines of communication...

Among the high peaks of Papua New Guinea, carpeted with thick forests, inhabit ethnics that inspired terrible stories to Western sailors turn of the century. They are the “head cutters”, warlike cannibals of closed clans. We will see its colorful war rituals and will know their lifestyles attached to nature. On the Sepik river we will find the exuberant nature of the region and the men who worship the crocodile, flagship species from which they seek the possession of its spirit through frenzied rites and painful scars tattoos they do in their bodies as an imitation of this great reptile skin.

West Papua or Western New Guinea is part of Indonesia consisting of the western half of the island of New Guinea and smaller islands to its west. The region is administered as two provinces: Papua and West Papua. The eastern half of New Guinea is the country of Papua New Guinea. The population of approximately 3.6 million comprises ethnic Papuans, Melanesians, and Austronesians. The region is predominantly dense forest where numerous traditional tribes live such as the Dani of the Baliem Valley, although the majority of the population live in or near coastal areas. The largest city in the region is Jayapura. The official and most commonly spoken language is Indonesian. Estimates of the number of tribal languages in the region range from 200 to over 700, with the most widely spoken including Dani, Yali, Ekari and Biak. The predominant religion is Christianity followed by Islam. The main industries include agriculture, fishing, oil production, and mining.
Human habitation is estimated to have begun between 42,000 and 48,000 years ago. The Netherlands claimed the region and commenced missionary work in the nineteenth century. The region was annexed by Indonesia in the 1960s. Following the 1998 commencement of reforms across Indonesia, Papua and other Indonesian provinces received greater regional autonomy. In 2001, "Special Autonomy" status was granted to Papua province, although to date, implementation has been partial and often criticised. The region was administered as a single province until 2003, when it was split into the provinces of Papua and West Papua.

Facts : 1 Early history The continent of Sahul before the rising ocean sundered Australia and New Guinea after the last ice age The first inhabitants of New Guinea arrived at least 50,000 years ago, having travelled through the south-east Asian peninsula
Facts : 2 These first inhabitants, from whom the Papuan people are probably descended, adapted to the range of ecologies and, in time, developed one of the earliest known agricultures
Facts : 3 Remains of this agricultural system, in the form of ancient irrigation systems in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, are being studied by archaeologists
Facts : 4 This work is still in its early stages, so there is still uncertainty as to precisely what crop was being grown, or when/where agriculture arose
Facts : 5 Complex mulches, crop rotations and tillages are used in rotation on terraces with complex irrigation systems
Facts : 6 Western agronomists still do not understand all of the practices, and it has been noted that native gardeners are as, or even more, successful than most scientific farmers in raising certain crops
Facts : 7 There is evidence that New Guinea gardeners invented crop rotation well before western Europeans
Facts : 8 A unique feature of New Guinea permaculture is the silviculture of Casuarina oligodon, a tall, sturdy native ironwood tree, suited to use for timber and fuel, with root nodules that fix nitrogen
Facts : 9 Pollen studies show that it was adopted during an ancient period of extreme deforestation
Facts : 10 In more recent millennia, another wave of people arrived on the shores of New Guinea
Facts : 11 These were the Austronesian people, who had spread down from Taiwan, through the South-east Asian archipelago, colonising many of the islands on the way
Facts : 12 The Austronesian people had technology and skills extremely well adapted to ocean voyaging and Austronesian language speaking people are present along much of the coastal areas and islands of New Guinea
Facts : 13 These Austronesian migrants are considered the ancestors of most people in insular Southeast Asia, from Sumatra and Java to Borneo and Sulawesi, as well as coastal new Guinea

Papua and New Guinea Travel
Papua New Guinea is an Oceanian country that occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and its offshore islands in Melanesia, a region of the southwestern Pacific Ocean north of Australia. Its capital, located along its southeastern coast, is Port Moresby. The western half of New Guinea forms the Indonesian provinces of Papua and West Papua.
Papua New Guinea is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world; 848 languages are listed for the country, of which 12 have no known living speakers.[9] Most of the population of over 7 million people live in customary communities, which are as diverse as the languages.[10] It is also one of the most rural, as only 18 percent of its people live in urban centres.[11] The country is one of the world's least explored, culturally and geographically, and many undiscovered species of plants and animals are thought to exist in the interior.[12]
Strong growth in Papua New Guinea's mining and resource sector led to the country becoming the sixth fastest-growing economy in the world in 2011,[13] although growth is expected to slow once major resource projects come on line in 2015.[14] Mining remains a major economic factor, however, with talks of resuming mining operations in the previously closed-off Panguna mine ongoing with the local and national governments.[15] Nearly 40 per cent of the population lives a self-sustainable natural lifestyle with no access to global capital.[16]
At the local level, the majority of the population still live in strong customary societies and – while social life is overlaid with traditional religious cosmologies and modern practices, including conventional primary education – customary subsistence-based agriculture remains fundamental.[10] These societies and clans are explicitly acknowledged within the nation's constitutional framework. The Papua New Guinea Constitution expresses the wish for "traditional villages and communities to remain as viable units of Papua New Guinean society"[17] and for active steps to be taken in their continuing importance to local and national community life.
At the national level, after being ruled by three external powers since 1884, Papua New Guinea established its sovereignty in 1975 following almost 60 years of Australian administration. It became a separate Commonwealth realm with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state and became a member of the Commonwealth of Nations in its own right.

"This detailed study of the Asmat, a cannibalistic society of western New Guinea, shows their use of religion and magic as tools for survival in a world they perceive as hostile and threatening. The centrality of trees in their religion is shown by scenes in which the Asmat carve a sacred "bis" pole from a mangrove tree to release spirits of the dead, and butcher and skin a sago palm as if it were human to release the starch that is the mainstay of their diet. The program explores many facets of the Asmat society linked to religious beliefs. Games the children play are designed to teach them skills of headhunting; during a feast, the coconut is consumed to symbolize eating the brains of one's enemy. Concluding segments of the program consider how economic development and modernization, including the government's ban on headhunting, will affect the Asmats' religious beliefs and practices, which are such an integral part of their total culture. Our bus stopped in Kundiwa for a lunch at an interesting hotel with native murals and tapestries. With my shotgun seat in front of the bus I was able captured the marvelous life along the road and laughed at the custom in which Nitin, our group leader, stop and bought this head band for making it through the pass as we entered the Eastern Highland Providence on our way to Goroka to our Pacific Garden Hotel that was our new home base. Once there I had fun trying to chase down butterflies that were hanging around the frontage road before the sun went down.

The panel discusses the past successes, and challenges ahead for Papua New Guinea. Panelists include Cecilia Nembou, Associate Professor of Management and Vice President, Divine Word University, Port Moresby; Benedict Imbun, Senior Lecturer, School of Business, Western Sydney University; Deane Woruba, PhD Student, Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment, Western Sydney University and; Franz Drees-Gross, World Bank Country Director for Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Islands.
In September 2015, Papua New Guinea celebrates 40 years of independence, providing an opportunity to reflect on how far the nation has come, and the challenges that lay ahead.
As the Pacific’s largest country by population, land and economic activity, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill believes PNG is “entering a period of change never experienced before”. The challenges ahead lie in ensuring all people benefit from PNG’s continued development, through improved education and employment opportunities, reliable infrastructure and high quality services.
PNG is also securing its role in the region as not just an economic leader, but as a driver of the broader regional policy agenda, engaging in numerous bilateral agreements with neighbors and hosting the APEC Forum in 2018. The nation has also recently hosted the Pacific Islands Games and the Pacific Islands Forum, the latter of which Prime Minister O’Neill has become Chair.
Throughout the discussion, the panelists consider many issues, including the viability of the Government’s 2050 vision plan; the importance of education to PNG’s development and; the place of agriculture in the nation’s evolving economy.

STORY: Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister Peter O'Neill met Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday (October 14) in Tokyo.
The pair discussed ways to strengthen economic relations and for Japanese companies to help build up Papua New Guinean industries, Japanese media reported.
"We consulted on how we can deliver specific results out of the comprehensive partnership. I'm mostly happy that we're able to come up with the joint message embodying fruitful outcomes of our discussions," Abe said in a joint news conference after the talks.
O'Neill called for more investment from Japanese companies.
"We welcome the large investments that Japanese companies and the large assistance that Japanese companies provide to the development of our country, which is, together, also influencing how we deliver those services to wider Pacific community," he said.
O'Neill visited Japan in May to attend the Seventh Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM7), a summit-level dialogue held every three years among Japan and the member states of the Pacific Island Forum (PIF) where leaders discuss various issues related to the environment, climate change, disaster management, human security and economic development.
At the end of PALM7, Abe pledged $450 million over the next three years to the Pacific Island nations to help them combat climate change.
Japanese media have reported that Abe also asked the Pacific Islands to support Japan's bid to enter the United Nations Security Council.
O'Neill also supported Japan's passage of controversial national security bills, which could let troops fight overseas for the first time since the end of World War Two.
"We extend our support to Japan for some of the legislation that it has passed recently, especially on peace and security. Japan is a strong partner in all global development agenda and peace and security, and we, Papua New Guinea, support that," O'Neill said.
The new legislation was the biggest change in Japan's defence policy since the creation of its post-war military in 1954, putting end to a long-standing ban on exercising the right of collective self-defence.
O'Neill, accompanied by his wife Lynda May Babao, also paid a courtesy visit to the Imperial Palace to meet Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko earlier on Wednesday.
O'Neill will meet Japanese university students and visit western Japan on Thursday (October 15) before he wraps his four-day trip to Japan on Friday (October 16).

Jean-Pierre Dutilleux Stated; "If the Toulambis are actors, we should give them a César Award."
The Toulambi
In the XXI century the team of Jean-Pierre Dutilleaux explorer and ethnographer had the privilege to contact in 1998, after many obstacles, with Los Toulambis a tribe that had never seen a white man, or had been involved with the outside world.
Jean-Pierre Dutilleux was born in Malmedy, Belgium is director, anthropologist, explorer and defender of Indian rights
In 1973 he made his first contact with the hostile tribe Txuccaramaes (those who hit with sticks strokes) of the Kayapo, the savage heart of Matto Grosso, there almost lost his life in the hands of the tribe, the chief Raoni saved his life .
Since then, Jean Pierre was dedicated to saving the territory of this tribe, of government of that country, making a world tour with the chief Raoni where senior leaders received, the nobility and Pope John Paul II
Raoni's message was "My name is Raoni, I am the chief of the Kayapo. People are destroying the forest, are wiping out wildlife, fatally wounding my people, killing the Earth. Help me, before it is too late! "
Dutellieux visited the most remote places in search of primitive tribes, such as the Toulambis living in the Stone Age and are being decimated by logging of their forests, and diseases like malaria.
Toulambi 1976 contact: fact or fable - BY PETER KRANZ
EXTRACTS FROM BELGIAN filmmaker Jean Pierre Dutilleux's first contact with a tribal people known as the Toulamis have recently been posted on Youtube.
This claimed first contact was said to have been as recently as 1976 and the extracts can be seen here and here.
The footage is moving and poetic and appears to be authentic. More information about Dutilleux's films can be found on his website here.
His film was first aired on French TV in the mid1990's. Perhaps because it has not been widely shown to English-speaking audiences, it has aroused keen interest and many favourable comments since its recent Youtube posting.
This controversial film also has been the subject of much scholarly debate in the Francophone world, and even threats of legal action.
It was severely criticised by French anthropologist and PNG specialist Pierre Lemonnier in his academic paper A la chasse à l'authentique (In pursuit of the real thing) published by Terrain, the European ethnological review in 1999, which is available here.
In this paper, Lemonnier points out that the Toulambis of the film are really the Ankave-Anga people from near Menyamya. The records indicate that these people were visited by at least six Australian government patrols between 1929 and 1972: 1929 Middleton; 1950 Chester, 1951 Mathieson; 1965 O'Brien; 1967 Police patrols; 1972 Meikle.
In fact Meikle found the people talking basic Tok Pisin learned at Menyamya.
Historical sources reveal that the so-called Toulambis had steel tools and western implements more than 40 years before their encounter with Dutilleux, and were regular visitors to the administrative center of Menyamya the early 1970's - which was only a few days walk for them.
This familiarity with the outside world is confirmed by ethnography, and in particular one Toulambi man spent two months in prison in Menyamya in the early '70's. Admittedly some remote groups may not have had regularly contact with the Australian administration before the 1960's, but they certainly did by the time Dutilleux encountered them.
When Lemonnier viewed the film for the first time he exclaimed: "I'm outraged!" He described the Dutilleux production as "untruthful, racist, revolting". Apparently Lemonnier recognised immediately the place where the fake "first encounter" had been filmed. The stream is known as New Year Creek, and the members of the "unknown tribe" probably walked for about a day from their settlement to reach the appointed well-lit meeting-place.
This had been conveniently cleared for the filming, with a few logs thrown into the creek so that the people could emerge confidently from the jungle (most unusual behaviour) and move naively towards the camera crew.
Lemonnier adds: "At that spot, they were about a four-day walk from an administrative centre with a schoolteacher, airstrip, radio, nurse and Seventh-Day Adventist preachers. Nearby, the navigable river Vailala enables the Papuans to reach the coast, where they exchange bark capes for tools."
For his criticism, Lemonnier faced a court case for slander in 1997, but the historical records support his case.
So how was the film made? Simple - the locals were paid for their performance and rehearsed in how to act their parts. In fact they were enterprising enough to have done this for several other 'first-contact' filmmakers before and after Dutilleux.
Interestingly, Jean-Pierre Dutilleux is also cited in the article, defending himself that:
"If the Toulambis are actors, we should give them a César Award."

Shortly after World War II, as Western missionaries began to penetrate the deep jungles and remote islands of Papua New Guinea, stories of a flying creature called the Ropen ("demon flyer") began to be reported. Duane Hodgkinson was stationed northwest of Lae, near Finschaven, PNG as part of the Army cavalry in 1944. About noon one day in August he was walking down a trail through a clearing in the forest when he was startled by a crashing in the brush. As he watched a large bird-like creature ponderously rose from the ground, circled and flew away. Hodgkinson, a pilot, estimated the wing-span to be about 20 ft. RopenHe clearly recalls the dark-gray coloration, long serpentine neck, beak, and distinctive head crest. Described as a nocturnal creature, the Ropen possesses two leathery wings like a bat, a long tail with a flange on the end, a beak filled with teeth, and razor-sharp claws. An intriguing sea chart dated 1595 warns mariners to beware of a variety of "sea monsters." It depicts two flying creatures with a long necks, headcrests, ribbed wings and fantastical tails (split on the end like a flipper) flying above the islands of New Guinea. One is even shown as having dermal bumps.

Unreported World travels to one of the most remote parts of the world, to investigate the growth of 'witch' murders in Papua New Guinea. More than fifty people accused of being witches were tortured and murdered last year in two provinces alone and the program reveals that the problem is now spreading from remote highland areas into the towns. Reporter Ramita Navai and producer Katherine Churcher meet the victims, the so called witch hunters and the police struggling to keep order.
The Unreported World team begins their journey in the Highland province of Simbu, a hotspot for witch-related murders. In the remote village of Koge, they uncover a number of burnt-out huts where locals tell them that more than thirty people were forced to flee after two of their female relatives were accused of being witches and killed
Moving on to the neighbouring province, Navai and Churcher meet a grandmother who says she was accused of being a witch after her husband died. She reveals that in the Highlands when someone dies the community thinks they must have been cursed by a witch and then looks for someone, generally a woman, to blame. Umame says she managed to escape after being slashed with a bush knife, but she has lost everything.
Still deep in the Highlands, the team tracks down a witch-doctor. She says her job is to deciding who in the community is a witch. But in a chilling twist, Navai uncovers that this witch-doctor is herself a survivor of a witch-hunt. She claims she was set free after she revealed, under torture, her skills at determining other witches.
The team travels to the capital of Simbu Province to meet the homicide detectives at the police station serving the whole of the area. They reveal that at least two-thirds of the murders they deal with are witchcraft-related. Navai and Churcher accompany the police to Giu village where in Nov 2008 a woman was accused of being a witch and murdered by an entire community. The police say they are under-resourced and lack the manpower to deal with the problem. People won't come forward as witnesses, as everyone backs the witch-killers, they tell Navai.
In Goroka, the capital of the Eastern Highlands Province, Navai meets Jack Urame - a leading expert on witch-killings. He explains that the belief in witches is an ancient custom, but that killings are on the increase. He says the changes occurring to traditional Papuan society with the introduction of western goods, money and education haven't been matched with a corresponding, modern form of social control provided by the government. Jealousies arise as some do better than others and people have resorted to their own ways of resolving disputes and resentments - namely through accusations of sorcery.
The team travels to a community meeting in Simbu Province set-up to try to resolve witch-hunt accusations peacefully. Navai sees local justice at work. It's raw and tense and the team is forced to leave as the meeting heats up.
Still in the Highlands they manage to track down two 'witch hunters'. Appearing anonymously, disguised by traditional head-wear, one of them produces a skull which he claims is of one of his victims and tells Navai that he is a guardian angel, protecting his community, and has no fear of police repercussions.
Ending up in Mt. Hagen, the third largest city in Papua New Guinea, the team discovers that witch-hunts are now spreading to towns. A witness reveals a shocking case of a woman burnt alive on tyres at a rubbish dump. It is the first case in the town. Perhaps more disturbing, the belief in witchcraft appears already well developed in the area. While the witness found the incident disturbing, he believes the woman needed to be killed or she would be a threat to the community. The practice of witch-killings appears to be going from strength to strength.

Full version of the critically acclaimed documentary Land of the Morning Star.
Made by Australian journalist Mark Worth, the film features rare archival film and eyewitness accounts. Worth spent much of his journalistic career reporting on the region before his sudden death in a hotel room in Jayapura shortly after this was broadcast on ABC in Australia in 2004.
Land of the Morning Star describes how for centuries the world has jostled for control of this rugged, isolated region, with its abundant natural resources and strategic position. It is an epic story of colonial ambitions, Cold-War sellouts and fervent nationalism.
The first outsiders to arrive were Macassans from the Malay Peninsula, looking for sandalwood, prized bird of paradise feathers and slaves. Next came Dutch explorers, traders, planters and missionaries.
When war came to the Pacific in 1941, the US chose Dutch New Guinea's capital Hollandia as its base of operations against the Japanese. Half a million soldiers passed through Hollandia, to fight some of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific war.
After the war, the Dutch reclaimed Papua, until US President John Kennedy persuaded them to hand over their colony to a newly independent Indonesia. Today, despite continuing Papuan resistance, Jakarta remains firmly in control.
Narrated by Rachel Griffiths, Land of the Morning Star explores the causes and realities of the troubles in a land just 100 kilometres to Australia's north.

The current Ebola outbreak in West Africa began in Guinea in December 2013. From there, it quickly spread to Liberia and Sierra Leone. Cases also appeared in Senegal and Nigeria, and there was another outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Today, Liberia is at the center of the epidemic, with more than 3,000 cases of infection. About half of them have been fatal.
As President Barack Obama announced that he would be sending American military personnel to West Africa to help combat the epidemic, VICE News traveled to Monrovia to spend time with those on the front lines of the outbreak.

SPLINTERS is the first feature length documentary film about the evolution of indigenous surfing in the developing nation of Papua New Guinea. In the 1980s an intrepid Australian pilot left behind a surfboard in the seaside village of Vanimo. Twenty years on, surfing is not only a pillar of village life but a means to prestige. With no access to economic or educational advancement, let alone running water and power, village life is hermetic. A spot on the Papua New Guinea national surfing team is the way to see the wider world; the only way.
Filmed in cinema veritéstyle, the film profiles several villagers in their quest to become professional surfers. Set at the crossroads of civilization in a land where cannibalism proceeded into the 20th century, the story is as much a tale of budding sportsmen chasing their dreams as it is the Old World fusing with the Modern World.
Angelus and Ezekiel are two friends destined for greatness but with distinct approaches to their goal of getting on the national surfing team. Self-assured and boisterous, Angelus is confident he is the best surfer in the nation while the talented yet gun shy Ezekiel lets his surfing do the talking. Fueled by glossy images in surfing magazines left behind by the odd-traveling Western surfer, the two young men are united in their fantasy of being paid wave riders. The female surfing prowess in Papua New Guinea is consolidated in one family. Lesley and Susan are sisters etching a new path in a male-dominated sport and a community where they are second-class citizens by simple virtue of their womanhood.
The upcoming inaugural Papua New Guinea National Surfing Titles is the ultimate ground for this surfing ensemble to prove its talent and will send the winner to Australia to train with world-class surfing athletes. This is the incipient step necessary to transform a humble villager to the first ever Papua New Guinean professional surfer. But, as with any scarce resource, fierce competition ensues and a rival village surf club will employ any means necessary to win.
Wrapped in a compelling visual aesthetic, SPLINTERS is at once a visceral dramatic narrative about a village grappling with its identity and young heroes using their surfboards to carry them to a better life.
