Magic Sam

Samuel "Magic Sam" Gene Maghett (February 14, 1937 – December 1, 1969) was an American Chicago blues musician. Maghett was born in Grenada, Mississippi, and learned to play the blues from listening to records by Muddy Waters and Little Walter. After moving to Chicago at the age of 19, he was signed by Cobra Records and became well known as a bluesman after his first record, "All Your Love" in 1957. He was known for his distinctive tremolo-guitar playing.

Life and career

After moving to Chicago in 1956, his guitar playing earned bookings at blues clubs on the West Side. Sam recorded for Cobra Records from 1957 to 1959, recording singles including "All Your Love" and "Easy Baby". They did not appear on the record charts, yet they had a profound influence, far beyond Chicago's guitarists and singers. Together with recordings by Otis Rush and Buddy Guy (also Cobra artists), they made a manifesto for a new kind of blues. Around this time Sam also worked briefly with Homesick James Williamson. Sam gained a following before being drafted into the U.S. Army. He served six months in prison for desertion and received a dishonorable discharge.

All Your Love (I Miss Loving)

"All Your Love (I Miss Loving)" or "All Your Love" is a blues song written and recorded in 1958 by Chicago blues guitarist Otis Rush. It is "the best-known and most covered of Rush's [authored] songs", with versions recorded by several blues and other artists. It was inspired by an earlier blues song and later influenced other popular songs.

Composition and recording

"All Your Love" is a moderate-tempo minor-key twelve-bar blues with Afro-Cuban rhythmic influences. An impromptu song "apparently dashed off ... in the car en route to Cobra's West Roosevelt Road studios", it borrows guitar lines and the arrangement from "Lucky Lou", a 1957 instrumental single by blues guitarist Jody Williams (Argo 5274). The song alternates between guitar and vocal sections, with an instrumental bridge performed as a faster-tempo twelve-bar shuffle featuring Rush's guitar solo.

The song was produced by Willie Dixon and features Rush on guitar and vocal, Dixon on bass, Ike Turner on second guitar), Little Brother Montgomery on piano, Harold Ashby and Jackie Brenston on saxophones, and Billy Gayles on drums. When "All Your Love" was released in 1958 on Cobra Records, it was Rush's last single for the label. Rush subsequently recorded several studio and live versions of the song, including one released on his Blues Interaction – Live in Japan 1986 album.

Johnnie Walker is a brand of Scotch whisky owned by Diageo that originated in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. It is the most widely distributed brand of blended Scotch whisky in the world, sold in almost every country, with annual sales of over 130 million bottles.

History

Originally known as Walker's Kilmarnock Whisky, the Johnnie Walker brand is a legacy left by John "Johnnie" Walker after he started to sell whisky in his grocer's shop in Ayrshire, Scotland. The brand became popular, but after Walker's death in 1857 it was his son Alexander Walker and grandson Alexander Walker II who were largely responsible for establishing the whisky as a popular brand. Under John Walker, whisky sales represented eight percent of the firm's income; by the time Alexander was ready to pass on the company to his own sons, that figure had increased to between 90 and 95 percent.

In Britain prior to 1860, it was illegal to sell blended whisky. During that time John Walker sold a number of whiskies—notably his own Walker's Kilmarnock. In 1865, John's son Alexander produced their first blend, Walker's Old Highland.
