This is the documentary that was completed by 2009 National History Day Senior Documentary Finalist, Lauren White. The documentary covers the artistic life, career and motivations of the lauded artist Ben Shahn, who is one of the originators of the "Social Realism" movement of the 20th Century. His paintings cover social issues ranging from the trial of Sacco and Vanzetti to the tribulations of the crew members of the "Lucky Dragon" and war time propaganda.
Ben Shahn was a major paint artist, muralist, and lithographer in the early 20th century. Between 1931 and 1938 he made important photographs at first in New York City then in the South for the Resettlement Administration. In 1938, as an employee of the Farm Security Administration, he photographed small towns in Ohio. His Ohio images reveal the flaws in the romantic ideal of small town America as the seat of democratic ideals.
This is a trailer for a new documentary I'm making on Ben's photographic career in this narrow window of seven years. His exposure to the effects of The Great Depression made a profound change in his art. His paintings moved away from what had been called social realism to what he later called personal realism. Instead of social causes his art later reflected the condition of the common man

Ben Shahn
1898- 1969 Ben Shahn nació en aunus, Lituania, en 1898. Emigró con su familia a Nueva York en 1906. Estudió en la Universidad de Nueva York y en la National Academy of Design
En la década de 1920 se convirtió en miembro del movimiento realismo social,
término que describe la obra de los artistas americanos durante la época de
la depresión. Se dedicaron a mostrar los problemas sociales de la sufridora clase
baja.
Principalmente en los dibujos añadía textos inspirados en las noticias de los
periódicos. En sus primeras obras se involucró mucho en los asuntos políticos
de la época, en sus trabajos posteriores retrató la soledad de las ciudades.
Despues de trabajar como litógrafo hasta 1930, realizó una serie

Ben Shahn (September 12, 1898 – March 14, 1969) was a Lithuanian-born American artist. He is best known for his works of social realism, his left-wing political views, and his series of lectures published as The Shape of Content.
Shahn was born in Kovno (Kaunas), Lithuania, then occupied by the Russian Empire, to Joshua Hessel and Gittel (Lieberman) Shahn. His father was exiled to Siberia for possible revolutionary activities in 1902, at which point Shahn, his mother, and two younger siblings moved to Vilkomir (Ukmergė). In 1906, the family immigrated to the United States where they rejoined Hessel, who had fled Siberia. They settled in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York where two more siblings were born. His younger brother drowned at age 17. Shahn began his path to becoming an artist in New York, where he was first trained as a lithographer. Shahn's early experiences with lithography and graphic design is apparent in his later prints and paintings which often include the combination of text and image. Shahn's primary medium was egg tempera, popular among social realists.

En la década de 1920 se convirtió en miembro del movimiento realismo social,
término que describe la obra de los artistas americanos durante la época de
la depresión. Se dedicaron a mostrar los problemas sociales de la sufridora clase
baja.
Principalmente en los dibujos añadía textos inspirados en las noticias de los
periódicos. En sus primeras obras se involucró mucho en los asuntos políticos
de la época, en sus trabajos posteriores retrató la soledad de las ciudades.
Despues de trabajar como litógrafo hasta 1930, realizó una serie
de 23 cuadros relacionados con el juicio Sacco-Vanzetti. (Ferdinando Nicola
Sacco y Bartolomeo Vanzetti eran dos emigrantes italianos, obreros anarquis-
tas, que fueron juzgados y condenados a morir en la silla electrica por un
presunto robo y asesinato en South Braintree, Massachusetts)
Desde 1933 hasta 1938 trabajó como fotografo para la Farm Security Adminis-
tration, haciendo una maravillosas imágenes de las zonas rurales y de

Roosevelt, New Jersey, was named after Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who was President of the United States during the Great Depression in the 1930s. The original name of the town was “Jersey Homesteads.” Its purpose was to provide a place in the country for Jewish, immigrant, garment workers in New York and Philadelphia to live and work far from the city slums. The Jewish scientist Albert Einstein, who was then living in nearby Princeton, visited the town to express his support. This is best exemplified in his most famous novel "Things Fall Apart," one of the first African novels written in English to achieve national acclaim. Left-handed guitarist Elder Ma ("AC." or "Asey") Forehand was born in Columbus, Georgia, on August 9, 1890 (according to his second wife) or 1893 (according to the Social Security Death index). He lost his sight in 1904 and his first wife, Mamie, who is said to have been born on June 8, 1895, was also blind. During the 1920 census, when the couple were residing in Birmingham, Alabama, A.C. gave his age as 29 (which would make 1890 more likely) and his occupation as "none." Mamie was registered as being twenty-three and their daughter Rideth Mae as three years and one month. All had been born in Alabama. On February 25, 1927 they recorded 'Mother's Prayer' and 'I'm So Glad Today' for Victor. A.C. played guitar and harmonica, while his wife, "Blind Mamie Forehand", accompanied him on triangle, (although discography mentions "finger cymbals"). Three days later Mamie made two recordings under her own name: 'Honey In The Rock', written by the composer F.A Graves, and 'Wouldn't Mind Dying If Dying Was All'. Her triangle was there again and A.C. accompanied her on guitar. Around 1930 the couple moved to Memphis, Tennessee. In 1936, following Mamie's death, Asa married his second wife, Frances Forest. She was a blind pianist and organist born in New Orleans on July 5, 1920. In the sixties the couple was active in the Church Of God In Christ. Asa Forehand died on May 9, 1972 and was buried without a headstone at Rose Hill Cemetery. A week later, Bob Eagle interviewed Frances for Living Blues 9. Steve LaVere acquired Asa's cheap guitar, which was in poor condition and harboured some dead roaches. ~ Guido Van Rijn

This is best exemplified in his most famous novel "Things Fall Apart," one of the first African novels written in English to achieve national acclaim. Set in the 1890s, the novel deals with the impact of British colonialism on the traditional Igbo society in Nigeria. Published in 1958 -- just two years before the end of a century of British rule in Nigeria -- the novel celebrated its 50th anniversary of publication in 2008. "An Evening with Chinua Achebe" featured the author reading from his celebrated work.
