Born Lisa Najeeb Halaby to an Arab-American family distinguished for its public service, Queen Noor married the late King Hussein Bin Talal of Jordan in 1978. Qualified with a BA in Architecture and Urban Planning from Princeton University in 1974, she had previously worked on international urban planning and design projects in Australia, Iran, the United States and Jordan, where she met her future husband who chose for her the name Noor. From the beginning, Queen Noor has played an active role in many aspects of the Kingdom's welfare. She has promoted international exchange and understanding of Arab and Muslim culture and politics, Arab-Western relations, and conflict prevention and she led the way in recovery issues such as refugees, missing persons, poverty and disarmament. She has also helped found media programs to highlight these issues. The initiatives of the Noor Al Hussein Foundation (NHF) which Her Majesty has chaired since 1979 have transformed development thinking in Jordan and the Middle East through pioneering programs in the areas of poverty eradication and sustainable development, women's empowerment, microfinance, health, environmental conservation, and arts as a medium for social development and cross-cultural exchange, many of which are internationally acclaimed models for the developing world. Queen Noor also chairs the King Hussein Foundation and the King Hussein Foundation International (KHFI), which she founded in 1999 to build on King Hussein's humanitarian vision and legacy in Jordan and abroad through national, regional and international programs that promote education and leadership, economic empowerment, tolerance, and cross cultural dialogue and media that enhance mutual understanding and respect among different cultures and across conflict lines. She was also co-founder of the Alliance of Civilizations Media Fund, a not-for-profit initiative by private media, the United Nations, and global philanthropists that in 2009 merged with Soliya, a non-profit industry leader in using new media technologies to foster cross-cultural understanding. Queen Noor is renowned for her personal commitment to peace building and humanitarian causes and has travelled extensively in her role as Commissioner of the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP). Her Majesty is a former expert advisor to the United Nations on the Ottawa Treaty and a long time board member of Refugees International where she has supported the cause of Palestinian, Afghan and Iraqi refugees displaced by conflict in the region. She has repeatedly testified before the US Congress on this issue. Queen Noor's other international campaigns have included International Campaign to Ban Landmines, for which she has travelled extensively and Global Zero, an international movement working for the elimination of nuclear weapons. Queen Noor is the recipient of numerous awards and honorary doctorates in international relations, law and humane letters. Most recently she received the 2009 Healing the Planet Award from Physicians for Social Responsibility, the 2009 Global Environmental Citizen Award from Harvard Medical School's Center for Health and the Global Environment, the 2008 Amigo de los Niños Award from Save the Children, and the Humanitarian Award from International Relief and Development. Her Majesty has published two books, Hussein of Jordan (2000) and Leap of Faith: Memoirs of an Unexpected Life (2003), a New York Times best seller published in 17 languages.
