A former MI5 spy has broken cover to give us an unprecedented account of his life in service - and describe his anger at the way he was treated.
The agent, codenamed Robert Acott, said he spied for 18 years, mostly following Islamic and Irish terrorist suspects.
He says MI5 pushed him out after he suffered symptoms of stress, later diagnosed as PTSD.
MI5 would not comment on the claims - but security sources said they felt his was only one side of the story. Nick Hopkins reports.

Design seems to be pretty much the same, the signature MIUI is also clearly visible. This new mystery device does, however, appear to be significantly larger than the 5-inch Mi4. And although scale is hard to judge properly an estimate would put the display firmly in phablet territory - around 5.5 to 5.7 inches.
The alleged Mi5 does appear to have a remarkably thin bezel, significantly thinner than its predecessor. Last month we reported on a set of spy production shots of what was supposedly the screen assembly for the same phone.
Relying solely on visual comparison, they do seem to match up, but the newly leaked photo shows a black device with a lit-up screen, making it nearly impossible to spot the logo and the sensors and speaker position. So a definite match can not be confirmed.
Diving further into the rumor mill reveals some alleged specs for the device. It is said to have 4G LTE connectivity, a QHD display with a Snapdragon 805 SoC and at least 3GB of RAM. While none of the information about the mysterious phone is confirmed and should be taken with a grain of salt we can at least rest easy, knowing that things will definitely clear up very soon, with CES right around the corner. The Security Service, commonly known as MI5 (Military Intelligence, Section 5), is the United Kingdom's internal counter-intelligence and security agency and is part of its core intelligence machinery alongside the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS or MI6) focused on foreign threats, Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) and Defence Intelligence (DI). All come under the direction of the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC). The service has a statutory basis in the Security Service Act 1989 and the Intelligence Services Act 1994. Its remit includes the protection of British parliamentary democracy and economic interests, counter-terrorism and counter-espionage within the UK. Although mainly concerned with internal security, it does have an overseas role in support of its mission. Conversely, to ensure that the Home Secretary is responsible for intelligence operations within the UK, the Service may act on behalf of SIS and GCHQ[citation needed] even if the operation is outside its own functions (SIS and GCHQ report to the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs).

Once there, with the loss of Monir in the wartime chaos, they are captured by Northern Alliance fighters. They are then handed them over the American forces who transport them to the prison camps at the Guantanamo Bay base in Cuba. What follows is three years of relentless imprisonment, interrogations and torture to make them submit to blatantly wrong confessions to being terrorists. In the midst of this abuse, the three struggle to keep their spirits up in that face of this grave injustice.

The alleged Mi5 does appear to have a remarkably thin bezel, significantly thinner than its predecessor. Last month we reported on a set of spy production shots of what was supposedly the screen assembly for the same phone.
Relying solely on visual comparison, they do seem to match up, but the newly leaked photo shows a black device with a lit-up screen, making it nearly impossible to spot the logo and the sensors and speaker position. So a definite match can not be confirmed.
Diving further into the rumor mill reveals some alleged specs for the device. It is said to have 4G LTE connectivity, a QHD display with a Snapdragon 805 SoC and at least 3GB of RAM. While none of the information about the mysterious phone is confirmed and should be taken with a grain of salt we can at least rest easy, knowing that things will definitely clear up very soon, with CES right around the corner. Xiaomi Mi5 has been leaked, this flagship smartphone features a 5.5" Quad HD display, Snapdragon 810 or 805 processor, 3GB of RAM & more at CES 2015.
We’ve already heard a handful of rumors about Xiaomi’s upcoming Mi5, and even seen a few leaked pictures of the phone. Now, a fresh photo of Android device in black may offer the best look yet at the Chinese company’s highly-anticipated flagship.
The new leaked photo seems to match up pretty well with earlier leaks. The phone features a tall and thin design with barely any bezels along the left and right sides of the screen. But the black variant makes it looks like the Mi5 features a truly edge-to-edge display that the white version can’t visually match. Of course, it’s possible this is just some clever Photoshop work, so we’ll reserve final judgement until the official announcement.
Xiaomi’s next smartphone is expected to pack a 5.5-inch or 5.7-inch display, possibly with a Quad HD resolution and even a sapphire glass panel. Under the hood. The Mi5 may offer 3GB of RAM and a Qualcomm processor (either the Snapdragon 805 or potentially even the upcoming Snapdragon 810).
Rumor has it Xiaomi could unveil the Mi5 next week during CES 2015, and we’ll be on the ground in Las Vegas in case it does.

Parliament's Intelligence and Security Committee - GCHQ's Sir Iain Lobban, MI5's Andrew Parker and MI6's Sir John Sawers talk about their secret work....and how terrorists are "rubbing their hands in glee"!
They are the men who traditionally live in the shadows, but the heads of MI5, MI6 and GCHQ were subjected to a public inquisition for the first time as MPs sought to demystify the work of Britain's intelligence agencies.
Sir John Sawers, the Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service MI6, appeared alongside Andrew Parker, Director-General of the Security Service, MI5, and Sir Iain Lobban.
The 34 foiled plots
The most striking new fact to be divulged was that the intelligence agencies and police have foiled 34 terrorist plots against the UK since the July 7 suicide bombings of 2005.
Mr Parker, however, warned that there are still "thousands" of violent extremists living in the UK who are known to MI5.
He said: "The vast majority of plots come from people who live here." He added that some plots aimed to be at least as big as 7/7, and: "Spectaculars are still in the minds of terrorists."
One or two plots discovered each year were "aimed at mass casualties", he said, the majority of which were thwarted by the actions of the intelligence and security agencies.
It's not like James Bond
Sir John Sawers, who is known by the codename of C within MI6, used the hearing to dispel the myth of his organisation employing 007-style operatives.
He said intelligence-gathering was painstaking and lengthy and: "The idea of sending an agent off into the field, like James Bond, who comes back after a couple of months, it doesn't work like that."
He added: "It's not like it was in the Cold War. There aren't states out there trying to destroy our Government and our way of life. But there are a very wide range of diverse threats that we face.
"The biggest is terrorism - the threat from al Qaeda and its many, many branches. There are also states out there that are trying to do us harm, through cyber-attacks, by acquiring nuclear weapons or involved in generating instability in parts of the world important to us."
He said his agents were never left without support, and if necessary "we will wake the Foreign Secretary up in the middle of the night" to get a decision on a difficult issue.
Mr Parker said 10 per cent of MI5's work involved old-style counter-espionage work against the threat from foreign states, with most of the Security Service's workload taken up with terrorism.
He said the terrorism threat in Northern Ireland was "diminishing year on year" and "won't last forever" because Ulster had "moved on" and over time terrorists will either be "jailed or give up".
We are not complicit in torture
Sir John denied outright that British intelligence officers had been complicit in torture of terrorism suspects overseas.
He said: "I don't accept the allegations that have been made against us...we're absolutely clear we only operate within the framework of the law.
"There are some countries we can't work with at all, Syria for example."
"There are some countries which have mixed human rights records and we seek clear assurances that when we provide intelligence it will be used lawfully and if anyone is detained or questioned as a consequence of our intelligence, it is done to our standards."
Mr Parker said: "Would we pursue a situation that we knew would lead to mistreatment or torture of an individual to get terrorist threat intelligence? The answer is absolutely not."
The 'terrorism tourists'
The civil war in Syria has been a magnet for British extremists looking for the opportunity for "jihadi" activity, Mr Parker said.
"Syria has become a very attractive place for people to go for that reason - those who support or sympathise with the al Qaeda ideological message," he said.
"We've seen low hundreds of people from this country go to Syria for periods and come back - some large numbers are still there - and get involved in fighting.
"This is partly because of the proximity of Syria and the ease of travel there, but also because it is attractive as what they would see as a jihadi cause."
Asked by Lord Ancram why the agencies had not predicted the Arab Spring, Sir John said: "We are not crystal ball gazers; we are intelligence agencies. We could all see the fault lines in Arab societies but no-one predicted when the earthquake would hit."
We are not cyber-snoopers
Sir Malcolm Rifkind suggested many people believe the "real cyber threat" in the UK comes from GCHQ seeking to collect personal data.
Sir Iain replied: "We do not spend our time listening to the telephone calls or reading the e-mails of the majority...it would not be legal. We do not do it.
"It would be very nice if terrorists or serious criminals used a particular method of communication and everybody else used something else. That is not the case."

Juan Pujol Garcia was a Spanish double agent during WWII, acting as a spy for both the Axis and the Allies.
In 1940, during the early stages of WWII, Pujol decided that he wanted to make a contribution “for the good of humanity.” Pujol offered his services to the British three different times, but was turned down repeatedly. He decided to become a German agent instead before reapproaching the British to offer his services as a double agent.
Pujol created a fake identity as a Spanish government official with Nazi sympathies with the ability to travel to London on government business. He created a fake diplomatic passport by fooling a printer he worked for the embassy in Lisbon, Portugal. German Intelligence accepted his offer to work for them as an agent and they trained him in secret writing, providing him a bottle of invisible ink, a codebook, and 600 pounds for expenses. He was to move to London and establish a network of British agents there.
Pujol moved to Lisbon instead of London and using a tourist’s guide to England, books from the Lisbon public library, and newsreels he saw at cinemas, he wrote reports back to the Nazis that seemed to be coming from London. He even submitted traveling expenses based on fares listed in a British railway guide. Pujol created a whole network of fictitious agents that he claimed to have recruited across Britain. His reports were so credible that when the British intercepted some of them they launched a counter-intelligence spy hunt for him through MI5.
In 1942, after the United States entered the war, Pujol contacted an American naval officer in Lisbon who recognized Pujol’s potential. The Americans contacted their British counterparts in support of Pujol. Pujol was relocated to Britain in April 1942 and was later provided the code name of Garbo. Pujol and a Spanish speaking MI5 agent, Tomas Harris, maintained Pujol’s fictitious spy network that he had created, writing over 300 letters to the Germans. Nazi intelligence made little effort to recruit additional spies in the United Kingdom during the war because of this. The information they delivered included real information of little military value, valuable information intentionally delayed, and bits of complete fiction. Pujol later began communicating with the Germans via radio. His codename within the German intelligence service became Arabel and the sophisticated encryptions they provided him were in turn supplied to British codebreakers.
In early 1944, the Germans informed Pujol that they believed a large scale invasion of Europe was approaching and wanted him to discover information about its planning. He became an integral part of Operation Fortitude, a code name for the Allies’ military deception strategy in the build up to the Normandy landings. Pujol sent over 500 radio messages between January 1944 and D-Day in June to mislead the Germans about where the landing would be occurring. Pujol’s transmissions were carefully delayed on D-Day, so that the real information he sent arrived too late.
Three days after D-Day, Pujol sent a message to the Nazi high command that reached Adolf Hitler. He provided the Allied order of battle, showing exaggerated numbers of soldiers still in England ready for an additional invasion. The deception was supported by inflatable tanks and bogus radio chatter. The deception paid off and the German high command trusted Pujol’s reports. After the war, it was discovered that no less than 62 of Pujol’s reports were included in German military high command intelligence summaries. The Germans had paid their agent, Arabel, $340,000 U.S. dollars to support his spy network. Adjusted for inflation, this comes out to over $4.5 million in 2015. At the height of his reports, Pujol’s fictitious spy network totaled 27 individuals.
In July 1944, the Germans awarded Pujol, as Arabel, the Iron Cross for his services to the Nazi war effort. This award was one of great honor and required Hitler’s personal authorization. He was presented the award via radio and later received the physical medal after the war had ended. As Garbo, Pujol received a Member of the Order of the British Empire from King George VI in November 1944 for his service as a double agent. The Nazis never realized during the war what Pujol was really doing. Pujol, or Garbo, was one of the very few people to have received decorations from both the Axis and Allied powers during WWII.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this "calling" in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, "glide" over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and "see" the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

The masked Islamic State militant known as "Jihadi John", who has been pictured in the videos of the beheadings of Western hostages, has been named.He is Mohammed Emwazi, a Kuwaiti-born British man in his mid-20s from west London, who was previously known to British security services.British police declined to comment, citing ongoing investigations.Emwazi first appeared in a video last August, when he apparently killed the US journalist James FoleyHe was later thought to have been pictured in the videos of the beheadings of US journalist Steven Sotloff, British aid worker David Haines, British taxi driver Alan Henning, and American aid worker Abdul-Rahman Kassig, also known as Peter.'The Beatles'In each of the videos, the militant appeared dressed in a black robe with a black balaclava covering all but his eyes and top of his nose.Speaking with a British accent, he taunted Western powers before holding his knife to the hostages' necks, appearing to start cutting before the film stopped. The victims' decapitated bodies were then shown.Earlier this month, the militant featured in a video in which the Japanese journalist Kenji Goto appeared to be beheaded. Hostages released by IS said he was one of three British jihadists guarding Westerners abducted by the group in Syria. They were known collectively as "the Beatles"In a news conference, Asim Qureshi, the research director of the London-based lobby group Cage, which had been in contact with Emwazi over a number of years, explained how he had been approached by the Washington Post for the story and detailed the difficulties Emwazi had had with security services in the UK and overseas.Mr Qureshi said Emwazi, who is understood to be about 27, had been "extremely kind, gentle and soft-spoken, the most humble young person I knew".He said he could "not be 100% certain" Jihadi John was Emwazi although there were "striking similarities".Emwazi's difficulties began when he travelled to Tanzania in May 2009 following his graduation in computer programming at the University of Westminster, Mr Qureshi added.
He and two friends had planned to go on a safari but once they landed in Dar es Salaam they were detained by police and held overnight.Emwazi then ended up flying to Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, where he claimed to be met by British intelligence agents from MI5 who accused him of trying to travel to Somalia, where the jihadist group al-Shabab operates. He denied the accusation and said the agents had tried to recruit him before allowing him to return to the UK.US and British counter-terrorism officials discovered the identity of "Jihadi John" as far back as last September. The FBI, Britain's MI5 and other intelligence agencies used a combination of voice recognition software, interviews with former hostages and on-the-ground research in London to build up a profile of the man now revealed to be Mohammed Emwazi.
They have always declined to reveal the name for "operational reasons". Now that it's out in the public domain, it's emerged that Emwazi was well-known to MI5 and that it even tried to recruit him as an informer, years before he went off to Syria to eventually join Islamic State.The practice by intelligence agencies of approaching jihadist sympathisers to work for them is likely to continue. It's believed both Britain and the US have informers inside the Islamic State "capital" of Raqqa. Yet this seems to have been little help in stopping the actions of Mohammed Emwazi, or bringing him to justice.Emwazi later moved to Kuwait, where he got a job at a computer company. But on a visit to London in 2010, he was detained by British counter-terrorism officials and prevented from flying back to Kuwait, his friends said."I had a job waiting for me and marriage to get started," Emwazi wrote in a June 2010 email to Cage.I feel like a prisoner, only not in a cage, in London," he added, "a person imprisoned and controlled by security service men, stopping me from living my new life in my birthplace and country, Kuwait."Mr Qureshi said Emwazi had made persistent efforts to try to change his situation: "We had two-and-a-half years of communications talking about what he could do to alleviate his problems."He said he did not know what had happened to Emwazi, adding: "When we treat people as if they are outsiders they will inevitably feel like outsiders - our entire national security strategy for the last 13 years has only increased alienation. The masked Islamic State militant known as "Jihadi John", who has been pictured in the videos of the beheadings of Western hostages, has been named.He is Mohammed Emwazi, a Kuwaiti-born British man in his mid-20s from west London, who was previously known to British security services.British police declined to comment, citing ongoing investigations.Emwazi first appeared in a video last August, when he apparently killed the US journalist James FoleyHe was later thought to have been pictured in the videos of the beheadings of US journalist Steven Sotloff, British aid worker David Haines, British taxi driver Alan Henning, and American aid worker Abdul-Rahman Kassig, also known as Peter.'The Beatles'In each of the videos, the militant appeared dressed in a black robe with a black balaclava covering all but his eyes and top of his nose.Speaking with a British accent, he taunted Western powers before holding his knife to the hostages' necks, appearing to start cutting before the film stopped. The victims' decapitated bodies were then shown.Earlier this month, the militant featured in a video in which the Japanese journalist Kenji Goto appeared to be beheaded. Hostages released by IS said he was one of three British jihadists guarding Westerners abducted by the group in Syria. They were known collectively as "the Beatles"In a news conference, Asim Qureshi, the research director of the London-based lobby group Cage, which had been in contact with Emwazi over a number of years, explained how he had been approached by the Washington Post for the story and detailed the difficulties Emwazi had had with security services in the UK and overseas.Mr Qureshi said Emwazi, who is understood to be about 27, had been "extremely kind, gentle and soft-spoken, the most humble young person I knew".He said he could "not be 100% certain" Jihadi John was Emwazi although there were "striking similarities".Emwazi's difficulties began when he travelled to Tanzania in May 2009 following his graduation in computer programming at the University of Westminster, Mr Qureshi added.
He and two friends had planned to go on a safari but once they landed in Dar es Salaam they were detained by police and held overnight.Emwazi then ended up flying to Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, where he claimed to be met by British intelligence agents from MI5 who accused him of trying to travel to Somalia, where the jihadist group al-Shabab operates. He denied the accusation and said the agents had tried to recruit him before allowing him to return to the UK.US and British counter-terrorism officials discovered the identity of "Jihadi John" as far back as last September. The FBI, Britain's MI5 and other intelligence agencies used a combination of voice recognition software, interviews with former hostages and on-the-ground research in London to build up a profile of the man now revealed to be Mohammed Emwazi.
They have always declined to reveal the name for "operational reasons". Now that it's out in the public domain, it's emerged that Emwazi was well-known to MI5 and that it even tried to recruit him as an informer, years before he went off to Syria to eventually join Islamic State.The practice by intelligence agencies of approaching jihadist sympathisers to work for them is likely to continue. It's believed both Britain and the US have informers inside the Islamic State "capital" of Raqqa. Yet this seems to have been little help in stopping the actions of Mohammed Emwazi, or bringing him to justice.Emwazi later moved to Kuwait, where he got a job at a computer company. But on a visit to London in 2010, he was detained by British counter-terrorism officials and prevented from flying back to Kuwait, his friends said."I had a job waiting for me and marriage to get started," Emwazi wrote in a June 2010 email to Cage.I feel like a prisoner, only not in a cage, in London," he added, "a person imprisoned and controlled by security service men, stopping me from living my new life in my birthplace and country, Kuwait."Mr Qureshi said Emwazi had made persistent efforts to try to change his situation: "We had two-and-a-half years of communications talking about what he could do to alleviate his problems."He said he did not know what had happened to Emwazi, adding: "When we treat people as if they are outsiders they will inevitably feel like outsiders - our entire national security strategy for the last 13 years has only increased alienation.
