1920s Hot Hot Hot Dance
The 1920s was the source of many of today's popular dance styles, such as the Foxtrot, Quickstep and Charleston. Here is some polite white dance and some very hot black and white dance. Most of the early jazz records are marked Foxtrot. In fact the fast foxtrot became the Quickstep, and the slower version retained the name Foxtrot. The Charleston was a major development, along with the Blackbotto

Part three of a 15-part series of documentaries produced by the American Broadcasting Company on the 20th century and the rise of the United States as a superpower.
The 1920s ushered in an era of great social change, general prosperity, Prohibition and what historians refer to as "modernity." This episode examines these great cultural changes and their affects on the nation. The 1920s, in stark contrast to the Victorian era, "roared," as bathtub gin flowed and more and more Americans moved to urban areas. But the decade also saw limited prosperity for many, especially farmers, and the unrest and discord between the values of small town America and the rapid pace of science and technology. The optimism of the decade would end in the most severe economic depression in American history. Episode 3 presents some of the major events that shaped the decade including The Scopes Monkey Trial, Prohibition, the rise of leisure pastimes, and the impact of inventions such as the automobile, radio, movies and electricity.

In which John Green teaches you about the United States in the 1920s. They were known as the roaring 20s, but not because there were lions running around everywhere. In the 1920s, America's economy was booming, and all kinds of social changes were in progress. Hollywood, flappers, jazz, there was all kinds of stuff going on in the 20s. But as usual with Crash Course, things were about to take a turn for the worse. John will teach you about the Charleston, the many Republican presidents of the 1920s, laissez-faire capitalism, jazz, consumer credit, the resurgent Klan, and all kinds of other stuff.

5 Rare films with some cool dance moves from the 1920s - the Black Bottom, Waltz, Salsa, Charleston and Foxtrot - popular dance styles in the Jazz Age. The roaring twenties! The age of the flapper!
The Black Bottom - became popular in the 1920s, which could be danced solo or as a couple, or, as in this case, in a group.
Waltz - The waltz actually goes back to around 1770, but enjoyed a renewed period of popularity in the 1920's.
Salsa - The salsa originated in New York but has clear influences from Latin America, incorporating dance styles from Cuba, Colombia and Puerto Rico.
The Charleston is named after Charleston, South Carolina. The rhythm craze was started by a broadway show tune called The Charleston.
The Foxtrot - you'll note the smoothness of this dance. Usually danced to big band music. It is similar to the waltz, except in a 4
4 time signature. Originated in the 1910s, but was most popular in the 1930s.

This is a complete episode of the program, "The Twentieth Century," and is entitled "New York in the Twenties," hosted and narrated by Walter Cronkite. It's filled with abundant film footage of the era, including shots of lots of famous names. There are three interviewees: Alfred A. Knopf, publisher; Marc Connelly, playwright; and Stanley Walker, longtime editor of the Herald Tribune. Seen in archival footage: Sinclair Lewis, Willa Cather, H.L. Mencken, Heywood Hale Broun, George Jean Nathan and many others. We get sound footage of Fannie Brice singing, "I've Got a Feeling I'm Falling" and Helen Morgan singing "My Bill." George Gershwin is seen and heard rehearsing a musical number, "Strike Up the Band," with comic team Clark and McCullough. And legendary club owner Texas Guinan ("Hello, suckers!") is seen and heard entertaining the crowd. No mention of the Harlem Renaissance, though. This documentary was made 52 years ago and it covers events that happened between 20 and 30 years before then.

The Charleston was a major development, along with the Blackbottom.
Jazz dance is a classification shared by a broad range of dance styles. Before the 1950s, jazz dance referred to dance styles that originated from African American vernacular dance. In the 1950s, a new genre of jazz dance — modern jazz dance — emerged, with roots in Caribbean traditional dance. Every individual style of jazz dance has roots traceable to one of these two distinct origins. Jazz was a big hit in the early 50's and it is still a well loved style of dance all over the world. Moves Used In Jazz Dance include Jazz Hands, Kicks, Leaps, Sideways Shuffling, Rolled Shoulders, and Turned Knees.
