The Liberty ship was a class of cargo ship built in the United States during World War II. Though British in conception, the design was adapted by the U.S. for its simple, low-cost construction. Mass produced on an unprecedented scale, the now iconic Liberty ship came to symbolize U.S. wartime industrial output.
The class was developed to meet British orders for transports to replace those torpedoed by German U-boats. The vessels were purchased both for the U.S. fleet and lend-lease deliveries of war materiel to Britain and the Soviet Union. Eighteen American shipyards built 2,710 Liberty ships between 1941 and 1945, easily the largest number of ships produced to a single design.

Liberty Ship are a four piece rock & roll band from the suburbs of Sheffield.
They toured the UK supporting King Charles in April 2013.
And they toured the UK again supporting Reverend & The Makers in March 2014.
They were also selected from over 1500 applicants to open the Main Stage at Tramlines 2015.

SHIPWAYS is a 1945 film presented by the Bethlehem Steel Company – Shipbuilding Division. The film opens with vintage footage of massive modern ships being built in the yards of Bethlehem Steel Company. (00:00:55:00) Then, we see the christening ceremony (00:01:50:00) of the USS Topeka. A nice shot of ships at Bethlehem yards is seen at (00:04:50:00. Various ship models from the distant past are seen at (00:05:22:00). A nice animated montage of Bethlehem ships launched from Quincy Yards is seen at (00:06:32:00). Famous ships from Sparrows Point Yard during World War I can be seen at (00:6:53:00). An amazing shot of five ships being launched due to extreme need, can be seen at (00:28:40:00). A commissioning ceremony for the British Navy can be seen at (00:29:13:00). Soon, Bethlehem began building landing craft to give our troops an edge in battle. (00:30:25:00) The launch of the second USS Lexington can be seen at (00:32:15:00). A carrier of epic proportions, the USS Wasp, can be seen being launched at (00:33:15:00). The USS John Hancock can be seen being christened at (00:34:50:00). The Battleship IOWA (BB-61) was to depart for San Pedro on Sunday, May 20th, but was delayed due to heavy seas of southern California. Instead of escorting the IOWA under the Golden Gate, the Liberty Ship Jeremiah O'Brien cruised over to Richmond and offered her a Champagne Toast. Views of an annular eclipse capped a fantastic day on the bay!

The engine is a vertical reciprocating triple expansion steam engine of 2,500 IHP with cylinder diameters of 241⁄2" — 37" — 70" and a stroke of 48", driving a single screw at 76 rpm for an average cruising speed of 11 knots. Steam enters the high pressure cylinder (24 1/2" bore) at 200PSI, is exhausted and enters the medium pressure cylinder (37" bore) at 75PSI, is exhausted and enters the low pressure cylinder (70" bore) at 12PSI, and then is exhausted. Other smaller steam engines and turbines powered pumps, fans, dynamos, etc. Steam is produced by two oil-fired boilers, each with 4,852 square feet of heating surface, and furnished 220PSI t 440°F to the throttle, exhausting into 26 inches of vacuum. It was wonderful to watch! Many thanks to all the ships crew, particularly those of the Engine Room on my part!

We spent our last spring vacation in San Francisco. I'd forgotten the Jeremiah O'Brien was docked there -- it's one of two surviving Liberty Ships, out of more than 4,000 that were cranked out of U.S. shipyards during World War II. Turned out we'd totally hit the jackpot. It was an engine-room day. The ship's 2500-horsepower triple-expansion steam power plant was ticking over about 30 rpm the whole time we were exploring the ship.
These things are 441 feet long and 56 feet wide. It's hard to believe they were busting a fresh bottle of champagne over a new one of these EVERY THREE DAYS at the Portland, Ore., shipyard alone. Awesome.

Liberty Incident - America was Attacked by Israel History Channel Documentary
The USS Liberty incident was an attack on a United States Navy technical research ship, USS Liberty, by Israeli Air Force jet fighter aircraft and Israeli Navy motor torpedo boats, on 8 June 1967, during the Six-Day War.[3] The combined air and sea attack killed 34 crew members (naval officers, seamen, two Marines, and one civilian), wounded 171 crew members, and severely damaged the ship.[4] At the time, the ship was in international waters north of the Sinai Peninsula, about 25.5 nmi (29.3 mi; 47.2 km) northwest from the Egyptian city of Arish.[1][5]
Israel apologized for the attack, saying that the USS Liberty had been attacked in error after being mistaken for an Egyptian ship.[6] Both the Israeli and U.S. governments conducted inquiries and issued reports that concluded the attack was a mistake due to Israeli confusion about the ship's identity,[2] though others, including survivors of the attack, have rejected these conclusions and maintain that the attack was deliberate.[7]
In May 1968, the Israeli government paid US$3,323,500 (US$22.5 million 2015) in compensation to the families of the 34 men killed in the attack. In March 1969, Israel paid a further $3,566,457 to the men who had been wounded. On 18 December 1980, it agreed to pay $6 million as settlement for the final U.S. bill of $17,132,709 for material damage to Liberty herself plus 13 years' interest.[8]

Liberty ships were cargo ships built in the United States during World War II. Though British in conception, they were adapted by the U.S. as they were cheap and quick to build, and came to symbolize U.S. wartime industrial output. Based on vessels ordered by Britain to replace ships torpedoed by German U-boats, they were purchased for the U.S. fleet and for lend-lease provision to Britain. Eighteen American shipyards built 2,751 Libertys between 1941 and 1945, easily the largest number of ships produced to a single design.
The production of these vessels mirrored, on a much larger scale, the manufacture of the Hog Islander ship and similar standardized types during World War I. The immense effort to build Liberty ships, the sheer number of ships built, and the fact that some of the ships survived far longer than the original design life of five years, make them the subject of much study.
In 1936, the American Merchant Marine Act was passed to subsidize the annual construction of 50 commercial merchant vessels to be used in wartime by the United States Navy as naval auxiliaries. The number was doubled in 1939 and again in 1940 to 200 ships a year. Ship types included a tanker and three types of merchant vessel, all to be powered by steam turbines. Limited industrial capacity, especially for reduction gears, meant that relatively few of these ships were built.

Steam enters the high pressure cylinder (24 1/2" bore) at 200PSI, is exhausted and enters the medium pressure cylinder (37" bore) at 75PSI, is exhausted and enters the low pressure cylinder (70" bore) at 12PSI, and then is exhausted. Other smaller steam engines and turbines powered pumps, fans, dynamos, etc. Steam is produced by two oil-fired boilers, each with 4,852 square feet of heating surface, and furnished 220PSI t 440°F to the throttle, exhausting into 26 inches of vacuum. We spent our last spring vacation in San Francisco. I'd forgotten the Jeremiah O'Brien was docked there -- it's one of two surviving Liberty Ships, out of more than 4,000 that were cranked out of U.S. shipyards during World War II. Turned out we'd totally hit the jackpot. It was an engine-room day. The ship's 2500-horsepower triple-expansion steam power plant was ticking over about 30 rpm the whole time we were exploring the ship. These things are 441 feet long and 56 feet wide. It's hard to believe they were busting a fresh bottle of champagne over a new one of these EVERY THREE DAYS at the Portland, Ore., shipyard alone. Awesome. -

Liberty Incident - America was Attacked by Israel History Channel Documentary The USS Liberty incident was an attack on a United States Navy technical research ship, USS Liberty, by Israeli Air Force jet fighter aircraft and Israeli Navy motor torpedo boats, on 8 June 1967, during the Six-Day War.[3] The combined air and sea attack killed 34 crew members (naval officers, seamen, two Marines, and one civilian), wounded 171 crew members, and severely damaged the ship.[4] At the time, the ship was in international waters north of the Sinai Peninsula, about 25.5 nmi (29.3 mi; 47.2 km) northwest from the Egyptian city of Arish.[1][5] Israel apologized for the attack, saying that the USS Liberty had been attacked in error after being mistaken for an Egyptian ship.[6] Both the Israeli and U.S. governments conducted inquiries and issued reports that concluded the attack was a mistake due to Israeli confusion about the ship's identity,[2] though others, including survivors of the attack, have rejected these conclusions and maintain that the attack was deliberate.[7] In May 1968, the Israeli government paid US$3,323,500 (US$22.5 million 2015) in compensation to the families of the 34 men killed in the attack. In March 1969, Israel paid a further $3,566,457 to the men who had been wounded. On 18 December 1980, it agreed to pay $6 million as settlement for the final U.S. bill of $17,132,709 for material damage to Liberty herself plus 13 years' interest.[8] -

Liberty Ships
The Liberty ship was a class of cargo ship built in the United States during World War II. Though British in conception, the design was adapted by the U.S. for its simple, low-cost construction. Mass produced on an unprecedented scale, the now iconic Liberty ship came to symbolize U.S. wartime industrial output. The class was developed to meet British orders for transports to replace those torpedoed by German U-boats. The vessels were purchased both for the U.S. fleet and lend-lease deliveries of war materiel to Britain and the Soviet Union. Eighteen American shipyards built 2,710 Liberty ships between 1941 and 1945, easily the largest number of ships produced to a single design. -

The Battleship IOWA (BB-61) was to depart for San Pedro on Sunday, May 20th, but was delayed due to heavy seas of southern California. Instead of escorting the IOWA under the Golden Gate, the Liberty Ship Jeremiah O'Brien cruised over to Richmond and offered her a Champagne Toast. Views of an annular eclipse capped a fantastic day on the bay!

The engine is a vertical reciprocating triple expansion steam engine of 2,500 IHP with cylinder diameters of 241⁄2" — 37" — 70" and a stroke of 48", driving a single screw at 76 rpm for an average cruising speed of 11 knots. Steam enters the high pressure cylinder (24 1/2" bore) at 200PSI, is exhausted and enters the medium pressure cylinder (37" bore) at 75PSI, is exhausted and enters the low pressure cylinder (70" bore) at 12PSI, and then is exhausted. Other smaller steam engines and turbines powered pumps, fans, dynamos, etc. Steam is produced by two oil-fired boilers, each with 4,852 square feet of heating surface, and furnished 220PSI t 440°F to the throttle, exhausting into 26 inches of vacuum. It was wonderful to watch! Many thanks to all the ships crew, particularly those of the Engine Room on my part!

We spent our last spring vacation in San Francisco. I'd forgotten the Jeremiah O'Brien was docked there -- it's one of two surviving Liberty Ships, out of more than 4,000 that were cranked out of U.S. shipyards during World War II. Turned out we'd totally hit the jackpot. It was an engine-room day. The ship's 2500-horsepower triple-expansion steam power plant was ticking over about 30 rpm the whole time we were exploring the ship.
These things are 441 feet long and 56 feet wide. It's hard to believe they were busting a fresh bottle of champagne over a new one of these EVERY THREE DAYS at the Portland, Ore., shipyard alone. Awesome.

The USS Liberty incident was an attack on a United States Navy technical research ship, USS Liberty, by Israeli Air Force jet fighter aircraft and Israeli Navy motor torpedo boats, on 8 June 1967, during the Six-Day War.[3] The combined air and sea attack killed 34 crew members (naval officers, seamen, two Marines, and one civilian), wounded 171 crew members, and severely damaged the ship.[4] At the time, the ship was in international waters north of the Sinai Peninsula, about 25.5 nmi (29.3 mi; 47.2 km) northwest from the Egyptian city of Arish.[1][5]
Israel apologized for the attack, saying that the USS Liberty had been attacked in error after being mistaken for an Egyptian ship.[6] Both the Israeli and U.S. governments conducted inquiries and issued reports that concluded the attack was a mistake due to Israeli confusion about the ship's identity,[2] though others, including survivors of the attack, have rejected these conclusions and maintain that the attack was deliberate.[7]
In May 1968, the Israeli government paid US$3,323,500 (US$22.5 million 2015) in compensation to the families of the 34 men killed in the attack. In March 1969, Israel paid a further $3,566,457 to the men who had been wounded. On 18 December 1980, it agreed to pay $6 million as settlement for the final U.S. bill of $17,132,709 for material damage to Liberty herself plus 13 years' interest.[8]

Built in just 56 days at the New England Shipbuilding Corporation in South Portland, Maine, and launched on 19 June 1943, this class EC2-S-CI ship not only made four perilous round trip wartime crossings of the Atlantic and served on D-Day, the vessel later saw sixteen months of service in both the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean calling at ports in Chile, Peru, New Guinea, the Philippines, India, China, and Australia.
The end of the war caused most of the Liberty ships to be removed from service in 1946 and many were subsequently sold to foreign and domestic buyers. Others were retained by the U.S. Maritime Commission for potential reactivation in the event of future military conflicts. The O'Brien was mothballed and remained in the National Defense Reserve Fleet in Suisun Bay for 33 years. In the 1970s, however, the idea of preserving an unaltered Liberty Ship began to be developed and, under the sponsorship of Rear Admiral Thomas J. Patterson, USMS, (then the Western Regional Director of the U.S. Maritime Administration) the ship was put aside for preservation instead of being sold for scrap. In a 1994 interview printed by the Vintage Preservation magazine "Old Glory," Patterson is alleged to have claimed the ship was steamed to her anchorage in the mothball fleet (unlike the many that were secured as unservicable and towed into storage), and frequently placed at the back of the list for disposal, which undoubtedly contributed to her survival.
Possession of the O'Brien was taken in 1979 by the National Liberty Ship Memorial, an all volunteer group, to be restored; at which point she was virtually the last Liberty at the anchorage. Amazingly, those who volunteered to resurrect the mothballed ship were able to get the antiquated steam plant operating while the vessel remained in Suisun Bay, and after more than three decades of sitting in rusting idleness, the O'Brien's boilers were lit; and on 21 May 1980, the ship left the mothball fleet—the only similar vessel ever to do so under her own power[citation needed] -- for San Francisco Bay, drydocking, and thousands of more hours of restoration work. The ship then moved to Fort Mason, on the San Francisco waterfront just to the west of Fisherman's wharf. There the O'Brien became a floating museum dedicated to the men and women who built and sailed the ships of United States Merchant Marine in WWII. Licenced to carry tours around San Francisco bay, it was suggested that the ship be restored to ocean going specification, and after efforts in securing sponsorship this was accomplished in time for the 50th "D-Day" Anniversary Celebrations in 1994. The ship makes several passenger-carrying daylight cruises each year in the San Francisco Bay Area, and occasional voyages to more distant ports such as Seattle and San Diego.

This video is a short slideshow of Liberty Ship SS John W. Brown at the Baltimore Cruise Terminal on May 11, 2013. The Brown is a WWII troop and cargo ship built in Baltimore and launched September 7, 1942.
The John W. Brown is a living history museum and sails in the Chesapeake Bay several times a year. Passengers spent a fantastic half day touring the ship at the dock enjoying entertainment by The Manhattan Dolls and The Ultimate Abbott and Costello Tribute Show.
Liberty Ships were crucial in achieving victory in WWII. There are only two active Liberty Ships remaining of approximately 2,700 built. These are maintained as living history museums.
Enjoy the video as you see various photos of a WWII troop/cargo ship powered by a steam engine. The steam engine was obsolete in WWII when these ships were built but lower in cost, reliable, and the technology was available for a massive ship building program that had to be completed in a hurry. Prior to the Liberty Ship program, ships were being sunk at an alarming rate and replacements could not keep up with losses. Built quickly and in massive numbers, the Liberty Ship program came to the rescue in WWII turning the tide on shipping losses playing a major role in achieving victory, thus, "Ships for Victory".
