John Ogdon playing Chopin's Piano Sonata no. 3, op. 58, and Scherzo no. 3, op. 39, live in Leningrad on 29 November 1963. I've done what I could with a poor recording -- increased the volume, and removed as many clicks and pops as I could find. I tried to reduce the hiss but each attempt distorted the music, so I've left it as it is. The sound quality seems to worsen in the sonata's finale. However overall I think the performance is excellent, particularly the Largo which is intense and beautiful. The photo shows Ogdon at the Tchaikovsky House-Museum in Klin in 1962. Timing below:

As the nineteenth century melted into the twentieth, Rachmaninov hit his stride as a composer with overtly derivative works from the 1890s yielding to the distilled and highly personal utterance of the Preludes, Op. 23, hand-in-hand with large ambitions and works laid out on an expansive scale, for instance, the sprawling Symphony No. 2 in E minor, completed in tandem with the Piano Sonata No. 1.
Against a background of family illnesses, grueling performance engagements, and the 1905 uprising in Russia, Rachmaninov resigned his position as conductor at the Bolshoi in February 1906 and immediately left with his family for Italy, moving on to Dresden in the fall. There, he completed the orchestration of his Symphony No. 2 and entertained ultimately abortive plans for operas based upon Flaubert's Salammbô (already attempted by Mussorgsky) and Maeterlinck's Monna Vanna. With the latter, he had composed the first act in vocal score when it became apparent that copyright restrictions would bar its European production. Something of this jaded late Romantic tumult informs the Piano Sonata No. 1, completed 14 May 1907.
Geoffrey Norris, in his survey of Rachmaninov's music, noted "...although the original idea for it to be a programme sonata based on Faust was abandoned, it is tempting to link the three movements with Faust, Gretchen, and Mephistopheles." This had already been done in Liszt's Eine Faust Symphonie, while the critical consensus is that Liszt's single-movement Piano Sonata embodies a Faustian drama. Rachmaninov was attracted to the figure of the disconsolate magus, whether from Goethe's Faust or Lord Byron's spin-off Manfred -- as a 13-year-old he transcribed Tchaikovsky's Manfred Symphony for piano duet and in 1890 sketched two movements of a Manfred Symphony of his own.
- The nervously ruminative gestures of the sonata's first movement, organized around a recurrent falling major fifth, accord well with the transformative aspirations of the sorcerer/philosopher.
- But the sultry second movement suggests less demure innocence than a siren or the vastness and mystery of a star-clad Russian night, laced with nostalgia, while nothing in the third movement is overtly Mephistophelean.
- A mood of impassioned questioning arises as material from the preceding movements returns in cyclical fashion to be tortured over a long stretch to a near climax, only to yield to further reminiscences before finally escalating to a towering apotheosis.
Though lyrically alive, this sonata requires an adept, highly concentrated pianist to keep its elaboration from diffuseness, and this performance by Ogdon is one of the very few that manages to do that.

John Andrew Howard Ogdon (27 January 1937 – 1 August 1989) was an English pianist and composer.
Ogdon was born in Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire, and attended Manchester Grammar School, before studying at the Royal Northern College of Music between 1953 and 1957, where his fellow students under Richard Hall included Harrison Birtwistle, Alexander Goehr, Elgar Howarth and Peter Maxwell Davies. Together they formed New Music Manchester, a group dedicated to the performances of serial and other modern works. His tutor there was Claud Biggs. As a boy he had studied with Iso Elinson and after leaving college, he further studied with Gordon Green, Denis Matthews, Dame Myra Hess, and Egon Petri — the latter in Basel, Switzerland.
He won first prize at the London Liszt Competition in 1961 and consolidated his growing international reputation by winning another first prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1962, jointly with Vladimir Ashkenazy.
John Ogdon was able to play most pieces at sight and had committed a huge range of pieces to memory. He enjoyed fully using his vast talents, for example wanting to record the complete works for piano of Rachmaninoff (which constitute about 6-full length CDs). He did not record all these works, but those he did record - about half - were released in 2001. He recorded all ten Scriabin sonatas early in his career. Ogdon was also a formidable exponent of the works of Alkan and Busoni. In more familiar repertoire, he revealed deep musical sensibilities, always buttressed by a colossal technique. He also recorded a number of duo-piano works with his wife, Brenda Lucas (aka Brenda Lucas Ogdon).

I've done what I could with a poor recording -- increased the volume, and removed as many clicks and pops as I could find. I tried to reduce the hiss but each attempt distorted the music, so I've left it as it is. The sound quality seems to worsen in the sonata's finale. However overall I think the performance is excellent, particularly the Largo which is intense and beautiful. The photo shows Ogdon at the Tchaikovsky House-Museum in Klin in 1962. John Ogdon playing Chopin's Piano Sonata no. 3, op. 58, and Scherzo no. 3, op. 39, live in Leningrad on 29 November 1963. I've done what I could with a poor recording -- increased the volume, and removed as many clicks and pops as I could find. I tried to reduce the hiss but each attempt distorted the music, so I've left it as it is. The sound quality seems to worsen in the sonata's finale. However overall I think the performance is excellent, particularly the Largo which is intense and beautiful. The photo shows Ogdon at the Tchaikovsky House-Museum in Klin in 1962. Timing below:

As the nineteenth century melted into the twentieth, Rachmaninov hit his stride as a composer with overtly derivative works from the 1890s yielding to the distilled and highly personal utterance of the Preludes, Op. 23, hand-in-hand with large ambitions and works laid out on an expansive scale, for instance, the sprawling Symphony No. 2 in E minor, completed in tandem with the Piano Sonata No. 1.
Against a background of family illnesses, grueling performance engagements, and the 1905 uprising in Russia, Rachmaninov resigned his position as conductor at the Bolshoi in February 1906 and immediately left with his family for Italy, moving on to Dresden in the fall. There, he completed the orchestration of his Symphony No. 2 and entertained ultimately abortive plans for operas based upon Flaubert's Salammbô (already attempted by Mussorgsky) and Maeterlinck's Monna Vanna. With the latter, he had composed the first act in vocal score when it became apparent that copyright restrictions would bar its European production. Something of this jaded late Romantic tumult informs the Piano Sonata No. 1, completed 14 May 1907.
Geoffrey Norris, in his survey of Rachmaninov's music, noted "...although the original idea for it to be a programme sonata based on Faust was abandoned, it is tempting to link the three movements with Faust, Gretchen, and Mephistopheles." This had already been done in Liszt's Eine Faust Symphonie, while the critical consensus is that Liszt's single-movement Piano Sonata embodies a Faustian drama. Rachmaninov was attracted to the figure of the disconsolate magus, whether from Goethe's Faust or Lord Byron's spin-off Manfred -- as a 13-year-old he transcribed Tchaikovsky's Manfred Symphony for piano duet and in 1890 sketched two movements of a Manfred Symphony of his own.
- The nervously ruminative gestures of the sonata's first movement, organized around a recurrent falling major fifth, accord well with the transformative aspirations of the sorcerer/philosopher.
- But the sultry second movement suggests less demure innocence than a siren or the vastness and mystery of a star-clad Russian night, laced with nostalgia, while nothing in the third movement is overtly Mephistophelean.
- A mood of impassioned questioning arises as material from the preceding movements returns in cyclical fashion to be tortured over a long stretch to a near climax, only to yield to further reminiscences before finally escalating to a towering apotheosis.
Though lyrically alive, this sonata requires an adept, highly concentrated pianist to keep its elaboration from diffuseness, and this performance by Ogdon is one of the very few that manages to do that.

There was a cross section of people older, younger, male and female, a number were alternative practitioners.
We found that on a consistent basis as each month passed the participants blood circulation improved, this was measured in the capillaries. In some cases we found dramatic improvements and in one case I found that a patient with high blood pressure regularized and his cardiac irregularities normalized.
Heart rate variability was also measured and we found that it confirmed our positive results.
