Knox Martin Women Black and White at WOODWARD GALLERY
When James Kalm moved from Idaho to New York in the late seventies, it was to study with Knox Martin at the Art Students League. In the thirty-something years since then, Martin has continued his industrious production of paintings. Never one to bow to fashion, this body of work is the culmination of over twenty years of work and, as Knox says, each picture has twenty to thirty paintings underneath. With a cult following among art aficionados Martin is truly a New York treasure, and the "Women: Black and White" pieces are gems of invention and painterly skill.

Knox Martin Radical Structures at HOLLIS TAGGART
Forty years ago, a young knuckle-head from Idaho landed at the Art Students League on the GI Bill. He’d spent a couple of years in Europe visiting the major museums and galleries, but still hadn’t an idea of what it meant to be an artist, let alone a painter. Attracted to Martin’s class from seeing his goofy hard-edge paintings of women in the ASL catalog, this newbie was introduced to the esoteric wisdom of painting, composition and the New York art world by Knox Martin.
On May 2, 2019, your correspondent hopped on his bike and pedaled into Chelsea from his studio in Brooklyn to catch a glimpse of Knox and his latest show at Hollis Taggart. Titled “Radical Structures” this is a retrospective exhibition of nearly 70 years of painting. Gosh, Knox is now 96 years old, and still cran...

Knox Martin’s impressive career spans nearly seven decades and has borne witness to several of the largest artistic movements in American history. Knox’s work has engaged with a wide range of aesthetic influences and has been defined by his use of bright colors, bold architectural lines and artistic references to the female form, which often serves as a source of artistic inspiration for the artist. Knox’s two best-known murals in New York City are Venus and Woman with Bicycle. Knox has been the recipient of many grants and awards.
Board President of the AMA, Chris Hightower said, “We are so thrilled to be working closely with Knox on this exhibit. It's a rare opportunity to work directly with a living artist of this caliber during his lifetime. Curating this exhibit is an honor for our museum and hosting it in Arlington is a coup for the entire North Texas region.”
Board President of The Art Students League of New York, Robin Lechter Frank said, “Knox Martin is not only a living legend in the art world but also within the halls of The League. His passion for art, his legendary talks and his love of mentoring will forever be woven into our legacy.”

The show features some of his masterpieces from the 1960s-70s, and viewers will witness two parts, one at the Chelsea Gallery, and the other, a one-man presentation at the 2019 FRIEZE New York Art Fair. This program was recorded May 2, and May 5, 2019.
