On January 26,2013 Jim Ryun spoke at LA84 Foundation Advanced Track & Field Clinic at Mt. San Antonio College. In this video he speaks about the High School training methods his coaches utilized in the mid-60's.
He also discusses his secret breakfast formula for morning runs - Eat a can of Campbell's Tomato Soup and a thick Peanut Butter Sandwich with Honey.

Drew I can second most of what you have said and I guess I got to see much of it first hand. I also knew Timmy before he was Jim's coach (we coached against each other with our age-group swim clubs, and could he get the most out of his kids). He did apply swim-type workouts to the runners in many cases, but who is to say what he was doing was not the best thing for that one (or even another) athlete. I have a file of Jim's workouts from his Junior year in HS (given to me by Timmons), and a good example was the week in which Wednesday was 50 X 400 in 69, with a 3-minute send-off (swim terminology). A lot of work, but not so fast (I am sure many could run a lot of 400s if each was 10 seconds slower than mile race pace). Interestingly, the next day was 18X800 -- guess what the speed was -- 2:45. Now that is slower than threshold pace and I am sure Jim could have run a steady 9 miles at 5:30 a mile, but it's another swim thing - just do a lot of them and feel good about the pace you are doing...build confidence so when you line up at the start and see Snell on the line with you, you might be thinking, he isn't used to that amount of intervals, repeats or whatever you want to call them. I tested Jim many times leading up to the 72 games and his numbers were definitely up to where they were at any time in his career. I knew that and he knew that and it's anybody's guess why things went the way they did, and anyone can try to guess how the final may have gone with Jim in the race, but I sure was quite certain who would have won.

Jim Ryun was the first US High School Miler to break 4 mintues in a High School Competition Only race. His 3:58.3 to win the mile at the 1965 Kansas High School State Meet is still the record for the fastest time ever in a race that includes only high school competitors. In 2011 Lucas Verzbicas also achieved the feat. Ironically it was in the Jim Ryun High School Dream Mile at Icahn Stadium in New York City in a time of 3:59:71.

Most of the last lap of the last lap of the 1500 meter run in the USA vs Germany Dual Meet in August of 1967. Jim Ryun stuns the field - and spectators - with a 36.4 last 300 meters (winning the race in 3:38.2, worth about a 3:55 mile - likely worth something better in Ryun's case). I will hunt for footage of the full last lap and will post it asap.
While German papers reported Ryun had run the final 300 in 36.4 - 36.5 (about 48.5 pace for a full 400) there have been varying accounts as to Ryun's splits for each of the 100 meter segments over the final 300, never mind the final 400. Ryun's last lap was reported as 50.6 - but there is some evidence the timers were so stunned by the last lap, they added about a second to Ryun's finish in order for him to appear less superhuman, with Ryun's last lap reported by some as sub 50. When we get footage of the full last lap we'll know for sure.
Yes, we can expect the usual suspects to chime in, like "Deano" who will tell us that only Lord Coe would have actually been able to run a final 300 like Ryun's in a sub 3:40 1500 - something Coe never did of course, while reminding us Hicham El Guerrouj would never have been able to beat Coe over a 1500 no matter what tactics history's all-time great from Morocco were to employ. Different runners in different times, hard to compare them. This is why, unfortunately, I have set this up so I can "approve" comments - I don't want the usual crap filling the comments section - I want to keep it clutter free. If the comments are legit, I'll let them go. People who aren't blindly hypnotized by hero worship (or hate) do realize Ryun never reached his potential, and will leave it at that. One can probably say Ryun had at least as much potential over the 1500/mile as anyone else who ever ran the distance.
What one can take away from this particular race is that no other miler has shown a blast like this over the final 300 - meaning the way Ryun accelerated and continued to pull away with a sub 37 final 300 in a sub 3:40 1500. Not even Steve Ovett's final lap at the '77 World Cup matches this one by Ryun - cinder or dirt track here in the '67 race. A tactic like this would of course short circuit any runner's plans to try and wait until the final 80 - 100 meters to kick, as any all time great would be in high gear just trying to hang until the final straight. Then it would probably be a matter of seeing who tied up the least. That is, if the runner were still within 4 or 5 meters of Ryun once they hit the homestretch. Yes, the usual suspects will chime in with remarks about so and so being 18 inches from the curb here, out in lane two there, cutting in here, meaning so and so must have really run a full second faster than Ryun here...it becomes ludicrous. Ryun is wide around the first turn and wide down most of the backstretch. He ran what he ran. ; )

World Record holder Ryun had won 47 straight 1500m./miles going into this race and in their previous meetings completely dominated Keino.The Kenyan,fearing Ryun's awesome last lap kick set off on a suicidal third lap of 58.1 seconds to try and nullify the threat and it worked a treat.Keino was no less than 6 seconds ahead at the 1200m. mark.Although Ryun rallyed with a last lap of 55.7,closing to within 3 seconds to take the silver,it was never going to be enough.Decades later it still seems strange that Ryun didn't react quicker to Keino's third lap burst....it's not as though they were strangers to each other.To be fair,Keino's time was the second fastest 1500m. ever run...a classic.

James Ronald ("Jim") Ryun (born April 29, 1947) is an American former track athlete and politician, who was a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from 1996 to 2007, representing the 2nd District in Kansas. In the 2006 election, Ryun was defeated by Democratic challenger Nancy Boyda. In the Kansas Republican primary on August 5, 2008, he was defeated by Kansas State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins.
Years prior to his political career, Ryun had an athletic career that saw him become a world-class runner and the last American to hold the world record in the mile run. His career was highlighted by many world record times and a silver medal in the 1500 m at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
In 1966, at age nineteen, Ryun set world records in the mile and the half-mile runs, and received Sports Illustrated magazine's "Sportsman of the Year" award, as well as the James E. Sullivan Award as the nation's top amateur athlete, the ABC's Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year, and was voted Track & Field News' Athlete of the Year as the world’s best track & field athlete. Ironically, Ryun did all of this before he was permitted to run for the school he attended, University of Kansas, since NCAA rules at the time did not allow freshmen to compete in NCAA competition. In 1967 Ryun ran a world record in the indoor half mile (1:48.3) and outdoors lowered his world-record time in the mile from 3:51.3 to 3:51.1, a record that stood for almost eight years. That same year he set the world record for the 1500 meters in 3:33.1, running his last lap in a blazing 53.3 seconds and his final 1,200 meters in an amazing 2:46.6.

When one mentions Kansas track and field it is hard not to hear the name Jim Ryun shortly afterwards. The Wichita, Kan. native burst onto the collegiate scene after becoming the first high school runner to achieve a four-minute mile. Ryun's prowess grew during his time at KU as he continued to set records and in the process make a name for himself in the sport on an international stage. Ryun competed in a total of three different Olympic Games, winning a silver medal in 1968 at Mexico City. All in all the Jayhawk turned international athletic marvel set a total of five world records during his illustrious career. Ryun continued to run following his collegiate and professional career, but this time in the political arena as he was elected to the U.S House of Representatives where he represented the second district of Kansas for a decade. On January 26,2013 Jim Ryun spoke at LA84 Foundation Advanced Track & Field Clinic at Mt. San Antonio College. In this video he speaks about the High School training methods his coaches utilized in the mid-60's. He also discusses his secret breakfast formula for morning runs - Eat a can of Campbell's Tomato Soup and a thick Peanut Butter Sandwich with Honey. Some think Ryan was over-trained. Jim Ryun was the first US High School Miler to break 4 mintues in a High School Competition Only race. His 3:58.3 to win the mile at the 1965 Kansas High School State Meet is still the record for the fastest time ever in a race that includes only high school competitors. In 2011 Lucas Verzbicas also achieved the feat. Ironically it was in the Jim Ryun High School Dream Mile at Icahn Stadium in New York City in a time of 3:59:71. -

Most of the last lap of the last lap of the 1500 meter run in the USA vs Germany Dual Meet in August of 1967. Jim Ryun stuns the field - and spectators - with a 36.4 last 300 meters (winning the race in 3:38.2, worth about a 3:55 mile - likely worth something better in Ryun's case). I will hunt for footage of the full last lap and will post it asap. While German papers reported Ryun had run the final 300 in 36.4 - 36.5 (about 48.5 pace for a full 400) there have been varying accounts as to Ryun's splits for each of the 100 meter segments over the final 300, never mind the final 400. Ryun's last lap was reported as 50.6 - but there is some evidence the timers were so stunned by the last lap, they added about a second to Ryun's finish in order for him to appear less superhuman, with Ryun's ... -
Keino v.Ryun.1500m.1968 Olympic Games,Mexico City
World Record holder Ryun had won 47 straight 1500m./miles going into this race and in their previous meetings completely dominated Keino.The Kenyan,fearing Ryun's awesome last lap kick set off on a suicidal third lap of 58.1 seconds to try and nullify the threat and it worked a treat.Keino was no less than 6 seconds ahead at the 1200m. mark.Although Ryun rallyed with a last lap of 55.7,closing to within 3 seconds to take the silver,it was never going to be enough.Decades later it still seems strange that Ryun didn't react quicker to Keino's third lap burst....it's not as though they were strangers to each other.To be fair,Keino's time was the second fastest 1500m. ever run...a classic. -

Kansas Athletics Throwback Thursday - Jim Ryun
When one mentions Kansas track and field it is hard not to hear the name Jim Ryun shortly afterwards. The Wichita, Kan. native burst onto the collegiate scene after becoming the first high school runner to achieve a four-minute mile. Ryun's prowess grew during his time at KU as he continued to set records and in the process make a name for himself in the sport on an international stage. Ryun competed in a total of three different Olympic Games, winning a silver medal in 1968 at Mexico City. Probably Ryun's greatest run, still only 20 years old,knocking a mind boggling two and a half seconds off of Herb Elliott's seven year old world record. This clip is far too short to do the race justice (anyone out there got the full race?) but ,after a slow half lap and a first lap of 60.9,Keino led the next lap in 56 seconds.Still together at the bell Ryun took off with a final lap in 53.9 to record 3.33.1,leaving a well beaten Keino to take second in 3.37.2. An all time classic.The final commentary suggested that on the back of this defeat Keino would not bother racing Ryun over this distance at the following year's Olympics.Bet Ryun wish he hadn't changed his mind!? . -

I have a file of Jim's workouts from his Junior year in HS (given to me by Timmons), and a good example was the week in which Wednesday was 50 X 400 in 69, with a 3-minute send-off (swim terminology). A lot of work, but not so fast (I am sure many could run a lot of 400s if each was 10 seconds slower than mile race pace). Interestingly, the next day was 18X800 -- guess what the speed was -- 2:45. Now that is slower than threshold pace and I am sure Jim could have run a steady 9 miles at 5:30 a mile, but it's another swim thing - just do a lot of them and feel good about the pace you are doing...build confidence so when you line up at the start and see Snell on the line with you, you might be thinking, he isn't used to that amount of intervals, repeats or whatever you want to call them. I tested Jim many times leading up to the 72 games and his numbers were definitely up to where they were at any time in his career. I knew that and he knew that and it's anybody's guess why things went the way they did, and anyone can try to guess how the final may have gone with Jim in the race, but I sure was quite certain who would have won.

Yes, we can expect the usual suspects to chime in, like "Deano" who will tell us that only Lord Coe would have actually been able to run a final 300 like Ryun's in a sub 3:40 1500 - something Coe never did of course, while reminding us Hicham El Guerrouj would never have been able to beat Coe over a 1500 no matter what tactics history's all-time great from Morocco were to employ. Different runners in different times, hard to compare them. This is why, unfortunately, I have set this up so I can "approve" comments - I don't want the usual crap filling the comments section - I want to keep it clutter free. If the comments are legit, I'll let them go. People who aren't blindly hypnotized by hero worship (or hate) do realize Ryun never reached his potential, and will leave it at that. One can probably say Ryun had at least as much potential over the 1500/mile as anyone else who ever ran the distance.
What one can take away from this particular race is that no other miler has shown a blast like this over the final 300 - meaning the way Ryun accelerated and continued to pull away with a sub 37 final 300 in a sub 3:40 1500. Not even Steve Ovett's final lap at the '77 World Cup matches this one by Ryun - cinder or dirt track here in the '67 race. A tactic like this would of course short circuit any runner's plans to try and wait until the final 80 - 100 meters to kick, as any all time great would be in high gear just trying to hang until the final straight. Then it would probably be a matter of seeing who tied up the least. That is, if the runner were still within 4 or 5 meters of Ryun once they hit the homestretch. Yes, the usual suspects will chime in with remarks about so and so being 18 inches from the curb here, out in lane two there, cutting in here, meaning so and so must have really run a full second faster than Ryun here...it becomes ludicrous. Ryun is wide around the first turn and wide down most of the backstretch. He ran what he ran. ; )

World Record holder Ryun had won 47 straight 1500m./miles going into this race and in their previous meetings completely dominated Keino.The Kenyan,fearing Ryun's awesome last lap kick set off on a suicidal third lap of 58.1 seconds to try and nullify the threat and it worked a treat.Keino was no less than 6 seconds ahead at the 1200m. mark.Although Ryun rallyed with a last lap of 55.7,closing to within 3 seconds to take the silver,it was never going to be enough.Decades later it still seems strange that Ryun didn't react quicker to Keino's third lap burst....it's not as though they were strangers to each other.To be fair,Keino's time was the second fastest 1500m. ever run...a classic.

The Wichita, Kan. native burst onto the collegiate scene after becoming the first high school runner to achieve a four-minute mile. Ryun's prowess grew during his time at KU as he continued to set records and in the process make a name for himself in the sport on an international stage. Ryun competed in a total of three different Olympic Games, winning a silver medal in 1968 at Mexico City. All in all the Jayhawk turned international athletic marvel set a total of five world records during his illustrious career. Ryun continued to run following his collegiate and professional career, but this time in the political arena as he was elected to the U.S House of Representatives where he represented the second district of Kansas for a decade. Ryun continues to influence the sport he made a name for himself in, helping younger runners achieve their goals through 'Ryun Running' and the Adidas Jim Ryun High School Dream Mile.'

This clip is far too short to do the race justice (anyone out there got the full race?) but ,after a slow half lap and a first lap of 60.9,Keino led the next lap in 56 seconds.Still together at the bell Ryun took off with a final lap in 53.9 to record 3.33.1,leaving a well beaten Keino to take second in 3.37.2. An all time classic.The final commentary suggested that on the back of this defeat Keino would not bother racing Ryun over this distance at the following year's Olympics.Bet Ryun wish he hadn't changed his mind!?

On January 26,2013 Jim Ryun spoke at LA84 Foundation Advanced Track & Field Clinic at Mt. San Antonio College. In this video he talks about his first High School running experience (Cross Country) as a sophomore in high school. Ryun attended a 3-year High School, Wichita East. In his "freshman year he did junior high track, running maybe a couple miles (total) a week. Ditto the summer between frosh and soph years when he was training for the 440 in the Junior Olympics. His ambition, entering high school, was to be a 440 man and maybe letter as a senior. During the course of just his soph year, he went from a 5:38 mile in the first team time trial (in cross-country season) to sub-4:10 in AAU competition the following summer."
In High School Cross Country he started out as the low man on the totem pole - was on the 'C' Team - by the end of Cross Country season he was the best runner on a state championship team - He finished 6th at the state meet.

Leo Manzano's acceptance speech for Competitor.com's 2012 Running Performance of the Year award was short and characteristically humble: before commenting on his own achievement, Manzano first saluted Jim Ryun, who earned the U.S. its last silver medal in the 1500-meter competition in 1968. When Manzano, UT Austin's most-decorated track and field athlete, isn't training for the next Olympic games, he gives generously with his time, such as teaming with the Texas Heart Institute to teach children about heart health.
