Mr. Green's Session The soft spoken falsetto voice of The Williams Brothers, Henry Green, has stepped to the forefront with the CD titled Mr. Green's Session. This is an outstanding CD. Not because Green (as Mr. Green is affectionately called) sings; because he really does very little signing on the CD; but because of the many exceptional artists that contribute their talents to this project. Therefore, for the month of March, we review Henry Green's Mr. Green's Session. Check out the line up of those participating in this project, and you know immediately that it has got to be good. Besides The Williams Brothers, there are John P. Kee, Rance Allen, Keith "Wonderboy" Johnson, Neal Roberson, Harvey Watkins, Jr., Ron Staples, Beverly Crawford, Huey Williams, and Dottie Peoples. Musicians include Dwight Gordon, Castro Coleman, Timothy Hudson and Derrick Lee. Green has a prelude and 2 interludes on this CD that essentially set the tone for the listener to better understand his place in gospel music history. After the prelude, Green and Melvin Williams share lead duties on "My Story." This is an upbeat song with heavy instrumentation. The song is ideal for Green, in that he gets to showcase his vocal abilities and at the same time tells a great story about God brining him over many challenges. John P. Kee will have you on your feet and clapping your hands with "There's Been A Change." John has, in the past effectively joined quartet, chorale and choirs styles into his own unique style of traditional gospel music. And this song is one of the best traditional songs he has recorded in quite sometime. You will certainly enjoy this song. Rance Allen takes the microphone with "Leaning & Depending." If you liked Rance's CD Miracle Worker, then this song is for you. At times, you may anticipate that Rance is about to jump right in with "Miracle Worker." There are lots of similarities to the arrangements of this song and that of "Miracle Worker." Rance always gives you his best, and with this song, he does just that. Keith contributes his hard driving style to "I'm Ready." For those that have listened to the entire Unity project, this song picks up where the Unity project ends. In gospel circles everyone probably would like to record with Neal Roberson and he has appeared on the projects of many artists. He slows Green's Session down with "Faithful." He is backed up with the EnPraise Singers. What a powerful song. Harvey tells us that there just is not enough time to tell all that the Lord has done. "Count My Blessings" is vintage Canton Spirituals. EnPraise Singers also back up Ron Staples in the singing of "Everything's Gonna Be Alright." It would not be a surprise to find this song on one of The Mighty Clouds of Joy's future recordings. Sing Ron. Beverly Crawford sings a great praise and worship song -- "You Are." At first, you may be inclined to skip this song because it starts off very slow. But, give it the time it rightfully deserves. This is a great song. The words will encourage you and at the same time really make you think about your relationship with our Lord and Savior. Huey tell us that there is really only "One Friend" that we should rely upon. This tract will remind you of The Jackson Southernaires of the seventies. Huey really puts a lot of energy into this song. And the harmony of the background singers is one of the best of this project. Doug and Lowell Pye share lead duties on "Life." This is one of the other songs on the project that some may consider a praise and worship song. Doug, along with Stan Jones, also shares lead duties on "In The Midst." This is the Christmas song on the project. The song will ensure that this project will be highly sought after during the Christmas time of the year. Dottie Peoples take you back to the 'old time ways' with "Blessed Quietness." EnPraise also backs her up on this song. Yes, this song will definitely remind you of some of Dottie's earlier recordings. Melvin sings a song that should be in heavy rotation during the Easter time of the year -- "He Saw Me." The song begins with the story of one of the thieves asking Jesus why He doesn't save Himself. Melvin really sings this ballad. You are encouraged to really listen to the words to this song. Throughout this recoding you will find that the production is excellent, the vocals are very clear and exceptionally crisp. Although Green does not sing much on this project, he really does present a good project for fans of gospel quartet music. Therefore, we give Henry Green's Mr. Green's Session a 9 out of 10.
