Plot: Columbia's 6th serial (following "The Spider's Web" and preceding "Mandrake the Magician") is a pre-WW II sabre-rattler that has planes crashing, secret plans disappearing and a reign of terror sweeping the USA as (unidentified) enemy spies strike at the nation's defenses. Four flying G-Men, Hal Andrews, Bart Davis, John Cummings and Charles Bronson, are assigned to the crisis. The four agree that one of them shall assume a mysterious identity so he can strike with the swiftness of a falcon...and the result is The Black Falcon, whose identity is unknown only to those who didn't have the screen credits to look at. The Falcon has a black leather flying outfit that is handier to get to when needed than the Durango Kid's horse, while his two remaining partners are stuck with your basic gray (Bronson gets knocked off early), and together they are close to being a precursor to "Blackhawk" and his band. With the aid of Babs McKay and her kid brother Billy and his band of Junior Air Defenders, the three Flying G-Men keep a straight face as they face the legions of henchmen sent their way by the unknown master-mind spy chief. Keeping a straight face is not easy to do when facing a gang of henchmen directed by James W. Horne behind the over-wrought narration of Knox Manning.

It's a timeless classic of children's literature and the third most-quoted book in English after the Bible and Shakespeare. But what lies behind the extraordinary appeal of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to generations of adults and children alike?
To mark the 150th anniversary of its publication, this documentary explores the life and imagination of the man who wrote it, the Reverend Charles Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll. Broadcaster and journalist Martha Kearney delves into the biographies of both Carroll himself and of the young girl, Alice Liddell, who inspired his most famous creation.
Kearney's lifelong passion for Carroll's work began as a young girl, when she starred as Carroll's heroine Alice in her local village play. She discusses the book with a range of experts, biographers and distinguished cultural figures - from the actor Richard E Grant to children's author Philip Pullman - and explores with them the mystery of how a retiring, buttoned-up and meticulous mathematics don, who spent almost his entire life within the cloistered confines of Christ Church Oxford, was able to capture the world of childhood in such a captivating way.

Born in Cheshire, Charles was the third of 11 children.
Dodgson suffered from a bad stammer and was deaf in one ear.
Dodgson's first piece of work under his pen name was a romantic poem called Solitude, published in 1856
Alternative titles considered for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland included Alice Among the Fairies and Alice's Golden Hour.
Dodgson denied that Alice was based on his real life friend, Alice Liddell.
An acrostic poem is where the first letter on each line makes up a word or words. Such a poem can be found at the end of Through the Looking Glass which spells out Alice Liddell's name, leading people to believe that he did in fact base the character after his real life friend.
Queen Victoria supposedly was a big fan of the book and suggested to Dodgson that he dedicate his next book to her - Carroll denied this to be true.
Dodgson took up photography and excelled at the art. He photographed many famous people include Alfred Lord Tennyson and created approximately 3000 images. But after 24 years of taking pictures he abruptly stopped.
Chess figured prominently in Dodgson's work. References to the game can be found in Through the Looking Glass. Some of his photographs feature chess being played and it has been documented that Dodgson was an avid player.

The first-ever film version of Lewis Carroll's tale has recently been restored by the BFI National Archive from severely damaged materials. Made just 37 years after Lewis Carroll wrote his novel and eight years after the birth of cinema, the adaptation was directed by Cecil Hepworth and Percy Stow, and was based on Sir John Tenniel's original illustrations. In an act that was to echo more than 100 years later, Hepworth cast his wife as the Red Queen, and he himself appears as the Frog Footman. Even the Cheshire cat is played by a family pet.
With a running time of just 12 minutes (8 of which survive), Alice in Wonderland was the longest film produced in England at that time. Film archivists have been able to restore the film's original colours for the first time in over 100 years.
Music: 'Jill in the Box', composed and performed by Wendy Hiscocks.
This restoration was supported by The Headley Trust and The Pilgrim Trust.

His first novel, Grimus (1975), a part-science fiction tale, was generally ignored by the public and literary critics. His next novel, Midnight's Children (1981), catapulted him to literary notability. This work won the 1981 Booker Prize and, in 1993 and 2008, was awarded the Best of the Bookers as the best novel to have received the prize during its first 25 and 40 years.[16] Midnight's Children

Salman Rushdie: Books, Affair, Biography, Controversy, Fatwa, History, Influences - Interview (2010)

His first novel, Grimus (1975), a part-science fiction tale, was generally ignored by the public and literary critics. His next novel, Midnight's Children (1981), catapulted him to literary notability. This work won the 1981 Booker Prize and, in 1993 and 2008, was awarded the Best of the Bookers as the best novel to have received the prize during its first 25 and 40 years.[16] Midnight's Children follows the life of a child, born at the stroke of midnight as India gained its independence, who is endowed with special powers and a connection to other children born at the dawn of a new and tumultuous age in the history of the Indian sub-continent and the birth of the modern nation of India. The character of Saleem Sinai has been compared to Rushdie.[17] However, the author has refuted the idea of having written any of his characters as autobiographical, stating, "People assume that because certain things in the character are drawn from your own experience, it just becomes you. In that sense, I've never felt that I've written an autobiographical character."[18]
After Midnight's Children, Rushdie wrote Shame (1983), in which he depicts the political turmoil in Pakistan, basing his characters on Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq. Shame won France's Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger (Best Foreign Book) and was a close runner-up for the Booker Prize. Both these works of postcolonial literature are characterised by a style of magic realism and the immigrant outlook that Rushdie is very conscious of as a member of the Indian diaspora.
Rushdie wrote a non-fiction book about Nicaragua in 1987 called The Jaguar Smile. This book has a political focus and is based on his first-hand experiences and research at the scene of Sandinista political experiments.
His most controversial work, The Satanic Verses, was published in 1988 (see section below).
In addition to books, Rushdie has published many short stories, including those collected in East, West (1994). The Moor's Last Sigh, a family epic ranging over some 100 years of India's history was published in 1995. The Ground Beneath Her Feet (1999) presents an alternative history of modern rock music. The song of the same name by U2 is one of many song lyrics included in the book; hence Rushdie is credited as the lyricist. He also wrote Haroun and the Sea of Stories in 1990.
Rushdie has had a string of commercially successful and critically acclaimed novels. His 2005 novel Shalimar the Clown received, in India, the prestigious Hutch Crossword Book Award, and was, in Britain, a finalist for the Whitbread Book Awards. It was shortlisted for the 2007 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.[19]
In his 2002 non-fiction collection Step Across This Line, he professes his admiration for the Italian writer Italo Calvino and the American writer Thomas Pynchon, among others. His early influences included Jorge Luis Borges, Mikhail Bulgakov, Lewis Carroll, Günter Grass, and James Joyce. Rushdie was a personal friend of Angela Carter's and praised her highly in the foreword for her collection Burning your Boats.
His novel Luka and the Fire of Life was published in November 2010. Earlier that year, he announced that he was writing his memoirs,[20] entitled Joseph Anton: A Memoir, which was published in September 2012.
In 2012, Salman Rushdie became one of the first major authors to embrace Booktrack (a company that synchronises ebooks with customised soundtracks), when he published his short story "In the South" on the platform.

Host Rich Fahle interviews Gregory Maguire about his latest book, “After Alice” at BookCon 2015.
FROM THE PUBLISHER:
From the multi-million-copy bestselling author of Wicked comes a magical new twist on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, published to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Lewis’s Carroll’s beloved classic.
When Alice toppled down the rabbit-hole 150 years ago, she found a Wonderland as rife with inconsistent rules and abrasive egos as the world she left behind. But what of that world? How did 1860s Oxford react to Alice’s disappearance?
In this brilliant work of fiction, Gregory Maguire turns his dazzling imagination to the question of underworlds, undergrounds, underpinnings—and understandings old and new, offering an inventive spin on Carroll’s enduring tale. Ada, a friend of Alice’s mentioned briefly in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, is off to visit her friend, but arrives a moment too late—and tumbles down the rabbit-hole herself.
Ada brings to Wonderland her own imperfect apprehension of cause and effect as she embarks on an odyssey to find Alice and see her safely home from this surreal world below the world. If Eurydice can ever be returned to the arms of Orpheus, or Lazarus can be raised from the tomb, perhaps Alice can be returned to life. Either way, everything that happens next is “After Alice.”

wn.com/Gregory Maguire Interview At Bookcon 2015

20th Anniversary Christmas Time's A Comin' CD featuring "In the Heat of the Night" Cast and Friends
Actor Carroll O'Connor portrayed "Chief Bill Gillespie" on TV's "In the Heat of the Night" and "Archie Bunker" on "All in the Family."
Here CD producer and fellow In the Heat of the Night cast member Randall Franks is featured from a 1990 interview about Carroll's performance of "Bring A Torch, Jeanette Isabella" as part of the "Christmas Time's A Comin'" CD featuring the "In the Heat of the Night" Cast and Friends.
Randall Franks (randallfranks.com) and his In the Heat of the Night co-star Alan Autry (autryentertainmentgroup.com) joined forces under the banner of Autry-Franks Productions in 1990 to produce the charity In the Heat of the Night CD Christmas Time's A Comin' featuring the cast of the show. Included here are vintage interviews about the project and never before seen in-studio footage also including Carroll O'Connor, David Hart, Geoffrey Thorne, Wilbur Fitzgerald, Bob Penny, and Sharon Pratt in addition to Franks and Autry.
The project raised funds for drug abuse prevention charities throughout the United States.
Hart joined in with other cast members and music stars to perform on "Jingle Bells" and "Christmas Time's A Comin'". Franks and Autry were able to include many music legends, some among them, Country Music Hall of Famers Kitty Wells, Jimmy Dickens, and Pee Wee King as well as many top legends from the Bluegrass genre, from Jim and Jesse to the Lewis Family. The Christmas Time's A Comin' CD released on Sonlite and MGM/UA was one of the most popular Christmas releases of 1991 and 1992 with Southern retailers.
Autry and Franks mark the 20th Anniversary in 2012 with a charity re-release with the original companies benefiting the same charitable goal from the non-profit Share America Foundation, Inc. (www.shareamericafoundation.org)

Balthus, the Polish-French modern classical artist
Balthus's style is primarily classical. His work shows numerous influences, including the writings of Emily Brontë, the writings and photography of Lewis Carroll, and the paintings of Masaccio, Piero della Francesca, Simone Martini, Poussin, Jean-Étienne Liotard, Joseph Reinhardt, Géricault, Ingres, Goya, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Courbet, Edgar Degas, Félix Vallotton and Paul Cézanne. Although his technique and compositions were inspired by pre-renaissance painters, there also are eerie intimations of contemporary surrealists like de Chirico. Painting the figure at a time when figurative art was largely ignored, he is widely recognised as an important 20th-century artist.
