After living in Budapest for 9 months and trying to fit in Hungarian study where I could, here's my first long conversation in Hungarian with my friend Bálint, founder and editor of Hungary's top language learning blog "Öt év öt nyelv". Given that my vocabulary is still relatively small, I had to find myself talking around my gaps and trying my best to say what I wanted to say with the words I've got. Bálint helped me now and then, but generally I think this was OK! My Hungarian is still a work in progress, and making this video has given me a boost to carry on learning.

Most people wonder where the Hungarian language comes from but have no idea. Some germans say its a barbaric language which later became germanized. Slavs say its a mongol language that became slavized. Other slavs say Hungarians did not even speak, all the words are from slavic. Some romanians say it is a mixture of daco-romanian and mongol. Turks say its simply a turkic dialect. And last, but not at least the craziest theory is accepted worldwide at present, the finno-ugric.
So many theories, without a proveable basis.
But let us leave theories behind, and see which languages show grammatical and word similarities. Let us see what kind of writing can be found in the Hungarian language.

Senior CELTA trainer, Neil Anderson, talks about whether Hungarian really is as difficult to learner as people say it is.
Summary
Neil concedes that Hungarian is a difficult language, but that this should not be a concern: CELTA applicants who come to Budapest a) are able to pick up the basics of Hungarian b) English is widely spoken in Budapest. It is therefore not difficult for CELTA trainees to get around and enjoy living in Budapest. He has some advice concerning Hungarian for all those who wish to teach EFL (English as a Foreign Language) in Budapest: it is worth learning some Hungarian as Hungarians will be very appreciative of the effort made, even if they will not always understand what you have said.

• People interested in gaining employment in the TEFL industry but have no teaching experience and little knowledge of TEFL and other relevant teaching qualifications such as the CELTA
• CELTA course applicants, participants and graduates who are looking at Budapest / Hungary as a possible destination

The Cambridge CELTA is the most widely recognised initial qualification in teaching English as a foreign language, recognised by language schools in dozens of countries around the world. In short, it is the qualification you want to have if you plan to seek employment as an English language teacher in a quality language school. When your prospective employer sees that you have completed the CELTA-- and at a reputable training centre such as IH Budapest-- you are in a far better position than applicants who don't have the Cambridge qualification.

Hungarian (Hungarian: magyar 
listen (help·info)) is a Uralic language, part of the Ugric group, spoken by the Hungarians. It is the most widely spoken non-Indo-European language in Europe, based on the number of native speakers. Hungarian is the official language of Hungary and is also spoken by Hungarian communities in the seven neighboring countries and by diaspora communities worldwide.
The Hungarian name for the language is magyar [ˈmɒɟɒr], which is also occasionally used as an English word to refer to the Hungarian people as an ethnic group.
Hungarian is a Uralic language, more specifically an Ugric language; the most closely related languages are Mansi and Khanty of western Siberia (see Khanty–Mansia). Connections between the Ugric and many other languages were noticed in the 1670s and established, along with the entire Uralic family, in 1717, although the classification of Hungarian continued to be a matter of political controversy into the 18th and even 19th centuries. The name of Hungary could be a result of regular sound changes of Ungrian/Ugrian, and the fact that the Eastern Slavs referred to Hungarians as Ǫgry/Ǫgrove (sg. Ǫgrinŭ) seemed to confirm that. As to the source of this ethnonym in the Slavic languages, current literature favors the hypothesis that it comes from the name of the Turkic tribe Onogur (which means "ten arrows" or "ten tribes").
