The Byrds - Under Review (Part 1 of 17).mp4
'The Byrds Under Review' is a documentary film which explores in detail the music, career and background of arguably America's most influential band. Inventors of folk-rock and country-rock, and with a sizeable investment in what became garage-rock (and ultimately Punk), The Byrds could barely write a song without creating a new genre.
With the aid of many who were there at the time, as either par

Although they only attained the huge success of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and the Beach Boys for a short time in the mid-'60s, time has judged the Byrds to be nearly as influential as those groups in the long run. They were not solely responsible for devising folk-rock, but they were certainly more responsible than any other single act (Dylan included) for melding the innovations and energy of the British Invasion with the best lyrical and musical elements of contemporary folk music. The jangling, 12-string guitar sound of leader Roger McGuinn's Rickenbacker was permanently absorbed into the vocabulary of rock. They also played a vital role in pioneering psychedelic rock and country-rock, the unifying element being their angelic harmonies and restless eclecticism.
Often described in their early days as a hybrid of Dylan and the Beatles, the Byrds in turn influenced Dylan and the Beatles almost as much as Bob and the Fab Four had influenced the Byrds. The Byrds' innovations have echoed nearly as strongly through subsequent generations, in the work of Tom Petty, R.E.M., and innumerable alternative bands of the post-punk era that feature those jangling guitars and dense harmonies.
Although the Byrds had perfected their blend of folk and rock when their debut single, "Mr. Tambourine Man," topped the charts in mid-1965, it was something of a miracle that the group had managed to coalesce in the first place. Not a single member of the original quintet had extensive experience on electric instruments. Jim McGuinn (he'd change his first name to Roger a few years later), David Crosby, and Gene Clark were all young veterans of both commercial folk-pop troupes and the acoustic coffeehouse scene. They were inspired by the success of the Beatles to mix folk and rock; McGuinn had already been playing Beatles songs acoustically in Los Angeles folk clubs when Clark approached him to form an act, according to subsequent recollections, in the Peter & Gordon style. David Crosby soon joined to make them a trio, and they made a primitive demo as the Jet Set that was nonetheless bursting with promise. With the help of session musicians, they released a single on Elektra as the Beefeaters that, while a flop, showed them getting quite close to the folk-rock sound that would electrify the pop scene in a few months.
The Beefeaters, were soon renamed the Byrds.

From Wikipedia:
Fifth Dimension is the third album by the American rock band The Byrds and was released in July 1966 on Columbia Records. Most of the album was recorded following the February 1966 departure of the band's principal songwriter Gene Clark. In an attempt to compensate for Clark's absence, guitarists Jim McGuinn and David Crosby stepped into the breach and increased their songwriting output. In spite of this, the loss of Clark resulted in an uneven album that included a total of four cover versions and an instrumental. However, the album is notable for being the first by The Byrds not to include any songs written by Bob Dylan, whose material had previously been a mainstay of the band's repertoire.

This is a pre-recorded backing track with live vocals. Unfortunately Gene & David's mics are mixed low, so we don't quite get the full "Byrds Splendor" as far as the harmonies go.
Listen to how the tape slows down during Crosby's close-up.
Busted!! :-)
This and the Sullivan shows are the only colour footage that I know of from the "Original 5".
Michael Landon being the host on this October evening, he was riding high on "Bonanza" at the time.

With the aid of many who were there at the time, as either part of the group or close at hand, this film is a celebration of one of Rock N' Roll's truly great bands featuring:
• Rare and classic performances re-assessed by our panel of experts
• Footage and interviews from then and now
• Exclusive and extensive contributions from Byrds members John York and Gene Parsons, plus further enlightenment from collaborators such as producer and arrange Van Dyke Parks, LA scenester and Wrecking Crew guitarist Jerry Cole, fiddle player Byron Berline and country guitarist Vern Gosdin
• Opinion, review and critique from; The Byrds esteemed biographer Johnny Rogan; ex-Rolling Stone editor Anthony De Curtis; legendary music historian and author of Eight Miles High: Folk-Rock's Flight from Haight-Ashbury to Woodstock, Richie Unterberger and British music journalist and author Nigel Williamson
• Seldom seen footage of pre-Byrds collectives
• Live and studio recordings of Byrds classics such as Mr. Tambourine Man, I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better, Eight Miles High, Mr Spaceman, So You Want To Be A Rock N' Roll Star, Hickory Wind, Chestnut Mare and many others.

COMPLETELY LIVE performance from "The Big...", including David McCallum's intro!!
A very rare treat; as this is one of only TWO COMPLETELY LIVE performances that the "Original 5" ever did on TV.
On the Ed Sullivan show "Turn!" was live, but "Mr. Tambourine Man" was lip synched.
The original Byrds in all their glory, and their weaknessess, are on good display here.
Exciting because it's all live, and also quite "Jagged" & "Stiff" sounding, as the "Original 5" was never known for their "Tight Live Act", the primitive sound systems of the day notwithstanding.
Rough rythym section, Michael Clarke is playing the songs slow, Gene Clark is playing the tambourine without much sense of metre or time, etc.
In Gene's defense, I would say that he resented the Tambourine, after getting "Stuck" with it when Crosby took the guitar out of hands.
EQUALLY wonderful are the AMAZING audience shots; capturing the fun, exuberance, and exhileration of a mid '60's rock concert.
That's what I'm talkin' about, baby.
This show was filmed on October 19, 1965, and was shown on TV in early 1966.
A VERY HUMOUROUS scene comes at 5:09. As the camera pans past all the girls faces, not knowing quite how to react to this song about a Welsh coal mining disaster, and ends on the face of a jealous boyfriend!
Capturing The Byrds at the peak of their affluence, this is a wonderful, live look at pop history.

Lip synched performance from the band's only TV appearance in Great Britain; "Top Of The...".
The TV debut of David Crosby's cape!!
Note how the host spells out their name: B-Y-R-D-S.
This was to avoid confusion with Ronnie Wood's band, "The Birds", who were starting to make noise around town.
As soon as they got there, The Byrds all got sick; taking them into a "Proper climate" especially affected Chris Hillman, who had to be shot full of vitamins and penicilin just to make the broadcast!!
Note Gene Clark grinning ear to ear; this is rare, but he just spent the previous night hanging w/Paul McCartney. :-)
Michael Clarke was out club hopping w/Brian Jones & John Entwhistle.
The U.K. tour pretty much bombed; bad sound, their weakness as a live act, and the "Anti-stage presence" that they were known for just didn't fly with the Brits.

Roger McGuinn - guitar, vocals
Clarence White - guitar, mandolin
Skip Battin - bass, vocals
Gene Parsons - drums, vocals
This is The Byrds' late show from the final night of a three-night Fillmore West run headlining over Fleetwood Mac and John Hammond, Jr. This performance took place early on in the McGuinn/White/Battin/Parsons lineup, which would last longer than any other Byrds incarnation. At the time of this show, the band was touring to promote their Ballad of Easy Rider LP, which found the group extending their exploration of country music while heading toward a heavier electric rock sound. Ex-Kentucky Colonels guitarist Clarence White is the most fascinating aspect of this lineup, and his innovative string bending techniques are well represented here. McGuinn and White are in separate channels on the tape, resulting in a clear musical dialogue between the guitars. The most interesting performances are the hits, due to their heavier new approach and the incredible guitar interplay between Clarence's sizzling string bending Telecaster and Roger's distinctive 12-string Rickenbacker. "Eight Miles High" had begun to manifest itself as a vehicle for extended jamming, and is performed fantastically here. The recording starts in progress, however, so the first 30 seconds are missing. Other highlights include nice covers of Dylan's "This Wheel's On Fire" and "Positively 4th Street" and rockin' versions of "Jesus Is Just Alright," their single at the time (later to be covered by The Doobie Brothers in the exact same arrangement). This late show delivers the band at their most inspired and enthusiastic, while still upholding the harmonious quality that defined them as The Byrds. For the serious fan and novice both, this show represents a characteristic representation of one of the period's most distinctive and influential bands. Well worth the listen.

This performance also exposes the band's weakness as a "Live act", which they were indeed known for.
Notice on the close-up of Michael Clarke, his foot is not even on the kick drum pedal!!!
The stiff, plodding sound of the rythym section, coupled with the kind of music they were doing, and the '60's sound system situation; all these things really worked against the band.
It's a kick to hear Gene Clark try to cram the word "Probably" into damn near two syllables, as they are playing the song extra fast to fit the allocated time.
Bass players: This is GREAT place to learn the Bass line, because here, Chris Hillman is louder than everything else. :-)

Byrds is the 12th album by the American rock band The Byrds and was released in March 1973. It was recorded as the centerpiece of a reunion between the five original members of The Byrds: Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, David Crosby, ChrisHillman, and Michael Clarke. The last time that all five members had worked together as The Byrds was in 1966, prior to Gene Clark's departure from the band. During the reunion, the current, latter-day line-up of the band continued tomake live appearances until February 1973, with McGuinn being the only member common to both versions of the group.

Upon its release, Byrds received generally poor reviews, with many critics bemoaning a lack of sonic unity and the absence of The Byrds' signature jangly guitar sound among the album's shortcomings. Nonetheless, the album reached #20 on the Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart and was also moderately successful in the United Kingdom, where it reached #31. In the U.S., Byrds was the band's highest charting album of new material since 1965's Turn! Turn! Turn!, which had also been the last Byrds' album to feature Clark as a full member. Three of the album's songs, Full Circle, Things Will Be Better, and Cowgirl in the Sand, were released as singles during 1973 but none of these releases became hits. Byrds is notable for being the last studio album to be recorded by the band to date.

The set begins with The Flying Burrito Brothers kicking things off. The recording misses the first minute or two, beginning at the tail end of the opening number, "The Train Song." A fine cover of Jesse Winchester's "Payday" follows in celebratory style, with Bernie Leadon delivering a hot guitar solo. Things continue heating up on Felice and Boudleaux Bryant's "Wake Up Little Susie," from The Everly Brothers. The FBBs recalls Nick Ashford's "I Don't Need No Doctor." Rick Roberts gets a showcase with his signature song "Colorado." This is followed "Break My Mind." At this point, the FBBs invite The Byrds onstage, but after realizing they are not quite ready, deliver one more number "Trying To Reach My Goal" Following this rarity, the four members of The Byrds join The Burritos onstage and the remainder of the night features all of these musicians performing together for the first time ever.
The jam session kicks off with Chuck Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven" directly into a soulful "You Don't Miss Your Water." McGuinn leads the way into the Gene Clark-penned Byrds gem, "I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better." A wonderfully engaged reading of Gram Parsons' song, "Hickory Wind," follows directly into a revved up reading of "So You Want To Be A Rock & Roll Star," with McGuinn and Hillman sharing lead vocals on their best-known songwriting collaboration. With Parsons, Battin, Leadon and Roberts all contributing the "la la la" backing vocals plus hoots and hollers, this is a wild performance. Next, they change the mood again, taking a more somber turn with "The Bells Of Rhymney." Much like "Break My Mind" played earlier in the set, these musicians continue with another popular song among L.A.'s country-rockers, a cover of Red Simpson's "Close Up The Honky Tonks." Here McGuinn takes lead vocals. Another delightful surprise surfaces next as Chris Hillman leads the way on "Time Between."
A string of classic Byrds hits follows, with McGuinn leading the way through "Mr. Spaceman" and a medley of "Turn, Turn, Turn" and "Mr. Tambourine Man." However, it is the 15-minute jam on "Eight Miles High" that follows. McGuinn can be heard exclaiming to the audience "And it's not a drug song either!" Needless to say, the Whisky A Go-Go audience has no intention of letting them end here.
For the encore, two more choice numbers, beginning with Carole King/Gerry Goffin tune, "I Wasn't Born To Follow." Following an all too brief instrumental sequence, this segues into Dylan's "Chimes Of Freedom." Once again, it's a delight to hear McGuinn and Hillman singing these songs together. Despite the tight curfew, the Whisky audience doesn't want the night to end and encourages another encore. At a loss for what to play, McGuinn relays to the other musicians, "We gotta do something hot!" A request from the audience for "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" gets their attention and despite it not being what anyone would consider a "hot" song, they give it a go. With McGuinn on lead vocal and Hillman, Roberts, Battin, Parsons and White all contributing on the choruses, this rises to the occasion. Following a sweet last refrain featuring White adding some striking guitar embellishments, they soar off into The Byrds' signature set-closing instrumental, "Hold It." Despite its brevity, "Hold It" provides one last chance for White, Leadon and Sneaky Pete to blaze away, indeed providing a smoking hot conclusion to this legendary night. (Alan Bershaw)

Following an all too brief instrumental sequence, this segues into Dylan's "Chimes Of Freedom." Once again, it's a delight to hear McGuinn and Hillman singing these songs together.

Roger Mcguinn Interview on Jools Holland 1997

James Roger McGuinn (known professionally as Roger McGuinn, previously as Jim McGuinn, and born James Joseph McGuinn III on July 13, 1942)[1] is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. He is best known for being the lead singer and lead guitarist on many of The Byrds' records. He is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for his work with The Byrds.
McGuinn was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. His parents, James and Dorothy, were involved in journalism and public relations, and during his childhood, they had written a bestseller titled Parents Can't Win. He attended The Latin School of Chicago. He became interested in music after hearing Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel", and asked his parents to buy him a guitar. (During the early 1980s, he paid tribute to the song that encouraged him to play guitar by including "Heartbreak Hotel" in his autobiographical show). Around the same time, he was also influenced by country artists and/or groups such as Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, and The Everly Brothers.
In 1957, he enrolled as a student at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music,[2] where he learned the five-string banjo and continued to improve his guitar skills. After graduation, McGuinn performed solo at various coffeehouses on the folk music circuit where he was hired as a sideman by folk music groups in the same vein as the Limeliters, the Chad Mitchell Trio, and Judy Collins. He also played guitar and sang backup harmonies for Bobby Darin. Soon after, he relocated to the West Coast, eventually Los Angeles, where he eventually met the future members of The Byrds.[2]
In 1962, after he ended his association with the Chad Mitchell Trio, McGuinn was hired by Darin to be a backup guitarist and harmony singer. (At that approximate time, Darin wanted to add some folk roots to his repertoire because it was a burgeoning musical field.) Unfortunately, about a year and a half after McGuinn began to play guitar and sing with Darin, Darin became ill and retired from singing. Subsequently, Darin opened T.M. Music in New York City's Brill Building, hiring McGuinn as a song writer for $35 a week. During 1963, just one year before he co-founded The Byrds, he was a studio musician in New York City, recording with Judy Collins and Simon & Garfunkel. At the same time, he was hearing of The Beatles (whose first American tour would commence in February 1964), and wondering how Beatlemania might affect folk music. By the time Doug Weston gave McGuinn a job in Southern California, at the The Troubadour (Los Angeles), McGuinn had included Beatles' songs in his act. He gave rock style treatments to traditional folk tunes and thereby caught the attention of another folkie Beatle fan, Gene Clark, who joined forces with McGuinn in July 1964. Together they formed the beginning of what was to become The Byrds.
After the break-up of The Byrds, McGuinn released several solo albums throughout the 1970s. He toured with Bob Dylan in 1975 and 1976 as part of Dylan's "Rolling Thunder Revue". In late 1975, he played guitar on the track titled "Ride The Water" on Bo Diddley's The 20th Anniversary of Rock 'n' Roll all-star album.
In 1978, McGuinn joined fellow ex-Byrds Gene Clark and Chris Hillman to form "McGuinn, Clark and Hillman", and the three together recorded an album with Capitol Records in 1979. The media loved the band and they performed on many TV rock shows, including repeated performances on The Midnight Special, where they played both new material and Byrds hits. "Don't You Write Her Off" reached #33 in April 1979. While some believe that the slick production and disco rhythms didn't flatter the group, and the album had mixed critically and commercial response, it sold enough to generate a follow up. McGuinn, Clark and Hillman's second release was to have been a full group effort entitled "City", but a combination of Clark's unreliability and his dissatisfaction with their musical direction (mostly regarding Ron and Howard Albert's production) resulted in the billing change on their next LP "City" to "Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman, featuring Gene Clark". By 1981 Clark had left and the group continued briefly as "McGuinn/Hillman".[citation needed]
In 1987 Roger McGuinn was the opening act for Dylan and Tom Petty. In 1991 he released his comeback solo album, Back from Rio to successful acclaim. It included the hit single "King of the Hill," written by and featuring Petty.
McGuinn currently tours as a solo artist.

The Beatles from beginning to end. The Beatles gave this L.A. 1966 press conference pr at the Capitol Records Tower, Los Angeles on August 24th, 1966.
The press asks Lennon mundane questions about his recent "Bigger than Jesus" remarks. A condescending reporter takes a shot at Ringo while the cameraman can't tell Ringo from John.
They take it in stride, with intelligence, honesty and humor from all four.
Later presented with steak branding irons (huh?) and gold records from RIAA for Revolver. Closeups show Brian Epstein lecturing John and Ringo. Later Interviewed by a Dick Clark stand-in, George is in a whimsical mood, and Paul goofs with the guy.
David Crosby, who at the time was a member of The Byrds, can occasionally be spotted in the film.
Following this interview the Beatles returned to the tour with a performance at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Two days later the group would close out their 1966 tour with their historic finale at Candlestick Park in San Fransisco - their last-ever concert.
In the coming years, while there would be no more touring, the Beatles would focus on creativity in the recording studio, producing some of the finest albums of their catalogue.

David Van Cortlandt Crosby (born August 14, 1941) is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. In addition to his solo career, he was a founding member of three bands: The Byrds; Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN, who are sometimes joined by Neil Young as Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young [CSNY]); and CPR.
Crosby has been depicted as emblematic of the counterculture.
Crosby has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: once for his work in The Byrds and once for his work with CSN.
Crosby joined Jim McGuinn (who later changed his name to Roger) and Gene Clark, who were then named the Jet Set. They were augmented by drummer Michael Clarke, at which point Crosby attempted, unsuccessfully, to play bass. Late in 1964, Chris Hillman joined as bassist, and Crosby relieved Gene Clark of rhythm guitar duties. Through connections that Jim Dickson (The Byrds' manager) had with Bob Dylan's publisher, the band obtained a demo acetate disc of Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" and recorded a cover version of the song, featuring McGuinn's 12-string guitar as well as McGuinn, Crosby, and Clark's vocal harmonizing.[7] The song turned into a massive hit, soaring to number one in the charts in the United States and the United Kingdom during 1965.[7] While Roger McGuinn originated The Byrds' trademark 12-string guitar sound, Crosby was responsible for the soaring harmonies and often unusual phrasing on their songs.
In 1966 Gene Clark, who then was the band's primary songwriter, left the group due to stress. This placed all the group's songwriting responsibilities in the hands of McGuinn, Crosby, and Hillman.[8] Crosby took the opportunity to hone his craft and soon became a prolific songwriter. His early Byrds efforts included the 1966 hit "Eight Miles High" (to which he contributed one line, while Clark and McGuinn wrote the rest), and its flip side "Why," co-written with McGuinn.
Crosby is widely credited with popularizing the song "Hey Joe." Since he felt responsible for having popularized the song, Crosby persuaded the other members of The Byrds to cover it on Fifth Dimension. By Younger Than Yesterday, The Byrds' album of 1967, Crosby clearly began to find his trademark style.
Friction between Crosby and the other Byrds came to a head in mid-1967. Tensions were high after the Monterey Pop Festival in June, when Crosby's onstage political diatribes between songs elicited rancor from McGuinn and Hillman. The next night he further annoyed his bandmates when, at the invitation of Stephen Stills, he substituted for an absent Neil Young during Buffalo Springfield's set. The internal conflict boiled over during recording of The Notorious Byrd Brothers album in August and September. Differences over song selections led to arguments, with Crosby being particularly adamant that the band should record only original material. McGuinn and Hillman dismissed Crosby in mid-September after he refused to participate in the recording session of the Goffin and King song "Goin' Back." Crosby's controversial menage-a-trois ode "Triad," recorded by the band before his dismissal, was left off the album. Jefferson Airplane recorded the song and released it on their album Crown of Creation in 1968. David Crosby sang a solo acoustic version on Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young's 1971 double live album Four Way Street. The Byrds' version appeared decades later on the 1988 Never Before release and is now available on the CD re-release of The Notorious Byrd Brothers.
In 1973 Crosby reunited with the original Byrds for the album Byrds, with Crosby acting as the album's producer. The album charted well (at number 20, their best album showing since their second album) but was generally not perceived to be a critical success. It marked the final artistic collaboration of the original band.
Around the time of Crosby's departure from the Byrds, he met a recently unemployed Stephen Stills at a party at the home of Cass Elliot (of The Mamas and the Papas) in California in March 1968, and the two started meeting informally together and jamming. They were soon joined by Graham Nash, who would leave his commercially successful group The Hollies to play with Crosby and Stills. Their appearance at the Woodstock Music and Art Fair in August 1969 constituted their second live performance ever.
Their first album, Crosby, Stills & Nash of 1969, was an immediate hit, spawning two Top 40 hit singles and receiving key airplay on the new FM radio format, in its early days populated by unfettered disc jockeys who then had the option of playing entire albums at once.
The songs he wrote while with CSN include “Guinnevere,” “Almost Cut My Hair,” “Long Time Gone,” and “Delta.” He also co-wrote “Wooden Ships” with Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane and Stephen Stills.
