Plot: In November of 1833, the state of Missouri turned a blind eye as hundreds of its peaceful inhabitants were hunted down and driven from their homes in the dead of night. Against this impending strife, a young man with a divine vision leads a people against the aggression of an anti-hero with a vulnerable past. With more than two million copies sold, the second volume of Gerald N. Lund's epic series The Work and the Glory now brings a pivotal moment in American history to the big screen. "The Work and The Glory: American Zion" sets the story of the fictional Steed family against the historically factual backdrop of the Mormon people's move into the West. Divided by their diverse reactions to a nascent ideology, the Steeds struggle to hold together as the strength of their convictions and their filial bonds are tested. The stirring narrative of the faith that led a persecuted people to Missouri and beyond is one of the most poignant untold tales of American history. It is the account of a valiant struggle to exercise the rights promised by a fledgling nation. "The Work and the Glory: American Zion" unearths the story of the passion behind the movement which eventually launched the largest American migration and the colonization of the West: the vision of a promised land in America.

The September 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre, in which a party of 120 emigrants, suspected of hostility toward the church, was murdered in southeastern Utah by Paiute Indians and a band of Mormons led by John D. Lee, who claimed to be acting on orders from Young himself. Despite this atrocity, by 1858 Brigham Young had reached a reconciliation with the federal government, which issued a pardon for alleged Mormon offenses and for a time at least allowed the Saints to practice their religion and build their community without interference. In 1871, Brigham Young was himself tried under an 1862 law that prohibited polygamy in United States territories, but though he had by this time married more than twenty wives, he was not convicted.

Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use.
My second tribute to this movie team, using video clips from their four films together. Both were strikingly attractive and appealing, and they were both extremely likeable, making their onscreen pairings extremely successful. Linda had idolized Tyrone as a young girl in Texas and was undoubtedly thrilled to have the opportunity to work with him. They both died tragically young, making their work together and individually all the more poignant.

http://www.freebyu.org/
When you think of Brigham Young University in Utah, you probably know it's the school a lot of Mormons go to. You may not know that a lot of non-Mormons also go there for a number of reasons.
Everyone, though, has to abide by the school's Honor Code. That means no alcohol, no coffee, no drugs, no pre-marital sex, and definitely no being gay. Even if you're not Mormon, you have to agree to these things if you go there.
And BYU, as a private religious school, has a right to do that.
There are a couple of important differences, though, between how Mormons and non-Mormons are treated by the school.
If you're not Mormon, you have to pay double the tuition. It's like going to an out-of-state school. And, again, that's fine. They can do that.
But here's the more interesting difference: Suppose you're not Mormon and you go to BYU and you start having second thoughts about your beliefs. Suppose you're an evangelical Christian and you become an atheist. That's fine. No one cares.
If you're an atheist -- who for some reason attends BYU -- and you become an evangelical Christian, okay.
But if you're a Mormon at BYU and you realize you don't believe that stuff anymore, the punishment is extremely harsh.
Forget getting kicked out of the Church. That's a given.
BYU will expel you. They could also evict you from BYU housing. If you're employed by the school, they could fire you.
And if you wanted to transfer to another school, they could put a hold on your transcript. Even if they released it, they could put notation on it that says you were not in compliance with their Honor Code. Without more details, that almost sounds like you cheated or something, even though you did nothing wrong!
Basically, they will ruin your life if you're a Mormon who stops Mormoning.
Now maybe you're thinking there's an easy solution to this problem: If you're a Mormon who stops believing, that's fine. You just have to pay the higher tuition and be treated like all the other non-Mormon students!
That would make sense! But that's not what BYU does. They single out Mormons who change their minds and punish them more severely.
It's easier to be an atheist who goes to BYU... than a Mormon who becomes an atheist at BYU.
Think about this for a second. They're basically telling Mormon students: Don't become critical thinkers. Don't put your religion under scrutiny. Don't you dare change your mind. Because if you do, we are coming after you.
What choice do you really have at that point, other than to lie?
If you're a Mormon student there, and your parents are paying for college, you're kind of forced into the faith because the consequences for leaving are so horrible.
I would add that if you talk to BYU students, they'll tell you it's not just a religious school. It's a community. So leaving the school means losing your friends and breaking ties with your networks there.
It's hard enough to leave the Mormon faith you were raised with. Why are they making it even harder on these students by making them leave their school?
Shouldn't college be a place where that sort of thinking is encouraged? Why should students have to fear questioning their faith?
There's a group of parents, alumni, and anonymous students and faculty that are actually trying to change this. They're called FreeBYU and they're asking the school to update its Honor Code so that if Mormons decide not to stay in the Church while they're in school, they won't get kicked out of their housing, they won't be expelled, and they won't lose their jobs.
FreeBYU says that Mormons who leave the faith should just have to pay the higher tuition. It's a pretty reasonable demand.
But so far, the school hasn't budged.
FreeBYU has also recently taken another major step. BYU is an accredited school. It meets certain high standards that makes it a legit university. Your degree actually counts for something.

Are you tired of my classic film couples tributes yet? ;)
I wanted to try something different for this video, so I used a lot of films that I've never worked with before. Some of them I watched ages ago, others I saw only last week. I had to leave out a few of my personal favorites like "The Philadelphia Story" and "Now, Voyager" to make room for the new ones, but that's okay. I hope you like it. :)

"Journey to Temple Hill: The Brigham Young University Story" is a historical documentary about BYU's founding and early history. The program was produced by BYU University Communications in conjunction with the L. Tom Perry Special Collections at the Harold B. Lee Library.
The documentary draws upon interviews with past and current BYU presidents, historians, faculty and with descendants of BYU founders to describe the university's establishment and the challenges faced in its first three decades.
Established in 1875, the university began as the Brigham Young Academy, housed in a single building on Provo Center Street. After a fire destroyed the building in 1884, the academy founders and faculty struggled to keep the institution alive, often going without salaries for months at a time.
In 2012, BYU marked the 100th anniversary of construction of the Karl G. Maeser Building, the first building on upper BYU campus on a piece of land known as "Temple Hill."
The documentary includes rare historical footage, photos and interviews with past BYU presidents Elder Dallin H. Oaks and Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Elder Merrill J. Bateman, emeritus general authority of the Church of Jesus Christ, as well as current BYU President Cecil O. Samuelson, also an emeritus general authority, are also featured.
Actor and theatre professor Rodger Sorensen, associate dean of the BYU College of Fine Arts and Communications, portrays Karl G. Maeser, BYU's spiritual and academic architect. The contributions of Abraham O. Smoot, first president of BYU's Board of Trustees, who sacrificed his own personal wealth to sustain the institution, are also highlighted.
The program includes original recordings of early academy students Eva Maeser Crandall, daughter of Karl G. Maeser, and Bryant Hinckley, one of Maeser's students and father of the late President Gordon B. Hinckley.
Karl Miller, who is seen in photos from the 1908 Maeser Building groundbreaking, also shares his unprecedented personal perspective in an interview that was recorded before his death in 2008. The 104 year-old Miller, who attended Brigham Young High and BYU and then worked on campus for his entire professional career, describes the groundbreaking on an area known as "Temple Hill," where the Maeser Building was constructed.
"It was a glorious day for all of us to see something in the future," recounts Miller. "We had no idea it would ever be a university like it is today."
Production support for"Journey to Temple Hill" was provided through the LDS Motion Picture Studio. It was produced and directed by Julie Walker with director of photography Brian Wilcox. The project was edited by BYU students Sarah Butler, Mark Gillins and Seth Estrada. Sam Cardon provided
the original musical score.
"Journey to Temple Hill," is an expanded version of a documentary shown in the Gordon B. Hinckley Building Alumni and Visitors Center,
Brigham Young University is one of the world's largest private church-owned universities. For more information about BYU, see byu.edu.

Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use.
A tribute to the gorgeous actress with dark beauty, Linda Darnell (1923-1965), who played innocent virginal heriones in her early career and then sultry, sophisticated and sometimes seductive femme fatales in her later films. Born Monetta Darnell in Texas, Linda was the child of a stage mother who pushed her into beauty pagents before she was even a teenager. Signed by 20th Century Fox at the age of 14, she began with a featured role in "Elsa Maxwell's Hotel For Women" in 1939 and soon found herself cast opposite such actors as John Payne in "Stardust" (1940) in a role that was specifically written for Linda based on her own rise to fame, and Tyrone Power in "Daytime Wife" (1939), "Brigham Young" and "The Mark Of Zorro" (both 1940) and "Blood And Sand" (1941). Her roles became more complex in the mid-40s, with such siren-like roles in "Summer Storm" (1945), "Hangover Square", "My Darling Clementine" and "Fallen Angel" (all 1946), and later as a 17th-century British courtesan in "Forever Amber' (1947). Her career began to falter later in the decade, although "A Letter To Three Wives" (1949) and "No Way Out" (1950) are often considered her best performances. Three failed marriages, a long-running but unfufilled affair with writer-producer-director Joesph L. Mankiewicz, a drinking problem as well as family tension took their toll on the actress and she attemted suicide in the 50s. Darnell turned to stage and nightclub work to pay the bills after her film career came to a halt.. The actress had just made a comeback in the low budget western "Black Spurs" (1965) when she tragically expired after injuries she sustained in a housefire while visting friends in Illinois. Linda was plagued by a phobia of fire all her life, which came tragically true. Eerie too, how in many of her films her characters were within close proximity of flames or when a fire was part of plots, such as "Anna And The King Of Siam" (1946). Her adopted daughter Lola called Linda "One of most courageous people I've ever known." Linda had gone back into the burning house mistakenly believing that her friend's teenage daughter was still trapped inside, despite her paralyzing fear of fire. Darnell is not as well-remembered as some of her contemporaries but to me she certainly was on par with them in talent and her beauty was breathtaking. Fellow Fox contract player Gene Tierney (certainly no Plain Jane herself) described Linda as having "the face of a Sistine Madonna". I used Tony Bennett's "Because Of You" in this tribute. Enjoy!

In this discussion, OW leaders and supporters will talk about women's church history, including how women were allowed to and often blessed and anointed other members by laying on of hands. These practices were encouraged by Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, but the ability to do so was taken away in the 1940's. This video is dedicated to Linda Darnell. Linda is one of my favorite actresses & I just think she is one of the greatest actresses ever!! My favorite movies of hers are " A Letter to Three Wives" & "Brigham Young." I just love her attitude & moxie!! She could be tough & yet still be vulnerable. Sadly she died when she was very young in a house fire. Thankfully she left behind a legacy of great movies.
Here is a mini biography of her life:
Linda Darnell, was born Monetta Eloyse Darnell, in Dallas, Texas on October 16, 1923. She was one of five children of a post office worker and his wife. A Texas-born beauty, her mother encouraged her to model. Her mother already knew that Linda was special because of her rare good looks. By 1934 she was modeling clothes for an area department store. Sometimes officials would think that she was 15 or 16 because she really didn't look her age. Neither Linda nor her mother discouraged their thinking. By the time Linda was 13, she was appearing with local theater companies and her talent was already becoming apparent. There was no doubt that Linda had a rare gift for someone so young.
When the Hollywood moguls sent scouts to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, her mother thought it would be a good idea to give Linda a shot at a try-out. The talent scouts took one look at her and her acting abilities and arranged for a screen test. She made the trek to Hollywood and when her true age was discovered she was sent home. After two years and more local theater appearances, Linda returned to California and her career was off and running. Her debut was in 1939 in the role of Marcia Bromley in Hotel for Women (1939). She was all of 16 at the time and became the youngest leading lady in Hollywood history. Her next film was that same year in Day-Time Wife (1939). Her third film was as Carolyn Sayres in Star Dust (1940) made in 1940 and Linda immediately rose to heights of stardom.
Other quality films followed. In 1941 she appeared in Blood and Sand (1941) and Rise and Shine (1941). In 1945 she played Netta Longdon in the film Hangover Square (1945). The movie proved to be a box-office bonanza. The following year Linda appeared with the legendary Lillian Gish in Centennial Summer (1946). Later that same year she co-starred with Henry Fonda and Victor Mature in My Darling Clementine (1946). It was another hit. Linda reached the height of her career when she played opposite Cornel Wilde in 1947's Forever Amber (1947) where she survives the famed London fire. In 1952 she starred in Blackbeard, the Pirate (1952) along with Irene Ryan, Robert Newton, and William Bendix.
Linda's final appearance on the silver screen was in 1965's Black Spurs (1965). She was married and divorced three times. They were: J. Peverell Marley from 1944-1952, Phillip Liebmann (a New York brewer) from 1954-1955 and finally Merle Roy Robertson (an airline pilot) from 1957-1962. On April 10, 1965, Linda died of burns she suffered in the house fire of her former secretary. Ironically, she had been watching Star Dust (1940) on television, which was one of the films that set her career in motion. She had filmed a total of 46 movies. Often described as the "girl with the perfect face", Linda died at the age of 41.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3Zsvml57PE is a video describing how to learn more about the Mormon Church.
"'Mormonism' has made me all I am; and the grace, the power, and the wisdom of God will make me all that I ever will be, either in time or in eternity." -Brigham Young
Brigham Young was born June 1, 1801, in Whitingham, Vermont. In 1835, three years after he joined the Mormon Church, Brigham Young was called to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. As successor to Joseph Smith, Brigham Young led the migration west in 1846-47 to the Rocky Mountains and founded Salt Lake City. He was sustained as President of the Church on December 27, 1847. As Church President and Territorial Governor of Utah, Brigham Young established Latter-day Saint settlements in Utah and throughout the American West. Under his direction, construction commenced on the Salt Lake, St. George, and Logan temples. He brought the telegraph and the railroad to Utah and encouraged cooperative industry among Latter-day Saints, and Brigham Young encouraged excellence and refinement in every aspect of life. Brigham Young died August 29, 1877 in Salt Lake City after nearly 30 years as Church President.

Trekking up 800 stone steps every morning to a working archaeological site/classroom, BYU students are part of a team that is trying to learn more about this ancient monument and how to preserve it. Working in the shadow of one of Jordan's treasured monuments and living among their Jordanian and Bedoiun Bedul colleagues is life-changing, says crew chief Allison Lee. "It changes how you see the world and how you see yourself."
The Ad-Deir Monument and Plateau project is a joint effort between Brigham Young University, the Jordanian Department of Antiquities, and the Petra Archaeological Park. See a documentary about the project: "Journey to Petra: Preserving the Ad-Deir Monument"

In Jordan, archaeologists are looking to the past to see if ancient Nabatean technologies can help to preserve the Ad-Deir Monument, also known as The Monastery. A joint effort between Brigham Young University, the Jordanian Department of Antiquities and the Petra Archaeological Park, the Ad-Deir Monument Project is a classical study of the plateau, as well as a conservation effort. The Ad-Deir monument, the largest facade in Petra, is deteriorating from wind and water erosion. By studying the original Nabatean water control systems here, the team hopes to control erosion that is impacting the structure, and to provide resources to benefit the local population "The Nabateans of 2000 years ago created a water engineering system as a gift that can be maximized for Jordan today,” says BYU anthropology professor Cynthia Finlayson, project director.

That Brigham Young struggled with and eventually succumbed to racial insensitivities is an undisputed matter of the historical record. From the perspective of not a few nineteenth-century Americans, not to mention most anyone born in the last 50 years, Brigham Young peddled in racial rhetoric and promoted policies that bode poorly not only with our sensibilities but also with the spirit of the Book of Mormon: “All are alike unto God, both black and white, bond and free,” a vision established for the Saints in 1830, not 1978.
I view the races of mankind as fundamentally equal in privilege and love before God. Embracing the gospel as I do, I cannot believe otherwise. Few things bring me as much pain as reading that a man whom I want to revere could say things so far below his calling. So how can such a man be worthy of my respect, let alone my sustaining vote?
Were the Saints merely a product of their time? Perhaps. But so was Rees E. Price, a Mormon convert in Cincinnati in 1842 who had committed much of his time and resources to the absolute destruction of the slave system in America. Though he left the faith shortly after his baptism, he never left behind his principles that slavery was a blight so evil that he could not find words strong enough to condemn it. However much a radical he was, the Latter-day Saint message resonated with him and his anti-slavery principles. For Price, Mormonism need not be moderate on matters of race, however much Missouri had frightened Church leaders.
As I place the finishing touches on my forthcoming book, For the Cause of Righteousness, I have had occasion to reflect on how I view the man most closely associated with the priesthood restriction: Brigham Young. A man who succumbed to a weakness that the Saints are only beginning to overcome. Unlike Price, Young endorsed slavery, albeit with reservations. While politics likely played a role in Young’s support for it, he would have found himself in good company had he chosen to oppose it outright. How could Mormonism not only produce men with such differing ideologies but with one as its prophet and another as its apostate? Even by standards known and accessible in mid-nineteenth-century America, it is hard to explain away racial rhetoric when anti-slavery activists such as Price, William Lloyd Garrison, and Angelina Grimke were successfully meeting a much higher standard–––and paying a heavy price for it.
The meaning of the word sustain can provide some answers. Drawing from an old French root, sostenir, the word originally meant “to hold up, bear, suffer” or “endure.” It is noteworthy that sustenance also derives from a French term referring to “support [and] aid.” Webster’s 1828 dictionary defines it as “to bear; to uphold; to support; as a foundation sustains the superstructure; pillars.”

UVU: Women's Volleyball vs BYU 2013

Despite taking the first set over the No. 25 BYU Cougars, Utah Valley fell in four sets in front of a near-capacity crowd of 1,985 fans at the PE Building in Orem on Tuesday night (26-24, 22-25, 8-25, 11-25).
"It was a tale of two stories. Everything we needed to do we did well in those first two sets. But BYU took us out of our rhythm and it became a mental challenge for us," UVU head coach Sam Atoa said. "We didn't pass the ball as well and we didn't serve the ball as well. We just didn't do the things we did well early on and they (BYU) really stepped it up. You've got to give them credit for being able to stick with it. They were the better team tonight."
The Wolverines (1-3) got off to a hot start in the early stages of the opening set as they erupted out to a quick 9-4 lead over the nationally ranked Cougars (2-2). Junior Kalani Norris led the spurt for UVU by pounding home four quick kills. BYU battled right back from there, however, as it managed to tie the score at 13-all. After a trio of ties, UVU pulled ahead once again at 18-15 but back came the Cougars as they took their first lead of the set at 21-20.
BYU pulled ahead late at 23-21, but Utah Valley rallied from there and scored five of the final six points to take its first set over the Cougars since the 2009 season. Norris led the Wolverine attack with 10 first-set kills and a solid .588 attack percentage. As a team, the Wolverines also outhit the Cougars .312 to .208 in the frame.
A 6-0 run by Brigham Young in the second set broke an 8-8 tie and gave the Cougars a 14-8 advantage. UVU cut the deficit in half, at 14-11, after consecutive kills from Norris, senior Katie Fritzler and freshman Macky Treanor.
BYU pulled out to a late seven-point lead (22-15) in the second set but the Wolverines answered with a 5-0 spurt to pull within two (22-20). The Cougars later held a set-point advantage at 24-20 but UVU wouldn't go away as consecutive kills from Fritzler and Norris kept the Wolverines in the game until a wild final rally went to the Cougars as they took the second set by three points.
Following the intermission break, the momentum stayed with BYU as it jumped out to a 16-3 lead in the third set. The Cougars didn't look back from there in the frame as they took the set by 17 points.
The Wolverines bounced back early on in the fourth set as they remained right with Brigham Young but a 5-0 run by the Cougars helped the visitors take a 13-7 lead. BYU put the match away later in the set by scoring 11 of the final 13 points.
Norris led the Wolverines in the contest with 19 kills and nine digs. Treanor, who became UVU's first-ever WAC Player of the Week on Monday, added eight kills while Fritzler chipped in five kills and five blocks.
Tambre Haddock led the Cougars by posting a double-double of 18 kills and 14 digs. Alexa Gray and Kathryn LeCheminant too topped double figures in kills with 15 and 12 respectively.
