In Munich, where locals specialize in good living, we visit boisterous markets and go-for-Baroque palaces, while office workers surf in the Isar River. Heading into the foothills of the Alps, we tour the fairy-tale castles of "Mad" King Ludwig, and climb to the highest point in Germany atop the Zugspitze. Then we cross into Tirol to conquer a desolate ruined castle.

Rathaus (city hall) at Marienplatz
City gate at Karlsplatz, one entrance to the main shopping district of Munich
Englischer Garten: A big park with small rivers and ponds. An ideal place to take a walk with your dog or do sports. During summer, you can also enjoy a hearty meal of grilled chicken or pork knuckle outdoors at the Chinesischer Turm. Many will also come here to lie under the sun.
The street where you find all the branded and expensive fashion goods is called Maximilianstraße. Louis Vuitton, Versace, Dior are all located here.
If you feel like having a classic European brunch, go to the Vorstadt Café. As it is located very close the the university, you will find many young and fashionable people eating here. The price is very fair. It is open every day from 8 AM to 1AM into the night.
Alter Peter is the premiere destination in Munich to see the city from the top. There is a small entrance at a corner of the church from where you can start your journey higher. Entrance fee is 1.50 EUR. Make sure that you have enough stamina to climb the 306 stairs up (and back down again).
Viktualienmarkt is the best place to get fresh vegetables, fruits, cheese, or wines directly from the farmers and immediate retailers.
Lou Lan Cha is a new bubble tea boutique specially tailored for the Taiwanese. Besides drinks, you will find lots of original and self-made snacks that you would otherwise only find in Taiwan. They have a variety of new things coming each time, so stay updated on their Facebook page.
Once you feel like enjoying a traditionally Bavarian dish, come to the very crowded Hofbräuhaus for a Sauerbraten or Schweinshaxe. Located nearby the Marienplatz, it is easy to find. Here you can find the menu which Germany's cuisine is famous for.
The Glockenspiel Café has various cakes and drinks. Grab a seat near the window to enjoy the unique view on the Rathaus while sipping your warm cappuccino on a cold and snowy evening.

Munich (
/ˈmjuːnɪk/; (German: München, pronounced [ˈmʏnçən] (
listen), Bavarian: Minga) is the capital and the largest city of the German state of Bavaria. It is located on the River Isar north of the Bavarian Alps. Munich is the third largest city in Germany, behind Berlin and Hamburg. About 1.42 million people live within the city limits. Munich hosted the 1972 Summer Olympics.
The city's motto is "München mag Dich" (Munich likes you). Before 2006, it was "Weltstadt mit Herz" (Cosmopolitan city with a heart). Its native name, München, is derived from the Old High German Munichen, meaning "by the monks' place". The city's name derives from the monks of the Benedictine order who founded the city; hence the monk depicted on the city's coat of arms. Black and gold—the colours of the Holy Roman Empire—have been the city's official colours since the time of Ludwig the Bavarian.
Modern Munich is a financial and publishing hub, and a frequently top-ranked destination for migration and expatriate location in livability rankings. Munich achieved 4th place in frequently quoted Mercer livability rankings in 2011. For economic and social innovation, the city was ranked 15th globally out of 289 cities in 2010, and 5th in Germany by the 2thinknow Innovation Cities Index based on analysis of 162 indicators. In 2010, Monocle ranked Munich as the world's most livable city.

Englischer Garten: A big park with small rivers and ponds. An ideal place to take a walk with your dog or do sports. During summer, you can also enjoy a hearty meal of grilled chicken or pork knuckle outdoors at the Chinesischer Turm. Many will also come here to lie under the sun.
The street where you find all the branded and expensive fashion goods is called Maximilianstraße. Louis Vuitton, Versace, Dior are all located here.
If you feel like having a classic European brunch, go to the Vorstadt Café. As it is located very close the the university, you will find many young and fashionable people eating here. The price is very fair. It is open every day from 8 AM to 1AM into the night.
Alter Peter is the premiere destination in Munich to see the city from the top. There is a small entrance at a corner of the church from where you can start your journey higher. Entrance fee is 1.50 EUR. Make sure that you have enough stamina to climb the 306 stairs up (and back down again).
Viktualienmarkt is the best place to get fresh vegetables, fruits, cheese, or wines directly from the farmers and immediate retailers.
Lou Lan Cha is a new bubble tea boutique specially tailored for the Taiwanese. Besides drinks, you will find lots of original and self-made snacks that you would otherwise only find in Taiwan. They have a variety of new things coming each time, so stay updated on their Facebook page.
Once you feel like enjoying a traditionally Bavarian dish, come to the very crowded Hofbräuhaus for a Sauerbraten or Schweinshaxe. Located nearby the Marienplatz, it is easy to find. Here you can find the menu which Germany's cuisine is famous for.
The Glockenspiel Café has various cakes and drinks. Grab a seat near the window to enjoy the unique view on the Rathaus while sipping your warm cappuccino on a cold and snowy evening.

Múnich. Una de las ciudades más ricas del mundo, de notable belleza arquitectónica y natural y gran importancia histórica, a la que cada año llegan más de siete millones de turistas.
Nuestra primera madrileña, Ruth de Boadilla del Monte, lleva ya cinco años en Alemania y aquí ha montado su propia empresa de turismo. Acompañada por su novio Juan, nos lleva a la Max-Joseph-Platz, en cuyo centro encontramos la estatua en honor a Maximiliano José I, el rey baviero que da nombre a la plaza. En ella se ubica también el palacio conocido como “La Residencia” (Residenz München); construido por la dinastía de los Wittelsbach que, con sus veintitrés mil metros cuadrados, es el palacio urbano más grande de Europa.
Recorriendo la ciudad llegamos al Altes Rathaus, el viejo Ayuntamiento de Múnich, que fue testigo del discurso de Joseph Goebbels que dio comienzo a la tristemente célebre “Noche de los cristales rotos”.
Nos trasladamos a 30 kilómetros de Múnich para visitar el primer campo de concentración nazi construido en Alemania, Dachau. Por él pasaron más de doscientas mil personas. Cambiamos de contexto y regresamos a Múnich para visitar la calle más cara de Alemania, Maximilianstrasse, Viscardigasse, donde Hitler dio el golpe de Estado en 1923, y Odeonsplatz, donde el dictador daba sus discursos y se hacían los desfiles militares en su honor.
A tan sólo una hora de Múnich, llegamos a los Alpes bávaros para visitar Füssen. En lo alto de una colina encontramos el famoso Castillo de Neuschwanstein, el castillo de Luis II de Baviera (“el rey loco”), en el que se inspiró Walt Disney para diseñar el castillo de la “Bella durmiente”. D
Allí dejamos a Ruth y Juan y regresamos a Múnich para conocer a Paloma, de Castellana. La encontramos nadando en el río del Englischer Garten. Múnich es considerada la cuna del surf en las ciudades, y Paloma nos lleva a visitar la famosa “ola de Múnich. Recorriendo el jardín inglés, el más grande del mundo dentro de una ciudad, encontramos la Chinesischer Turm, la pagoda china que se ha convertido en el “Beer Garten” más famoso de Múnich. A unas dos horas de Múnich visitamos el lago Chiemsee, situado en una cuenca glaciar y regresamos a Múnich para acercarnos a la Olympiaturm, una torre de comunicaciones de 291 metros de altura que se ubica en el Olympiapark, la villa olímpica construida para los Juegos Olímpicos de 1972, tristemente conocida porque en ella tuvo lugar la conocida como “matanza de Múnich”.
Nieves, una madrileña del Paseo de Extremadura, es la propietaria de una empresa de limpieza llamada García Gebäudemanagement. Con ella visitamos el Viktualien Markt, el mercado de alimentación situado en el centro de la ciudad. Vemos la casa donde vivía Hitler con Eva Braun y llegamos a Marienplatz. En el centro de la plaza se encuentra la estatua en honor a la Virgen María, de la que recibe su nombre. La plaza está presidida por el Neues Rathaus, el nuevo Ayuntamiento, cuya torre alberga el Glockenspie con sus 43 campanas y marionetas mecánicas. En ella se encuentra también la fuente del pez, el punto de encuentro de Múnich. Y dejamos a nuestra madrileña tras celebrar el cumpleaños de Magdalena, su encantadora madre.
Javier de Chamartín es trabajador social en un centro de menores con necesidades especiales. Javier nos enseña el Allianz Arena, el impresionante estadio del Bayern de Múnich, conocido como el “Schlauchboot” (bote hinchable). Por la Isartor entramos de nuevo en la ciudad para conocer el Hotel Bayerischer Hof, donde encontramos un mausoleo en recuerdo de Michael Jackson, que solía alojarse aquí. Visitamos la Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Múnich, con sus dos famosas torres y su no menos conocida “huella del diablo”. Visitamos la plaza de Karlsplatz – Stachus, conocida por algunos españoles gracias a las películas de Alfredo Landa; el Ministerio de Justicia y la fuente de la plaza del antiguo jardín botánico; disfrutamos de la “bebida nutritiva” de Múnich en Augustiner-Keller, una cervecería con una bodega situada a veinte metros bajo tierra; nos acercamos a la Ciudad Universitaria, donde se encuentra el “muro de las heridas del recuerdo”; y nos sorprendemos con los curiosos helados de Der verrückte eismacher. Finalizamos nuestro recorrido a 25 km de Múnich, paseando en barca por el lago Starnberg.

Por la Isartor entramos de nuevo en la ciudad para conocer el Hotel Bayerischer Hof, donde encontramos un mausoleo en recuerdo de Michael Jackson, que solía alojarse aquí. Visitamos la Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Múnich, con sus dos famosas torres y su no menos conocida “huella del diablo”. Visitamos la plaza de Karlsplatz – Stachus, conocida por algunos españoles gracias a las películas de Alfredo Landa; el Ministerio de Justicia y la fuente de la plaza del antiguo jardín botánico; disfrutamos de la “bebida nutritiva” de Múnich en Augustiner-Keller, una cervecería con una bodega situada a veinte metros bajo tierra; nos acercamos a la Ciudad Universitaria, donde se encuentra el “muro de las heridas del recuerdo”; y nos sorprendemos con los curiosos helados de Der verrückte eismacher. Finalizamos nuestro recorrido a 25 km de Múnich, paseando en barca por el lago Starnberg.
